But nobody is perfect, and keeping a pistol ready is a good backup plan.  Plan A is mainly just having common sense.

I don't know why women keep buying these .38 lightweight framed revolvers.  They are pretty uncomfortable to practice sufficiently with.  Get a .45 semiauto or even a 20 gauge shotgun for home defense.  It's a lot easier for a woman to shoot a full frame .45 than to shoot a tiny little .38 revolver, and it's far more powerful and accurate.

Don't believe me?  Go borrow your grandma/mom's .38 and practice firing 200 rounds with it.

I've seen that it really is a matter of personal preference.  My wife is a former Army officer, but she just really doesn't like semi-autos.  She feels much more comfortable (and accurate) with a revolver.

Case in point: I have three handguns in the house.  The first is, actually, a full-sized .45 ACP (a Para-Ordnance 14-45, to be exact).  I have have a Glock 23 I carry when I'm out and about.

She does her best shooting with the Smith & Wesson Model 66, a stainless steel revolver with a 4-inch barrel loaded with hot .38 Special +P rounds.

Because the light weight means that unlike a shotgun or 1911 (which literally weighs 2.5lbs loaded, half the weight of a standard construction brick)  they're actually carryable, that's why. 

Size of the grip is also generally good for women's hands, and the revolver is much simpler to use than most automatics (fewer controls).

Personally, I love my Smith 637 airweight .38, though the missus has an all steel version.

Surprise happy endings always make me cry giggle maniacly.

Anyone else reminded of the story where this old guy goes next door to where a drunken scumball is yelling at this chick he is stalking to come out of her house - this also at 3am.  Asks him nice like to keep it down, since she's out of town anyway.

Scumball pistol-whips him, and as the old guy is laying on the grass, keeps asking him "You want a piece of me?!"

Fortunately scumball is only packing a pellet-gun.  Unfortunately for scumball, old guy is packing a Glock .40.  Hilarity ensures, but very, very briefly. 

Later, as the police detective is taking the old guy's statement (scumball made no statement - ever again), detective asks "When he was saying 'You want a piece of me?' - did you answer him?"  Old guys says he doesn't remember.

Detective says "Okay, we'll just put you down for 'Yes'".

Try firing 200 rounds of 00 buckshot through the shotgun you suggested earlier, and I think you'd be hurting quite a bit more. 

The point is, you don't need to fire 200 rounds in one sitting.   Are you going to shoot someone five times, reload, repeat, then do it again 38 more times?

Personally, I've got zero problem firing 50 rounds of .38+P through my 15 ounce Smtih 637 at a session and have done so many times.  If you wanted to buy me three more boxes of ammo that day, I'd happily shoot them, no problem.   "Trick" is just to use a "deathlike" grip on the gun to squelch the harsh flip.

Also, if you take off the teensy stock "boot" grips, and replace them with nice soft rubber full three finger grips, that alone cuts the discomfort of shooting by 60%.

Story does sound a little off. But sounds like a good ending on the face of it, and hope it's all the way they are representing it to be.

Apparently they like to entertain and party. Nothing wrong with that at all, but if it gets to the point where strangers are coming and going, there is the potential for all kinds of bad stuff. Know of several cases where people got too involved with people they didn't really know but kinda thought they knew (even in non-party situations), and there were some pretty horrendous results.

Most small frame .38 special snubnose revolvers hold 5 rounds. 

I "get" that the crack about .38 special not having a sporting use is a joke, but just to set the record straight, .38 special is actually one of the most accurate handgun cartridges out there, and historically speaking it has been a favorite for competitive centerfire bullseye target pistol.

Nowadays most American competitors are using .45s, because the semi-automatic action works better for NRA-type rapid fire, and because the larger .45 caliber slug is more likely to cut a scoring line, leading to cumulatively higher average scores.

But in wheelgun-only or PPC competitions, people do still use .38s.

I was out shooting with a friend of mine who also happens to be a state police firearms instructor.  "Hey, I'm looking to get a home-defense shotgun.  Which one do you recommend... the Remington 870 Express or Mossberg Persuader?"

So he surprises me in recommending that I get a 20-gauge.  "Pffft.  That's just a kiddie gun!" I say.  "Oh yeah?  So, you wouldn't mind getting hit with a full load of #4 buckshot?  Or a half-ounce slug?"

He pointed out that, in the big picture, there is little difference to the Bad Guy if you tag him with a 12-gauge or a 20-gauge, he's going to be in a world of hurt either way.  And the 20-gauge has much more manageable recoil for follow-up shots, or just to encourage practice on the range.

Right, the .38 special has ended many of a life throughout it's history. A lady Smith, which I believe is the subject of this story, is the perfect gun for a non gun enthusiast to have for self-defense. I pocket carry a .38spl J-Frame just about every day where I can legally carry but it's NOT my choice for a 'bedside' gun.

One reason main reason is capacity, all J-frames (Lady Smiths,) are 5-shots. You will never hear a LEO/Military person tell you they thought they had too many bullets in a situation. Another reason is the length of the barrel which does effect terminal velocity and sight-picture. Still, this young lady did all the right things AFTER the confrontation went down. Anyone ringing a doorbell after 10pm is likely not there to sell you newspapers, expect the worse and prepare.

Disagree big time with that, 12ga means more pellets plus in an emergency situation when ammo *may* be scarce, you'll find a hell of a lot more 12ga than 20ga. Besides, *if* one learns to shoot a shotgun correctly recoil is nothing.

Not to mention, you will find a larger assortment of loads in 12ga than 20, case in point is non-lethal rounds.

I just checked.  Cheaper Then Dirt has plenty of 20-gauge ammo in stock.  And I'm not sure what sort of emergency situation you would be talking about... everybody knows that when the Zombie Apocalypse hits, you'll want a .223 carbine and a machete. 

As for recoil... it's not just me.  My wife uses it as well, and she's a touch recoil-sensitive. 

Non-lethal rounds are a liability nightmare.  If you tag somebody with a beanbag shell and you're not a cop on the job, you're just begging to be arrested or sued.  Basically put... don't be shooting anybody unless deadly force is justified.  And if deadly force is justified, I'm not going to dick around with less-lethal ammo.

If the boyfriend was an unlicensed pharmaceuticals salesman, I would have expected him to have a firearm himself.  It sounds like he would have had enough time since the bad guy was occupied with the girlfriend.

However, I do grant the point that the bulk of home-invasions occur to people involved in the drug trade themselves.  The detectives down there will sort it out quickly enough.

I'm amazed she's more accurate with that than she is with the Glock 23 you mentioned, but to each his own.  In my experience, these tiny pistols are recommended to women by gun dealers who are idiots.  They really are much more painful to practice with and as a basic fact inferior due to the short barrel and weaker round, though certainly adequate in a skilled shooter's hands, and better than nothing.  There's the matter of a gun being so heavy you don't carry it around, therefore defeating the purpose of having a gun for concealed carry, but I'm talking about home defense.

You say she just doesn't dig semi autos, and I respect that.  Frankly, I think it takes a much stronger arm to be competent with a light weight revolver, so it bugs me that grannies and petites are the ones I see buying them (and almost never see practicing with them at the range).

75 @69....Fair enough but go loading a slug in a 20ga shotty and fire it a few times compared to a 12ga, to me it's negligible. 20ga is a perfect fowl or sporting gun, I have a couple actually, but it's not a self-defense round. Several ammo manufactures make LE (Low-Energy) 12ga shells with a reduced powder-charge which helps for recoil-sensitivity.

As for the apocalypse, I don't subscribe to that fantasy at all. I just look at situations like Katrina where a Shotty was a valuable thing to have. From a purely self-defense point of view, going to trial in a 870 pump as the weapon versus a taticool AR-!5...Yeah, I'll take that plain shotty for the local jury-pool to examine.

As I said, a good firm and inside mounting of a shotgun allows your body to absorb all the recoil. Even my wife uses and practices with my 870 with slugs, is it fun for her? Not really but for the intended purpose it's a small issue.

The S&W Model 66 ("Combat Masterpiece") is hardly a lightweight gun.  It tips the scales at about 36 ounces, plenty to suck up the recoil of the .38 +P's we feed it.  The rubber Pachmyer grips help, too.

No argument that the .40 S&W or .45 ACP are superior pistol rounds, but a .38 Special +P with a modern hollowpoint bullet is pretty effective nowadays too.  But when it comes down to it, anything fired out of a handgun is pretty ineffective unless you get good shot placement.

On shottys, guage is less important (in home defense), then battery - racking a round and moving indoors with a shotgun require upper body strength and training. We're missing something.

A couple of decades back, my parish priest (Episcopal) was on the front page of all the papers because he fended off a couple of crackheads who had invaded the Rectory.  We all thought it was a kind of cool story.  But, after about two months, he was arrested for possession and other related charges.  It turns out that the invasion was less of a robbery and more of a drug deal gone bad.

A sad case, because he really is a remarkable priest.  Such a waste of talent.

A friend of mine answered the door at 10 PM to find a girl asking directions to a local park.  My friend had to hold back her dog while she gave the directions.  The chick went back to a car in the driveway with two guys in it and they drove off in the wrong direction.

The next day she read the paper to find that the chick and her friends had done a home invasion of another couple in their town, an elderly couple.  They beat them up, hogtied them, robbed them.

They didn't have a dog.

Yeah, much does not add up here.  Aside from what others have written:

Fiance was asleep.....I assume upstairs in his bedroom.  Said he was woken up and ran to rescue his lady.  Then beauty queen breaks away and runs to the bedroom where she kept her gun.  Why didn't her fiance grab the gun when he heard the commotion?  My guess is the shooting took place much earlier than 3am.  Our beauty queen and millionaire "arborist" probably took an hour or two to get their story straight. 

I'd keep an eye on this story.

You know who answers the door at 3 AM? Drug dealers, that's who. And look at the guy, chinless weasel. No way he pulls that babe without a lot of blow. Add the handy home protection device, the fact that they were hanging in bars that night.

I smell drug ripoff attempt, not enough casualties. I'll bet the cops are thinking the same thing.

I just got my first gun last week.  My kid wanted me to get a 45 but I am not comfortable with that just yet.  I wanted a 22 caliber gun cause I really liked target shooting with that and it didn't scare the bejesus out of me.

I ended up with a Ruger.  I think it has a 6" barrel and is perfect for target shooting cause it came with a scope mount to put on it.  I can't wait to go shooting again this weekend.

You guys will have to fill me in later on a good scope for the top of my new baby.

My kid just doesn't get that Mom doesn't want superior fire power...YET.  I want to get good and work my way up to the superior fire power.
