DOOM: The long grave already dug
— Monty

DOOOOM

The New Republic is stealing my gig! The outrage! The scandal! But no pictures of ugly, lazy, bored felines, so I still have that going for me. I also try to be less clueless in my economic editorializing. (The meat of the article? Apparently, the GOP is evil and wants everyone to starve in the streets or something. Stand well back lest you be struck by flying spittle. Judis is as innocent of economic theory -- and history -- as the weeds in my garden.) EDIT: I just noticed that in this whole screed, Judis never says a harsh word about the liberal saint FDR in spite of the fact that FDR was at least as much to blame (if not more so) for the depth and duration of the Depression. This isn't so much historical anmesia as willfully ignoring the obvious.

S&P downgrades Italy. This is further pressure on the Eurozone, and further evidence that the currency union is on the verge of collapsing in on itself. The more prosperous northern states (Germany especially) will not tolerate the Eurozone turning into a transfer-union.

Reading this piece from Victor Davis Hanson makes me think that California may be moving out of "boned" status and into "DOOMED" status. California cannot go on this way for much longer.

Also, you can add Florida to the list of LOTB members who have moved from “pending boning” status to “fully boned” status.

Greece and the crisis of the governing elite. With a bonus quote from Frederic Bastiat: "Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget that the state lives at the expense of everyone."

Teh Krugman: WEÂ’RE BLEEDING TO DEATH, YOU WINGNUTS!!! We need a money-poultice, stat! Transfusions of money! Money will cure all ills! (We can use Krugman's own metaphor against him: if the austerity advocates are like doctors who "bleed" their patients, then Krugman and his ilk are like the carnival-tent faith healer who promises that a mere laying-on of hands will cure everything from gout to paralysis.)

This is the equivalent of a gauntlet being thrown down, a challenge to his adversaries. Obama has declared an ideologcal war against half the country. He doesn’t intend for any of this nonsense to get passed into law; he knows full well he wouldn’t get it past his own party, much less the GOP. No, this is the opening move of the Obama 2012 campaign, Barack Obama in full leftist warrior mode. Obama seems to have convinced himself that his message of “huge tax increases now for tiny cuts later (maybe)” will resonante with voters. He will make no Clintonian move to the center because he doesn't have it in him. He has marinated in the leftist fever-swamps for his entire life; it's the only world he knows, and the only veiwpoint he understands.

Just a reminder to those who think that China will bail out the rest of the world: China has debt problems of its own.

CNBC's Jim Cramer is a perfect reverse barometer. Whatever he says, you can be sure the opposite is actually the case. So working from that model...we are all doomed.

What the--? I thought I smelled something! Man, I just bought these shoes! Gimme a stick so I can scrape it off, willya?

"Applying macroeconometric models to questions of fiscal policy is the equivalent of using pre-Copernican astronomy to launch a satellite." The "experts" fail yet again.

Dr. Doom jumps aboard the Keynesian stimulus train.

Bankrupt and bailed-out GMÂ’s UAW workers get...a $5000 signing bonus! Charlie Brown sez: All I got was a rock.

King Dollar shows some strength. We're still drawing the "safe haven" money, apparently.

We have a popular and growing brand, gentlemen! But I am not satisfied! No, we need to move upward, ever upward. So, hereÂ’s my plan: We will charge our customers half-again as much for the same service as before -- and in the teeth of the worst economy in generations! But thatÂ’s not all! Let us take the brand-name that made us famous, and change it to something stupid! Let us bifurcate our online presence and make it as difficult as possible for our existing customers to continue to use our service! It can't miss! You may sit back and bask in the heat of my brilliance, gentlemen, as we await the plaudits and praises of our customers and shareholders.

Ask the citizens what they want to do? Well, as a last resort. If lying, cheating, stealing, perfidy, obfuscation, delay, incompetence, cowardice, and stupidity have no effect, we can always fall back on the democratic process.

UPDATE 1: From Arthur comes this tip: The Greek Solyndra? And they're asking the Germans for the money? This seems...ill-advised. On many levels.

UPDATE 2: More and more people seem to be advocating this particular alternative to a Greek ejection from the Eurozone -- have the Germans and strong Northern economies leave instead. France would howl; one of France's goals in the Eurozone project was to shackle Germany to the weaker southern European nations and at the same time increase their own leverage over their Teutonic neighbors. If the Germans and others leave to form a "neue-Duetschemark", it would ruin all of France's plans. And it would throw the rest of the Eurozone into a major financial crisis -- though that will probably happen in any case.

UPDATE 3: Bammer: Everyone should pay their "fair share"! Except for that 47% who pay no federal tax at all. If you want a truly "fair" tax system, then everybody should have to pay something, if only to prove that government isn't free. (I pay about 30% of my yearly wage to the federal, state, and local Leviathan. Even God only asks for 10%.)

UPDATE 4: Keith Hennessey confirms -- Bammer's "balanced approach" is a giant pant-load.

But...even granting the premise that a decrease in government spending is recessionary (which I do not); these idiots don't have the intellectual capacity to follow their logic to the obvious endpoint, which is default.

I will happily accept a recession if I also get government spending under control.

5 So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the "Macroeconometrics" article is roughly 15,000 words to say "Macroeconometrics don't work.  The Government relies on macroeconometrics for their 'expertise.'  Ergo: all Government projections will be wrong- farther wrong than if they used more modern techniques."

Right?

So good, it should be required reading for all politicians:

"Live and let live," is at the heart of negative rights. But positive rights are based on, "Let's discuss what you need to do to change."

****************

The fundamental difference between a free society and a nanny state, is that in a free society, negative rights are maximized between the individual and the government, and the individual and other individuals. In a nanny state, positive rights are maximized between the individual and the government, and both positive and negative rights are maximized between the individual and other individuals.

Shorter:

In a free society, the government, as much as possible, leaves you the F alone, and you do the same to your neighbors.  In a nanny state, the Government makes sure you cook your broccoli properly and asks you to tell them if your neighbors aren't.

24 About the Florida thing: this pensions don't seem to be coming out of the state pension fund, which means that those cities are probably boned but not necessarily the entire state. A lot of the public services in the bigger cities withdrew from the state pension and benefits system a long time ago and are responsible for their own pension plans. For example, in NE Florida the JSO has their own pension and benefits plan that the taxpayers of Jacksonville cover but not the state. So their pensions and such keep getting bigger and you can retire after 20 years and get most of your benefits for the rest of your life and make a mint off the city. Right next door in Clay County, they are still in the state system and so they have been subject to all the cuts and additional contributions that Gov. Scott got through the legislature. They also don't make anything even close to the salaries that are paid out in Jacksonville. So it really depends on whether or not the city question is funding their pensions with city or state money.

25 I've probably purchased at least twenty new, and maybe half a dozen used GM's in my lifetime.

Yep.  My wife had a bad experience with Ford several years ago (their customer service, not her car- though she did hate that car, too) and so hates the idea of buying a Ford.  I, however, want a real truck as my next vehicle (I freaking hate my stupid little Sentra where I can't even see over a stupid Honda Aspire), and that basically leaves me with Ford or GM (the Asian trucks just don't ride like trucks, to me).  Those to options cut it down to Ford.

We have arguments about it from time to time.

I would argue that if the cities go belly-up, the State isn't too far behind.  It already sucks to visit Florida (in my experience, native Floridians are more rude than native New Yorkers)- why would someone put up with it if, in addition to rudeness, you had to deal with cities that are falling apart because they're having to pay massive pensions instead of paying for basic maintenance?  A lot of money would be lost there.  Then people would move, depressing property values- and, therefore, property taxes- and you start to get a death spiral.

39 Anytime public employee unions get a deal that includes overtime in retirement calculations you should stand by for a boning.

No private company that I know of counts overtime for a set retirement program. In fact, most large non-union companies have eliminated defined benefit retirement programs and replaced them with "cash balance" programs.

I was just pointing out that the issue is not one of crappy state government but crappy city government. As for natives, I'd have to ask what part of the state you visited? You're not going to run into any natives in Sputh Florida and there are very few of us in Central Florida. Most of the natives are in North Florida, where the culture is a lot more like South Georgia than the flamingo-beach stuff you see in the commercials. I live in Central Florida and am a native (born and raised in Jacksonville). The vast majority of the folks in this area are from the New England and New York/Jersey area and yes, they can be extremely frigging rude. My whole family is still in NE Florida and going to visit them is like night and day with the people.

I'm now glad the Republicans didn't take the Senate last year.  Because we're going to take it next year, along with the White House.  And part of the reason we're going to take the White House next year is that when Obama runs against the "do nothing Congress", we will point out that it's the Senate, controlled by his own party, that is refusing to do anything, and the reason why they're refusing to do anything is because he's even too extreme for them.

Posted by: phoenixgirl at September 20, 2011 05:53 AM (eOXTH)

63 I switched our plan to streaming only about six months or so ago.

How is that working out? I have a new cheap Blu-Ray player that has an internet connection that allows streaming video from Netflix, Blockbuster etc. From what I understand most people download the video to a Tivo device and watch it from there. I don't have a Tivo and would have to watch it as a live stream.

I am worried that my cable internet connection here does not support the needed bandwidth for that. Do you watch the video live or as download and do you get lockups when the bandwidth is slow?

76 Posted by: Vic at September 20, 2011 09:53 AM (M9Ie6) It's working out well for us. But we're odd in that we don't really care to see a good chunk of the movies coming out nowadays, so we're not really affected by the lack of new releases on the streaming side. Our streaming speeds are great. They don't have a download feature that I know of. We've got it set up to run on our XBox 360 via the wireless router. If the Internet speeds are bad, we do have slow downs but those are actually pretty rare. The vast majority of the time we get the high speed HD streaming.

I love Netflix, I really do.  This idiocy is making me seriously consider cancelling.  I use instant streaming all the time but it's primarily for old tv shows and the like.  It kind of has to be since basically none of the new release movies are available on instant stream.  Making it terribly inconvenient for me to use a service is going to make me switch to another service.  Or, you know, consider access through other methods.

79 You want an absurd example of how California is the State version of Uncle Sugar. The Workers Compensation department in CA is allowing former professional athletes from 20 to 30 tears ago file WC claims. And no these are not just CA based teams. If a player from Green Bay played a game in CA , one play, they allow jurisdiction in CA. These bogus claims are settling for between 50k and 125K. The legal logic that they used to overcome Statute of limitations and jurisdiction is shameful and is just another sign that CA is doomed.

85 I've tried running a CAT5 line from wireless laptop to CAT5 connection on the Blu-ray and it says it is connected but it doesn't play. So I have to find about 100 feet of CAT5 around the house (which I think I might have thrown out years ago) and run it through the walls like it's 1985 again.

I tried that with a printer and it doesn't work. I have a cable modem feeding a wi-fi router that also has 4 cat5 hard wire connections. I have one of those cat5 connections feeding the Blu-Ray or satellite box, which ever one I choose at the time.

The internet connections are fully capable because I have tested them but I haven't tried a movie yet. I am resisting paying for a movie and then finding that I don't have the bandwidth for it to work.

Still paying $6 per movie for PPV which is a damn rip off.

I would love that. Amazon gave me a "free" video on demand when I bought my last movie from them but you can only watch it on a computer. Need to be able to access it from the TV/Blu-Ray player.

94 Re: NetFlix:

This is the space into which BlockBuster needs to move- now- if they want to survive (though, on the other hand, if NetFlix implodes, they've got a little time).  And someone needs to talk to the various service providers about making it easier to connect.

For example, if I want to get NetFlix, I either have to stream to my computer and hook that up to my TV (if I want a good picture), or deal with it on my Computer.  This is because AT&T U-Verse won't let me deal with NetFlix directly (or wouldn't last time I checked).  My other option is to get an Xbox Live subscription (minimum $25.00 a month) and then also get the NetFlix subscription.

Given that I don't watch movies that much anyway, this enters the realm of "decreasing returns" for me.

97 Also, if you want a simple streaming box that requires little technical know-how to set up, I recommend a Roku box. I got mine from Amazon last year for $100 (HD-capable), and it works great. You can stream from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and a few other "channels" (like MLB On Demand). I stream from Amazon to my HDTV all the time: I've got the same content available on my cellphone, PC, and TV.

If you have that, then you have access to a number of streaming titles (mostly stuff that does not interest me). I *think* they have a thirty-day trial of Amazon Prime. It's $70-ish/year after that, but it gets you second-day shipping for free on most items, and you have to explicitly cancel it at the end of the trial or be billed.

My Blu-Ray has direct connect options on the opening screen when I turn it on for Netflix, Blockbuster, and several other movie rental services. You don't need to go through the computer for them.

What I like about Blockbuster video on demand is you only pay for the movie, no monthly subscription service like Netflix.

103 If you want a truly "fair" tax system, then everybody should have to pay something, if only to prove that government isn't free. (I pay about 30% of my yearly wage to the federal, state, and local Leviathan. Even God only asks for 10%.)

This is true.  And I'm getting really tired of the new "They do pay!  They pay sales tax!" bull crap talking-point.

Listen, idiots- there is not a national sales tax (yet), so sales taxes do nothing for IRS receipts.  Yes, if they happen to drive cars or take buses or taxis they do pay a national gasoline tax (if indirectly in the case of bus or taxi riders), but even that is often subsidized, so that really it's me- the productive tax-payer- who is really footing that bill.

You want "fair?"  Fine.  Let's do "Fair."  Flat tax rate, all income from any source (Salary, Capital Gains, whatever) taxed at the same rate, no deductions.  Suck it, Peggy Joseph and Warren Buffett.

But there are better options to view Netflix streaming on then XBox, for example if you have a PS3 or a Wii you can view it on those units for free, I think you might have to get a disc for the Wii version of the service from Netflix still though. I use my PS3 personally, the interface is much nicer then the 360 version.

I've tried running a CAT5 line from wireless laptop to CAT5 connection on the Blu-ray and it says it is connected but it doesn't play. So I have to find about 100 feet of CAT5 around the house (which I think I might have thrown out years ago) and run it through the walls like it's 1985 again.

Sounds good. If I were to build a new house (unlikely at my age) I would have every room wired for speaker wire, hi-def coax cable and cat5.

I won't wire for speakers anymore. The wireless speaker systems by Sony are great, and mobile. Port my HDTV through the stereo system and have surround sound without any wires except the cable and power cords behind the TV. Also Sony has matching wireless boom boxes we take into all the other rooms for music as needed. We've got 3 floors....and getting the sound we want isn't an issue. And it's a pretty inexpensive Sony system.

What needs to happen there is the small ranchers to get together and sue the EPA for corruption and unequal enforcement of the law and phony science.

If the claims by that industry group are correct the EPA wouldn't have a leg to stand on, but they need actual farmers who have been hit by the EPA to get standing.

165 (I pay about 30% of my yearly wage to the federal, state, and local Leviathan. Even God only asks for 10%.)

So do the people who pay "no" taxes. The federal/state/local distribution is different, but total taxation (per quintile) is within a couple percentage-of-income points, because state and local taxes in all but a few states and localities are intensely "regressive."

The exceptions that generate that couple percentage-point difference in total taxation between lower-income dudes and higher-income dudes are (mostly) people with average incomes who live in low-tax states. You know, the states with jobz and that aren't immediately DOOMed. Those people keep more of their money.

Coincidentally.

(Sub-federal conservative-ish economic policy generates the total-taxation gap there, is what I'm saying. So if you want that, you get this. If this pisses you off too much, be a damn Democrat. They screw poor people more.)

Or—

"I pay considerably more than 30%, because almost nothing I do is what the government incentivizes via tax policy, so how 'bout you pony up, you shiftless ingrate welfare-queen bought-off closet-libtard fuck?"

If you prefer.

The fact that a liberal democrat governor tried to take back all the cities redevelopment money should be proof that we are in deep shit. Oh, it's not.  Not in any meaningful fashion.  But the very last group of people who will ever be truly dependent upon the government are the small farmers and ranchers.  Basically, by definition, they're pretty self-sufficient.

When your goal is a cradle-to-grave nanny state (to be kind- complete subjugation of the people to be accurate), having a complete class of people who could survive on their own in perpetuity is a major flaw.

The big, Corporate Farms are less of a problem, because they are so dependent upon Government intervention.

176 state and local taxes in all but a few states and localities are intensely "regressive."

On the books, maybe, but in actuality...not so much. There are tons of loopholes, exceptions, subsidies, and other exceptions to the tax code at the state and local level (just like at the federal level). Example: sales taxes in many locales are not collected on food or clothing. Rents and housing are subsidized. Public transportation is subsidized. Licensing fees and other assessments are subject to "hardship" and interest-group exceptions.

196 So, my 2000 Ford Explorer spins a bearing.  Bummer. But everything else on the truck is great -- transmission, body, suspension, electrical. Just put new ball joints and tires on the thing and so I figure I'll just put an engine in it and it will be good to go for another 75k miles, maybe a 100k.

So I say to the mechanic, "how about a good used engine?"  Lots cheaper than a rebuilt or a re-manufactured one, right?

Wrong.

Cash for clunkers gutted the market for used engines, especially used Ford Explorer engines since that workhorse was one of the most popular clunkers to be turned in.  Turns out, that before putting all those nice serviceable Explorers in the shredder Bammy ordered the engines ruined by running sodium silicate, more commonly known as liquid glass, through them..

My mechanic, no economist or political junkie to be sure, tells me that the car-guy OBamster pretty much destroyed the market for good used engines making there be little difference between the priced of a used engine (if you can even find one) and a re-manufactured one.

Ca-ching and economic efficiency all around!

197 Used engines were never a good bargain. I had my daughter's engine replaced in her car after she ran it overheating until it locked up. This was before cash for clunkers.

It wound up in the end costing more than the car was worth. But it was too late to back out after they had pulled the old engine.

BTW, she then ran that one w/o oil and burned it up.
