DOOM: Road to nowhere
— Monty

DOOOOM

$250 million Medicare dollars squandered. The fiasco leaves some feeling pumped, while others just feel deflated because they have gotten the shaft. Government's response was limp.

The Supercommittee fails, and some kind of enforced spending cuts are supposed to come into play. Yet no one really expects significant defense cuts, nor any significant entitlement cuts. So the whole thing was basically a giant waste of time...time that we don't really have to waste. Fire them all. Out of a cannon. Into the sun.

The incredible shrinking work force. The problem with the thinking of too many people, especially Democrats, is that they don't understand that employment is a side-effect of a business concern, not the purpose of it. The purpose of a business is to provide a good or service at a profit. Until the government makes doing business easier in this country -- by cutting through the thicket of regulatory red tape, by instituting a non-punitive tax regime, and by making sure the workforce is educated in the skills businesses need -- the employment picture will not improve. The government cannot 'create' jobs; all they can do is prepare the ground on which commerce can flourish. And so far, they've been sowing salt in the earth so that nothing can grow there.
The problems with the Euro were entirely predictable, and many skeptics foresaw this kind of crisis before the Euro was even implemented. All you had to do was look at the economic, political, and structural realities of the European nations to know it would never work.

Europe, systemic risk, and the governing elite.

This shift from “one person, one vote,” to “one euro, one vote,” is dispelling the illusion that the welfare state can be the primary source of a country’s living standard, and a protector of the middle class. The governing elite were all to happy to provide generous transfer payments to those not working and to fund a bloated public sector with high wages and even more generous pensions.
To paraphrase Nat King Cole: never has any economy been more...unsustainable.

Europe may be looking at a decade-long recession. That may be one of the postiive scenarios, too; that may be the outcome if all goes according to plan. If not...DOOM.

Teh Krugman causes a spacetime rift when he accuses other people of being clueless. The incredible density of stupidity and smugness all compacted into such a small area caused a quantum singularity to form. If you can stand the dangerous radiation and gravitational fields, the piece is worth reading for the (purely unintentional) hilarity. ItÂ’s always fun to listen to far-left idiots lecture the GOP on how they should behave, what they should believe, and the proper conduct one should exhibit among the Great Unwashed.

Federal regulator approves ‘MF Global Rule’. This is known to such vulgar persons as myself as “closing the barn door after the horse has run out”.

S&P to all 17 Euro nations: BAM! (Well, not ‘BAM!’ quite yet. It’s a “downgrade wach” and not an actual downgrade.) The problem, as always, is dim prospects for future growth. Promises for reform are all well and good, and may actually even happen, but without growth there's not much point to the exercise. And in Europe, it's very difficult to see where the growth is going to come from, given the Europeans' low aggregate birthrate, stifling work and commerce rules, onerous tax regimes, and vast welfare state.

Public pensions: some numbers and reality. Pull quote: “The numbers you can believe all point to bankruptcy and here they are for the last ten years and a little beyond.”

Speaking the obvious: the US will follow the same fiscal-crisis path as the EU if we donÂ’t put on the brakes soon.

“Fiscal union” in the EU means a substantial loss of sovereignty for smaller nations, and the citizens of those nations may choose independence over a common currency regardless of the cost. (I disagree with Pritchard-Evans’ disdain for austerity in the South, however; the 'surpluses' he extols in Spain and Italy were illusory at best, and more than offset by high unemployment and low productivity in both countries.)

Italy is broke, and breaking the news to the citizens isnÂ’t easy for politicians and officials who have spent literally decades hiding the truth. And citizens who have been counting on cushy pensions and early retirements, or a comfortable life on the public dole, are in for a rude shock.

Why “too big to fail” means “wait for it”.

The rise and fall of Jon Corzine. This Democrat golden boy has fallen from a great height, but I'm sure his liberal chums will forgive him as long as he keeps mouthing good progressive platitudes. (Oh, and guess which one of our favorite ex-Presidents is mixed up with MF Global?)

Death to pennies!

Broke-as-a-joke Illinois "finds" money to keep the lights on.

Some of the money for the facilities is available because Quinn used his veto powers earlier this year to cut education spending, particularly $89 million that helped pay for school buses. Officials also found surplus money in a special fund that helps support government pension systems. The struggling pensions get the full amount they were promised, but the extra $95 million is going to other programs deemed more urgent.

"This economy is no place for young men."

UPDATE 1: If you're looking for a job, there's an opportunity down Florida way. Two words, kids: gator bounties.

8 Do we not have ANY competent people in Washington? I know, stupid question.

The problem is that Medicare now caters to people who are not retired- nor will be for some time.  Medicare part T (End Stage Renal Disease is the qualification) ensures people who have, more often than not, pickled their own kidneys and livers.  And we pay for their medical care for the rest of their lives.

Many of these people are in their late 30's to mid 40's.  For them, ED really is a medical condition, and therefore something "medically necessary" to treat.  However, Medicare doesn't actually get to decide, based on age, whether or not someone is eligible for a given benefit (they do still get to use gender, since women will never, ever have a prostate exam).  So, since ED treatment is considered "Medically Necessary" for some enrollees, it must be considered "Medically Necessary" for all (male) enrollees.

I liked the penny video.

I hate pennies so much.  I know there are people collecting pre-1982 pennies and waiting for them to be discontinued.

I also think we should phase out the dollar bill and use the dollar coins. They last much longer in circulation and we printed up a ton of them that are sitting in a warehouse.

12 And a hot cup of Doom to you all.

I learned last night at least I can do OK in self defense come the collapse.

Had a speed drill stage. With a standard IDPA target set 5 yards in front of you. At the signal draw and place 6 rounds on target.

With my 1911 my total time was 3.03 seconds. 5 of the shots landed in the 8 inch center circle. One I pulled about an inch out at 7 o'clock.

The crazy good IPSC grand master shooting with us did it in 2.03 seconds.

I was pleased.

Simple.  It is very easy to impact job creation in a negative manner by taxes, legislation, and regulations.  The converse is not true, especially when you feel you cannot trust the government!

Unfortunately, neither do the Argentines. When Argentina attacked in 1982, they were ruled by a military Junta and had a fairly well funded navy and army. That's not true anymore. I think they have like 4 destroyers and a bunch of other smaller ships.

Anti-ship technology is so advanced these days, I would be willing to bet the Brits could sink the Argentine navy with an appropriate amount of sorties.

This is disturbing though. Argentina has no claim to the Falkland Islands(or Malvinas as they call them). There are no historical ties or even geographic ties.  It's not like every country owns the Islands off their coast. We don't own the Bahamas, China doesn't own the Spratleys, Japan doesn't own all the Kurile islands.

Simply because an island is near your country doesn't give you ownership. Besides, the people of the Falklands have voted to remain associated with the UK.

The only reason Argentina cares is the Falklands are surrounded by oil, some of the greatest fisheries in the world, and as a tool to stir up nationalism for failing Argentine governments.

Ah, yes. Watching the slow-motion death of the West, with excellent reportage by Monty. I'm not sure why I engage in this painful exercise every morning. I'm starting to think there is some deep pathology in me.
Being from Illinois, I've long been desensitized to governmental folly. Of course in Illinois it's all a spectator sport, since we've long ago dispensed with the pretense of conservatism and honoring the individual.
But it's liberating - I will write in Calvin Coolidge for president. His ghost is a far better choice for the office, and the state will certainly go for Obama.

Even so, that's a lot of expense to be borne by business.  Imagine having to go in to every store in the nation, and calculate the exact prices you would have to have so that prices after taxes and any other fees come to a multiple of 5 cents.

At the opening of the Bonn II conference in Germany, Monday, Karzai said, "The people of Afghanistan are looking to this conference for clear affirmation of commitment to make security transition and economic progress irreversible." American officials who heard the comments said there was no doubt that "commitment" meant a steady gusher of U.S. dollars. 45 BigGovernment has an article up about how the Treasury is robbing US savers blind with their ZIRP:

About a month ago, I posted in regard to what I called “the euthanasia of the saver.” This comment had to do with the fact that nominal interest rates in the United States for financial investments such as bank certificates of deposit and bank savings accounts—the kinds of investments traditionally employed by retired persons and small savers, who wish to gain income without exposing their funds to great risk of capital loss—now fall considerably below the rate of inflation, and hence the real (or inflation-adjusted) yield on such investments is negative. That is, the nominal payoff is insufficient to offset the loss of purchasing power of the money invested.

Caution, they use some math in the article.

I've always worried about the impact this would have on the arts--especially the midnight ballet.

Years ago, shortly after the introduction of the 'loonie' (the hoser dollar coin), a friend visited some local 'ballerinas'.  Back then, a common practice for some rail fans used to be to lay on the stage with a dollar bill between the lips while the ballerinas removed it with some...err...sweater puppet manipulation.

Aforementioned friend figured he could have even more fun using the loonie in this fashion.  The amused performer came over and decided to have some of her own fun by giving him a one-two combo with her weapons.  Since he wasn't prepared for that the first shot knocked the coin loose into his mouth and the second shot caused an involuntary swallowing.

It took two days, but it finally 'passed' in an unsurprisingly painful fashion...slightly discoloured of course.  He drilled a hole in the middle of it and wore it on a necklace for some time.

True story.

Winters can be long here.

66 I do durable medical equipment supplies through Medicare and  I've actually billed Medicare for a Penis Pump before and even though the topic is funny there is less to this story than meets a one eyed snake.  The guy I did it for was a middle aged man who  had erectile dysfunction caused by Prostate cancer  and drugs like viagra didn't work for him..  We had a script from his doctor and we followed Medicare protocols and even then Medicare rejected the claim and we had to get a Letter of Medical Necessity from the doctor to get the claim paid. So its not like Medicare just gives them away.
I'm not sure how much fraud goes on in Medicare but Medicare has tightened up their rules for DME supplies a lot over the years (it used to be in the 80's they paid for everything.  It was the golden commode era, seriously, that's what it was called).  Just my 2 cents on a moronic topic that I know about.

70 Yes we are currently "legally" importing foreign labor in the hundreds of thousands.

A partial list of the 66,000 annual jobs certified for foreign workers by US Dept of Labor. The employer must certify to DOL that there is a "labor shortage" for these jobs before getting the cheap willing workers.  The program is called H2B which is designated for "unskilled laborers".

FOREST WORKER
LOG CHIPPER OPERATOR
RECREATION FACILITY ATTENDANT
LABORER, LANDSCAPE
HYDROELECTRIC MACHINERY MECHANIC
PRODUCTION HELPER
FISH CLEANER
PAINTER, TRANSPORTATION EQUIPMENT
CANNERY WORKER
CONSTRUCTION WORKER I
HOUSEKEEPER
COACH, PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES
LABORER, LANDSCAPE
AUTOMOTIVE COOLING SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TECHNICIAN
WAITER/WAITRESS, INFORMAL
HOUSEKEEPER
METAL FABRICATOR
LABORER, LANDSCAPE
HOUSEKEEPER, HOME
WAITER/WAITRESS
FAST FOODS WORKER
FISH ROE TECHNICIAN
GROUNDSKEEPER, INDUSTRIAL COMMERCIAL
CLEANER, HOUSEKEEPING
WAITER/WAITRESS
SALESPERSON, COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES
HEAD COACH
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
SHELLFISH SHUCKER
AMUSEMENT PARK WORKER

You know any Americans who might want these jobs? Too bad.
The employer just has to say that the American was unsuitable in some way in order to to get some dirt cheap, uncomplaining serfs "legal aliens".

H2A is for agricultural workers and brings thousands into the country to do farm work....that Americans won't do for pennies on the dollar.

H1B is technical workers. I.T. workers.

All of it is just a semi-legal cover to smuggle aliens.

Yes, and that's fine.  Tell me again why some shop-keeper in Topeka should pay for his ED treatment at all?

I've worked in Health Care for most of my professional life.  As a Payer (BlueCross/BlueSheild of Texas), as a Clearing House, as a Benefit Administrator, and as a TPA Payer.  I know more than a little about how this stuff works.

That does not, for one minute, change the fact I think it's ridiculous that someone can get a tax-payer funded penis pump.  I shouldn't be paying for that.

72 Front to Left, I have tried the M&P. A friend owns one. Nice piece but its trigger could be better.

The best striker-fired trigger I have seen is on Springfield's XD series. Impressed me enough that I bought one from a friend when I had no need at all for a third 9mm.

I own the M&P's cheap brother the Sigma. Points great but the trigger is heavy like a DA revolver. I got it because I just couldn't resist the price with the rebate they were running in 2009.

83 84, it's not pleasant to think about but we do short-circuit natural selection with all our medical advancements.

Without them think of all the maladies that might drop from the gene pool by dying before they reach breeding age.

There are only a handful of solutions to what ails us.

3) Some combination of 1 and 2.

Actually, the only viable option is #1.  Raising taxes won't work: by the time tax rates are high enough to impact anything, the rich will have fled or already sheltered their earnings, and the middle-class and poor don't make enough to tax that deeply.  Complete confiscation of wealth would be required- and I don't think Washington is quite that suicidal.

Haven't worked there for a while.  Sorry.

But why would BCBS have a bill?  The only things they should have are the Claim (which is not exactly the same) and any Remittance Advice (showing what the allowed/disallowed and what they paid or what is your responsibility.  Usually called an Explanation of Benefits).  The bill should come from your provider (doctor, hospital, whoever).  They don't provide the claims to members (usually), though if you ask for it specifically ("I need a copy of the claim filed by my [doctor, hospital, pharmacy, etc.].") HIPAA requires that they provide it to you.

Also: Which BCBS?  Each one is a separate entity (BCBSTX is not the same as BCBSOK, or BCBSMA).

From a practical standpoint, that forced me to reevaluate. I'll keep my 1911s, but I'm getting some more tupperware to keep them company.

I try to avoid saying that but, yeah. Some folks get really offended when you call the trigger on their $600-ish dollar M&P crappy.

I was mainly a revolver guy for years. The first auto I made peace with was the 1911.

My journey into tupperware was sort of happenstance. Had a co-worker selling a Glock 19 for $400 and I decided to give it a try. I learned not to hate the europellet with it.

Later on I got the Sigma because I couldn't resist the deal. It was so close to the Glock I decided to sell the Glock to fund a M1 Garand.

Then my search for a compact .45 led me to get a Taurus Millennium Pro on the recommendation of a friend. Nothing like a .45 Auto I can carry in a pocket

Then at the end of this Summer I added the XD-9. So I have 3 polymer frame guns out of about a dozen.

I've been wanting to do some IDPA at my local club, but my BHP doesn't fit well into the different shooting brackets they run on a regular basis there. I've been waiting on this year's Christmas present to myself... a CZ P01 that I finally purchased this week.....and since I live on the left coast, I had to buy online get it shipped in.......and only when it arrives at my local FFL will I be able to start the paperwork........and it'll still have to sit in Clownifornia 10-day cooling-off waiting-period gun-jail before I can take possession. And I had to pay about $100 more than a resident of a free state for the privilege. My only consolation is knowing that another handgun in the hands of a free citizen makes Dianne Feinstein cry.

113 I'm not sure what I think about this.

Apparently several (all?) of the US Military Base Commanders in Texas have formed and "informal group" to present a "united front" to Congress next time bases are reviewed for cuts.

114 I've worked in Health Care for most of my professional life.

Do you think insurance should not pay for ED treatments at all?  Even if it is side effect from cancer?  My customer was not a rapist or a criminal.  You can argue that government shouldn't be in the insurance business at all but they are.  Why shouldn't his insurance pay for a valid medical treatment for a legitimate medical issue?

115 My journey into tupperware was sort of happenstance. My journey was to go from practical to what I've always considered the pinnacle (1911). I got the M&P while still on the practical part of the path. I'll stuff it into the range bag every few months, but I'll rarely put more than a single magazine through it because of ammo cost and because it consistently shoots so well for me out of the holster that more practice would be counterproductive unless I started with games and needed to work on enduring consistency. Glocks don't point for me. I wanted the XD, but I got the M&P first because the XDs were sold out when I went looking for a plastic hi-cap.

116 Here's the transcript of the Newt interview: http://t.co/tGSHbvRP Here's a taste: GLENN: All right. Well, and I think this is where we fundamentally differ is it seems to me ‑‑ and let me just play the audio here ‑‑ that you are for the individual mandate for healthcare and you have been for quite some time. LetÂ’s play the audio. GINGRICH: I am for people, individuals, exactly like automobile insurance, individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance, and I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals on a sliding scale a government subsidy so it will ensure that everyone as individuals have health insurance. GLENN: Okay. ThatÂ’s 1993. Here is May 2011. GINGRICH: All of a sudden responsibility to help pay for healthcare. And I think that there are ways to do it that make most libertarians relatively happy. IÂ’ve said consistently we ought to have some requirement to either have health insurance or you post a bond or in some way you indicate you are going to be held accountable. VOICE: That is the individual mandate, is it not? GINGRICH: ItÂ’s a variation on it.

Huh? The Highpower fits into Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP). IDPA's second largest division.

I shoot its European cousin the CZ 75B sometimes. The Springfield XD also goes in ESP since its trigger is considered a single action.

1911's in 9MM also go in ESP.

You would need 4 mags for your Highpower. 3 for the match and an empty to insert to get past the mag safety and allow you to drop the hammer when done with a stage.

Newt isn't the only one with bad answers on health care.  The Weekly Standard has a partial transcript of Mitt's answers on Masscare from last weekend's debate.  It was devoid of specifics.  For a man who ran on being a health care expert last time around, and who promises to Repeal & Replace Obamacare, he sure doesn't seem capable of telling us what he'd have done differently, how Masscare failed, or what "Replace" means.

154 Rev. Perryman Sues Obama & Democratic Party

On September 11, 2011, Perryman brought together blacks from the West Coast and the East Coast to sign one of the most comprehensive legal briefs ever prepared for a racial discrimination lawsuit. The suit was to filed on September 12, 2011 in US District Court against President Barack Obama and the DNC. The plaintiffs, who refer to the defendants as the “Father of Racism,” allege that as an organization, the Democratic Party has consistently refused to apologize for the role they played in slavery, Jim Crow and for other subsequent racist practices from 1792 to 2011. Mrs. Frances P. Rice, the Chair of the National Black Republican Association is also a named plaintiff in the class action lawsuit.
The case cites the collective work of over 350 legal scholars and includes Congressional records, case law, research from our nation's top history professors, racist statements from Democratic elected officials, citations from the Democrat's National Platforms regarding their support of slavery, excepts of speeches from Senator Obama, individual testimonies from blacks who lived in the Jim Crow South and opinions from the NAACP.

157 Sorry, but ED is indeed an actual medical condition. Medicare has been paying for god only knows what, to treat ED since its inception. Excuse me for thinking DOCTORS should be making those decisions. PERIOD. By all means, root out all the fraud in the world, but I do not support anyone's lay opinion about what is or is not a "medical condition". With a federal budget near $4,000,000 million, I don't think we need to be taking medical decisions into the public forum over 0.0011% of the budget. That would be like a family making $150K and having someone off the street decide if their headache really necessitates that $1.75 bottle of Ibuprofen.

162 Indeed, CAC, I suppose now you will be telling all the women with breast cancer they should "take better care of themselves". The prime cause of ED is prostate cancer. No amount of "taking better care of yourself" is going to help. And again, when we've trimmed the budget by the $1.3 Trillion dollars needed to close the deficit, I'll start thinking we should take medical decisions out of the hands of doctors over $0.000047 trillion.

I'd support Newt based upon his time as speaker--he antagonized all of the Repblocrat hard-ons in DC and had the sense to get out of Dodge after 4 years once he realized he had overstayed his welcome (in organizational management studies, 4 to 5 years is pretty much the maximum tenure for meaningful leadership, which is why second terms are usually disasters).  Newt has a deep understanding of history and of the limitations of leadership, which is why he's backpedaling from the grand designs of conservatism.

Frankly, if he doesn't win, it's still a win because an Obama regime would result in a military insurrection within 2 years.

And, iirc, there are fatal heart conditions (infections) that are often linked to gum disease and/or dental work, aren't there?  So under the mantra of preventive care, shouldn't the insurance companies want to make sure everyone is covered for dental, at the very least?

It's also irritating that it is hard to get in to see an opthamologist now.  When I was a kid and even in early adulthood I always went to an opthamologist instead of an optometrist.  There's a history of glaucoma in my family and it was just what we did.  But I naively tried to get into see one several years ago after we'd relocated and I was told I couldn't.

46 the kinds of investments traditionally employed by retired persons and small savers, who wish to gain income without exposing their funds to great risk of capital loss—now fall considerably below the rate of inflation, and hence the real (or inflation-adjusted) yield on such investments is negative. That is, the nominal payoff is insufficient to offset the loss of purchasing power of the money invested.

So the elderly who manage to elude the death panels will do so without the benefit of any cash in their pockets.  The old rule of thumb was that you could withdraw 4% of your savings per year to live on, and your savings would last for your lifetime.  If your savings acct yield is negative relative to inflation, even if you leave your money in the bank and spend nothing, you lose.

I don't care if private insurance covers (or doesn't, for that matter) ED treatment.  I'm actually all for a la carte insurance, where you pick your specific coverages.  That said- that's private insurance.  It's voluntary.

Medicare covering something is completely different- that's coerced payment for your benefits.  You can be dang sure that I don't much care if you can't get it up anymore.

225 Canada is now moving over to plastic money. They just released the $100 bill and by the end of 2013 all their bills will be plastic. Their smallest denomination is $5. Their $1 bill is now a coin - the looney.

They still make pennies in Canada although there are proposals to get rid of it.

Sweden removed the 1 and 2 öre coins from circulation in 1972. New Zealand  removed  the 1 and 2 cent coins from circulation in 1990,  and five cent coins in 2006. Australia  eliminated its penny in 1993.

All kept the same prices and they used Swedish rounding., which is now used in quite a number of places. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_rounding

Five cent rounding is simplest. Go to the nearest nickel. Ten cent rounding can go both ways at 5 cents. In China merchants always truncate down. 50 cent and full denomination rounding tend to round up at half the value.

I think it is most common, when rounding, to  ignore pennies but round up 99 cents,

During the first week of the conference, attention honed in on China, and whether it was signaling new flexibility or reframing known positions.

After a private meeting with the Chinese, the Europeans walked away disappointed, said an EU delegate.

Despite public declarations it would participate in a legally binding agreement in the future, China unequivocally told the EU it would not accept binding targets for itself, said the delegate, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations were still in an early phase.

Earlier, China's top climate negotiator Xie Zenhua, in his first meeting with reporters, said China wanted to ensure all previous commitments by the industrial countries were met before entering into the next phase.

274 But it bothers me less then someone's choice like getting birth control or using condoms.

Okay, fine, I'll stipulate I'm bothered "less" by Medicare paying for ED treatment than I would be if they paid for birth control (which they might, by the way).  But that's like me being less bothered by Japan's motives in WWII than Germany's.  It doesn't matter if one bothers me "less" neither is okay.

I don't think I should have to pay for acne treatments, either.  I don't know anyone who would "choose" to have acne.

And if we're talking "choice" here, then we take most orthopedic medicine off the table, because it was your "choice" to play that sport, or go jogging, or whatever you did to tear your ACL or blow out your knee.  Those, on the other hand, are things I don't mind paying for.

That is largely because the US is paying for almost all of the world's pharmaceutical research, much as we pick up the tab for most of Europe's defense costs.

The nations with socialized medicine commonly tell drug companies, "Give it to us cheap or we just go ahead and make our own. Screw your patents." We're one of the few that doesn't do that, although between Bush and Obama we're moving in that direction.

If you want more of something, reward it. If you want less, punish it.

Apparently we want a lot less pharmaceutical R&D. Taking it underground might be a great way for the Mexican drug cartels to channel their immense cash reserves. You think your prescriptions are expensive now?

294 JM Browning spent most of his career in Belgium.  Not that I'd challenge you on this, but, goddamn it, I'm challenging you on this.

Over all the years I've been a shooter I've always seen the BHP called an American design even though it saw widespread use in Europe.

Hence I consider the CZ to be European since its design originated over there.

I suppose that technically makes all the poly frame, striker fired guns European since that concept originated there.

It's all a very convoluted history when you have things like Italy's Beretta setting up shop here so they can get the US contract to supply the M9.

Life is full of trade offs.  Nobody wants stress of course, but trading in the drinking and smoking for a few more years of potency sounds like a poor bargain.  After all, drinking and smoking are cheaper vices, and can provide pleasure almost any time.
