Escalation: Pakistan Outs CIA Chief
— Ace

Outs, not ousts. Ousting him would be one thing. Dumping his identity to the jihadist public through the media is quite another.

A CIA turncoat outed the identity of a CIA station chief in, I think, Greece in the 1970s. He got murdered shortly thereafter.

Thus, Pakistan is not merely outing the name of our CIA station chief. They are also setting him up to be murdered, in the grand Islamist tradition of "I'll take this one step and let my jihadist buddies take the next, and then I'll claim I had nothing to do with any of it, and condemn the murder (slightly; with reservations, and fresh complaints about "occupying armies").

So this CIA chief will have to be evacuated ASAP, on threat of death.

To even call this "escalation" is a mistatement. Here's the series of actions so far:

Pakistan creates the Taliban in Afghanistan as a hyper-fundamentalist terrorist-friendly proxy government.

Pakistan supports the Taliban until they take over the country.

The Taliban, most likely with the go-ahead from Pakistan (its patron), invites Usama bin Ladin to live there, an offer he takes.

Protected in Afghanistan, Usama bin Ladin kills 3000 people, mostly American, some foreign, some Muslim.

Pakistan continues supporting the Taliban even as we go to war with them.

Pakistan apparently gives aid and shelter to Usama bin Ladin.

We kill Usama bin Ladin, venturing into his Pakistan hidey-hole to do so.

We note that Pakistan seems likely involved in hiding Usama bin Ladin.

To get even with us for the outrage of protecting ourselves against their murderers, Pakistan outs our CIA station chief.

Anyone besides me notice in that series of actions it's almost entirely Pakistan that's killing and harming Americans? Seems to me we took three corrective actions -- to stop things that shouldn't have been going on in the first place -- and Pakistan gets even via another murderous provocation.

Excerpt at Hot Air:

In a sign of how bad ties are between the two countries, Pakistani media on Saturday once again publicly named the CIA station chief in Islamabad, a breach of both protocol and trust, that is bound to enrage Washington.

A Pakistani TV channel and a newspaper considered mouthpieces of the countryÂ’s military said the ISI chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha had met CIA station chief Mark Carlton to protest US incursion into Abbottabad to kill al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden. CIA station chiefs remain anonymous and unnamed in public although the host government is told.

Earlier, the Obama administration had asked Pakistan to disclose names of its top intelligence operatives to determine whether they had contact with Osama or his agents.

The latest breach indicates that a section of the Pakistani military-intelligence establishment is determined to run the CIA out of the country fearing that the ISIÂ’s links with terror groups and its sheltering of terrorist leaders will be exposed.

This is going to get very ugly. It will be bad for America, but it will be worse for Pakistan.

At some point, they can no longer be permitted to wage a coward's war on their own terms. If they want to ride the tiger, they should be made to ride the goddamned tiger.

But in the Meantime: Surely we have a list of their homosexual ISI agents and generals and fundamentalist clerics. And their adulterers and whoremongers and pedophiles and porn addicts.

Obama should deploy Alinksy's rule against our actual enemies and make them live up to their own rulebook.

22 Our constant obsession with placating the Muslims is completely counterproductive.  The Paki government has two groups to placate; their own radical and rather stupid population, and us.  If their population sees us constantly trying to make nice, then they will be angry with their own government if it isn't aggressive, figuring that their country and ours must be evenly matched, or close to it.  Therefore, why should they be conciliatory?  On the other hand, if we are aggressive and let them know how little we care about what they think, and that their misbehavior has serious consequences for them, the population will get the idea that maybe we are not to be trifled with.  Only then can the Paki government do what needs to be done vis a vis the headchoppers in ISI.

Their rulebook says that leaders who've attained enlightenment (batin—personal revelation of the hidden will inside the Law) aren't bound by the rulebook (zahir—the exoteric form of the Law).

Sharia is taqiyya. It applies to you, not them.

38 I don't think it's as simple as "Pakistan is working against us".  There are different factions controlling different parts of the government.  The goal should be to make the people moving against us meet an untimely end without forcing the rest to rally around the flag.

The big benefit to getting blamed for everything is when you actually start with the "dagger" part of cloak & dagger people think "Yeah, yeah, but we always blame them..."

45 #12 - From WSJ - Dec 10, 2010:

WASHINGTON—The Central Intelligence Agency pulled its top spy out of Pakistan, citing threats to his life after a lawsuit revealed his name and accused him of helping to orchestrate the agency's campaign of drone missile strikes in the country.

Officials said the agency is looking into the possibility that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, the ISI, may have had a role in blowing the CIA station chief's cover, a sign of tensions in relations.

57 >>fused at May 08, 2011 06:08 PM (LawKN) Yea, that's what I was talking about. It had to do with a lawsuit some Pakistani is bringing against the US because his brother (I think) was killed by a drone. Somehow, his lawyer happened to know the name of the CIA station chief in Pakistan and announced it in a press conference. The ISI has been a shadow government in Pakistan for decades. If they are allowed to remain in place we will never be able to win in Afghanistan.

58 We are continually reacting to events in Pakistan, rather than driving them.  We have to put the Pakistani leadership in the position where they must react to our moves, so that we call the shots.  Of course, doing so requires leadership and less time on the golf course, so I guess it's a nonstarter.

76 Would that it was as easy as telling the pakis to get bent and giving them a trillion candlepower sunrise. Except, they are our only logistic link to afghanistan. We could, of course, try estabishing bases in turkmenistan or uzbekistan, but that hasn't worked well in the past...IIRC,the uzbeks tried to raise our basing costs by a factor of 100, so we closed down ops there. Pakistan is our only logistics route to afghanistan. Shutting off aid means we slit the throat of any further plans of operating in AFG, we simply don't have the strategic airlift capability to keep the number of troops we have in AFG supplied. Even if we did have an uzbek or turkmen base, pakistan has the most viable overland routes and, for lack of a better word, infrastructure to support moving the supplies needed in theater. I say we leave afghanistan, leaving a case of bourbon, a stack of porn, and a box of hand grenades on every street corner as we leave, use crop dusters dropping captured coke to cover our withdrawal and keep the natives restless and get them all hooked, burn everything of value that we can't take with us, and when the last man out calls home from an airport on US soil, then we nuke them both, from space. What good is the bazillions we've spent on nasa if we can't get them to re-direct an asteroid with terminal guidance? Not a "global killer" but certainly a "region crippler.". From what I hear, haji has a thing for worshiping asteroids, so it's a win-win.

Posted by: Ace's liver at May 08, 2011 06:24 PM (QgI7g) How the fuck would anyone but the Chinese know? We can only guess. Here's one: Maybe they would like to steer the outcome in some way?

89 As to Cheney ... didn't he announce some months back that his heart disease had entered a new (and likely terminal) phase? A great man, who's done great things for his country. Sadly the Left will no doubt cheer his demise, even the same ones who wrung their hands about Bin Laden getting whacked.

Reason #467 I hate the traitorous Obama-left.

90 Only then can the Paki government do what needs to be done vis a vis the headchoppers in ISI.

Walk down the hall and tell them to be sneakier?

91 small tactical nuclear exchange between two non-superpower countries from becoming a huge strategic exchange

Why would we or the Russians get into it with each other over it?

Your mixing small vs. huge, tactical vs. strategic here.
Tactical would be Pak trying to stop an Indian Tank column retaking Kashmir or the whole after the Pak army failed.  Then who knows?
Strategic is decapitation & disarmament 1st strikes or total city war.
Nobody sane wants any of this.

94 Posted by: Dave at May 08, 2011 06:52 PM (i+n69) I know what those things are. My question has to do with escalation, with limited becoming unlimited. There has never been a nuclear exchange, small or large. No one knows anything about them.

Yeah, "likely terminal" if he doesn't get a heart transplant.  On the plus side for Cheney, even though the transplant list is supposed to be totally egalitarian, wealthy people seem to be able to get new organs.

97 Yeah, "likely terminal" if he doesn't get a heart transplant.  On the plus side for Cheney, even though the transplant list is supposed to be totally egalitarian, wealthy people seem to be able to get new organs.

Is that because they can afford to pay, or have insurance to pay for the incredibly expensive surgery and recovery? I kind of doubt they are bumped up in the queue for the organ simply because they are wealthy.

104 Clueless@105: ItÂ’s illegal to buy organs for transplant, but if you can afford it you can go to where the organs are. That is, some areas have shorter waiting lists than others. ThatÂ’s how Steve Jobs got his liver: he went through the approval process in Tennessee, which has a much shorter waiting list than California. It takes more money to go through the approval process in places other than where you live. (At least partially, I suspect, because of government regulations on the process.) Being able to afford after-surgery health care also affects your chances of being chosen when an organ becomes available. Because thereÂ’s a shortage (at least partially due to the law/regulations), transplant centers donÂ’t want to waste an organ on someone who isnÂ’t going to take enough care of it to survive after the surgery. (Giving your average moron an organ transplant just means two people die instead of one, at least until they come up with Valu-Rite-proof organs.) So, being wealthy definitely helps.

110 ItÂ’s illegal to buy organs for transplant, but if you can afford it you can go to where the organs are. That is, some areas have shorter waiting lists than others.

That's part of it, I'm sure. There are consultants out there who make their living purely through helping wealthy people work the transplant system. Jobs used one to set up his state-hopping strategy.

I think there's more to it than that, though. A guy with a few hundred million can offer to buy a new wing for a hospital. Is he buying an organ? Do lobbyists buy favors from politicians with campaign contributions? Well, technically they don't. But we all know that's what's really going on.

If it was all really above board this kind of thing couldn't happen. The fact that it did, and nobody realized it at the time, says a lot about the system.

115 AceÂ’s liver: yeah, I expect thereÂ’s serious corruption given how important transplants are to the people who need them. I like to say that the free market is less a philosophy than a natural law, like gravity. No law can repeal it; at best laws wield it effectively, more commonly theyÂ’re a disaster waiting for a trigger. (Follow link on name.)

I remember in the Summer of 2008 I became acquainted with a beautiful and intelligent professional woman who happened to share my commute on public transit.  We never talked politics, but right after Obama was elected she asked me one day if I didn't feel like "we were so much safer now".

I asked her why that should be, and she looked at me as if I was a child as she patiently explained to me that the election of a black President who was not a cowboy would change everything.

I thought that being on the other side of 60 would mean that I would never have my illusions shattered again.  Of course, I was wrong - I just didn't understand all they ways in which it could happen.

I love Dick Cheney, I did not know he was terminal unless he got a transplant.  I hope he gets one, he is the best VP we've ever had.  I have FNS on my DVR, I am going to watch now to see how he looks and what he says.

We MUST stop giving our tax $ to Pakistan.  When GWB was POTUS Musharaff knew the deal, if he did not cooperate,  it would be bombed to the stone age.  We have to cut off all money going to them and the Palestinians.  What have either done for us lately? Nothing but out our CIA agent.  Kill the person that outed our CIA agent.  Maybe now Obama could "couragesly" kill him.   I have to think it is a "him" considering we are talking about an Islamic country. I doubt women have rights there.
