From what I have been reading, it looks like Hosni Mubarak's son was transforming Egypt from a Centralized economy to a more liberal free market economy.  He was also challenging the military for control of the nation. The main political party was just a tool of the military filled with ex military men but Mubarak's son was turning it into a real political party separate from the military.

So, it looks like the Egyptian people hated the wrong Mubarak.

It's funny how history works that way. It's happened before, when Princip killed Franz Ferdinand.  Ferdinand was next in line to the Hapburg monarchy and would have succeeded Franz Joseph. However, Ferdinand had a much more liberal idea for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He wanted to give more autonomy to the lesser "states" within the monarchy and create something more like the United States than a tradional monarch with vassel states. So Princip shot the wrong Habsburg.

It looks like Egypt is condemned to Centralized dictatorial control for the foreseeable future. The protestors cannot win. Eas day that passes, the weaker they become. No one is coming to back them. No us, not Europe, no one. I give it another week before the protests stop and the police really start to crack down.

Why isn't anyone on the right talking about what we are NOT hearing in the Egypt story?

It is a good example of Republicans walking-the-walk when it comes to "politics stops at the water's edge", one that the Democrats never emulate.  I mean of course that we are NOT hearing a steady stream of Republican politicians in the media, talking about how flawed the President's response to the crisis is, and how the crisis should have been foreseen, and of course prevented.  And thus of we do not see the media then runing with those stories, conducting interviews with "experts" to validate the spin, and evolving them until they become THE story.

The right should be making this point - we put country first and do not succumb to the temptation to use every world crisis as a club to beat our political opponents.  It is a simple and clear example of the contrasts between the politics of the left and the right.

So the good news is that when we have a Democrat in office we not only get more positive economic news, but we let the President and his team work our foreign policy to the advantage of the country.  The bad news: that is not always the priority of a Democrat President, or within his abilities!

Well, that makes sense since kibbutznics tend to be died-in-the-wool true believer socialists.  Even though pretty much all the kibbutzim were total failures, and have since turned into moshavim (where people own their own farming land) or been broken up and sold outright.

It's odd that the kibbutzim, as wildly left-wing as they were, tended to produce a hugely disproportionate number of Israel's elite fighters - something like 30% of the elite units were kibbutznics even though they only made up around 2% of the population.  I always figured that this was due to the fact that they were farmers and farm life just builds heartier people.

The things they used to do on the kibbutaim were so far left that even American socialists would be shocked - like they used to take kids away from their parents very early to all be raised together in the "children's house".  That particularly weird experiment was eventually rejected by all the kibbutzim after a generation or two.  Kibbutzim also used to rotate everyone through every job, basically, trying to be as equal as possible - which is one of the reasons why the kibbutzim were all total failures.  That piece of leftist wisdom was also abandoned, though not as quickly as the child one.

Even so, former kibbutznics still tend to be wildly left in their politics.

You have cause and effect backwards.... one of the things that historicly create unrest are food price increases... and some say that food prices in Egypt helped spark this Protest movement.

French Revolution, Hitler's rise to power, Russian Revolution... all happened when food prices spiked, so people lost trust in the Governments ability.

Actualy, if'n I remember correctly... the Nile used to Flood, and replenish the soil in the Nile basin... but with modern flood control the soil quality is eroding...

Modern farming methods can overcome this... but key word is "modern".

Re corn, quite a few interesting answers.  I assume that the ethanol boost probably did more for the price than the unrest, but given that commodity speculation can be triggered by almost anything I suppose it will never be totally clear.  I guess the upshot is that those idiots in Egypt will need to figure out how to restore the fertility of the Nile Delta (which they destroyed in the name of hydroelectric power).  Looks like lots of folks have time to screw around in street protests - sending them back to the farm might be a good way to occupy their time.

I doubt that the corn price will stay up long.  The government's been paying farmers to leave land sitting doing nothing - I suspect a lot of that will come back into production in the next couple years at growing become more lucrative than not growing.  In the mean time, more $ for US exporters, which is all to the good.  Nobody in the US will starve as a result of higher corn price, which is all I care about.  The ungrateful foreigners are on their own.  At long last.  The fewer of them who survive the better - fewer enemies to attack us.

Corn futures have been going up for months... due to a combination of Weather, probs in Russia, and Ethanol increase...

Corn is just an indicator of food price increase... but one easy to view.

I've seen numbers that food prices in Egypt have risen more than 20% overall, which in third wold economies is a HUGE part of their living expenses.

And when people start to worry about how they are going to feed their kids, they look for outside blame.. ie, the Government.... and once you loose confidence in the Government?  then change.... looking for a form of Govenment who will make it so you can feed your kids... (see Hitler, Stalin, Napoleon... all came into power at times of economic and FOOD crises).
