Dupnik's Report: Yeah, Loughner Did Make Death Threats
— Ace

I had left a question mark about this element of the charge. But as commenters, and Moe Lane, tell me, Dupnik himself confessed that Loughner had made death threats.

He didn't say against whom, but I have a pretty good guess that Gabrielle Giffords was one of the targets.

So... of course this is Sarah Palin's fault.

Did you know when Sarah Palin resigned the governorship she immediately assumed the position of Acting Sheriff of Pima County? It's true; it's right there in the Alaska Constitution. If you resign your post as governor you immediately become sheriff of an Arizona County.

Bad Sarah. Very bad Sarah.

5 From the Arizona Daily Star, early on in the news cycle.

http://tinyurl.com/27hamen

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik would not confirm Loughner is the suspected shooter. He said the person arrested for the shooting is uninjured and uncooperative.

The suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers, but the threats weren't against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Dupnik said. The suspect is unstable, Dupnik said, but the sheriff would not say he is "insane."

7 Yes, but he made those death threats before Palin's rise to national prominence.  Everybody knows that she pushed him over the edge to the point where he had to carry those threats out.

8 The kid is the son of a city civil servant. The local Dem flunky of a Sheriff let's him off after making death threats. Let me try to guess what kind of people this kid could have been threatening to have a Dem flunky dismiss it? I'm thinking Republicans.

9 This is really, really sad.

Actually, though, I doubt Rep Gifford's name was on the list.  It's one thing for a Sheriff's Department official to tell some blogger or radio personality "Hey, it's being taken care of, don't worry about it," and a whole different thing to explain to a United States Representative why she shouldn't be concerned.

The fact is, it doesn't matter who was named in those death threats.  Death threats are not okay, and in most states are illegal to make.  Between that and his (presumably known) mental issues, it should have been forced to trial just to make sure he would "get help," if nothing else.

It also makes it much more likely that this sheriff is doing his best, not to investigate the crime and accumulate enough evidence to send this guy to the death chamber, but to cast as wide a net as possible to find someone, anyone, he can blame besides his own department.

I'm presuming the guy didn't call up the Sheriff's office and say "I'm planning to kill [x]."  Since what I read at Choll's place was that people were told that it was being handled, the reason the Sheriff's dept. knows there were other death threats were because they were reported by the objects of said threats.

Ergo, if Rep. Gifford had been one of them, she (or her office) would have already known.  Indeed, if Rep. Gifford's office knew of a death threat by someone in the county where she'd be having this appearance, I bet security would have been much tighter in the first place.

31 While this whole episode has truly saddened me, it has only increased my resolve in supporting Sarah Palin. She is good. They are not. Deep down, they know it. The amount of hatred spewed at her is without precedent. She is getting 10X the hate and lies that Reagan and Bush did and they were actual Presidents! "Art exhibits" where people pose with a gun aimed Sarah's head with her daughter right next to her in the picture. Hung by a noose. Countless violent images of rape and murder with her face bruised and bloodied. Cunt, bitch, whore, racist, homophobe, and now MURDERER. And they lecture us on "Rhetoric?" No, the left will not decide who is acceptable and electable. I am not playing that game anymore. I learned my lesson and I learned it well. PLEASE, join me.

33 In my state, and in others I would wager, a person can be involuntarily committed if he is found to be a threat to himself or others--and evidence of threats (of suicide or murder) would be strong evidence in support of such a finding.  It is reprehensible that this young man wasn't commited.  Sherriff Dipstick has some splainin to do.

35 I once believed no Republican would ever scare the liberal-left-wing like Reagan did. They bounced off ceilings and walls when he opened his mouth. They tried several tactics to destroy him and he simply laughed at them. Talk about frothing at the mouth. It was very amusing to watch.

But I was wrong. Another Republican has come along who is on the verge of putting some of these leftoids in the hospital. Such weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth I've never, ever seen. They are looking for every possible rock they can throw at this woman.

But I also know why they hate and fear her so much. She doesn't always have a snappy comeback like Reagan but she does have "The Look" that says so much derisively in so little time. Without even saying a thing, Sarah Palin can become the center of attention in the news and emerge afterwards as good, and at times even more popular, than when she went in. I wonder when the word "Teflon" will come out (probably never since it is too dated but I'm sure there's another waiting in the wings).

Sounds to me like someone got to this sheriff (D) in Arizona even as the story broke and he happily frog-marched into the fray. Could be he's just ambitious but I suspect a little coaching from unknown quarters. Now that the facts show this murderer was a "Leftwing Pothead", the lefty blogs are scrubbing away and Fox News is making a few back step a bit. I knew the MSM was in the tank long  ago but it's a little sad they don't even pretend anymore. While idiots in Congress will use this to push one thing or another -- gun control being one -- someone should be sounding the alarm that our Fourth Estate has been essentially taken hostage.

36 This McCarthyism of the left - devoid of intellectual content, unsupported by data - is a mental tic, not an idea but a tactic for avoiding engagement with ideas. It expresses limitless contempt for the American people, who have reciprocated by reducing liberalism to its current characteristics of electoral weakness and bad sociology.

Would a couple of brand-new Beltones and a year's supply of batteries help?

I figure he's going to be unemployed within the week, so I'm not willing to take the risk that shipments reach him too late to help. I vote "no".

But a case of PoliGrip might be the thing that enables him to seek employment ... as a WalMart greeter.

Normally, I might be inclined to think that Dupnik probably has many files of people who have made threats in the past, dangerous people out on parole, known criminals and bad actors that have been sighted in the city, all sorts of things. Inevitably, you cannot track everyone 24/7/365, and some things are going to go wrong.

Normally, I would figure that I am not a law officer and don't know exactly what can and cannot be reasonably foreseeable or prevented, and do not like to second guess people who are trying to do their jobs. It ain't a perfect world out there, and surely none of us reach perfection in trying to deal with it.

But here, here I hope every bit of political scapegoating and bad karma Dupnik has tried to unleash comes back tenfold to make his life a sea of chaos.

I read the link and see that Sheriff Dupnik admits that the lunatic "made threats to kill" but gives the impression that his agency didn't have first-hand contact.  In due course we will discover which law enforcement agency didn't take multiple death threats seriously.

This Loughner character obviously should have been involuntarily commited a long time ago.  The behavior of his family makes me suspect that they fought said commitment.

I emailed Ace about this, but youse guys n' gals can try this experiment at home:

-Flip open a box of breakfast cereal, or look at the inside flaps of pretty much any 4-color printed food box. What do you see smiling up at you? Yep, those 'crosshair gun sights' that the press and the lefty pillowbiters are soiling themselves over. They're printer registration marks, and they're there to help the printer line up the various color printing runs on the box. They're not there because Sarah Palin has a bead on Captain Crunch, although that would make a Kos-worthy headline.
