DOOM: Quick hits
— Monty

DOOOOM

[I'm kind of busy this morning, so I'm afraid this is just going to be a link-dump. Sorry.]

The "meh" CBO report is even more "meh" than expected.

Steve Jobs calling it a day as CEO of Apple.

Why the Eurobond idea is stupid.

Looking forward to AmericaÂ’s next credit downgrade.

That whole Greek loan-collateral dustup in Europe is getting worse.

Keynesian economics versus regular economics.

There are two ways to view Keynesian stimulus through transfer programs. It's either a divine miracle—where one gets back more than one puts in—or else it's the macroeconomic equivalent of bloodletting.

Marcellus Shale “bonanza” not such a bonanza after all.

Gold -- the worldÂ’s currency. (But it did fall to earth a bit.)

More “green” FAIL.

All eyes look to Teh Bernank.

I wondered how long it would be before some moonstruck Donk with fond misremembrances of FDR would trot out the “bring back the WPA!” line, and lo! so it happened.

Regarding the desire for a WPA-style jobs plan: Why not use spoons?

How QE2 went wrong. Technical, but interesting if youÂ’re into that kind of thing.

This whole article could be replaced with five words: AND THEN A MIRACLE HAPPENS!

“Kill the quants before they kill us.”

Reminder: A VAT is a bad idea if you're a fan of small government.

UPDATE 1: Deficits mean nothing! Spend! Spend like the wind, you wingnut gun-toting Jesus-shouting slope-heads!

6 I have a serious question. It is widely reported that Obama has added $4 trillion of debt in 2.5 years, as much as Bush did in 8. But I remember the Bush years, and the annual deficits never exceeded .5 trillion, the worst one was 400 billion. To accumulate 4 trillion, you would need to average 500 billion for all 8 years. So how did Bush add 4 trillion when his worst deficit was less than the average? It does not add up.

9 So how did Bush add 4 trillion when his worst deficit was less than the average?

There may be some rounding involved. Also 2007-8 (the ones with budgets passed by Democrat Congresses) were really bad compared to the first 6 years.

As for the VAT, all of the countries circling the bowl right now have this in common: High entitlement spending, low defense spending and high taxation, including VATs. And yet, swirl they do.

If the stupid party wasn't quite so stupid, they could be ripping the rock star euro tour and point out that this is where Obama gets his brilliant ideas. 'Do we want to end up like the EU?'

>>>>>CNBC is devastated that Jobs resigned. You'd think the family dog died or something. Some of the stuff almost sounds like a eulogy.

Well it pretty much is. I'm guessing he's near death.

Also it is a shame because whether or not you like apple or not, it's a great company that puts out great  and innovative products that people like and buy voluntarily.

It doesn't need massive government subsidies to function and it's a well run company that doesn't remain stagnant like say Microsoft.

I'm not an apple person myself, other than the ipod, but they clearly produce quality products. I got my first ipod in 2002 and it lasted me until about 3 months ago when some jackass stole it from my car.

It's a great American company and a lot of (most?) of its success is due to Steve Jobs. He's essentially an Ayn Rand type character. Someone who produces because that's what he knows how to do best.

Well a declining housing market, declining industrual numbers, and an earthquake led to a +300 day in the Dow, so I assume a direct hit by a major hurricane to NYC can only be bullish.

Does it matter?

You characterized it as a great American company. Great + American, I think, only really matters in terms of how many of us it employs (usefully-folks making hybrids are probably not making the best possible use of their time). If you want to assert that it's stock is worth owning, you can probably make that case, I just think different language would be appropriate.

Now that there isn't a surplus, they can't borrow from it any more. Basically the budgeters  assumed we'd stiff future SS recipients all along.

You poor thing.  Not only moving in a hurricane, but moving to Connecticut in a hurricane.  That's like a double whammy.

My worst hurricane experience happened in 1984 during Hurricane Gloria.  I was four years old, and I had eaten a peanut butter chip cookie our neighbors had given me.  I was and still am deathly allergic to peanut, so there I was having an anaphylactic attack in the middle of a hurricane.  My poor parents had to drive me to Concord Hospital, which was about half an hour away in good weather.

Fun times.  Fun times.

Oh man, that link in the side bar is creepy and hilarious.

It looks like Gadahfi had a picture book filled with nothing but photos of Condi Rice in his bedroom.

I wonder if there was a bottle of Jergens and a box of tissue paper in the vicinity.

We gots a tailor made scenario here for trouble, the earth is soft from all the rainfall.  Since it's really sandy, guess what tips over in strong winds? Yes, all those lovely 60-70 ft tall oak trees. You know, the ones that provide shade in the back yard.  Probably won't happen, but we would lose the garage and part of one bedroom, if the worst occurred.  Not a good thing to contemplate.

97 For those of you dealing with Irene the Irksome, I suggest you go inland and away from the storm surge, hunker down someplace solid, stay inside, and get gloriously blitzed for the duration of the storm.  The first three are survival, and the last would definitely have helped my nerves and boredom during the last two of the damned things I had to put up with...

Pirates know stuff about Gold. We seize it at any opportunity, sometimes store it, sometimes sell it.

We know the landlubbers may sometimes want it, and sometimes not want it. When they want it, we sell it to them at the highest prices. When they do not want it, we sieze more gold and wait.

Eventually the landlubbers always want it. Pirates know this.

109 methos - but I though Buffet the market genius had invested 5B in BoA?

As with any intervention, you get a bump. Then people figure out why the intervention was necessary and some of them get out while the bump is still there. I think FBN said the deal leaves Buffet the option of purchasing shares in January at around $7.14 each (or maybe that was the deal-there are a number of ways to manipulate a stock's price, I'm just assuming he outright bought $5B from BoA), I don't think that'll look like such a deal when the time comes.

Posted by: Methos at August 25, 2011 06:22 AM (sOXQX)

110 81 Bank of America up to $8.50 (from just under $7) a share on news Warren Buffett's throwing $5 billion into it. It'll be interesting to see how long the bump from his intervention lasts.

I don't know much but BAC was supposedly having trouble raising money. At ZH, the comment was this indicates they were locked out of raising capital any other way.

They also insisted they had no problems, but then, why would they be issuing preferred shares to Buffett?

Even better question: Why would Buffett buy? Answer: BAC is to-big-to-fail and Buffett is counting on a bailout. Since he is buddies with JEF, I'd bet he has been assured that a bailout will happen.

This is part of the reason for economic uncertainty - no one has ANY idea what the government will do. Normally if you though a bank like this was having big time problems you could short it like mad, but with Uncle Sam stepping in, but doing so irregularly, you have no idea if you might be wiped out when the taxpayers are driven to the rescue.

Wait...what?  Did the striking union members apply for unemployment!?

Posted by: Tami at August 25, 2011 09:07 AM (X6akg)

Yes, they are claiming that's the reason why the unemployment number unexpectedly went up

(CNBC) Striking Verizon workers filed 8,500 claims for jobless benefits last week, after submitting 12,500 applications the previous week, which covered the period for the August nonfarm payrolls survey.

That suggests that the strike would have a negative affect on the payrolls count, which will be reported on Sept. 2.

I didn't think that striking workers are eligible for unemployment. Of course I didn't think that illegals could get government benefits.
