Estimated 5.8 5.9 Earthquake Strikes Virginia, Felt In SC and NY
— Ace

I think that 5.8 is a low estimate. I'm down here now and that felt like more than a six.

Its epicenter was a place called Mineral, VA.

A mag 6 in California and a mag 6 in Virgina are not comparable in any way.

It is true that it isn't a huge deal here in California.  There would be very very minor damage.

But as I said above, VA is not equipped to handle this.  Brick construction is a nightmare for earthquakes!  And it is everywhere in DC area.  Brick is essentially a bunch of stacked up rocks.  The mortar is basically non-existent during an earthquake.

In fact, when a 6.0 happens in California, the "damage" the news always manages to find is an old brick wall somewhere.

231 Sorry if its been mentioned,

For those who don't know, scale work on 10's  for example

a 5.8 is twice the size of a 5.7
a 8.0 is 10 times the size of a 7.0
etc..

The system is techincally accurate but perceptually inaccurate, as it fails to convey to people the huge scale jump.  Depending on the location people can get used to 6.0-7.0 and no big death disaster from it then a 7.8 happens and all hell breaks loose and people are confused why the nearly as large were no big deal.

273 I do hope all are ok, as it is a very scary feeling and briefly disorienting

Very disorienting.

To me the oddest thing about them is how "on and off" they are.  I mean, with tornadoes or hurricanes or blizzards or whathaveyou, there's a lead up and a gradual diminution (not quite so much with tornadoes, but still some).  But with earthquakes (small ones) you kind of wonder if it really happened, because there are cues to tell you it did (aside from damage).  Pets are helpful in this regard because they react to it so you know it's not just in your head.

307 #286, My office work is a semi-irregular position for mostly government and large multifamily apartment renovation projects in the metro-Boston area. There isn't enough work in the office to keep anyone below the senior associate level. My freelance work is for corporate or franchise owners of various free standing service stations. Occasionally one of managers or franchise owners will want me to do drawings for their residences as well.

I have to laugh at the AIA/Boston Society of Architect's compensation surveys showing architects earning an average of 75k a year. Half the architects in Boston alone are unemployed. There's no freaking way in the past couple of years average compensation has gone up 20-25k. But these are the same people more concerned with getting new slick waterfront office space instead of helping out their membership. Figures they'd be living in a fantasy land.

Hey guys. I'm just trying to eat my waffle o.k.? Fine. I'll make a short statement. I call on all Americans to remain calm. The earthquake was caused by global warming which we all know is caused due to Republican policies that were in place before I was in charge. I am glad major damage seems to have been avoided. Most importantly. I am glad it didn't screw up my 3:00 tee time. Now if you'll excuse me I have a lesson at the driving range.

Just got back from retrieving my son in DC area. Traffic is BAD (uh, worse than usual). That did scare me.

I finally got why my 7 year old got so frightened. The tards at school spent most of the year filling his head with Haitian earthquake tragedy. He thought he was gonna die.

361 Just west of Charlottesville- loud rumbling/vibrating/rolling- lasted almost a minute. Just crooked pictures and sloshing water in the pool. The dog was acting squirrelly for about 2 hours prior- licking his paws, refusing to come inside until just before the quake began; then he ran inside. There is a gas line leak reported in the city proper. I am about 20 miles west of the the epicenter; the Lake Anna nuclear reactors went into automatic shut down. The cell phones were out for awhile.
Sorry if all of this info has already been relayed- I am the woman who didn't read all the comments today.

I'm here in California. I don't mean to denigrate, but a 5.8 here results in sweeping up the Safeway and mopping the floor.

I see there has been real damage in DC. That's a shame. I hope all of you are safe and well.

370 Felt it up in Ottawa, Ontario.

Felt the initial P-wave for a few seconds before it hit (thought my feet were falling asleep or something very light tremble), then when it hit it felt like someone was shaking the pipes (was in the washroom at the time).  Didn't feel it as strongly as the local one we had last June (which I believe as around a 5.5magnitude compared to this one which was around 5.9) which felt like it was going to shake the roof off, so I guess the attenuation was pretty substantial by the time the waves got up here.

372 dagny, I'm sorry your little guy was scared. Poor fella. My ten year old and her cronies were on the playground at camp when it happened. Luckily her father happened to be in the neighborhood and was able to go over and help calm the kids down. Our house is fairly new (2003) and not one glass broke nor did one book fall off a shelf. Thank God for building codes.

------------

I don'tknow about the rest of the state, but I certainly am.  LOL

Stop the blather about earthquake codes.  That doesn't apply to ALL OF THE BUILDINGS BUILT BEFORE those codes were invented.   They don't retrofit private homes, they retrofit things like bridges, overpasses, government buildings and the code applies to new construction.  How much new construction is there in a state that is already built up?

5.8 or 9 is going to drop some brick somewhere near the epicenter.  It's not going to drop it in another state.  Usually means 'hey look at that liquor store with the bottles smashed on the ground' and perhaps some plate glass ...maybe.

You've got old buildings on the east coast?  Yeah, well what about all of those old buildings in CA.  You know, those turn of the century mission style or Victorian homes?  Ones that were built before the 1906 earthquake?  Ones built as a result of it?  Did they all fall with Loma Prieta or Northridge which were considerably larger quakes? Hell, no.  And there was no code in 1906.  They lost some old buildings with those, but we're talking 7 and more, not 5.8.  Richter Scale is exponential. Do the math.

A lot of those east coast buildings made it through blizzards, nor'easter, hurricanes, you name it.  And a 5.8 shaker is going to bring it down?  Hardly.  More like the chimney might fall.

I say this not to razz you but to inform.  You wonder how folks can live in quake country?  Is your house standing?  Got any damage beyond something falling off a shelf?   Well, now you know.

Breathe easy.  Most aftershocks that you get (if any) will be smaller.  The odds are tiny that anything would be bigger.  Then it's not going to happen again for 50 years. We will all kick the bucket by then.  It's all good.

374 I'm in Charlottesville, about 30 miles away from the epicenter. Lots of shaking, although not all that intense (I think we lost a couple of speakers that were on top of a bookcase), but it was pretty weird. Doesn't seem to have done much damage around here, thank God. Within 15 minutes, we had clients calling us to make sure we and our facility were okay. News spread real fast. Hope everyone else out there came through as cleanly as we did.

I felt it here in Carroll County Ohio....nothing broken or damaged but it was pretty strange.....first I heard my clean dishes shift in the strainer....then the kitchen sink kinda gurgles from the well...then my desk and things on it sharted shaking for about 20 seconds or so...then it stopped....and shook again for maybe another 30 seconds, then it was over!

Strange but cool too....I was hoping it had swallowed DC and its indiginous population, but damn...no such luck, right?
