The China house of cards may be starting to collapse. I've been expecting it for a while now, but I suspect it will confound a lot of the China-boosters out there (Thomas Friedman, please come to the white courtesy phone).
What rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Global indebtedness, according to Zoakos, has actually increased by 17 percent since the beginning of 2008. Nations have enacted generous bailout and stimulus programs while growth has averaged an anemic 1.2 percent.
Why a Eurozone meltdown poses grave dangers for US Treasury market.
Cloudy, With a Chance of Armageddon.
What we are witnessing now is a very public demonstration of the limits of government led economic growth. Europe's debt crisis may have been accelerated by the US sub-prime debacle but it is a result of a welfare state that has morphed from social safety net into communal hammock. Simply papering over the losses will not solve the deeper issue of how to create growth with a government that consumes over half of GDP.
Our future population challenge: think Children of Men, not Harry HarrisonÂ’s Make Room! Make Room!.
Obama is engaged in another hallowed Democratic tradition he learned in Illinois: buying votes.
FYI: the Wolfson prize is £250,000, so if you’re looking for some extra cash....
What happens to an economy when it has essentially zero per capita GDP growth for a decade or more? Well, weÂ’re in the process of finding out, both here and in Europe.
And the next Euro domino to fall is...Italy! IÂ’m surprised. I thought Spain would fall over before Italy did. But then, the Med Eurozone countries are in a race to see who collapses first at this point.
I suspect that Greece will still win that race, by the way. In Greece, the bank-run may have commenced in earnest.
Should the Eurozone just let Greece go?
The problem with going down this route and then failing is that eurozone leaders will spend a lot of emotional, political and actual capital that they should be spending on preparing for a Greek default. Every euro they take out of taxpayer pockets now is one less available for financing a transition to default. Every bit of political strong-arming or payoff for votes now makes selling the steps needed for an orderly default that much harder. Every bit of trust and goodwill burned now is that much less available for a default solution.
Larry Summers: “Economic war criminal”? No, just an idiot. Our government is full of them.
Stagnationism: an even more-dismal dismal science.
California's economic suicide. I don't know that I'd call it a suicide: suicides intend to kill themselves. Californians are more like drug addicts -- they think they will escape the fate of most other addicts without having to give up their drug of choice. It will end badly, as most addictions do.
A flat tax is bad because...well, because shrinking the size of the government is just unthinkable.
The biggest downside is that by sharply reducing the rates collected from the highest earners, it would force the lower and middle classes to cover more of the cost of government than under the current system of graduated rates.
Remember how the Chevy Cruze was supposed to revitalize GM's commuter-car sector in the same way that the Volt was supposed to stake a claim in the hybrid/electric market? Well...things aren't looking so good for Government Motors or the Cruze. It's almost as if the government bailout of a failed auto-making firm was a huge mistake.
UPDATE 1: Your healthcare costs in retirement are apt to cost a lot more than you expected when you were still working. So plan and save accordingly.
UPDATE 2: A tale of two cities. (Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, to be precise.)
UPDATE 3: Pension DOOM...even for the Church.

Have you ever actually driven a Cruze?
I ended up with one as a rental and the lady at the counter handed me the keys to a "brand(!) new(!) Chevy(!) Cruze(!)" like I had just won the lottery.
When I got back that afternoon I asked her if there was some way she could make a notation in her computer to never give me a Cruze ever again.
You would have thought I killed her puppy by the look on her face.
Yes, Government Motors is about as competitive as you would think any government entity in the old Sovet Union would be.

That, and they have a built-in bias against the idea of shrinking government. Note they don't even address the possibility of shrinking government commensurate with any decrease in tax revenue- no, their assumption is that all that money is still going to come in, we're just going to ask the "lower and middle classes to cover more of the cost..."

I wonder, has anyone ever done any projections of where population would be today if not for the various 20th Century outbreaks of mass homicide: Two World Wars, assorted other wars, the acts of the Soviets, Chinese, and Cambodians, etc. Dozens of millions of people, except for that portion already past their child producing years, whose family lines were cut short.
Despite all of those losses, population grew in the same century at an unprecedented pace. Would those additional people have made little difference? I wonder about this because I feel the conditions are building up towards another era of such murderous madness.

From the article about Pittsburgh and Harrisburg: The first is to make your full pension payment each year and tie it to a reasonable rate of return.
Never going to happen. The political class, on both sides of the aisle, has no incentive at the moment to take seriously the on-coming economic destruction of the pension plans/Social Security crisis.
I am full of doom and despair about this and I am increasingly convinced that Europe will resort to form in dealing with its problems and that there will be massive generational stress in the US. I don't see any way out of it.

Morning, all! Nothing like a plate of hot, fresh DOOM first thing in the morning.
Speaking of idiots who don't understand the most basic economic principles, it looks like the Occupy Oakland proTEATers just won't go away, eh?
Riot police in Oakland dispersed hundreds of protesters with tear gas on Tuesday night as crowds tried to re-enter a plaza outside of City Hall that the authorities had cleared of an encampment earlier in the day.
...
By Wednesday morning in downtown Oakland, a dim cloud of gas still hung in the air over Frank Ogawa Plaza, according to images broadcast on CNN. A small number of police in riot gear stood by barricades around the plaza and a handful of protesters held signs nearby.
“It sounded like bombs,” said Joaquin Jutt, 24, a digital animator who was among the protesters on Tuesday night. “There was a stinging and burning in my throat, eyes and nostrils. My eyes burned like there was hot sauce in them.”
Hey Joaquin, you know what will make that burning go away?
Water.

“Outstanding chicken,” Obama said — and not necessarily the kind of food the first lady would object to.
In fact, the president told a few out-of-school things about Mrs. ObamaÂ’s diet.
“Here’s the secret,” Obama said. “Michelle, she’s done a great job with this healthy eating and let’s move and get exercise. But Michelle, as quiet as this is kept, she loves french fries. She loves pizza. She loves chicken.”

Despite the "DOOM", I am optimistic. America's best days are before it, beginning on 20 January 2013.
The maladministration of the SCOAMF will be over.
A Republican Congress will have more freedom of action to correct the deviations from the Constitution that have built up since Wilson.
The American Public has been chastened by reality and shown the result of socialism and Keynesianism and found it wanting.
The anti-growth agenda of the enronmental extremists has lost its steam.
The nation's capability to produce useable energy is pent up and will provide a bonanza of beneficial outcomes when released.
Likewise, businesses will thrive an environment that see less regulation and more stability.
Many of the problems are not caused by the government not doing enough, but by the things that it does. The solution is for the governemnt to not do those things.
When America is allowed to operate as it was designed it is a powerful, profuse instrument. When in the hands of economic retards and criminals such as the progressives are, its like having a rabid monkey in the cockpit of a F-16.

How can these two things possibly co-exist? From NBC Chicago:
"We don't want any violence here," said an Occupy (Chicago) protester named Storm (MWR - Why am I not surprised his/her name is "Storm?" Dirty hippy.). "It's not what we're about, it's not what we're here to do. We're looking for a nice, calm interaction."
Now contrast that with the closing sentence of the article:
After City Hall, protesters will stage a march around the Loop at 5 p.m. during rush hour.
Because NOTHING says "calm interaction" like a herd of filthy hippies getting in the way of traffic at rush hour in Chicago.

Right. Chastened by reality. Found the results of socialism and Keynesianism wanting. Maybe for 20 years. Tops.
People are the same today as they were yesterday, and they'll be the same tomorrow. The vast majority of Americans distrust politicians in general, but trust 'their' congressman. They're low information (as in, "Oh, its' election day? I wonder who's on the ballot?" low information) voters who vote for party, and not for a set of principles. They don't want to make choices that will inconvenience themselves. If the choices they do make help their posterity, so much the better, but it's not (for most of them) a priority.
But I'm a cynic.

Relative safe harbor for Euros to and Asians to park cash away from their respective governments and currency difficulties. If Monty is right re China, and I hold the same opinion, you should see a large flight of capital out of China into any respectable reserve currency (dollar, pound or franc). I think you are seeing Euro cash moving into US Stocks. Just my two cents. My real concern is if the Euro decide to return to national currencies then there would be an exodus of Euro cash heading back into Europe. Especially true of Germany. and Netherlands. Not so much Italy and France. Springtime for Hitler and Germany, winter for Italy and France.

Yeah, there is no hope. There are no Republicans on county council and all the main positions like Treasurer, Country exec, etc are held by union owned democrats.
Fortunately for us in Allegheny county, the city and county finances are separate.
The surrounding areas of Allegheny county are fairly republican.
They keep trying to merge the cities finances under the claim that it will consolidate services and save money, we claim that they should go fuck themselves.
So far, we've managed to keep the finances separate.

So are you saying the Hillary is not the smartest woman on the planet? So, dumping someone in the middle of the ocean is decorous?

93 The left (media, Democrats, unions) want to destroy every candidate. They are staying away from Mittens until after the primaries.

I think the current machine (Gov. MSM) believes that Mitt will Neutralize the Tea Party. Right now he just seems to be ignoring it.
Willard has ignored it at his own peril. He has his 25% RINO box perfectly built. Teh only problem is the 2010 election was all TEA party, and will decide this election as well. Too bad for Willard.

If Mittens gets the nod, the pull-through candidates for the Senate/House have to be from Tea Partiers. Organize locally folks...

The most compelling reason to support Perry IMO is that the left wants to destroy him.
Posted by: Hussein the Plumber at October 26, 2011 09:59 AM (jx2j9)
And the establishment right, I might add. Perry is getting teh Fred and Sarah treatment full on. Also, beware of link above. It goes to Huff and Puff.

So, is Mittens a conservative who pretended to be a liberal to get elected in Massachusetts? Or is he a liberal pretending to be a conservative to get nominated by the Republican Party?
We really don't know, do we?

Coffee usually helps though.
The stock market seems very volatile, with 2-3 hundred point swings common every day. The invisible herd doesn't seem to know which way to go. Moo.

So, I guess Perry intends to turn ON the address check for his campaign contribution website.

I thought it worked much better for me with the address check "unexpectedly" left in the OFF position!

>>Tell me folks from MA, how can anyone this stupid get elected in MA?
Mr. Y-not just returned from a business trip in Boston (recall, we lived there for about two and a half years during the first Gulf War so we know it pretty well). He reported a very odd phenomenon: lots of regular folks (cabbies, hotel and restaurant employees, passersby) were openly bitching about Obama. That included ethnic types (although he didn't specify if he meant immigrants or African Americans). I guess they blame him for the downturn.
Now he was traveling with LDS folks, and visiting primarily with them, so there was definitely some pro-Romney support in that group (business types, wealthy folks), but he said amongst the regular folks there was a sense that Romney was the devil they knew. They didn't like him, but felt he'd be better than Obama.
He didn't hear the other candidates discussed. I hope Perry gets a lot of media time to sell his economic plan. I'm glad he did very well on O'Reilly (although I wish less time was spent by BO'R trying to get Perry to say something nasty about Mitt) because, although we loathe him, he has a big audience.
But Romney (and Obama) having the media and chattering classes on his side is undoubtedly an advantage. It leaves virtually no oxygen left for the other candidates. And, of course, he is rarely asked any sort of difficult question.
I will risk the teasing of the Palin supporters and admit that I think it would be good to have her endorse Perry at this point. He needs the boost. It could hurt him in the general, but he needs some game-changers on media coverage.

Re Rick's ad:
Wow - I watched Perry's ad. I love it!
He looks terrific, he speaks clearly, the message is simple. Love it.
Very rarely do we get to see the candidates in this short ads. Usually we are "treated" to melodramatic voice overs and clips from media reports. I loved the visuals and script of this ad. Even the music was good.

It's been simply awful for me. I've been unemployed for three years now! It really slowed progress on my mansion in California.
Vote for me! I feel the pain of the little people!

Edison is already warning us in commercials that "officials" have the right to call a Flex Alert, or energy reduction, when they feel energy use is too high. I can't wait to see what happens when liberals get their air conditioning turned off by The Man the next 100-degree day.
We are doomed.

American voters should take notice. IMF bails-out a bankrupted nation, and all productivity flees that nation, legally or illegally. Campaign funding makes certain that the politician who will enforce a repatriation of all future export corporate profits (only ones making any profit?) is the landslide victor in election. Not that repatriated export corporate profits will be invested anywhere except in providing IMF (or the Federal Reserve) with bonuses.

ArgentinaÂ’s recovery
Cristina Fernández will likely secure a second presidential term, largely due to the country’s economic recovery after a $100bn debt default

Fernández wins re-election in Argentina
ArgentinaÂ’s populist president cruised to a landslide election victory on the back of a booming economy to secure a new four-year term
Bloomberg News - Oct-26
Argentina ordered oil, gas and mining companies such as Xstrata Plc to repatriate all future export revenue as the government struggles to stem accelerating capital flight from South AmericaÂ’s second-biggest economy.
//Capital Flight
The Argentine economic crisis of 2001 was in part the result of massive capital flight, induced by fears that Argentina would default on its external debt (the situation was made worse by the fact that Argentina had an artificially low fixed exchange rate and was dependent on large levels of reserve currency). This was also seen in Venezuela in the early 1980s with one year's total export income leaving through illegal capital flight. In the last quarter of the 20th century, capital flight was observed from countries that offer low or negative real interest rate (like Russia and Argentina) to countries that offer higher real interest rate (like the People's Republic of China). A 2006 article in The Washington Post gave several examples of private capital leaving France in response to the country's wealth tax. The article also stated, "Eric Pinchet, author of a French tax guide, estimates the wealth tax earns the government about $2.6 billion a year but has cost the country more than $125 billion in capital flight since 1998."
[Obama and Democrats stay stuck on stupid demanding another wealth tax in order to keep squandering US tax funds on their own personal/political gratifications.]
