— Ace Currently it's two groups of people videotaping each other with cellphones. In one case, two people are cell-phone taping each other's cell-phones.
Several of the BlogCon guys are barring the door to the conference room.
There's about 20 of them. They're fairly young and dirty and speak in a strange jargon like the Oasis Tribe in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
Now they're doing that "mike check" thing, and are chanting.
The BlogCon folks are now chanting back: "WE. are. the 99%."
The BlogCon people began chanting, "We want the dog, we want the dog." Apparently these mutants were the ones who elected a dog as a leader or something.
A dirty blond mongrel tried to bullrush into the room, and was repelled. And also, wasn't allowed to enter. When the hell are the cops going to get here?
The BlogCon people continue chanting snarky things, like "I like spaghetti!" "Breitbart, Breitbart!" and "This is what losing looks like!" The cops are escroting the hoboes out to the rousing serenade of nah-nah-nah, hey-ey-ey, goodbye.

Well, damn. I was just in the neighborhood and didn't notice anything untoward going on (other than the usual hookers who wouldn't give me the time of day cuz they said the hotel was filled with high rollers).
The #OccupyDenver crowd at Civic Center looked about the same as it had a couple of hours earlier - very sparse since the first snow about a week ago.
I'm happy to report Charlie Brown's looked quiet, so tonight's smoker should be docile. Too bad the con wasn't scheduled between Memorial Day and Labor Day when they barbeque whole pigs on the patio for Friday's happy hours.
No breaking news on any TB outbreak, but if there is, I'll have phlegm at 11:00.

Paterno was told that a kid had been raped in his locker room shower. He passed along the information, not to the police, but to the university. And then nothing happened. Paterno never wondered "gosh, why hasn't anyone from the police contacted me or the graduate assistant? Why is Sandusky still coming to the locker room? Maybe I should follow up on this with the people I reported it to. Maybe I should contact the police."
He did nothing.
These are not unreasonable things to expect a moral person to do.

Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant's report at hishome on a Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called Tim Curley ("Curley"), Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno's immediate superior, to his home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy.
It is crystal clear that Paterno knew that something inappropriate was going on between Sandusky, who had been investigated four years earlier for similar behavior at PSU, and a pre-pubescent boy. Paterno had a moral obligation to pursue the matter.
The only reason they have not pursued criminal charges against McQueary is that they need his testimony to prosecute because they do not (or did not) have the identity of the boy.

I don't know that they did. It's certainly possible some (most?) of the assistants and other coordinators were unaware.
However, I do believe they're all "stained" by the issue, and should be removed. Not because I think they're all guilty, but because they're all inextricably tied to JoePa, and, therefore, this scandal.

The story they wanted, more then any in the world, was that Joe Paterno got fired. They didn't give a shit about finding who dropped the ball -- or thought it was no big thing. Not one iota -- because a story about some PhD in psychology who thought that an adult male having sexual relations with a minor was no big thing -- and maybe consensual in their twisted minds. They wanted the story that would get them headlines, and front page coverage. They got it.
And the stupid football coach of five decades who did everything the University requires in reporting second-hand information takes the wrath while the PhD lives another day.

Paterno testified to the grand jury that he was told Sandusky was fondling or something of a sexual nature to a young boy. We don't have the transcripts, just the grand jury report that I quoted above. But it is clear that Paterno knew it Sandusky was molesting a boy. Using a euphemistic word like fondling does not change that Paterno knew that Sandusky was doing something criminal.
Moreover, it defies belief that Paterno was not aware of the six week long police investigation into Sandusky's conduct with a young boy at the PSU football facility in 1998.
As for why McQueary is still on staff. In my experience in higher ed it's a lot easier to fire an executive, and I'd put Paterno into that category, than it is to fire a regular staff person. And when there's a scandal, they always chop off the heads, then root out the rest of the problem at their leisure. Now that PSU has started an investigation, they should take the time to do things correctly.

Perhaps, with the clarity of 20/20 hindsight that would have been the
right thing to do. But I have been in the classroom where a student came
in and said something like, "you know Jimmy and Jeff are doing
something icky in the stall" and it being my job have investigated,
found nothing, yet passed the information on to the higher ups. They do
follow up, you know. Or they're damn well supposed to. But going around
calling the police over a second-hand piece of information is a sure way
to either end up in court defending oneself against a defamation suit
or being fired. The witness bears the brunt of the responsibility, and
bringing a watered-down version of what one witnessed to an eighty-year
old coach hardly qualifies in my book as the best one can do to stop an
intolerable situation.
How can I tell you something that would be a lie? The requirements are to report. If it was something he witnessed and failed to report I'd be ripping his scalp out myself, handful by handful. Once again, a second hand report is virtually worthless. The responsibility of the 'higher ups' is to call the witness into the office and get first-hand testimony and proceed from there.

He's hardly the sole culprit and from what I read, the events reported to him weren't 'watered-down'. Events that he KNEW had taken place before. More heads are going to roll, as well they should...and it is completely proper that Paterno is one of them.

No one is solely pointing the finger at Paterno. There's a WHOLE LONG LINE of fail involved with this. He's at the top of the food chain at that university, knew his assistant was doing something drastically wrong and only reported something peculiar to his "superiors."
