The Dutch, along with the Germans and other “responsible” northerners, are the likely ones to have to make up for whatever countries like Greece don’t pay. “Yes, we resent it,” she says. I pose what seems a logical followup: “Do you want out of the euro?” She and the Belgian translator across from her look stunned and reply in unison: “Of course not!”

You will note that nowhere in Ritholtz's jeremiad is there a mention of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, two entities at Ground Zero of the financial meltdown -- this alone shows what a partisan hack Ritholtz really is.

I find a lot of this alarm at computerization and automation completely unpersuasive: the benefits of this kind of thing have outweighed the costs so far, and I have yet to see compelling evidence that this will change going forward.

As a software developer, I do, too.
The problem, really, is that none of the neo-Luddites (I like that term btw) were reasoned into the position they hold. They see a computer doing something that it used to take 100 guys to do, and they assume that just means those 100 guys are boned. They don't realize that, by depressing the costs associated with whatever line of business those 100 guys were in, everyone benefits, which, in turn, makes it more likely those 100 guys will find new, perhaps even better paying, jobs.

If you just stick it in the freezer, it takes quite a while to freeze. Longer freeze time = bigger ice crystals = worse texture when unfrozen.
Is it possible to get a flash freezer for your home?

Yeah, but you see that even to a lesser extent here. For a (very small) microcosm, look at all the comments about "The Establishment" foisting X, Y, or Z on "us."
Now, that's not entirely fair, because (depending on what X, Y, and Z are) the current "establishment" does have disproportionate power to dictate our choices- but since we're (well, okay, probably not the 'Rons) the ones who keep electing "the establishment," that's kind of our fault.

Try leaving it in the refrigerator to chill down first, and then put it in the freezer. If you want to do something fancier than that, you're probably looking at special equipment. Ya I remembered the subject but not the details, I got that wrong along with the definition of business profits(blushes, though the dis-tractors were subjective imo) and the other was where the phrase one governement one people. All in all the more esoteric stuff at least.

AllenG, Monty stole my suggestion (shakes wee tiny fist at Monty). I'm sure someone will be able to help. As an aside, I was watching a thing on the woman who created Spanx and she basically went around to all the garment manufacturers in NC to find someone to make them. The guy who finally did it said that he thought she was nuts but hey he needed the work. That worked out nicely for everyone involved.

I can't remember where I read it, but there was a comment that all inventions are made by lazy people. It sounds counterintuitive but it's true. Someone said oh hell no I'm not washing my clothes on rocks and figured out a better way.

One of the prime traits of a good software developer is laziness. I actually call it "transcendent laziness." It's a laziness that looks, superficially, like industry- but with the certain knowledge that if I do it the easiest way that is right, I can get it done faster AND no one will bother me about it later.

Why would that be wrong? If the Gov't takes in $1T and spends exactly $1T, then ON AVERAGE they take in exactly as much money per capita as they spend, per capita.
Of course, that assumes that all government spending is actually going toward the "public good," so I can see how you might object to that premise- but given that (unstated) premise, the answer was correct.
Well if Paterno cain show that he actually took steps and informed his security director about the incident, I think he cain survive the scandal.
I don't. I heard some of the specific charges (just the charges, not the details) and they nearly made me physically ill. If Joe knew that stuff was going on in his club-house and didn't inform the cops (when the Administration didn't do anything), he's morally culpable, too.

32/33. Missed the Lincoln-Douglas debate question.
Paterno: don't know if he is criminally reponsible but he is certainly morally culpable. I read today that the boy who was seen in the shower by the assistant in 2002 was victim #6 of 8. He apparently reported the incident but no one believed him. This means that two more boys were victimized after the assistant, Paterno, and the university failed in their duty. Disgusting.
Paterno informed Sandusky in 1998 or 1999 that he would not be succeeding Paterno in the head coaching job. This was around the time that Sandusky was being investigated in another case and charges were not filed. I want to know if this case had anything to do with Paterno's decision to pass over Sandusky and furthermore, when Paterno first learned about his proclivities. What did Paterno know and when did he know it?

I don't think anybody is suggesting that, except the hippie liberal types. I do want someone to say where the new jobs are going to be coming from. Especially jobs for the stupid. Let's face it - a pretty significant portion of Americans are not very smart, and they need work too. Anyone who's tried to hire anybody for an entry level position lately knows what I'm talking about. This is only going to get worse, because the schools are crap and the culture is in decline and the government PAYS the least successful people to have kids. We have a growing underclass and we're not doing a thing to discourage it.
Shall we put them all on welfare? Or just let them starve and thus reduce the waste labor? That probably will not end well in either case.
Employment is going down, and since high unemployment undermines the demand for goods and drives producers to become more and more efficient, I don't see what is going to reverse that cycle. The rich aren't going to go out and start buying up stuff to soak the extra idle capacity.
I don't think there's a way to move "beyond the employment paradigm," so the question is how to fit more people back into the arrangement without generating vast waste and gross injustice. I think it's a bigger challenge than some platitude about how "the free market will find a way."

Did you guys realize that in 1998 there was a formal investigation about Sandusky's behavior in the showers that led him to promising not to shower with young boys any longer? In what fantasy land must you be living to not recognize the guy had a problem and not put two and two together when there were subsequent incidents?
I like Joe as a football coach, and particularly as an old school mentor for college football, but he should step down.
And PSU definitely needs to axe that President.

Whenever I read anything about Italy I think about taking comparative gov't. I wound up in an independent study program for that and basically I was given a country a week and had to do a report on that country's system of governance. My report on Italy was basically yeah no idea what the hell they do. My prof laughed and said hey they don't either.
I'm thinking Berlusconi will comfort himself by having a sixsome on top of a pile of gold. He'll suffer though.

Penn State should receive the death penalty for this.

Yeah, I get that that's what they are trying to spin, but Paterno knew about the other problems with Sandusky and anything sexual involving a pre-pubescent boy is a criminal offense.
We (as a society) use words like "molestation" and "inappropriate" to try to soften these crimes because most of us are so repulsed by them. Heck, even ace's post yesterday had the incident softened up (he mixed up the sodomizing incident with the oral sex one -- not that it matters in my opinion they're equally horrifying). But Paterno knew this guy was a pervert and instead of phoning the police and handing the phone over to the 28 year old grad assistant who witnessed the rape, he acted like it was an HR matter internal to Penn State.
I'm actually amazed that the witness is not in trouble, but I guess they need his cooperation because they have not found the victim yet.

Rush came on and started his "open line friday" speel so I switched to "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show. I'm singing at the top of my lungs, drying my hair and the kid taps me on the back. This scares the hell out of me so I drop the hair dryer which knocks off the attachment which bounces around on the tile floor, I start screaming, I scare the kid who starts screaming. I finally stop, get the dryer off and the kid quiet and ask who it is.....he says Miller Baker wants your support. I said, "recording or real person" he said real person so I said hello. No one there. They had the sense to hang up. What a circus they must have heard.

I got that one wrong, too. And I suspected I would- this whole Keynesianism thing is relatively new- and there had been "panics" long before the Great Depression. The Federal Government really didn't do much then, though, and that destroys the idea that the New Deal was some great, sent-from-God salvation, so it gets left out of the history books.
At least, that's my theory, and it assuages my guilt at having missed that question, so I'll stick with it.

You would refrigerate them at home anyway. Indeed, that's an advantage, because it means you can keep them frozen at home, and then just get out one or two frozen slices (if you like) and just thaw those, instead of having to thaw the whole cheesecake. And, it would take less time to thaw, so you'd be able to enjoy it sooner.

I've done work in the AI field on and off for 20 years. People were yelling about AI taking over computer programming back in the early 90's ("expert systems" were going to make line-by-line coding unnecessary, don't you know). It didn't happen. AI may indeed take over a lot of the lower-level programming gumbo but a) it won't happen for at least a decade yet (probably longer), and b) it's only going to shift the responsibilities of programmers more to systems analysis and design rather than coding.

Well, I'm not sure about the original case against the former Defensive Coordinator. I'm not sure if that has moved to trial yet, or not (I suspect not). The thing is, though, that Joe P. has basically admitted (from what I heard) that he was told about some of the stuff, and his only defense was that he had done "all he was required to do."
Now, that's second or third hand, via the radio, from yesterday morning. So take it with the appropriate amounts of NaCl.

Ignoring/mocking for now is the best thing to do. An attack by a republican governor anywhere in the country would motivate the whole crowd and allow them to paint the whole movement as that dynamic.
At this point red state governors should:
-keep sending them bills for the permits, or refund tea party permit fees
-treat them like children playing TBall. "I love how hard they are trying" etc..
-Keep lodging complaints about safety - sanitation type stuff while offering to assist with it. (they will refuse, the governor will look the good guy while spotlighting the squalid conditions these people create)
We are so close to having this movement burn itself out in an embarrassing spectacle that can be studied for years by sociologists. If we can not take the bait for a few more weeks we should be in the clear. Its mostly dysfunctional embers with their ranks only stabilized by the influx of homeless and creeps.
I know I know some of you want to go in their swinging and put these rabid dogs down.

I'm not so sure about that. I think a lot of the analysts were a holdover from the dot com days when IT departments ballooned like crazy. They became little fiefdoms with layer upon layer of bureaucracy between the end-users and the people who did the real work (consultants like you and me).
Although I have always held down a full-time job, I would do pretty well on side-jobs when the economy was rolling. But I stayed away from the big corporations.. I could literally program a desktop solution for a user quicker than I could get halfway through writing specs for the shits in IT. So, I stayed with smaller companies where I could deal directly with the owner or managers.
My point though, is that those jobs won't come back because the money guys have seen they can get just as much out of IT without all the fluff positions. And that is not limited to IT, either. Businesses all across the country are learning to be leaner and meaner.
And with IT, all the Indian and Pakistani programmers for hire at $5 per hour long distance doesn't help much either.

Honestly, much of programming really has moved from the "Tell the computer how to do X" to "Tell the computer to do X." I don't think, short of the Singularity, that we'll get to a computer that can write its own code. On the other hand, we already have some really, really good CodeGen routines.

AI is largely a bust to date. Scarcely anything that guys like Minsky and Papert set out to create in the 60s has turned into anything real. Instead we just have better and better encapsulation of programmers and expert consultants input on how to deal with specific problem sets. Look at the state of the art in gaming, an area where there is much money to be made from AI. Everything is still box of rocks stupid NPCs or heavily scripted. The computer chess champions still mainly rely on brute force. They've just shifted from the level of throwing rocks to nuclear weapons but nothing like how a human player operates.

Years back, I was involved in a customer service response system, and the team came back and presented this automated AI starter system using a relational data base search system that directed the user through the process. After some calculations, I determined that an average human caller would get frustrated after about 120 seconds and this system simply generate more ill will.
I dumped the project and kept the humans around. We just provided them the fast keyword index lookup feature. It was the right choice.

But that is more the accumulation of useful code over decades and cheap storage combined with cheap processor cycles. My cheap phone can emulate my first computer while continuing to pull down mail without breaking a sweat. And it has enough storage space to contain every file from the hundreds of floppies I had then and not use up more than a few percent of the space.
Yet you won't find much of anything resembling thought in anything that phone does. Just a lot more code running a lot faster. The tools for programming it are leaps and bounds better than anything that existed twenty years ago but that was humans building on the work of previous humans.
There used to be the idea that if you could model the scant neural structure of a planarian worm and get that running on enough processors, the pseudo neuron would come together to form a brain comparable to a human. But no, you just end up with a really big worm.
