— rdbrewer Nouriel Roubini, a/k/a "Dr. Doom," went on Bloomberg TV to make his latest predictions about the world's economy:
WeÂ’ve reached a stall speed in the economy, not just in the U.S., but in the euro zone and the UK. We see probably a 60 percent probability of recession next year, and, unfortunately, weÂ’re running out of policy tools.....and sovereigns cannot bail out their own distressed banks because they are distressed themselves.
(Emphasis mine.) At the Ambrosetti Forum in Italy, Roubini said in an interview with CNBC that the situation is worse that 2008, that this time there is fiscal austerity and that banks "are being cautious."
Business Insider says Roubini has been predicting a double dip recession for four years, however, and adds:
Remember, this is the traditional summer doldrums, and markets are still reeling from the unprecedented downgrade of the U.S. debt by S&P, black swans flocking in Europe certainly has only added to the market turmoil and volatility. So it is logical to see some mixed and somewhat pessimistic data coming out of this current environment, but they are not indicative enough to extrapolate out a recession.
They go on to remind us that 2012 is an election year and that "the Fed, the Obama Administration, and the Democratic Party will pull out all the stops to stave off a downright recession." But I wonder if the Fed belongs on that list.

Don't worry about it, Obama's pals can orchestrate another financial crisis just like 2008 after McCain took the lead in the polls, thus making sure Obama get re-elected.
At 2 minutes, 20 seconds into this C-Span video clip, Kanjorski reports on a "tremendous draw-down of money market accounts in the United States, to the tune of $550 billion dollars." According to Kanjorski, this electronic transfer occured over the period of an hour or two.
Oh, wait, you mean it doesn't work if you are already in office? Who knew? Funny how this story of sovereign level funds being extracted at the same time has never been really investigated by the media. Anywhere. Scary stuff.

No, I'm sure they'll honor their oaths. They are, after all, our duly elected reps, and take their responsibilities seriously. But to be sure, we could wire them all up and if 51% of the people disapprove of what they do, we give 'em the juice. Not that I've fantasized along these lines or anything.

Technically, we did, but it was a dead cat bounce.
1) The economy shrinks for two quarters, contracting 10%. Recession
2) The economy grows for two quarters, expanding 2%. Recession over.
We are worse off than before, but by the old definition, out of recession. We need a new model.

They did it wrong the first time.. A few measly percent went into infrastructure, and most of it went to keeping lazy-assed state employees (union of course) in their cushy jobs..
Although, it did raise the GDP a few percent, but was it worth it??
Now, maybe a couple trillion into pure infrastructure.. roads,etc.. big fucking projects.. that might help, but stimulus only lasts for so long.

The best the we can do for our economy is to ramp up domestic energy production. Drill here, drill now. Drill ANWAR, frak Pennsylvania, build clean coal conversion plants. Put Americans to work & lower energy costs for all Americans.
Will this solve everything? Of course not. Will this make our economy substantially better? Can I get an 'Amen!' from the choir?

Click my name for a InstaP. linked must-read piece. Scroll down to the third letter that starts off "Dear Rawles Family". It's a woman who prepped for a storm or worse despite her husband's best efforts. I'm glad they are okay, and it's hysterical to read how she handled the situation and her husband.
This is important because he hated that I am a prepper. He took stuff out of the car that I put in. He removed supplies when I am not looking from bags I have packed and has gotten into heated arguments with me when I try to get him to buy one extra can of meat at the store. He will not, under any circumstances allow me to store water. He would rather sock money away, I would rather sock supplies away. For the first time, he was glad I was a prepper. I warned him that if he took anything out of our vehicle without telling me and we needed it on the way home that I was going to kill him. We were fine.

Higher wages in the third world are already forcing American companies who moved offshore to reconsider coming back.
We buy a lot of shit in this country.. demand is there. Problem is, we don;t make a lot of that crap anymore.. Lower energy prices as another inducement.. lower corporate taxes.. make them lower than any of our competitors... I'm thinking about 15-20%. That'll get things humming again.
Oh... and one more thing.. government paid or assisted projects need to use American made products. I look at all these wind farms going up, and where is that stuff made? Germany, Brazil.. not here.

I think we are moderately to significantly screwed for quite a few years ahead.
What Obama should have done in 2009 was to reduce excess FedGov spending and significantly reduce taxes on corporations, dividends and capital gains. That would have taken 12 - 18 months to show the beginnings of real growth, but if would have refueled the capital markets and encouraged business growth. And get Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac to stop underwriting bad/low cost home loans - the housing market had to find a bottom.
These things, though, are anathema to the modern Democrat Party, and are, in fact, the opposite of what they did. MORE government spending, accelerate the regulatory state, bail out GM and Chrysler (the senior bond cramdown) instead of letting the natural bankcruptcy take place and then maybe afterwards help with the restructuring of newly organized corporations. Juice up Fanny and Freddy some more (and FHA too). Create the legislative structure for government mandated healthcare with a raft of new mandates and taxes.
This means that whoever follows Obama will have to really administer some hard medicine to find a floor to the markets. Whoever follows Obama will likely be a one - term President because they will have to do a lot of unpopular things just to shake out the sickness in our economy. And even after, there is no guarantee that the economy will actually get better anytime soon.

I heard an O-puppet say on Bulls&Bears this morning that it was "not politically feasible to do that at this time"....regarding raising the minimum wage.
That seems to be the theme with team Clusterf*ck these days: 'Not politically feasible to do that at this time".... Hence the halting of those EPA regs, and anything else that could be politically damaging to KingPut's reelection next year.
All of which portends the epic f*ckery that lies in store for us if we lose next year.

I understand the temptation, but what's the difference between this and using the government to prop up unrealistically high wages at GM or unrealistically high housing prices? Better that we come to grips with the reasons for our lack of economic competitiveness, and do what we need to do to become competitive again.

As long as the policy is intervention, control, and overregulation, the economy will never improve. Capitalism has been tinkered with for a long time and forced by law to do things for which it was not designed (think Gibson Guitars). My wife was complaining about the very same thing and I got to thinking about where the largest concentration of Blacks live. The 2010 census breaks down this info by state and with rare exception the states that are Red such as the South have the highest % of Blacks. They vote like a communist block( 96%) but the electoral vote goes to the Repub. in the red states. Illinois has a high % Black but they are reliably Blue anyway, so I don't think they really can sway a national election as much as they can screw up local and state.

The dwindling allure of building

“Sometime around 2015, manufacturers will be indifferent between locating in America or China for production for consumption in America,” says Mr Sirkin. That calculation assumes that wage growth will continue at around 17% a year in China but remain relatively slow in America, and that productivity growth will continue on current trends in both countries. It also assumes a modest appreciation of the yuan against the dollar.

Maybe the trend is in this direction - I hope so. But just this morning, I was looking to order a pair of jeans from the Duluth Trading Company's catalogue. The style I was looking at - the midweight five-pocket jeans - were $79.50 from a domestic manufacturer, and $39.50 imported. Pretty much the same product, from what I could tell, except that the import had more features.
Again, this is anecdotal evidence, your mileage may vary. But it does suggest to me that both we and China have a way to go before that tipping point is reached.
Posted by: Brown Line at September 03, 2011 07:59 AM (k+PSJ)
both we and China have a way to go before that tipping point is reached.
Yes. But then, Duluth isn't necessarily selling those jeans made in America, including imports in their catalog inventory.
On tipping China, consider also how to halt the US taxpayer funding for domestic China's educational system.
