DOOM: Sun's gonna shine in my backdoor some day
— Monty

DOOOOM

Economic desperation is on the rise. Our government's policy of "ignore, delay, deny, lie, and obfuscate" isn't working. The welfare state is killing us -- that's becoming so obvious that even many liberals can't deny it.

Democrats, the NLRB, Boeing, and jobs. Even liberals are beginning to notice the stink.

No long-term case for equities? Even IÂ’m not that much of a bear (yet), but there is a case to be made. But Treasuries are worse, so if the choice is between a pig and a turd, IÂ’ll take the pig. (See this for why stocks might still be a better bet long-term than bonds.)

Bob “The Bear” Janjuah: Hope is for suckers! We’re doomed!

Brazil has been “the country of the future” for my entire lifetime, but they never quite seem to get there.

It wasnÂ’t just the Philly Fed. The Richmond Fed agrees that the economy really, really sucks.

Goldman Sachs CEO Blankfein lawyers up. Re the regulation problem: it wasnÂ’t that banks were under-regulated. ItÂ’s that the regulators werenÂ’t doing their jobs.

Alan Greenspan: The Euro is breaking down. Greenspan's credibility isn't what it used to be (what with him totally missing the call on the downturn and all), but it doesn't take a Maestro to see what's going down in Europe. Also, he says that gold is not in a bubble:

The major thrust in the demand for gold is not for jewelry. ItÂ’s not for anything other than an escape from what is perceived to be a fiat money system, paper money, that seems to be deteriorating.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

IÂ’m a fan of the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) as an indicator of world economic health, and this article may mean that fears of a recession may be overblown. I'm one of the people who think we're already in a recession, so this BDI number seems like pretty good news to me.

VDH: “Surreal Logic”.

‘The public finally elected a bad Congress to stop me from doing more of what I wanted and which did not work’ is not a rationale for a second term.

Central Falls, RI: The canary in the coal mine.

Brea, California, population 38,000 (give or take). Pension burden? $2963 for every man, woman, and child.

Barack Obama, supply-sider.

This doesn't exactly come as shocking news to me: many bankers do not take their own investment advice. They rarely look out for their clients' interests in the way that they should, but you can count on them to look after their own interests. If you want to know what a banker, broker, or investment adviser really thinks, ask him how he invests his own money.

California is doomed to the tune of $1 Trillion (and counting!).

UPDATE 1: Slower business spending spells trouble.

Economists expect [the durable-goods report from the Commerce Department] to rise about 0.5% in July. Any disappointment would point to a loss of momentum even before the debt-ceiling debacle and stock-market selloff. There have been other cautionary signs, including a slowdown in global demand. Exports peaked in April and have since slid by about 3%.

UPDATE 2: New Jersey, senior member of the LOTB. The Soprano state gets downgraded. Hey, even Chris Christie can't turn a turd into a tea-rose overnight.

UPDATE 3: "Washington needs to wake up to the jobs crisis." Somehow I doubt anything is going to happen until after the 2012 elections. That's bad because the situation is going to deteriorate, but the political parties are just too far apart -- it's going to take another election, and a voter mandate one way or the other, to break up the logjam.

6 Re the regulation problem: it wasnÂ’t that banks were under-regulated. ItÂ’s that the regulators werenÂ’t doing their jobs.

Worse: the regulators don't know how to do their jobs, and even the ones who do aren't capable of doing them in the time they're given.

The banking/financial industry was, at one time (it may have changed with HIPAA and ObamaCare to the Health Care industry) the most regulated sector in the country.  The minutia that was regulated was insane, and most of the regulators didn't even know all of the regulations (this from my dad, a former FDIC inspector).

The regulators who did know all of the regs, or at least all of the effective regs, still only had 1 - 2 weeks (depending on the size of the bank) to inspect each bank.  1 - 2 weeks might be fine for your local bank or even a moderate sized State bank, but for a bank the size of, say, Chase or BofA, there's just no way.

Add to that the over officiousness of all-too-many regulators, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Morning all!

First off, just to comment on the earlier Biden story: I loathe the VP almost as much as I loathe the SCOAMFOTUS.  That's actually quite a testament to how much I despise the SCOAMFOTUS, considering I find Biden's comments RE: China's one child policy utterly immoral and disgusting,

(Has anyone else noticed that "SCOAMFOTUS," when read aloud, sounds a lot like "Scum of the US?")

Also - to be filed under "Mother Nature thinks Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure" - when a magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes in the D.C. area and causes damage to an iconic national landmark:  SIGN.

Actually, they were doing the exact job they were hired to do: selectively enforce the laws so as to reward the state's friends (Blankfein et al) and punish its enemies (just about everyone else).

34 Monty, on your Update #3, are you suggesting some kind of active government intervention? 'Cause that's how I read that blurb.

Washington doesn't need to "wake up to the jobs crisis." Washington needs to wake up to the regulatory crisis (you know, the one they created and control). If they would do that, and actually fix the regulatory mess, the job crisis would, by-and-large, fix itself.

Posted by: Ken at August 24, 2011 09:14 AM (ZnE3s)

See, I happen to know that's not true. Oh, some higher ups in the Regulation Industry might have been some bad actors, but there is really only so much they can do. The average FDIC inspector, however, is very, very tough on banks.

But it would be nice, just ONCE, if one of the MSNBC White & Al Sharpton Talking Heads turned to the other and said, "But you know... we controlled the White House AND Congress by OVERWHELMING majorities for TWO YEARS... and all we did was destroy America's healthcare system . 42 Monty, on your Update #3, are you suggesting some kind of active government intervention? 'Cause that's how I read that blurb.

Nah, that's just the title of the linked piece. Myself, I'd prefer for the government to just close up shop entirely until 2012. Every time they do something, they make the situation worse.

But this is not to say that regulation and law-making can't have a positive impact. The role of the government in a free market economy (or at least what it should be) is to prepare the ground so that private-sector business can thrive and expand. The government's role is to enforce contracts, provide market transparency to investors, punish fraud, and protect the natural rights of the citizens who deal in the marketplace. When the government steps outside those boundaries, they tend to do more harm than good.

In a trend that continues to worsen, more Illinoisans found themselves unemployed in the month of July.

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July. The report also said IllinoisÂ’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

We're number one! We're number one! There's a chart with this story that shows right after that brain dead douche Gov. Quinn raised business and personal taxes the employment rate in Illinois took a nose dive. And on top of it the jagbag is passing a version of the Dream Act like California did

Today, my B&N email came and included an offer for a Color Nook for $224 with a B&N membership.  One of the benefits of a B&N membership is the ability to "try any title free for 14 days."  So, while they probably had the idea long ago (corporate inertia and all), it proves that someone else thinks my idea is a good one.

I'm not a goldbug, nor do I play one on TV, but my guess is either a minor correction (even with general growth, that's going to happen some), or the same phenomenon that has seen the DOW gain for no readily ascertainable reason.

Don't forget the lemonade stands they keep shutting down.  We're lucky, though.  Without such dedicated regulators, we'd all be dead.  Those little girls and their lemonade stands are known to have taken societies down.  It was a little Roman girl with her lemonade stand outside of the gates that let the Visigoths in (as she had to open the gates to get some more paper cups).  Alaric's men were very thirsty, and the greedy little capitalist chick was more worried about making some coin off the barbarians than protecting her beloved Rome.

That's what happens without proper regulations and enforcement.

121 I don't get the interest in the gold market since it's a joke if the currency fails what makes people think the gold they "own" will be available to them? I doubt the Feds or the people really holding the gold for you  will care what your  lil piece of paper says you "own" if the dollar fails they will keep it or take it and even if you have the the gold on hand  you better be better armed the the Michigan militia if you plan to keep it long because no dollar means no government to enforce the rules to give you the gold you "own".

The gold market is a scam driven up by moronic speculation which only works in the land of fairy tales where everyone is honorable and does what here supposed to in the end.

First off, a great many people keep their very own gold, or have a local storehouse keep it.  That makes it a lot easier to take possession when/if the SHTF.

Second, if it's only the currency that fails, gold will be worth a great deal- it will become defacto currency PDQ.  It's only if the government itself falls that gold is no longer worth much; even then gold will be the first currency (if History is anything to go by) for whatever new government arises.

147 I'm just following the DOOM aspect as my point was unless you have gold and guns in the same location and only you/loved ones have access to it you don't have any gold if everything goes to hell because based on what I've seen outside of japan there is little honor as has been violently demonstrated by all recent major disasters so who ever is storing it for you is might just not give it to you since DOOM has arrived.

148 LOL I thought the "High Summer" was "Hot as Hell Summer."

YMMV.

I swear, if I hear ONE more talking head on TV casually say that China is handling the economy better than America Because It Is a Communist-Run Totalitarian Central Planning Regime

I haven't even heard one talking head say that.  Is that local market, or the cables?  There's a reason I don't subscribe to those.

150 Don't count out Sarah Palin   LINK

Reads like wish-casting to me.

People have gotten to know Palin and they've rejected her.  A video added onto her book, bus tour, and movie is not going to change that.

The things that some of us like about Palin on a personal level, turn many people off.

And, for many of us who loved her as a VP choice who might be qualified to be President someday, the things she's done (or not done) since 2008 have not added to her readiness to be President now.

I would vote for Bachmann or Romney before I'd vote for Palin at this point.  I don't think the author has gauged her support amongst Republicans well at all and he's delusional if he thinks she'd win the general.

180 Yesterday I said years ago my horse sensed the earthquake (tremor) we had in upstate SC 15 minutes before it hit and ran wildly around his pasture.

From the WaPo:

The first warnings of the earthquake may have occurred at the National Zoo, where officials said some animals seemed to feel it coming before people did. The red ruffed lemurs began “alarm calling” a full 15 minutes before the quake hit, zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said. In the Great Ape House, Iris, an orangutan, let out a guttural holler 10 seconds before keepers felt the quake. The flamingos huddled together in the water seconds before people felt the rumbling. The rheas got excited. And the hooded mergansers — a kind of duck — dashed for the safety of the water.

Question: Are we eager for her to commit one way or another because we really believe that making a decision now is in the best interest of the party and country, or is our inclination based at least partly on wanting the uncertainty to be over?

I ask this because I sure as Hell want it over one way or another, preferable behind Perry.

Speaking of, I wonder why it hasn't shown itself today.
Also: The wife and I are thinking of a new pet.  We want a ferret, but that's not happening with two small (4 & 2) children.  We've already got a 10 year old mutt (actually, he may be 12 now... that makes me sad) who doesn't really like other dogs.

So, which would be better: a cat (the dog is terrified of cats) or a puppy (and hope that he's mellowed with age)?

I am more interested in the health of the party now, because I think the health of the party will determine the health of the country in 2012.

So the sooner you can build a groundswell behind one candidate, the better off we'll be.  She's going to move a lot of votes and she's an effective voice for conservatism writ large.  I'm OK with those votes being moved to Perry, but either way, she needs to start moving votes.

Maybe she has some grand master plan already and I can't see it because I am a moron.

I have the exact same issue.  I'd opt for the puppy since I can't see an older dog ripping a puppy to shreds.  He'd be cranky with the pup, but would move on.  I also think the older dog would help socialize the puppy.

Besides, if he's terrified of cats, it's not really fair to stress him out in his golden years.

Honestly?  I don't know.  Whatever your feelings about Palin, she draws a lot of media attention.  In a way, the uncertainty is a boon for the other candidates.  The "will she/won't she" whisper campaign uses up a lot of resources that would otherwise be turned full throttle on Perry, Romney, and Bachmann.

I want her to decide one way or the other by the end of October at the latest.  But I don't know if I want her to back another candidate right off the bat, again because the media spotlight would follow her, and thus follow her "chosen" candidate.

She doesn't seem to be wrecking polling, and no one seems to be hurt (yet) by association), so that leaves funding. Is she depriving anyone of funding? My guess is yes, to some extent.

209 Question: Are we eager for her to commit one way or another because we really believe that making a decision now is in the best interest of the party and country, or is our inclination based at least partly on wanting the uncertainty to be over?

Both for me. Probably the former more than the latter.

One, I am tired of having to deal with the Palin factor on every thread about polls or politics.  It's annoying to have people chime in with "what about Palin?" on polls of presidential candidates.  It turns into a huge waste of time to talk about the hypothetical candidate and her hypothetical support.  And, it's irritating to read the criticisms of ace (or whoever) if he posts one too many column about a declared candidate or if he fails to post something acknowledging her latest tweet.

But I also think it's better for the GOP cause for the big players (and she's really the last one at this point) to be hanging on the sidelines teasing about a run.  It distracts the voters, it makes folks delay in committing to actual candidates, and it pulls air time away from the declared candidates.  Yes, the voting is months away, but picking a candidate should be like buying a car, a relatively long process involving a test drive.  Until a politician is "candidate mode" they really don't have to start to lock into a solid position.

Look at Romney.  Who would predict he'd double-down on Masscare?  Well some did, but many didn't.  Many of us assumed that when he became a candidate he'd "refine" his position and move away from govt involvement in health care.  I read many columns wherein people were interpreting Romney's past statements on Masscare as leaving wiggle room for him to back away from it.  But he became a candidate and doubled down on it -- many times.  That's when I knew I had to abandon him as anything but a stop-gap candidate.

Perry is going through this process now.  Even though he's a very known quantity, having been in office for so long, he is now refining his positions on things.  If he moves too far away from what I think he is (based on his record), I may have to reconsider supporting him.

So I really disagree with people who champion Palin as a known quantity.  She's not.  She was a half-term governor of a remote state and, more importantly, she's never run for President.  I may think I know what her core values are, but I have no idea what he platform would be.  (Not that it would matter much for me because I think she's simply not prepared to be President right now.)

Problem solved.  You should be thanking them.

Blue Hen,

I guess both. I want it to be over and I'm worried(a little bit) that the longer the primary drags on, the more damaged our candidates will get.

Then again, it could have the exact opposite effect. A long drawn out primary could result in every skeleton being outed so that when the chosen candidate starts the general election there will be no surprises.

As for Palin, I'm simply done talking about her. I like her, but not as a political candidate anymore. Mainly for many of the reasons ace has mentions: Quitting as Governer and the fact that she polls terribly with every constituency that is needed to win a general election.

If she gets in the race, then fine, she is a legitimate topic of discussion, however until she does I don't think it helps anyone to bring her up in relation to the primaries. It always devolves into flame wars between Palin Loyalists and People who either don't like Palin at all or People who like Palin but have moved on for the reasons mentioned above.

In the current field, I think only Romney and Perry have a chance to win the generals.

I know Obama is unpopular and there is little to no chance that the economy recovers in 2012, but he shouldn't be underestimated. If there is one thing he is good at it is campaigning. We saw that in 2008. He may be a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure at all else, but his campaign machine was essentially a good Hollywood production.

Given the current makeup of the race, I'm backing Perry. However as I've said before. I will vote for the Republican candidate in 2012 regardless of whether it's Perry, Romney or even Ron Paul.

241 In 2008, I was a fanatic Palin supporter, because she had experience and wasn't tainted at the national level.

I predicted my enthusiasm would wane -- especially if she remained prominent on the national scene.  That's because some of the slime, no matter who you are, ends up sticking if you stay close to the 'big boys'.

My enthusiasm for Palin has indeed waned for those reasons.  I like Perry, because he's experienced (far more than Palin) and, again, hasn't had time to actually spend much time in the national level club.

I'm not sure if that makes me a traitor or not, and I really don't care much.
So, as far as Palin goes, I do like her, but resist I much.

Nope, but if I had to guess Romney is number one, Perry is number two and Paul is number three.

Ron Paul is always extremely successful with money bombs. He has a lot of appeal to people who normally eschew politics because they hate the two parties.

I think he just raised 6.25 million in one day last week

278 The country is so screwed, and the medicine we need to take is such a tough sell that my fapping fantasy is for the existing GOP field to broker a ticket right now and set themselves up as a policy shadow to snipe at Obama with solid, competent alternatives to every misstep he makes between now and next November. If people *really* don't like Monday-morning quarterbacks, then why in the hell are those call-in post-game shows so popular? Obama opened the door to this with his "Office of the President Elect" and his side's calls for President Bush to step down early. Any natural revulsion for back-seat driving would be dwarfed by revealing dick's abject incompetence.

279 271 And the Suttering Clusterfuck is down to 38% approval.

Posted by: The Media at August 24, 2011 11:01 AM (OWjjx)

And again I must say that I want to hunt down those 38% and smear them all with dodo guano.  Why dodo guano?  Because the effort it would take to FIND dodo guano in quantities sufficient to smear 38% of respondents would take a lot of effort, and thus prove how much I hate stupid people.

The SCOAMFOTUS should be at 0% approval, for heavens sake.  Even the far left wingnut, hippy, Gaia worshipping, make-love-not-war-and-abort-the-resulting-fetus moonbats are unhappy with him.

282 That Google+ Paul Krugman page was apparently a parody. He's whining about "identity theft" on his blog today.

Posted by: Johnny (John E.) at August 24, 2011 11:00 AM (nRTou)

He should take solace in all the work that's going to have to be done to set the record straight that it wasn't him.  Jobs for the folks.

What does he think stimulus is?  Identity theft IS stimulus.

How about Charlie Gibson?   Should we lay that to rest, too?

What's this?

Rachel "Ray" Maddow compares Mitt to Thruston Howell III.

John Kerry, the gigolo, is much much more like Mr. Howell than Mitt.

Posted by: Soothsayer at August 24, 2011 07:10 AM (sqkOB)

287 Okay, here's what you're going to need.

A cross-cut shredder
1 Large, metal garbage can (an old metal oil-drum works as well)
Some gasoline (probably not much)
Matches

Get all that together, and then we'll go on with the instructions.

The place I'm at keeps changing policies on information security and retention of paper. They also keep coming up with idiotic teambuilding stunts. Since there is a reservoir behind the place, I suggest that we combine them and stage viking funerals for old paperwork.

They didn't go for it, What a pity.

Posted by: Blue Hen at August 24, 2011 11:04 AM (6rX0K)

HAH!  I would gladly take up both suggestions if I could.  Good Lord, reading this stuff is painful.  I was in the dentist's chair for two hours yesterday, and even when the drill swept past the nerve (which is only ever partially numbed for me, I swear to God - novacaine thumbs its nose at me) it wasn't as painful as this.

In one of my past jobs we actually DID stage a ritual burning of one particularly onerous book of rules and regulations that had expired and was in the process of being updated.  It was very cathartic, I have to admit.

288 Rubio had to stop Nancy Reagan from falling on the floor. Many people are able to move on in these situations without losing an eyelash or mussing up a single one of their coiffured hair styles. Rubio is much more than that in my estimation.

I don't see any threads devolving into flamefests over those.

That's because the Paulbots don't cruise Blog Threads looking for refs to their leader.   They are only interested in stacking the deck on Polls.

The C4P crowd, however, descends on all threads that mention Sarah more than 5 times and MUST defend their annointed saint.

Either get a sense of humor or apply some discretion and ignore those who like to rile up the Palinistas.

I'm not going to stop giving her supporters shit until she stops trying to grab the spotlight.

298 mrp brought up Palin first with a link to a column by someone who thinks Palin can (will?) win the primary and general.  (Not that I think you were criticizing me... were you?)

As long as things don't get personal I don't care if other commenters post links to their preferred candidate(s).  I find the Perry-Norris type of posts amusing, for instance.  As for posting, I try to wait until the comments drift before posting a comment or link.  All subject to Ace's rules, of course.

The memo in the Seabees is: The first wife is for love, the second is for convenience, and the third (and lasting) is for money. Also, you have to have at least one divorce to be upwardly mobileÂ…  However, I am happily married to the first (practice?) wife. It can be done. And I wonÂ’t change anything. (Except, of course, I would like to be around more.)
