KABOOM! Looks like Uncle Sugar decided to bail Europe out after all. Hey, what's a trillion or so between friends? It's not like we're broke or anything....
The worst kind of “stuck” is when you can’t go forward and you can’t go back and no one can reach you. That’s where the Eurozone is right now.
Europeans find “unity in inanity”. Hey, I’m sympathetic to ignoring Timmah -- believe me, I understand. But still...don’t ignore good advice, even when it comes from a jerk. Separate the message from the messenger.
To stave off disaster, the Greeks will have to learn to be completely different people, culturally. Greeks have not been known for fiscal prudence since...well, the memory of man does not run that far. I suspect that in the end they will be unable to completely transform themselves in the way the rest of the Eurozone wants them to. The Greeks are, well, Greek, and that culture will not change in the span of a year or two. Even if the Greeks wished to transform themselves, it would be a project of decades; and it is not clear that the people of that bankrupt nation are even willing to make the change.
This is why the PIIGS are boned. You can repeat this same story, with small variations, tens of thousands of times.
Europe 2011 may be worse than America 2008.
$1.5 Trillion in new taxes now, $3 Trillion in cuts later. Pinkie swear.
The accounting on ObamaCare is even more screwed up than you thought it was. It's certainly lived down to my expectations: I expected it to be a fiscal disaster, and so it proved. Pass it to find out what's in it!
California Democrats donÂ’t just suck at looking after taxpayer money. They suck at looking after their own money as well. So itÂ’s not venality so much as simple ineptitude.
The Empire Manufacturing Survey brings on the suck.
European banks are hiding a lot of crap off-balance-sheet. This is one of the big fears in the Eurozone -- that the already-undercapitalized banks are in even worse shape than thought due to huge amounts of hidden debt and other obligations. (EDIT: Recall that this is the sort of thing that took down Enron.)
Universal social programs vs. cost-benefit analysis. If there is no cost-effective way to fund programs for the poor, should we still try to do it for ethical reasons?
American Jews finally realizing that ObamaÂ’s just not that into them. The alien being Waxulon opines:
There are Jews who are trending toward the Republican Party, some of it because of their misunderstanding of ObamaÂ’s policies in the Middle East, and some of it, quite frankly, for economic reasons. They feel they want to protect their wealth, which is why a lot of well-off voters vote for Republicans. Those Jooos and their money. Also: TEH RACISM!!!
The future of jobs. The employment model won’t be as stable as in the half century after World War II, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing; the “Detroit model” had a lot of defects and didn’t promote much in the way of either R&D or “creative destruction” in the Schumpeterian sense. We must learn to innovate better and move faster to compete globally. The future workplace needn’t be *worse* than what we have now -- in fact it may be much better in many ways -- but the change will be a wrenching one for many people.
Fraud in unemployment programs? The hell you say! Our governmental bodies have proven themselves honest and fair caretakers of our public funds, and I for one will not stand here and see our public servants so basely slandered!
I just wouldn't be me if I didn't take the opportunity to bash on Social Security. It's like getting a fat pitch with the bases loaded: if the pitcher's gonna serve it up, I'm gonna swing at it. The evils of Social Security.
Someone always has to pay the bill, folks. Always. There ain’t no such thing as “free”.
Even perma-bull Kudlow is sensing a disturbance in the Force.
The recession call is not conclusive. I'm the first to admit it. And my optimistic instincts rebel against the downturn scenario. But facts are facts. They must be reported. And the numbers aren't good.
Do adult job-training programs work? It depends on the individual to a great extent, but the track-record of government-sponsored jobs-training programs is not good. ItÂ’s also a fact that as a person ages, they donÂ’t assimilate or retain new information as well as they did when they were younger. ItÂ’s essential to keep your job-skills up-to-date, but training programs are not a panacea: you canÂ’t make up for a lack of skills in an eight or ten-week program.
End the FedÂ’s dual mandate? Better yet, just end the Fed entirely. ItÂ’s done far more harm than good over the years.
Remember those “bumfights” videos that were all the rage some years back? Well, it's like that, only with Russian billionaires.
UPDATE 1: Here's the thing about inflation: it's never a problem, until all of a sudden it is. And it is devilishly hard to get rid of once established.
UPDATE 2: Take heart, you poor overburdened peasants! His Majesty the King has a plan to realize $4 Trillion in cuts...and it'll only take 120 years! A mere eyeblink compared to the long ages of the cosmos, really. (EDIT: This was an error in the original story which has since been scrubbed corrected.)

There is a cost-effective way to fund programs for the poor. It's called "Private Charity," and it worked relatively well for decades (at least) before our all beneficent Government decided they could do better.
The big food-bank in our area can feed a family of 4 for a week for about $16.00. Real costs, obviously, are higher than that, but since they're in the form of donations to a charity, the people providing them have (in theory, at least) decided that helping that charity is worth more to them than the $50.00 or so they gave.

Heinlein tried to get that across in 1966 with his famous TANSTAAFL from The Moon Is A Harsh Mistriss. He had learned his lesson from his socialist days.
But some people never learn.

That's true to an extent, but that doesn't really kick in until your 60's or later, if you keep learning the entire time. Mostly, the reason "adult job training" doesn't work (most of the time) is that a higher percentage of people in those programs are not the kind of people (self-motivated, disciplined, and humble) who are going to maintain regular employment and move up the monetary-success ladder.

I didn't get to watch the game (my wife won't allow any game with the Eagles to be shown in my house- and I more or less agree), but I was very, very happy to hear that the Eagles lost. Less happy to hear about Vick's injury- just because I never actually wish harm on anybody- even an evil scum-sucker like Michael Vick.

No, no I didn't. I knew he hadn't "changed" a bit when he mentioned he thought he should get a rescue dog last year. I think he reduces the prestige (what little there is) of the Eagles as an organization, and that they were willing to hire him speaks great volumes about their priorities.

Either, they're only talking about W-2 Income, in which case "Millionaires" (as defined as "people like Warren Buffett") won't be touched- because their "income" is all Capital Gains. In which case: lie. Or they're going to jack the capital gains tax rate back up to around 50%. In which case- stupid.
I would love Jake Tapper (because he seems to be the only one with enough guts to ask such question) to ask Circus Monkey Carney about that in today's press briefing.

This little snippet from the article Vic linked in the other thread is a perfect example of what has to end. If solar is so great, at Peter Lynch argues, it's development can be fostered by the market. And, if it takes a variety of government interventions to survive, including encouraging forcing people to use it, then it's really not worth our time, is it?
What's wrong with letting China sink billions into this boondoggle and then coming in later and building on all of their success? Who says we have to be first in the water?

If I understand correctly, it has more to do with what defines a "liability" to a financial institution. Remember that your checking account goes on the negative side of the ledger for your bank- that loan you have goes on the positive side.
So, what happens, is different types of accounts (largely trust type accounts and a few others) that operate so differently from normal deposit accounts don't get counted. Part of the collapse of 2008 came from an FDIC rule change that required certain loans (which, previously, had been assets) to be re-classified as liabilities.

Posted by: Sean Bannion at September 19, 2011 05:40 AM (sbV1u)
That's actually been SOP for quite some time. The reason, of course, is to hide what real inflation is. Their rationalization, however, is that those are "fluctuate independently" (which is a crock) and they have to be removed from the "core" inflation number to get a more consistent feel for inflation.
I believe they are also supposed to publish the number with Gas and Food included, but it's not called "core" inflation, and is often not reported by the media outlets.
Also, because it's been a while: Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.

That goes back to the "cultural change" thing I mentioned in my post. The Greeks are being asked to change their entire culture, and they're not going to do it -- even if they wanted to, there's no time, and they don't want to anyway. The Greeks are who they are. 10% of the entire population works directly for the government; another 15% or so depend on government payments and pensions for the bulk of their income. That's a quarter of the entire population. The private sector of the Greek economy (what little there is of it) simply cannot make up for that kind of displacement.
That's why this "austerity" push by the Greek government is doomed. The Greeks will not tolerate it. It will end up in a coup or a civil war if they push too hard and for too long.
And anyway, this whole mess isn't about the Greeks, really. It's about the rest of Europe. If Greece defaults and leaves the Euro, what's to prevent Portugal and Ireland from doing the same? In fact, why would the Euro hold together as a monetary union at all? That's what's scaring the piss out of the Eurocrats right now: Greece is just the cotter-pin holding the entire rickety contraption together. When it breaks, the whole thing is going to fall apart.

Okay, I have to ask: I know that such a collapse would be terrible- for a little while. Wouldn't it, though, actually be a good thing in the mid-to-long run? It would re-introduce "monetary competition" (for lack of a better term) where each country would be making monetary policy which is theoretically in their own best interest, and not have some bureaucrat hacks trying to do it for them.

Okay that makes some sense, sort of, in an accounting world kind of way. I think what throws me about this is referring to these as "off book" liabilities. Obviously these liabilities are accounted for somewhere, at least one would hope that an institution has some vague idea of it's true financial situation. I know that GAAP does count things differently than I would but still. It has to show up somewhere.
Posted by: alexthechick at September 19, 2011 05:50 AM (VtjlW)
This is Europe. Historically, they have a habit of going to war with each other over "trifles" like this. I don't think it would come to that in the event of a Eurozone break-up, but it would almost certainly drive the world in a real, sure-enough Depression. Europe is a major market for China, and if Europe's demand falls off, China's export-driven economy goes right along with it (America's reduced demand won't make up the difference).
Remember that the strongest nation in a Eurozone breakup would be a reunified Germany. There are long memories in Europe of a strong and empowered German state, and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see e.g. France start to hedge against German supremacy via a new arms race. If a new populist government takes control in Germany, that would only exacerbate the fears of the other nations. (Remember: for France, one of the main goals of getting Germany into the Eurozone was to shackle them to the other, weaker nations.)
I've always thought that the Eurozone was a horrible idea: "Europe" is not a nation. It never was, and it never will be. But the breakup of the Eurozone (if indeed that's what we're seeing) is going to be traumatic and painful for everybody -- including us.

The whole point of the EU was to centralize power, diminish the nation states, and provide a convenient wealth transfer mechanism for the current version of European "pseudo-royalty bureaucrats. I'm not sure about the specifics (I know what I do know from talking to my dad the bank auditor). My understanding though is that (most of the time) when you hear about liabilities being "off the books" or "unfunded" in the financial institution world, they're talking about cash-on-hand: the ability to pay out, in actual cash, if everyone starts pulling out of a bank.
That money is (or should be, at least) accounted for, it just doesn't count against the "liabilities" they have to report vs. liquidity.

You can't have a 35 hour work week, welfare state, and an arms race. And most of the French Foreign Legion is German nowadays.
I think the trend in Germany will be toward isolationism vs. the rest of Europe. They may attack France however. The wine is very good.

Memorization is actually a fairly small part of learning, now. At least, in software development, every day is "an open-book test." What you tend to need to learn is the appropriate thought-patterns for the appropriate problems (something most of the older generation tend to pick up faster, in my experience) and where to go to look for information you haven't memorized, yet.
Maybe it's just being in an industry that constantly changes (if you take a week off, you've got a lot of catching-up to do), but I find the older generation every bit as able to learn as us "youngsters."

I suggest a similar course of action for economists. We could rename the Grand Canyon the Krugman Pit and throw the economist pieces into there. Sure, it would fill up pretty fast from all of the economists who don't have a clue what they are talking about but it would last us ten years or so.

Friday's Wall Street Journal:
Â…The new factory built with Department of Energy funds foisted fixed costs on a company already struggling through an industry shake-out, they say. What's more, the debt paradoxically made raising more money difficult. Once the government demanded priority in the event of failure, private investors were less likely to prop up the company.
One Solyndra investor said that, in retrospect, "the worst thing that happened to Solyndra was the loan."
Â… The company, founded in 2005, was blessed early on with influential backers. They would ultimately pump nearly $1 billion into the company. [Almost all of that is likely gone, making Solyndra one of the biggest venture-capital busts in history.] http://tinyurl.com/3h6gh7p

With only 960 residents and a handful of roads, this tiny hilltop village in the arid, sulfurous hills of southern Sicily does not appear to have major traffic problems. But that does not prevent it from having one full-time traffic officer — and eight auxiliaries.
Especially in the poorer Italian south, many say a jobs-for-votes system has persisted.
The auxiliaries, who earn a respectable 800 euros a month, or $1,100, to work 20 hours a week, are among about 64 Comitini residents employed by the town, the product of an entrenched jobs-for-votes system pervasive in Italian politics at all levels.
“Jobs like these have kept this city alive,” said Caterina Valenti, 41, an auxiliary in a neat blue uniform as she sat recently with two colleagues, all on duty, drinking coffee in the town’s bar on a hot afternoon. “You see, here we are at the bar, we support the economy this way.”

Its.....interesting.....that we're not hearing Obama bashing those evil Corp Jet Owners anymore.
Warren Buffett owns NetJets, which sells fractional shares of corp jets. It buys brand new ones by purchasing production serial numbers, at a bulk discount, from the manufacturers.....then sells fractional shares of each one, plus the management, maintenance and pilot service for those shares.
Buffett would get hit badly with any sort of O-tax on corp jets.
But now that Buffett is letting himself get used by Obama for this 'millionaires tax' there doesn't seem to be anymore talk about a tax on Corp Jets.
The funny thing is......those fractional jet ownership companies sprouted up in the first place as a way to avoid the Fed tax on charter, which is high. So they came up with a way to do charters by selling 'ownership' shares instead. Same basic thing though.
Buffett is such a crusty old hypocrite.
Oh, and he will make millions off of selling financial products to millionaires to avoid the new 'millionaires tax'.....if it is passed.

The problem is not one of knowledge, but one of Character. They know they're expected to be there on time, expected to be dressed neatly and have reasonably good hygiene, not take excessive time off, etc. They. Just. Don't. Care.
They think the job is owed to them, and they believe that any requirement that is inconvenient (such as a modified work schedule or some-such) is "unfair." They also know that, if they're fired, they'll mostly likely get unemployment- because it's typically easier for companies just to okay the UE than to fight it. So there is no incentive to stay on the job longer than the minimum time necessary to get Unemployment benefits.

Deflation is currently eating up most of the money printing, but the govenment won't stop printing money until it's too late. Then, you'll have too much money chasing too few goods as people stop trusting the currency and start looking for 'deals' and 'safe' investments, aka, hard assets.

I doubt this. The deficencies of the Bundeswehr were on exhibit in Afghanistan, and the population of the Bundesrepublik is cratering, despite official measures to reverse the falling birth rate. Any talk of an arms race would likely be a sidshow designed to deflecet attnetion away from domestic problems (ex: Argentina and the Falklands)

In '89, after peace broke out all over when the wall came down, I lost my job manufacturing engines of distruction. Manufacturing in NJ sucked, so I needed to get into something else.
On my own, I bought books, bought routers and switches from Ebay, and completely retrained myself (and certified) in Cisco networking. I scored a low end job in IT and kept learning and self-training. Not more than a year and a half from scoring that $8/hour job, I was making in excess of 100K in the industry...and kept on learning and certifying. In my 50's.
Since then, I've been out of work twice (both times when my company got bought out)...but never more than a couple of weeks. I even had my own business for 8 years teaching Cisco stuff.

I gave it up about 6 years ago cuz the first thing that goes when a company cuts back is the training budget. I got caught in the mini-resession after 9-11. I was still making money, but was working twice as hard for 4 times less the money I was getting at the beginning.

I think Mutt Romney is a baloney sandwich. But he'll get my vote if he's nominated.
Still, he's a big-government liberal Republican, and that should -- in theory -- be against everything Flake allegedly believes. That suggests that he got some kind of political payoff for jumping into Mutt's kennel.

I want to support Perry, but he has only been running nationally for a few weeks, and I have to see how he sells himself. Romney has been running since...2006/07? He's heard how his lines sound to people outside his state.

That indicates that you think that Flake's conservatism is as pure as the driven snow (hyperbole- but it gets the point across) and that anyone questioning those who would endorse Romney are the ones on whom it "reflects poorly."
I was pointing out that exactly the opposite is true: Anyone who endorses Romney has to answer at least those three charges to explain why he/she thinks that Romney is conservative enough.
I will never defend Perry on immigration (I'll point out he's not quite as bad as some of his critics would like to believe, but I'll never claim he's some hard-border guy). I'll readily admit TTC and Gardisil were bad ideas (again, not as bad as his opponents would like you to believe, though).
When has any Romney supporter said- flat out "I really wish Romney would not have signed RomneyCare into law, or at least would stop defending it as some massive success?" Or when have they ever said, "Really, Mitt? I'm a supporter, here, but you make it so much harder when you come out for things like Ethanol Subsidies, or you make Dem-lite Medi-Scare attacks."

also on the Flake endorisng Romney cause he's a fellow mormon, sorry it's the most likely truth. Fact is when you can identify with a candidate your willing to put some things aside. Yes conservatives should be above that but it's human instinct. I'm latino, and if someone's foaming at the mouth on the dangers of hispanics as oppose to someone explaining b/w legal and illegal immigration i'll be more willing to listen to the guy not putting me in the boat of all illegal immigrants. If a guy is atheist it might turn me off a little as opposed to his foe being a like-minded christian like me. Not saying it's 100% of the reasoning for Flake but religion can be a part that played into his decision. THAT said, Flake is a great conservative and all that but he got it wrong on this one.

Someone started a thread called "Anne Coulter vs. single moms" and it degenerated into "only Republicans use hate speech and show us where liberals say hateful things."
For some reason I cannot post on that board from my computer at work so was wondering if anyone wants to go over there and reply since the Republicans over there can't seem to come up with Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Keith Obermann, Ed Schultz etc. as examples.
If you google "MM Invisapeeps" (yes that is an "a" in the middle) it is the first thing that comes up and that thread is still on the first page.
Thanks in advance and Ace, if you object to my doing this here and delete this comment I understand.

Whoa! Even I know this crosses the cruelty line! Nevada Dems imply that SCOAMF has leprosy!
ThatÂ’s just harsh!

Romney is a joke. Romney isn't right of center, he is a democrat...might as well be Bloomberg. Aside from garnering support from Mormon cultists, he won't get enough support to beat Obama.
No. Actually Romney is fairly conservative. Look at his positions on the issues. He had to compromise considering he was governing of an extremely liberal state.
Perry had the advantage of governing in a conservative state, yet supported the Trans Texas Corridor, one of the most gargantuan public works eminent domain land grabs in United States history. Conservative Republicans & Democrats were thankfully able to stop it. It was big government monstrosity.

That Romney will win in the long run, and is hoping for a seat at the table for being an early supporter. It's simply a horse race bet, and purely political. It means very little to me except that Flake is willing to put strict ideology aside for political reasons if it will advance his career. Which if he represented me would be a black mark, but since he's nowhere near me, it's not a huge issue.
So yeah, supporting Romney does make me as a reflex not view Romney any better, but view the supporter worse. And the Romney supporters who think that is somehow prejudicial need to f*ing remember this is the second time he's ran. We've had *plenty* of time to get to know him and form a solid opinion about him. One that is not likely to change since he hasn't put any more lines on his resume since the last time he ran, other than, was the great grand daddy of O-care.
So folks coming out with an endorsement aren't going to have the same effect because Romney is not an unknown quantity like the other candidates, thanks to his national primary last time.

I don't see him having a path to the nomination. If his plan is to win Florida and parlay that into success, a much smarter northeastern liberal Republican already tried that and it didn't work.

Throw in some "Hush Bimbo" non sequiturs and it'd be as though I were reading a transcript.

I guess all that money we donated last week bought a shit-load of Valu-Rite.
Here, let's fight over something important: Is if Val-U-Rite, Valu-Rite, Val U Rite, or omg I don't care just set up an IV drip?

You guys know me. IÂ’m a peaceful sort. IÂ’m totally down with this push for civility in our discourse. That said, somebody should take a giant flamethrower and shove it a yard up this bastardÂ’s ass and give it a good long flaming squirt. In a civil sort of way, of course.

I have to disagree with Klavan for once...
No one really believes THEMSELVES to be evil. They all have 'good' intentions... they just don't care about the consequence to those who are hurt by the act... or (as in Obama's case IMO) have aims which justify their means.
However, to a GROUP outside that aim... which the means hurts... it IS an evil act....
IMO Obama has, for me, crossed the line into Evil....

Okay, if it is such a liberal state, how was it that voters were comfortable voting for such a conservative? Did he run as a liberal? Did he run as a conservative and they just didn't believe him? Why does he not treat RomneyCare like the crap-sandwhich it is and begin his defense with "No, I wouldn't sign it, in retrospect..."
Also, why is he still in favor of Ethanol subsidies? Why is he using Democrat style Medi-Scare tactics, when he, himself, described Social Security as a "criminal enterprise?"
As for the TTC- Texas is a huge, huge state. Just so you understand, El Paso is closer to San Diego than it is to Dallas/Fort Worth. Dallas is further from Houston than NYC is from Philadelphia. We need better throughput from the south to the North. I opposed TTC because it would have bypassed Fort Worth, not because it was a terrible idea. And if Eminent domain does not exist for the building of roads, then for what does it exist? Would TTC required the State to take (seize, if you will, but plenty of farmers were happy to sell) a great deal of land? Yes. Was it some Kelo-style land-grab? No, not at all.

I've lived in Texas since 1971. I'm aware it's a large state. Eminent Domain exists as a tool that must be used by the goverment with the greatest of care, as it is in direct conflict with the most basic of private property rights.
The notion that all the ranch and farm owners would be pleased as punch to sell their land involuntarily is false. Some would, some wouldn't. Forcing people off their land is something that should be done only when necessary. Thankfully both Democrats and Republicans in Texas were able to thwart this gratuitous overreach of the state government.
As for Romney in Massachusetts, he portrayed himself as economic reformer with fairly progressive positions on social issues. As governor he cut spending significantly. He also raised fees. It was give and take.
Ethanol = Issue that is not of earth shaking concern to me.
E-Verify (Perry opposed it) = More important issue.
With respect to "Medi-scare", Romney is doing what is necessary to win the nomination, and more importantly innoculate himself in a general election against age old charges that we want to take away or jeopardize what's been promised to the elderly. Those who think that Perry has done himself any favors in a general election by his statements on the subject so far have got to be kidding themselves. I beginning to think that some would rather lose with Perry than win with Romney.
