Another governmental shutdown looming? Republican Representatives rebelled against their leadership and killed a short-term spending measure.
The vote failed, 195-230, after Democrats pulled their support for the bill and Republican leaders were forced to scramble for enough votes entirely within their own ranks. Four dozen conservatives voted against the bill because it left spending levels for 2012 higher than the cap set in the House GOP budget. It sounds to me like the Donks left the dinner party early and the GOP didn't have enough money left to cover the bill.
I don't think Teh Bernank's "Operation Twist" announcement had quite the short-term effect he was hoping for. FT's Alphaville weighs in with this judgement: "Equities investors do. Not. Like." What is there to like? Teh Bernank basically just told savers to go fornicate themselves for an undetermined (but lengthy) period of time.
Spain may be the biggest threat to the Eurozone, not Greece. Though any of the PIIGS could fill that role, really. If any piece of the rickety contraption fails, the whole thing collapses.
Is unemployment really so bad, compared to previous recessions? Probably not so much...if you accept the Labor Bureau's numbers. I don't. The "official" numbers put the unemployment rate at around 9.1%, but since this number excludes those "not looking for work" (left the workforce entirely) and those who are underemployed or can only find short-term work, the real rate is probably closer to 13%, maybe as high as 15%. Our recovery is also terribly slow, which may mean that we face a chronically high unemployment rate -- which is to say that the unemployment rate may no longer be tied to the business cycle, but may in fact be structural.
USPS: "Help us, Obi Wan Kenobi! You're our only hope!"
There is evidence of the hand of Sauron in the Lightsquared imbroglio.
Median household incomes: dismal. Or...maybe not so much.
The plutocracy story forces us to confront another fallacy that is absolutely sacred to journalists: That there is a fixed group of people called “the rich” who are taking advantage of the rest of us.The composition of the rich keeps changing too. Anyone worried about the income disparities in America is worried about people like Michael Oher, the NFL player and star of the book “The Blind Side” who, five years ago, was a college student without much income and is today paid millions to block for the Baltimore Ravens. Should we be worried about the huge disparity in income that has cropped up in only five years between Michael Oher and himself?
Solyndra and the perils of industrial policy. When short term political gain and "optics" drive the policy (not to mention the quasi-religious cult of "green" that pervades this Administration), a lousy outcome is almost guaranteed. This is also what comes of letting academics and community organizers conduct the nation's business policy -- few of them have any actual experience running a private-sector business at a profit. They have no idea how the private-sector economy works. As Raymond Stanz so memorably said to Peter Venkman: "You've never been out of college! You don't know what it's like out there! I've worked in the private sector. They expect results."
Weekly jobless claims fall...a bit. Cynic that I am, I simply await the inevitable revision upwards.
In case you forgot, Rhode Island (member in good standing of the LOTB) is still on a rocket-sled ride to insolvency due to public-sector pension and healthcare costs.
Public-employee unions are ripping off taxpayers in Illinois, but you already knew that. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
UPDATE 1: I'm a space geek, and I firmly believe that letting NASA continue to drive our nation's efforts in space is a guarantee of DOOM, so here's Rand Simberg's "The Fable of the Shoes".
Like people who canÂ’t imagine life without a government post office, or air traffic control (itÂ’s private in Switzerland), or other things with which they have no experience, they canÂ’t conceive of space activities that donÂ’t consist of a few government employees on top of a really big rocket, with lots more government employees at desks in control rooms directing the show.
UPDATE 2: From Ben in the sidebar: Elizabeth Warren wants you to know that no one ever got rich on their own. Her basic error, which all leftists share, is that the rich are somehow taking advantage of everyone else, rather than using the commons as is their right (being taxpayers). Warren sees the capitalist using the commons; she does not see the wages they pay their employees, the taxes they pay, or the quality of life they bring to the community. Warren's viewpoint is made explicit when she says that businesses can "keep a big chunk" of their earnings -- all money belongs to Leviathan, don't you know, and they will graciously allow the business to keep some of their own money.

Obama is a Stuttering Clusterfuck of a Miserable Failure.
And awaiting the upward revision of the unemployment numbers isn't cynical. It's empirical.
If someone's up for doing some research, it would be interesting to know the last time the unemployment numbers were NOT revised up under the current Administration.

Let 'em. I'm firmly in the camp that says most of the Nation will actually be happy with a government "shut down." Especially when they realize how little of the government actually shuts down.
What'll drive me crazy is when the numbers come in (showing how popular the shut down is, how much money its saved, or both), and the Media will suddenly reverse it's tune and sing the praises of the noble, valiant Democrats who stopped the Republican Juggernaut.

every once in a while i tune into Jim Cramer to see how he's spinning reality. Even Kudlow is losing his wide eyed optimism.
And how much longer do we and the media keep saying, "we might be entering another recession or downturn". I've been under the impression that we are going through one now.

(Bloomberg) More Americans than forecast filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance payments last week as the labor market struggled to improve.
Applications for jobless benefits decreased 9,000 in the week ended Sept. 17 to 423,000, Labor Department figures showed today. Economists forecast 420,000 claims, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. The average number of claims in the past month rose for a fifth straight week, to the highest level since July 16.
At least it wasn't unexpected. You know what will turn things around? More taxes. Yes, by golly. A few more trillion in new taxes will get this whole economy turned around.

I think it's time that we find some way to substitute the concept of "we're past raising taxes and into class warfare/ property confiscation" every time the left involks the phrase "fair share". We need to convey the concept that they're substituting an argument of "fair share" for rationalization of their overspending in the first place.
The concepts are simple but too wordy to be conveyed in only 2 words so that the jackass liberals can wrap their minds around it like they do "fair share". Let's face it: every time the lower classes hear the words "fair share" it involks the greed the left's class warfare verbage has been stoking for decades. And from that point on it's a visceral reaction with no rationalization for most of the voters that buy into it.
We can't force people to think or even to buy into our line of reasoning. But we need to at least control the conversation so that every underachieving looser doesn't react like Pavlov's dog and envision a future paid by other people's wealth every time the left involks the phrase "fair share". And that *IS* what's happening in the media right now in this discussion.

In this, Rick Perry aligns with the Bush agenda. And of course, Mitt stands to preserve the status quo of corruption stamped with his face for four years.
That Mitt would act and speak as though the Republicans have never tried to garner public support to reform the social security program for the younger adult generation is just so Romney. That applies to Flake and Issa, as well. So much for endorsements. Words, just words. "Promise anything, just get their vote."

I believe she misspoke: "This is no one in this country who got stupid on their own."
Feckless teachers in thrall to corrupted unions, an entertainment industry racing to find the lowest of lowest common denominators for their product, and old school media from which any divergence of opinions was purged long ago all played major roles. Toss in her own willingness to embrace stupid and there you have it.

Okay, given that such is true... Job Growth doesn't "come" from immigration (at least, not more than some minor amount). Job Growth comes from businesses making hiring decisions because they need more people (we say this every day here at the HQ). So- doesn't that just mean that 81% of the new jobs in Texas went to immigrants? And given that most of our population growth is due to immigration (remember- that stat includes people from other states immigrating to Texas), doesn't that just kind of go hand-in-hand?
So, really, isn't that just saying, "Hey, people who moved to Texas found jobs."

Bernanke felt constrained about QE3 after the letter from the Republican Senators plus Perry's 'almost treasonous' crack. Also even the BS inflation number (the one without food and gas in it) has crept up to the 3.5% range, his stated inflation goal. So he cannot ease anymore. For now.

Best case scenario, supposing we get a president who manages to undo the Regulation Orgy of the Obama years within a few months of gaining office, we could begin seeing some signs of recovery by 2014, at which point, the economy will be sitting on 6 years of suppressed consumer demand, which should spring back strongly.
More likely, we will be muddling through this for the rest of the decade.

Clearly written so long ago it means nothing.
First: State Law (and possibly city ordnance), not Federal Law. We've had that part of this argument before. Second, this had nothing to do with the fact it was a religious gathering- it had do with the fact that neighbors complained regularly.
If you had a Monday Night Football gathering that brought in more than 50 people to your house, you would be fined, too.

My kids attend a great school that unfortunately has absolutely no schoolyard. It is a parking lot - a slab of asphalt with no playground or other redeemable value. The parent council is trying to raise grant money from private sources to renovate the schoolyard into an educational and fun place for the kids.
Our school, St. Mark in Etobicoke, ON, is a finalist for a $20000 Majesta grant for an outdoor classroom. This would completely cover one piece of our dream for the schoolyard. The catch is that the final award is determined by voting. These are elementary school kids in poor neighborhoods who don't have access to social media, so we're trying to round up as many votes as we can.
If Canadian based morons (that aren't already voting for another school) could help us out, we'd be so grateful. I'd ask US morons to help as well, but it doesn't seem to allow voting from US IP addresses.
Voting occurs every day until November 4th at majestatreesofknowledge.ca. Please vote for St. Mark early and often!

"New cracks have begun to show in President Obama’s support amongst African Americans, who have been his strongest supporters. Question for the morons and Monty:
Lately, everyone is saying that 47% or 50% of the country pays no income tax. Technically, that is correct. But is it REALLY correct?
I mean, everyone who works pays about 12.4% in payroll taxes for Social Security. But since that money goes straight into the general fund, isn't it really an income tax? I mean, I know it is called the Federal Insurace Contributions Act tax, but in reality, it's just an income tax, right?

Disillusionment is disheartening. Tough toenails. If candidates play on ignorance and bigotry, don't endorse with a vote.
It isn't as if any political party has existed as long in America as the Constitution has.
Parties come and go with the times and needs of voters. And loyalty to
either major political party today does not equate to loyalty to the
Constitution.
RNC take note that the tea party movement voters appreciate advice that George Washington gave the nation.
Don't trust a political party to perpetuate Constitutional Governance
when by its nature, the party will abuse authority in self perpetuation
at the demise of the Constitution.
Aside from representing the "last hope of the world", the US Constitution is centrist. On the right are elitist authoritarians enforcing feudalism aligned with monarchism protecting their own vested interest versions of establishment status quo, and on the left are authoritarians aligned in socialism's varied versions of establishment status quo usurping from others.
As Vic noted, America became socialist since the fiend W.Wilson a century ago.
It isn't simply the way that our federal government has unconstitutionally revised itself to function as omnipotent, as if omniscient as well. It's the value system inherent in the generations born after WWII that assume their version of socialism as "centrist" and the Constitution as something too inconvenient and outmoded to matter, no longer relevant, certainly no point of infraction being "a hill worth dying on." Alinsky acolytes don't exercise logic, so don't fall for their bigotry. Americans who still honor the Constitution seem radical to those whose sole purpose is being popular within a socialist establishment.
America's "Traditional Values" protect the US Constitution. If the candidates know more about economic viability than others, all the better for America. If they appreciate history and diplomatic understanding in different cultures, the better chance America prospers. If they value America's sovereign liberty, border security and strong national defense, great. If they are prepared to purge corruption, bravo. If you expect to hear a real debate tonight, don't hold your breath for the menu recycling regurgitated propaganda sound bites. DOOM: Lie to me.

Posted by: Hussein the Plumber at September 22, 2011 07:11 AM (jx2j9)
It's a complex issue. Since what the Libs are talking about is raising the Marginal income tax rate, not the FICA tax rate, it is both technically correct, and correct in context.
If, for some reason, we were talking about "Total Tax Burden" and someone claimed there were any people (except maybe the homeless) who pay 0 taxes, it would be incorrect.
Mostly, we say "47% (or whatever) don't pay income tax" because what everyone is talking about is the marginal tax rate. The very fact that Democrats have resorted to pointing out (as they have in several columns) that "the poor pay taxes on their income, too" just shows that the issue isn't about taxation so there's enough money, but taxation as a form of "Social Justice."

Which goes to the issue of why should a billionaire pay more than a regular working stiff? Aren't we, in the eyes of the law THIS---> (in theory) all equal as citizens? If everyone paid exactly the same, then that would be fair. 10% of your income. No ifs, ands, buts or deductions. Everyone has the so-called "skin in the game." Never happen as it would effectively neutralize the statists and leftists.

What do you think would happen in a nation where the stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure's regime kowtows to Muzzies with constant, unquestioning enabling from the media and the town (NYC) itself is run by a nanny asshole who will believe in "inclusion" right up to the moment when some terrorist comes after him with a knife?
P.S. it doesn't help that the Jews -- full disclosure: I am one -- in NYC and elsewhere in America are hell-bent on suicidally supporting "tolerance" and "diversity," even when the recipients of their support want to wipe them off the world map.
Ooooh, look...shiny!

Well, yes, that's absolutely true (I'm a Flat Tax guy myself). The big deal to me, though, about the progressive income tax system is that it punishes success- making success less attractive.
Why go make something of yourself and build your own wealth when the Government will just take from those who do, and give it to you who won't?

subject: Jobs jobs jobs jobs
[redacted],
In DC, they're all talking about the deficit. However, the real crisis in America is the lack of jobs.
Last week, Senator Jeff Merkley had a simple idea to change the narrative: The Congressional Budget Office should score the deficit Super Committee's budget package for its impact on jobs.
Please join Daily Kos and Senator Jeff Merkley and call on the Super Committee to support two principles:
1. Independent review: Its budget package should be given an independent review by the Congressional Budget Office to measure how many jobs it creates or eliminates.
2. Do no harm: Reject any budget package that would cost more jobs than it creates.
Please sign this critical petition. With your grassroots support, Senator Merkley will be more likely to succeed in making jobs the top priority.
Keep fighting,
Chris [Cocksucker] Bowers
Campaign Director, Daily Kos

If it is a problem I recommend finding out if they are in violation of the local zoning laws. If they are visit the local county or city council meeting to remind them that zoning laws are like deed covenants.
Failure to enforce any of them makes them ALL invalid. Let them know that since they have decided to abandon the zoning laws you intend to open an industrial pig farm. complete with waste lagoons.

From a moral standpoint, many things that are related in reality are "independent" of each other. However, since they're related in reality- the "moral standpoint" is somewhat academic.
An income tax taxes productivity- It's not my favorite, but I'm not huge fan of consumption taxes (especially on necessities) either- so pick your poison there. A progressive income tax (where we not only tax the rich more, but we tax them relatively more) not only taxes productivity, but it also depresses success- and leads directly to the redistributive scheme we have today.

In August, the official said, Solydra's investors informed the company and DOE that they would not loan Solyndra any more money unless DOE agreed to another restructuring that would have required significant concessions. It was determined that those concessions would have the government, and taxpayers, in a significantly worse position and DOE rejected the terms. DOE did offer to consider whether there might be other more mutually acceptable ways forward. But before those discussions could be completed, the company ran out of available cash.
The potential August deal and potential lifeline that the administration could have offered to Solyndra is certain to raise plenty of new questions about the final days of the company, but it does offer some explanation as to why company CEO Brian Harrison was in Washington as recently as late July telling members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee that the company was on solid financial footing. The good news here is that apparently DOE does have a threshold beyond which they won't proceed, but you've got to wonder how the terms could have gotten worse than losing it all ... guess taxpayers would lose even more.
Missing is how they ever got the load to begin with .. and those claims of "solid financial footing" OMG
