The Fed is expected to make some sort of announcement this morning, and the chatter is that it will be big. QE3? Something else? I’m still a skeptic about QE3, but it’s obvious that Bernanke is feeling a lot of political heat -- and not just from the Obama Administration, but from world markets. The consensus opinion is that the Fed will engage in “Operation Twist” -- rolling their huge backlog of short-term securities into longer (10-year) bonds and thereby driving down yields there. The thinking is that this will in turn prompt investors to put their money elsewhere in a restless search for better yields. However, I am skeptical about this because the evidence so far is that investors are in a very “risk off” mood, and lowering yields on longer bonds the way they have on shorter ones (all the way down to zero) will simply have bad long-term effects with few (or any) short-term gains. Monetary policy is played out; only fiscal policy can turn things around now, but nothing is likely to happen on that front until after the 2012 elections. Which may be why Bernanke is getting a tad panicky: a whole year of sideways drift in the thrall of a double-dip recession and possible financial collapse in Europe stokes his deflationary nightmares.
Thomas Sowell weighs in on the "Social Security is a Ponzi scheme" thing.
The fundamental problem of Social Security is that the irresponsible way its finances are set up, and the changing demographics of the country, mean that there is simply not going to be enough money in its trust fund to pay today’s young people what they are legally entitled to when the time comes for them to retire. The money is just not there, some of it having been spent for unrelated purposes. Making up a growing shortfall — as baby boomers stop paying into the system as they retire and start drawing money out of the system — would mean ever-increasing burdens on taxpayers that taxpayers are unlikely to put up with.
Paul Ryan on SS: Yeah, itÂ’s a Ponzi scheme. Maybe not criminal, but a Ponzi scheme nonetheless. (SS is the third rail of politics? Not any more.)
What comes after Europe? IÂ’ve already gone into that: The Humongous.
What comes next is the explosion of the European project. Given what European leaders have made of that project over the past 30-odd years, it's not an altogether bad thing. But it will come at a massive cost. The riots of Athens will become those of Milan, Madrid and Marseilles. Parties of the fringe will gain greater sway. Border checkpoints will return. Currencies will be resurrected, then devalued. Countries will choose decay over reform. It's a long, likely parade of horribles.DOOM!
ObamaÂ’s ignorance about basic economics is very much of a piece with the rest of his Presidency, alas. Like many powerful men through the ages, he has fallen prey to the idea that he can simply wave his hand and cause the tides of history to shift.
Economics: one of those academic fields in which repeated failure is no bar to great success.
Obama cares about jobs. Union jobs. Others? Not so much.
CaliforniaÂ’s public pension battles will be fought in city halls all over the state.
Merck is the next company to contemplate layoffs in the 10K range. They employ a lot of people in Philadelphia, so that's going to put a hell of a hurt on the local economy.
Granholm: “Let my personal failure and ineptitude act as a beacon to all those who wish to piss away taxpayer money and flout the wishes of the electorate!” Detroit is a fitting symbol for that clueless git.
Class warfare and the rule of law.
[T]hose earning less than $250,000 still have to someday find a willing buyer for the assets they wish to sell, and those assets are going to be a lot less attractive to most individuals, funds and other institutional investors — a.k.a. the market — if they’re taxed at 30-odd percent instead of 15 percent.Exactly so. A sale of an asset requires both buyer and seller, and an accurate price mechanism to drive the trade. More:
The Democrats are declaring war on everybody’s investments here, not just Joe Millionaire’s. Look for major institutional investors, private-equity types, and even venture capitalists — a.k.a. the financial lifeblood of a modern economy — to start seeking friendlier tax environments abroad. Nobody has to have an office on Wall Street any more.
Your stimulus dollars, hard at work on vital issues facing our nation.
End the tyranny of the Keynesians!
The British “tea party” movement seems to be gaining ground. Not a moment too soon.
The IMF, always masters at stating the obvious too late to do anyone any good, warn about a global slowdown in growth.
I don’t know why so many observers keep acting shocked that Obama refuses to move to the political center. He is a leftist ideologue in blood and bone, not a chummy moral lout like Clinton was. He will speak soothing platitudes to the public when he must, but his vanity is as great as his ineptitude. He will never admit that he is wrong, or that he must share power. He truly believes that his is the Imperial Presidency; he is outraged that he can be hindered by his political opponents. It is obvious that he does not consider the Legislative branch to be his co-equal in power, but rather a group of lackeys to be ordered about like house-servants. It offends him to be disagreed with -- so sure is he of his essential correctness, of his righteousness, that he conflates political disagreement with treachery. He will “compromise” only when forced to do so, and then only grudgingly.

Let this come. I see this as in some ways positive for us. Especially the fringe parties gaining ground. My hope is that nationalism will enjoy a rebirth. If it does, we can go back to having a diversity of policies and opinions on the continent again. If all goes exceptionally well the new regimes will be nativist and anti-immigrant. Europe needs to be set back in order - the best thing that can be done is to purge the foreign. Eurosocialism wasn't such a problem when there was cultural solidarity. Now, with the "salad bowl" approach to national identity, all that was once good is being tossed out the window. Let's hope that Europe's hot-blooded genes are reactivated and given expression.

Amen. The vile harpy was on the radio recently saying "tax cuts don't work - we tried dozens of tax cuts and they failed." That is either a deliberate lie, or evidence of the worst kind of foolishness. I live in this forsaken state - I know full well that tax cuts have been in short supply, but hikes to taxes and fees have been abundant.
Sadly, the Dem machine will make sure she's well taken care of. Sickening.

Ah but Monty, Obama IS doing exactly what Clinton did. He is talking (rhetoric) like he is moving to the center but his actions are continuing to act as a hard core leftist.
This is the same thing Clinton did and of course the press called it "triangulating" and gave him credit for what the Republican congress did even though he fought them tooth and nail.

“Even a small 5 percent reduction in the regulatory budget (about $2.8 billion) would result in about $75 billion in expanded private-sector GDP each year, with an increase in employment by 1.2 million jobs annually.”
“On average,” the Phoenix Center says, “eliminating the job of a single regulator grows the American economy by $6.2 million and nearly 100 private sector jobs annually. Conversely, each million dollar increase in the regulatory budget costs the economy 420 private sector jobs.”

Also, he has no idea what he's doing, and this concept of just 'willing it to be so' is outragous and offensive to anyone who has ever worked a day in their life - which, of course, Obama has not.

She was grilling Ron Suskind on his new book that paints Obama as likable guy who's in way over his head.
Ann Curry, rump swab, pointed out three huge errors in Suskind's book and concluded the whole thing was worthless.
One mistake was calling reporter Erin Burnett Erin Burkett.
Another huge error was Suskind saying the DJIA lost 382 points in one particular day in February when in fact the DJIA lost only 378 points.

Adam Denison, a spokesman for the General Motors subsidiary, said OnStar does not currently sell customer data, but it reserves that right. He said both the new and old privacy policies allow OnStar to chronicle a vehicleÂ’s every movement and its speed, though itÂ’s not clear where thatÂ’s stated in the old policy.
“What’s changed [is that if] you want to cancel your OnStar service, we are going to maintain a two-way connection to your vehicle unless the customer says otherwise,” Denison said in a telephone interview.

We are not stopping it because of the feckless cocksucker in the White House. We are in Libya for the same reason.
But the step from Obama's catastrophic foreign policy to what reactionary supports is antithetical to everything we are as a country. We destroyed Hitler, but we did not destroy the German people. We destroyed Tojo, but did not destroy Japan.
As for helping Muslims? Fuck 'em. Let them wallow in their 7th century filth. And when they rear their expansionary heads; we should chop them off. That doesn't mean committing genocide; it means defending ourselves.

"The book, officially released today, does have its share of errors. Erin Burnett, then a journalist with CNBC and now with CNN, is identified as Erin Burkett; David Axelrod is identified as ObamaÂ’s 2008 campaign manager; that title actually belonged to David Plouffe.
In the book, Suskind says the unemployment rate in June of 2009 stood at 8.0%; it was actually 9.5%.

Best of luck to you! My advice: act as if you are interviewing them. The fact that they called you in for an interview means they already want you, so you need to be the one to ask the questions. Ask the interviewer if they like working there and judge the response. Ask about the job, and when you leave, let them know the job sounds great, etc., and that you'd love to have it.
I've approached every interview like this, and I've been employed for the last 19 years. Never had an interview where I wasn't offered the job.

I'm sorry, I thought the genocide in the Sudan had been going on longer than 3 years. Was I mistaken.
I'm not a fan of genocide (understatement), but I'm fine with "Get out or die" (as long as "get out" remains a true option). It may not be nice, but given their stated desire to kill us all, I'm not sure "nice" applies here.
We destroyed Hitler, but we did not destroy the German people.
I'm sure the people of Dresden would be happy to know that. From beyond the grave. We didn't destroy "the German people" or "the Japanese people" because they were rational and could, therefore, be reasoned with and would negotiate in good faith (if only once they'd been roundly defeated). The true tenets of the Muslim religion are antithetical to rationality and good-faith negotiation.
So, where as with the Germans, Italians, and Japanese the question was not "them or us" but "what do we need to do to make you behave?" the question with Muslims (or a great number of them, at least) really may be "them or us?" If that's the question, the answer is simple.

If you grind them down too much and need new 'sliver' amalgam alloys see MrObvious @ #65.
I don't do a lot of silverwork anymore but more importantly, if you're bruxing your teeth down, keep in mind that Gold is just comming off a top at $1900/oz. Over the last 30 years of practice 99% of my work in crown and bridge has been done with gold in the $350/oz range. IE: the materials are costing roughly 5 X for the lab work alone. In my city with 26% unemployment I've gotten a reputation for full mouth rehab on severe cases, but lately we're doing fillings and extractions because nobody can afford the crown and bridge.
Take care of what you got. Because until the economy gets better, replacing them isn't going to be cheap. Also, dentistry isn't covered in the Obamacare bill and propably never will be. When it comes to cost cutting, physicians routinely consider dentistry "optional" and one of the first items up for budget cuts.

I'll explain that to you: I have the potential to be a billionaire; thus I have a billion potential dollars. I simply trade some of my potential dollars for real dollars at the bank. The books stay balanced and everyone is happy - it solves the financial crisis since you are a potential billionaire also.
The physicists ought to back this economic scheme since they bit hook line and sinker on the idiotic idea of potential energy - hey it keeps the energy books balanced doesn't it? Do you expect economists to be smarter than physicists?
Potential energy came into being in the 19th century - physicists thought they had uncovered an important physical principal; that energy is a conserved quantity. Unfortunately it was pointed out that gravitational fields obviously didn't conserve energy. The physicists were about to correctly abandon their idea when an engineer came up with a way to preserve the delusion; potential energy. "You see it doesn't really exist, but we pretend that it does and then we can continue being deluded!" he explained - though not in those exact words of course; "We take this non existent nothing and say that it has the potential to become energy and voila" The physicists wanted to be right that they had discovered the key to the universe so ta da: potential energy came into being. The physicists evidently figured that not only does God make the same mathematical errors that they do, but that he is just as big a fool and just as gullible as they are.
So I will happily write any of you a check payable in potential dollars if you would be good enough to cash it for me. You can deposit those potential dollars in the bank, and your account will still have the same amount of money in it - only now it is split between real dollars and potential dollars. Everything is fine since I just demonstrated that potential dollars can be turned into real dollars.

Yeah, my point- really- is that the simple willingness to kill Muslims- not "because of who they are" but because Muslims as a society represent an existential threat- is the first step that is required in assuring the ascendency of the truly Moderate (and, yes, they do exist- they're just really, really rare) Muslims.
And one of the things Europe may have to do to show that willingness is start mass deportations of Muslims- which will lead to killing them, because they won't stand for it.
Understand that: however noble your intent, if you truly wish to save the West from the insidious cancer that is Islam, you're going to have to kill a metric butt load of Muslims. Many of those you wouldn't have to kill if you were willing to return to the old days of "swatting flies" as GW once said.

Then you and I agree completely. I support a robust defense of our society, and if that means deportation on a huge scale, then I am comfortable with the idea. And I am not a fool; with deportation comes violence. But the difference between me and reactionary is that he thinks we should model our efforts on the Nazi's methods. The phrase "final solution" is not unclear.
Your point that we must change the Muslim world's perception of our willingness to kill them is profound. This is exactly what the West needs to do. And if and when that point is driven home is the day that the flow of Muslims into the West will reverse.

You're overweighting the pictures from the last two days. Those are trend-buckers.
Usually they have Romney smiling like he just spotted the pun on a Powerpoint slide and thinks he's the only one who gets it, Perry making an uncharacteristically Bush-y face (Texas dumb!), and Palin looking like a crosseyed cheerleader mom who accidentally took an Adderall instead of a Midol.

lulz. Even ignoring the new definition of "sensible" as Einstein's definition of "insanity", debt reduction would require a surplus, which nothing Barky has napkin-sketched or bleated about comes even close to.

IMO we really won WWII AFTER that War, when we outlawed the Political/Religios systems of Naziism, and Shinto. We FORCED them to enshrine in their founding documents our ideals of Religious Freedom, and Personal Rights...
Note, in both Afganistan, and Iraq, in THEIR Consitutions are statements that they will adhere to Sharia law...
WWII? Patton et al (as military Governor of Germany) did it right... today??? we're blowing it.

To this day, the Swastika is outlawed in Germany...
Doing the same to the Crescent Moon symbol of Islam may be the only thing which can save Western Civilisation.
You cannot allow a Political/Religious Belief system to flourish, which says YOU are the enemy, and must be destroyed... you MUST acknowledge that words have meanings, and that people will DIE for their beliefs... and so you must change that belief system.
So when we spend blood and treasure to take over a country, and put in a Government, we MUST also use that power to put in a Republic form of Government, with US Freedoms enshrined in its founding documents... otherwise we are wasting the lives of our people... and going bankrupt while NOT solving the problem.
Posted by: Romeo13 at September 21, 2011 08:28 AM (NtXW4)
Obviously not, but I think it shows that a blanket statement about "Western Civilization" being unable or unwilling to save itself is incorrect.
There are institutions, including the Catholic church, that have stood the test of time and that are continuing to make inroads with people. Europeans (western Euros) and Americans may be lost right now, but some of the core values that the Church (and other churches) have espoused for centuries are being embraced by people in Africa. I remember during the last papal 'election' hearing a lot about conservative Catholics (bishops and cardinals) in Africa and how that seemed like it could be the future of the Church.
So I guess I just wouldn't give up hope. Things go in cycles and on the scale of civilizations, the past 30 or 40 years have been a tiny blip.

No, the difference is that loans have to be paid back, I'm simply trading potential money for real money. Its up to the bank to convert those potential dollars into real dollars if they want to. The bank examiners won't care - the bank starts with X dollars and winds up with X dollars. See, the law of conservation of dollars. Did you see the physics ruse explanation I did there?
Anybody want to cash this check I've written for one million potential dollars?
Please.
By the way, I've often wondered if the physicists would have swallowed the idea of potential energy if it had been called 'Magical Fairy Dust' instead. Try this on for size: "When you lift a weight up in a gravitational field you increase its Magical Fairy Dust - when you drop the weight its Magical Fairy Dust is converted into kinetic energy." Probably not huh - potential energy sounds so scientific - Magical Fairy Dust exposes the concept as the intellectual fraud and self deception it really is.

The A-12 was developed largely because that U-2 was shot down in 1960. It operated throughout the 1960s, but SR-71 aircraft operated for many years afterward.
Much of the reason we don't use them now is because we use satellites.
I guess I still wish we did because they are a symbol of exceptionalism. But that's kinda silly. B1-Bs fly very high at mach 3 and blow stuff up anywhere they want to.
