DOOM: My melancholy baby
— Monty

DOOOOM

ADP reports that the economy added 110,000 jobs in October. Nothing to be overjoyed about, but it could be a lot worse. (EDIT: However, the ADP number does show the continuing erosion in America's manufacturing employment. I don't think this means we're making less stuff; it just means that we need fewer people to do it.)

How American civilization can avoid collapse.

Are the Greeks preparing for a coup or trying to prevent one? Either way, this isnÂ’t good news.

Greece is finding out that when things go to s**t...they go to s**t fast. (Italy and Spain nod and say, “How true! How true!”)

Greece may discover that revenge tastes great, but is less filling. A note about this Greek “referendum”: it doesn’t matter whether it takes place or not. The damage is already done, the demons already set loose. The Greeks have already voted “no”, whether they know it or not.

Next up on the DOOM parade: Italy.

Peter Wallison gives a pretty good technical summary of the Eurozone's crisis. (The confusion over what banks are, what they do, what they're for, and how they're regulated is mind-boggling. I'm trying to find time to do an "Econ 101 at AoSHQ" post about it, because I think a lot of people really, really, really don't understand much about banking, especially modern fractional-reserve banking.)

B-b-b-but...didnÂ’t Teh Bernank tell us that inflation was nowhere to be seen? WhaÂ’ happen?

Two economists explain the NBA lockout.

Jon Corzine may be looking at a long vacation in the greybar hotel. Maybe he can bunk with Bernie Madoff. (Hey -- maybe there’s a sitcom in this! DIBS!) It also turns out that Jon Corzine is quite the fabulist. Who knew? This is another cautionary tale about how many financiers view “acceptable risk”. Which is to say, they totally ignore the downside and take the upside as a given. Which is great when the bet pays off -- you look like a genius. But when Dame Fortune frowns upon you...well, like I said, things can go to s**t with terrifying speed. A prudent man hopes for the best but prepares for the worst.

When is 50% really 22.5%? It's math like this that got the nations of the world into the fix they're in right now.

Katrina vanden Hooberjooberglooberdoober wants you to know that she doesnÂ’t like Republican obstructionism. Not one little bit. It reflects badly on her boyfriend Barack, and this makes her stamp her tiny little foot in rage.

Your bailout/tax dollars, hard at work: bankrupt (and bailed-out) firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac paying out more than $12 million in bonuses to 10 executives. I wonder when the “occupy” idiots will set up camp out on Fannie’s front lawn....

Where Keynes went wrong.

Keynes assumed that the initial deficient level of aggregate demand would remain unchanged until the stimulative (“pump-priming”) effect of additional government spending kicked in. In other words, increased government spending, or its anticipation, would not further diminish pre-existing levels of consumer demand and investment demand. However, KeynesÂ’s failure to consider the possibility of an adverse effect from government spending—that it might lead to still further decay in the prior levels of consumption and investment—was a fundamental flaw in the theory.

UPDATE 1: Mister Corzine chose...poorly. And since this is the NYT, they prescribe the same medicine that has thus far totally failed to work: more regulation.

UPDATE 2: Via Insty, many of the "occupy" retards are pretty well-heeled retards. It stands to reason, I guess: most genuinely poor people can't afford to just stand around all day chanting nonsense. The rent's gonna come due whether you're outraged or not.

15 From the Niall Ferguson piece:

I agree with much of it, but I thought we'd dispelled this little gem some time ago: "Yet life expectancy in the U.S. has risen from 70 to 78 in the past 50 years, compared with leaps from 68 to 83 in Japan and from 43 to 73 in China."

The rest stands up (as far as I know) but I'm getting really tired of comparing the Apples of American Life Expectancy to the inorganic matter (a rock, maybe?) of anyone else's.  When you don't count infant mortality, or don't count still-births (America counts both) your "average" climbs quite quickly.

Speaking of: did anyone else click over to that Moe Lane piece on Rick Perry?  Whatever else you think of him, you can't claim he's not bold on de-regulation/de-subsidization.  Going into Iowa and basically saying, "If you want fewer regs, you've got to accept fewer subsidies" is fairly gutsy.

I didn't have time to watch the clip at home this morning, was it as good as Moe was saying, or was he hyping it?

Fixed.

Actually, they don't want regs at all levels.  If they thought they could get away with a law that said "No law shall apply to any sitting member of Congress" they would pass it in a heartbeat.  No, they only want regs at all levels below themselves.  Which is a completely different proposition, and one that has not-too-pleasant connotations.

(Bloomberg) Two U.S. lawmakers will introduce measures to impose a transaction tax on financial firms that resembles a proposal released by the European Union.

Senator Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat, and Representative Peter DeFazio, an Oregon Democrat, will introduce the bills tomorrow in their respective chambers. The bills will give the United States an increased role in the international debate over a transaction tax, which is likely to be discussed at the Group of 20 summit this week in Cannes, France.

“It’s a significant way to raise some needed revenue,” Harkin said in an interview today in Washington. “Quite frankly, I bet nobody would even feel it.”

Morning, all!

You know, I think the Danes may be onto something here:

World's Thickest Book Details Denmark's Unemployment Benefits and Regulations (link to the Copenhagen Post Online)

The worldÂ’s thickest book is about to be published here in Denmark. The book is 23,675 pages long, but its contents and publisher are as noteworthy as its length.

Unemployment insurance company “Min A-kasse” published the book, and in its voluminous pages you can read the entire legal framework around which the country's unemployment insurance funds are administered.

The purpose of publishing the book is to encourage debate about the growing bureaucracy surrounding unemployment benefits, explained Simon Bauer, a spokesperson Min A-Kasse.

“Our goal is to show how large the bureaucracy has grown in this area,” he said.

“Bureaucracy can be difficult to understand, but it becomes more concrete when there are so many regulations that it takes the world’s largest book to publish them all.”

Half a century ago unemployment benefits legislation filled only 421 pages. That number grew to 17,000 in 2000. And since then another 7,000 have been added....

Everyone here knows that over-regulation of the private sector is a job killer, but it's difficult for the average layman to really wrap their head around that.  I bet if you published all the EPA regulations that companies have to abide by in a single volume, it would give this piece of bureucratic politospeak a run for its money in the size department.  And if people still don't understand why too much regulation is a bad thing after seeing the size of such a publication, you can politely bludgeon them with it, because there's no hope for them anyway.

Emperor Barry hath spoken, yea verily:

“So we’re going to keep on looking for everything I can do without Congress to help families economically, help rebuild our middle class, strengthen the economy. But in the meantime, I want everybody to keep on putting pressure on Congress to, you know, put country ahead of party. Don’t worry about the next election, worry about the next generation and how we’re going to build an economy where the middle class and people who want to get into the middle class have a chance to succeed,” President Obama told KUSA-TV in Denver, Colorado.

If you legitimately care about the next generation, you should be worrying about the next election.  Because getting Emperor SCOAMFOTUS out of the Oval Office is the only hope for salvaging this country for the next generation.

47 So weÂ’re going to keep on looking for everything I can do without Congress

I'm of two minds about this quote.  I try to imagine it coming from a Reagan or a pre-2008 GWB, and I don't find it nearly so objectionable.  Which means the stance itself is not the problem, the problem is the person saying it.

Of course that's a big problem.  Because what Reagan or GWB would have done "without Congress" is reign in some of the Executive Branch bureaucracies and roll back some of the things that had been done by executive order.  What Barack Obama (who is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure) wants to do is increase the power and activity of those agencies and issue more regulation-by-fiat via XO.

But let's not make too big a deal about the quote itself- because the President does actually have some power there.  Let's make sure we're pointing out the problems with this specific President saying that.

(ABC News) The story of MF Global's downward spiral, with former New Jersey governor Jon Corzine at the helm, is only starting to unfold, though some may say it was a predictable one.

With news that federal regulators are investigating whether the broker-dealer is missing customer money, the company's failure may have larger repercussions to the financial system.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said on Monday that MF Global "reported possible deficiencies in customer futures segregated accounts held at the firm."

How much blame can be placed on Corzine is unclear, though he did have an "aggressive" plan during a volatile period, said Lurie.

Like Corzine's, the futures of the company's 2,900 employees are unclear, though the Financial Times reported employees in the office in London were told not to work but were not sent home.

64 Interesting snippet on Keynes. Monty, thanks again for recommending Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson. If Keynes had read Hazlitt, or Bastiat, from whom Hazlitt gained many of his insights, he never would have made this blunder.

It astonishes me that some economists do not take into account the fact that interventions in the economy change the economy, and that people change their behavior in reaction to changed circumstances. It's as if a physician didn't consider the side-effects of his treatments, and how they affect the patient's health.

Of course, the fact that the SCOAMFOTUS has been blaming everyone and everything for the country's problems since he was elected is immaterial.  When's the last time he blamed the Japanese earthquake and tsunami for something, actually?  I'd say he's about due to throw that tragedy under the bus again.

Okay, that's good.  Nice to see them taking some action to say, "Hey, we're trying to fix things."

Of course, the problem we have with "jobs bills" is that the parties are fundamentally divided over what would "create jobs."  Republicans (more specifically: Conservatives) believe that reduced regulation, more consistent enforcement, and a smaller tax burden will create jobs, while Democrats believe that increased regulation, capricious enforcement, and higher taxes create jobs.

I agree, and I said it was nice to see.  My problem is that many (most) of those "uninformed people" are getting the majority of their "information" (propaganda might be a better word) from the major Networks.  Forget MSNBC and CNN, we're talking ABC, CBS, and NBC.  And their coverage will sound something like this:

"Republicans claim that their bills, currently stalled in the Senate, would create jobs.  But many critics disagree [Cut to Dem politician calling Republicans Evil; then cut to Liberal Economist calling Republicans Evil].  Just what it will take to convince Republicans that they're being evil, Mr. So-and-so could not say."

So, while it's nice, and it's helpful for when you run into the truly curious, it's not going to gain much traction.

This was not a dig against House Republicans, but against the low-information voter.

i'd argue we're looking at more 1916 then 1948

in 1948 the economy was good, labor unions had MUCH more power, and Dewey only made 16 speeches oppose to Truman who went around the country speaking every day.

in 1916 Wilson was unpopular, prime for losing, and the Gop was on the ups

the GOP gained in both the house and senate as Wilson was re-elected, Wilson's foe had bad GOP base support and some progressive GOPers ended up flocking to Wilson. Wilson even won the women's vote even though it was considered a locked up GOP vote then. so if your looking for seomthing to compare a bad scenario next year to, look at 1916

Okay, but you're thinking the GOP is gonna gain seats in Congress, I do not.

In 1914 the GOP gained a lot of seats in the House, lost a few in the Senate. So it's not really comparable to 2010.

I say 2012 will be like 1948 because both 2010 and 2012 will mirror 1946 and 1948 perfectly.

143 I wonder if our very own special Armageddon will change the power of guilds throughout American life? Unshackling the productivity of Americans by easing regulations is one thing; I want a paradigm shift such that all politicians or law enforcement personal that break a law suffer treble damages a mere civilian would who violates that same law. Mike Nifong? A couple decades behind bars. Charlie Rangel? At least five years in prison. Sandy Burger? Depends on if his crime was treason... But those fantasies aside, all it really takes to keep American the only superpower in the world is convincing voters that: 1. We tax our citizens more than any other country in the world and then spend all that money. 2. In addition to the taxes we collect each year and spend, we borrow more than any other country in the history of the world and then spend all that money we borrow. 3. Liberals claim, however improbably, we don't spend enough because we are a downright mean country.

Man, you need to get some happy juice.  You're making me seem like an optimist.

I think, more than 1 year out from the General Election, we're seeing the crumbling of the Obama Myth.  Those who are really "plugged in" have know that Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure for quite some time, but what with F&F finally getting at least a little attention, Solyndra, MF Global, and so forth, even the under-informed are starting to get a clue.

Add that to unrelenting high unemployment, real inflation around 10%, and a stock market that looks like it has Bi-Polar disorder (or at least ADHD), and the Democrats have a disaster in the making.

Can the GOP screw this up?  Yes, but I still hold out hope that we won't.

If it happens, you may not have to worry about voting again.

At the moment, I don't know whether to go Full Tinfoil Hat or weep. One might say getting another term for the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure is what the entitlement-hungry, more-government-is-good-for-us loons (who seem to outnumber us at present) deserve, but the kicker is that we will be forced to suffer along with them.

Our worst candidate is better than the Traitor-in-Chief, but that's not saying a lot. We don't have a "best" choice right now, especially with the eating-our-own tactics we seem to be embracing.

Democrats aren't interested in leading the country towards prosperity. The Democrats only care about leading the country.

The reality today that we have got to come to grips with is that our government has evolved, probably past the point of going back.  The people we elect are, if we are honest with ourselves, chosen for us.  We may vote, but we donÂ’t select – a big difference.  Over the last two years, collective congressional net worth has increased by 25%.  Not bad in the worst recession since the great depression.  Under these circumstances, why would we even ever dream that there would be major changes in Washington?  The thought of it is insane.  Even those we have come to delude ourselves as being worthy of our respect and admiration are, in the end, products of the current American political system.   TheyÂ’re politicians - politicians who will risk everything to preserve the current system, and that is the unvarnished truth.  We can have our fun arguing politics, but in the end we the people – mean nothing.

I'm afraid you're right, HtP.

For example, the Senate seat in MA will be sold for roughly $20M in 2012.

If you're part of the big special interest group who buys that seat, you win. If you're an ordinary independent citizen, you lose.

166 Perhaps the most major problem I have with most of the candidates (and the reason I still support Perry, Newt (to a lesser extent), and even Santorum (to a much lesser extent) is that they all have the problem of having enough ego to run for President.

Think about how much self-assurance you have to have to do that.  I tremble at the thought of that kind of responsibility, and might well run away from it even if called upon to shoulder it.  They actively seek it out.  For years.  Spending millions.  Straining their families.  Think about that.

So, since they are all fatally flawed by that very (necessary) trait, the only thing I can look at and trust (I certainly can't trust their words) is their record.  Those three, in my opinion, have the best record of Conservatism and facing down Democrats.

Both are necessary.  If we don't deal with the reality, it will slap us in the face.  But if we focus only on that, we may well become despondent, and reluctant to do what is necessary.

I'm not sure if I'm more afraid that you're right, or that you're wrong.

Because, even if successful, this behavior just leads to anarchy- which is bad.  But it does show an unwillingness to let us slide into the very tyranny our Founding Fathers so forcefully rejected.

From the headlines thread this morning:

Suspected U.S. Militia Members Charged in Plot to Attack Government Officials

Four suspected members of a fringe north Georgia militia group were arrested Tuesday by federal authorities and charged with plotting to buy explosives and trying to make a deadly toxin in a bizarre plot to attack unnamed government officials.

The four men in their 60s and 70s were part of a group that also tried to obtain an unregistered explosive device and sought out the complex formula to produce ricin, a biological toxin that can be lethal in small doses, according to a federal complaint.

Given what we know about F&F I don't have a lot of confidence in this case. Are these oldsters hardened fanatics or are they the victims of the government creating a crime so they can have some more "home grown" terrorism to fuel Janet Uglytono's PR machine?
