Just some quick hits today:

Victorville, CA: Boned!

Dingy Harry: Don't sweat Social Security! All is well! We've got two decades before we have to worry! By the way, and on a completely unrelated note, I'll probably be dead by then so what do I care if it collapses or not?" (Translation: LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA.)

Speaking of Social Security: Means-testing won't do shit to solve the problem because you'd have to define "rich" so far down that someone barely making $50K per year would have to be shoehorned into the "rich" basket to make means-testing have much impact. (The problem isn't that too many rich people get SS; the problem is that too many poor and middle-class people get it.) It would also expose the program for being the wealth-transfer welfare program it's been all along. (There is some good news hidden in the Social Security bad news, though: Americans are living longer. I'll be able to slave away in the salt-mines until I'm ninety, at this rate! Yay me!)

Teh Krugman finally notices something that has been obvious to most of us for a long time now: The Obama Administration really doesn't give a damn about the unemployed. We can infer this by the fact that nothing Obama has done so far is intended to grow the economy -- every action Obama has taken is intended to expand the reach of the government and the welfare-state. (Of course to Krugman this means MORE GOVERNMENT SPENDING!!!!!, but this also is something we all knew without having to read a word he wrote.)

The sovereign-debt crisis has moved to the back pages in the wake of the natural disaster in Japan and the unrest in the Middle East, but it didn't just go away: Portugal is next in line on the ECB's bailout train. It's becoming a rule of thumb in the Eurozone that a bailout becomes inevitable a couple of days after the leader of the country gives an interview assuring everyone that they definitely won't need a bailout. Spain is next in line, and that's the end of the whole farce, really: there isn't enough money in the whole Eurozone to bail out Spain.

And in other DOOM!-related news: Japan has conceded that the last resort to solving the nuclear-meltdown threat at their crippled Fukushima nuclear plant will be to adopt the "Chernobyl Solution": bury the site under many tons of sand and concrete, and then build a lead-lined crypt over it. The massive need for Yen liquidity on the part of the Japanese government has caused a spike in USD-JPY spreads, but the Yen is sinking back down as the liquidity move completes.

That is a real shitty solution anyway when you do not have a real containment. It is hard to build one after the fact.

In a pain-management doctor's office with my aged dad yesterday, I got to hear the v.predictably pitiful accounts of two mysterious-pain victims who just had to wait the longest time to be relieved of the burden of work. Also another guy who'd been in Seal Team Six.

I've been getting a lot of "there's no real problem, don't freak out" advice from people who know a lot, but then the Japanese cop to things being worse than they expected. It just seems like there are two levels to this thing: 1) the Fukushima situation really is bad. Really. 2) It doesn't threaten us, so the hysteria here is completely unwarranted. Fukushima is worse than the TMI by far at this point (or so it seems to me), and if the fuel-rods catch fire and start throwing radioactive particulates into the air, everyone downwind is in for a really bad day, including the 20 million souls in Tokyo. What are the odds of this happening? I don't know, but they seem to be higher that we were led to believe even a couple of days ago. I guess my take-away is: it's not a big problem for us, but it is a *very* big problem for the Japanese.

The problem we have been having is different people in Japan and the U.S. making conflicting comments and the lack of detailed information being released.

17 I'm not an nuclear physisist, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night. So I have an idea. Why not build reactors over a deep concrete/lead-lined shaft in the ground. If there's ever a disaster, then have the floor of the reactor containment room swing open dumping the core vessel into the shaft. Some engineering would have to be done as to break all physical connections to the core so it could fall - explosive bolting maybe. Contaminated cooling water could also be directed into the shaft. As the vessel falls, it would trigger a cascade of small lead plates and beads to fall on top of the rubble. The shaft could then be filled in with concrete. I call my idea, "Dumping the Core". Seems like a reasonable idea from a simplistic moron perspective. What do you think?

Just burying the pile under sand and boron wouldn't be enough because environmental effects would wear it away. You'd need to enclose it under a containment structure to keep the bad stuff from getting out.

I'm sure you have seen the articles about the dry fuel storage units. Right now that is what everyone is going to. The anti-nuke crowd is blocking Yucca Mountain because they thought when the SFPs filled up the units would all have to shutdown.

So utilities have been building these new storage vaults on-site to store spent fuel in. These units are passive, require no cooling at all (other than air) and are about as safe as safe can get.

All the anti-nuke crowd has done is make it more expensive to operate. That also has been their strategy for a long time. The utilities paid for Yucca Mountain BTW.

WTF? There are 3 things I'm going to look for in determining if this place is becoming LGF-light. Chernobyl debris has been decaying for 25 years, there just isn't much there left to spread.

I started out commenting at HA and still do from time to time. Since I came over to the dark side here at AoSHQ, though, I've found it challenging to continue to comment at HA, but only because I have to watch my mouth. Same planet, different worlds.

We get into big arguments here about Palin (and they are not necessarily that helpful or enjoyable), but I have not gotten the impression that the goal of Palin supporters here is to completely eliminate the voices from her detractors. That is what happened to all of the smaller cities near the coast. Castro Valley where I used to live had affordable housing. In the 60s you could buy a house there for around 20K. The last time I checked they were running 550/sq ft and that is AFTER the "collapse".

Screw Victorville. Damn, the only worse place than Victorville was Wheatland. Edwards is isolated enough to be it's own entity, or it was when I was a kid there, so it wasn't too bad. I didn't despise Edwards, though I always wondered why Little Rock AFB can put on a kick-ass air show every year and Edwards, which was much bigger only put one on every second or third year. Maybe the isolation. It was a test base back then.
