Dow Down 634
— Ace

Bad.

“Once we took out Friday’s lows, it was like a trapdoor opened,” Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services told CNBC. “This is very heavy volume again and that tells me that we’ve got people liquidating to raise cash.

Incidentally:

Moody's repeated a warning it could downgrade the United States before 2013 if the fiscal or economic outlook weakened significantly.

One funny thing: Remember when all the smart set made fun of Glenn Beck's audience for buying up gold...?

Yeah. They don't talk about that anymore, do they?

Rush: "Barackaclypse Now;" "Debt Man Walking."

Says Obama can be "landslided" in 2012.

Problem with some of the gold Beck was peddling was that it was just paper, and not hard asset gold, and I never appreciated Beck not being clear on that.

Thanks Ace.

This president is incapable of speaking directly to the American people in a genuine way. Today's speech was absolutely terrible, just terrible.

To blame the downgrade on anyone other than his own party and administration is so far beyond the pale of credibility demonstrates we are clearly dealing with folks who have no compunction.

Speaking in such petulant terms will further divide this nation and drive the markets south.

This is what pre-collapse tastes like.

Purchase numismatic gold and silver and if you are 59.5 years old or older get the sam hill out of mutual funds and out of dollar denonimated assets.

The next play and the only remaining play will be eventually to nationalize interest bearing 401(k) type deferred assets in order to provide liquification to the fed and treasury.

Oh, think that's in the twilight zone?

We ain't seen nothing yet.

Turbulence is the only known variable in this horrific mess.

Or maybe put a down payment on the debt?

These are unquestionably, across the board, the worst markets and economic conditions I have seen in 26 years.

It's a plot, a devious, twisted, and deceptive plan to make things as bad as can be, temporarily! For the next eight months the economy will start shrinking, unemployment will remain over 9%, interest rates will be going up slowly, food prices will rise, and the wars continue.

Then amazingly next July or August unemployment will drop, the GDP will pop, prices increases will stop, there will be no new tax increases and this will continue for three more months up to the election.

Obama will be declared our saviour and appointed to his next ten year term by acclamation of the Mainstream Media. No need to vote.

I'm not sure we have that much time. It's true that anticipation of a conservative landslide in November '12 might pick up business confidence well in advance of the election, the way that the prospect of a Democrat sweep in '08 helped tank the economy back then.

But still. The Dems just got handed a $2.5 trillion invoice to buy votes and further erode our credit rating. They still have the mass media and tens of millions of easily-fooled voters at their disposal. November 2012 is about 16 months away and it seems like a lifetime.

It's time for a choice. We either "eat our peas" and go through a deflationary depression, destroying all the bad debt, or we go Weimar, an (hyper-)inflationary depression, destroying the debt by repaying it in worthless dollars.

This is the most horrific economic witches brew that has yet to be poured that one could ever imagine.

Got it, and I concur.

I'm thinking of this summer as an event horizon. We have no way of predicting what awaits us, except knowing that it'll involve a lot of hurt. The one certainty I have is that there's no fix and there's no going back. (OK, two certainties.)

For the record, I'm already starting to think of the financial crisis of 2007–2009 as the tranquil, care-free days of a long-gone era.

243 By election day, if this keeps up, we may have troops in the streets.  (American troops, if we're lucky.)  And hunting Democrats for their pelts will not only be legal, but encouraged (with no bag limit).

I think what astonishes me isn't the collapse (that could be foreseen since the 'kinder, gentler' Bush I term, when we knew that Reagan was not only not revered by the GOP 'caretakers', but that they'd actively RUN from conservative principles).  No, the thing that shocks me is the speed at which the decline is taking hold.  It reminds me of watching Eastern Europe go from Warsaw Pact slave states to democracies, almost in the space of a nightly newscast.  Only this time, we are going in reverse, because I'm prepared to bet a month's income that both parties' answer to this crisis will be...more government.  It always is.

We failed.  Our children will know narrower lives and tougher prospects.  Our decling years will be spent remembering better days, like those old-money English families that watch their grand homes sold to rock stars and Arabs to live in flats that get spray-painted by the yobs at 3AM.

UNLESS...

We better have a candidate that is going to have coat-tails a mile long, that is able to not just get himself elected, but to sweep the board of political adversaries, so that what needs to be done CAN get done.  No McCains, Romneys, Huntsmans (Huntsmen?), or any other RINO-squish Dem-lite soft-talkers.  Fire-breathing CONSERVATIVE; no apologies for intemperate speech, no backing off, no compromises, no goddam' make-nice, EVER.  I want a vinegarey old cuss that hates his enemies and doesn't give two good goddams for any anti-conservative that gets in his way.  I want a political hit-man.

But I don't know if John Bolton could be drafted.  I'd be afraid he'd shotgun me off his porch for asking if he was available.

You can't beat something with nothing, so it all depends on the nominee.  If it's Perry or Romney there's a good chance (maybe a very good chance) Obama can be defeated.  Otherwise don't be shocked if he and the media/unions/academia pull a reelection out of their arses.  There's a huge difference between the talk radio and Internet demographic and the body politic.

Two other key factors are the job market next year and the extent to which conservatives will stay home and not vote.  The former is likely to get much worse, but a rebound of sorts can't completely be ruled out.  Regarding the latter issue, well, there's not much to say.  You can't fix irrational and ignorant.

295 I think Obama did it on purpose along with his henchman Democrats.

Nobody could be so feckless and have such a dearth of leadership as to let this happen.

The response? No different than what he has preached for two plus years now; attack the messenger, divide our countrymen with rhetoric and undertake actions which display his indifference.

Now he's off on fundraisers? Is that the action of a man who is concerned with our country or with himself?

Obama will line his campaign coffers and use the money to try and once again hoodwink the American public instead of appelaing to facts, logic and common sense.

329 I disagree with Limbaugh that Obama is doing all of this on purpose.

My father is exactly like Obama. He's 82 years old and has learned absolutely nothing in his life. (Apologies to people who'll think I'm being disrespectful to my old man; this is plain reality.)

My father is rigid, insecure, inflexible, dogmatic, and convinced of his own intellectual and moral superiority. His life has been marred by an unbroken string of failures in his profession, his personal life, and his family life, but these failures are always someone else's fault. The way my father and Obama work is that they pick an approach and stick with it no matter what, because they simply cannot admit to mistakes. To admit to mistakes threatens the collapse of their entire house of cards. Their actual identities are built on fraudulence; admitting to being wrong in one area will call into question everything, and down they will go.

Obama and my father are incapable of learning, because they believe that they already know everything. They are never wrong. I only found out about three weeks ago that my father was essentially fired from Exxon because he refused to do what his bosses required. We had been told that he retired early because he was sick of the stress. The reality was that he worked for Exxon for 25 years and refused the entire time to do things any way but his own. He fought with his bosses from day one because he'd arbitrarily decided that he knew better. Finally they had enough and canned his ass.

Limbaugh has never met anyone like Obama. I, on the other hand, was raised by someone exactly like him. Obama is doing what he's doing because he's incompetent and psychologically impaired. Here's the key: He's also a drunk. Obama's behavior is classically alcoholic.

Don't believe that this is part of a nefarious plan to bring us down. What's happening is that an extremely fucked-up alcoholic is plowing ahead with his failed policies because he can't change. That's all. The good news is he won't be able to come up with anything different, so if he has a good opponent in 2012 he'll be defeated.

The bad news is if he's reelected, we'll have four more years of failure, denial, paranoia, and self-serving excuses. Obama will never improve. He's stuck. At 82 my father is in exactly the same place that he was when he was 10. He's learned nothing. Obama can't learn, so that's why he's sticking with his failed policies. He's not trying to destroy us; he simply can't change course because in his mind that would mean his own complete destruction.

The worst is yet to come.

It is September 2008 all over again. It might take several months for the damage to the broader economy to materialize, but it will and this time that damage will be impossible for even the LSM to ignore. The U.S. will slide into an even more crushing recession, only we'll be starting out with a 12% "real" unemployment rate, hundreds of states and municipalities on the verge of bankruptcy, and not have the luxury of being able to borrow or “stimulate” the economy via debt or lower interest rates.

There will be no bailouts, no liquidity injections from central banks nor will there be a face ripping market rebound this time.

Be ready.

370 Speaking of WI, the Iowa State Fair last year had "youths" performing a "Get Whitey Night" on the last night of the fair.  It was presaged by some disorganized thuggery the night before, but seemed more organized the following night. There was a little bit of it in the local press at the time, but it was very muted. There was the usual race hustling, head-in-the-sand stuff.  You know the drill.  Hopefully, DSM police will be better prepared.

376 The worst is yet to come. It is September 2008 all over again. It might take several months for the damage to the broader economy to materialize, but it will and this time that damage will be impossible for even the LSM to ignore. Remember it took 18 months to recover to the last pre-TARP levels on the market, just before it was signed into law. And that was after two doses of QE Ecstasy. No such luck now.

377 Speaking of WI, the Iowa State Fair last year had "youths" performing a "Get Whitey Night" on the last night of the fair.

One thing about the Left, they are very predictable.

Don't know about Boxer, but Moonbeam maybe.  Whitman was looking to be worse than the Terminator.. who turned out to be worse than a straight up demo-traitor.  She gave pandering speeches to hispanics and supported the 'final solution' cap and trade bill for CA.  No Republican or conservative could ever support that.  She was a tool and would only hurt the conservative brand.  Moonbeam is a loser, but at least after his damage CA may be forced to re-negotiate public union pensions which are sickening.  I mean Jesus H Christ life guards are making 130k a year and they aren't required to rescue people if they don't have certain certifications!  haha its OZ out here folks!

John is probably the last person in the country that is non-PC.  To the extreme.  I love it.  He really does call it like it is, and the L.A. Times pieces on the poor, poor illegal aliens being ripped to shreds by John is always classic!  I cannot even repeat some of the stuff he says on here.

CA isn't a complete Blue state nightmare like some think.  There are pockets around Southern California that are ultra conservative.

There were commenters out there, way back in 2008, who posted that perhaps we were better off with Obama, as he was sure to implode as he has, and discredit the Democrat party, much like his apparent role model, Jimmy Carter. I wasn't sure if the country could make it through 4 years of this, and I'm still not. I try to be an optimist but it just doesn't look good at all.
