I'd like to talk about Judith Warner from Time magazine who wrote today that Mz Rosen was right and that Ann Romney should STF up. This is the same Judith that wrote the article blathering on about Obama having sex with her in the shower.
The one who dreamt she was shaving her legs (IIRC) and having Barry do his Mandingo impression? That literally made me queasy to read.

I'm just now taking possession of my father's house since he's going to a nursing home, and I've got a list of DIY projects.
The one that's currently stumping me is: Getting glued-on felt squares off a wooden floor, then refinishing that floor.
Any help, links, etc greatly appreciated.

Felt squares that are used on furniture feet? Use a brand new paint scraper to work them off and then use a floor sander (pretty much the same thing as a belt sander) to remove the old finish and then stain or finish the floor.
That's my best guess having not seen the project.

The one that's currently stumping me is: Getting glued-on felt squares off a wooden floor, then refinishing that floor.
What kind of glue was used? You might try applying warm / hot water to the pads, pad-by-pad, just enough to get the glue to release, or maybe steam from a clothes steamer. Be careful, and do this pad-by-pad, since the wooden floor might try to absorb a lot of moisture and swell or warp.
A woodworking-and-chemical-usage question ... my man-card is still valid ...

Are you talking about those self stick 12X12 felt tiles with the black foam-like backing? Or is it just some random squares?
Well either way, a heat gun will soften the glue, a spackle knife will scrape them up, or at least get them off the floor.Depending on the glue, you may get away with denatured alcohol to dissolve the adhesive, if not, lacquer thinner should definitely kick it's ass.

The whole floor is covered with these squares, like a kind of glue on carpet, ...
... not 50 or so 1" felt squares, in un-hideable locations.
In that case, seriously re-think my steam solution. Perhaps trying with a steam iron, in the remotest corner you can find, is a better idea. Maybe getting one loose will allow the rest to be pealed up. But figuring the floor is 10' x 12', any solution might take far too much time. This might be another exampleof "Don't try this at home" ...
Call a professional or two, probably someone who refinishes floors and has been around long enough to remember the 70's, and see what they say. My psychic aura glows bluer at this suggestion ... something about "70's technology home improvement methods" ... maybe you should call first.
The pros may use steam, but being professionals, might have a professional method that works reliably, and leaves the floor in a good state.
Posted by: Arbalest at April 13, 2012 04:16 PM (KCqL7)
Ah, so it is the dreaded 12X12 self stick abominations. Yeah you have to pull them up and then deal with the adhesive thats left behind. lacquer thinner takes no prisoners when it comes to the self stick adhesive. They make a tool, it looks like paint scraper, but on a pole like a broom. That thing usually will shred the tiles and get them up, but you will have to deal with any leftover adhesive. Keep in mind if they are on a hardwood floor you'll want to do the very least amount of damage so the floors won't have to be sanded too much, so be real careful with any spackle knives or pole scrapers.
I have removed every floor known to mankind, I pity you.

Careful those squares might be Vinyl Coated Asbestos Tile or have Asbestos in the mastic gluing it down. Be sure to keep everything moist as you remove the tiles and use a stripping paste to remove the adhesive. Don't dry scrape anything and be sure to wet mop/HEPA vac everything. This president is no friend of Israel. If nothing else, look at his associates. Louis Farakhan, Jeremiah Wright, his Palestinian friends, his leftist associates are vehemently anti-Israel. He will sell Israel out in the blink of an eye. He is on the muslim side of every issue. Are you blind, man? This Obama is not a friend of the Jews. Wake up, for God's sake. The guy that built our place in Arkansas built a sort of platform frame and laid heat resistant tile in the section I want to have built in bookcases put in.
Trying to decide if it'd be better to just build out the platform to the entire area....and stub our toes for the rest of our lives. Because I don't think the Pergo stuff is as resilient as wood, right? I mean, if we can pull up the platform, I know I'd have to keep a rug there, but I'm concerned it'll just pull up the flooring with it.

Ole and Sven go deer hunting and Sven bags a big buck. He grabs it by the back legs and starts dragging it in. Ole watches for a couple of minutes, then says, "Sven, if ya grab her by the horns, I think she'll drag a lot easier". So Sven goes around to the deer's head and starts dragging it along by the horns. After about 15 minutes, he says, "Ole, she's pullin' a lot easier now, but we're gettin' further away from the truck".

Thats a tough one MissT. Those pergo type floors are usually some kind of veneer on some type of "other than wood" core. If you try to pull the tiles up it may rip the veneer up, and you would have to be careful not to lift the floor. On the other hand, whatever pattern you have is may still be available, and should be fairly easy to change a section if all else fails. No real easy answers.
If it were me I wouldn't deal with tripping over a platform too well. I would napalm the whole area and rebuild it. lol

This actually demonstrates it well. It is behavior that imitates nursing. Clawing Mom's belly stimulates the flow of milk. Purring is a way for Mom and the kittens to hear each other without having sound carry.
The pillow that the World's Smartest Kitteh is is nursing is a good match in texture to cat belly.

The pillow that the World's Smartest Kitteh is is nursing is a good match in texture to cat belly.

Oh yeah, now that you say that it makes perfect sense.
But don't puppies do the same thing to their mom's belly? They don't seem to do it as they age though.

"Romney "would like to see the U.S. Embassy eventually moved to Jerusalem".....why can't he ever be definitive about anything? How the heck did he ever run a company? It's yes or no in business, often maybe is no.
This is precisely the problem people have with Romney as regards obamneycare .....they fear he will say "oh yeah eventually I'm going to address obamneycare, but first I'm going to fix everything else".....in other words, sit on it until it is a done deal so he can then say "what can I do, it's a done deal".

Thanks! I need to look around and see if there are any spare bits in the outbuildings somewhere.
And Tami, I always heard it was a nursing thing, too, probably a comfort thing, like sucking thumbs!

That is just gross. lol
I have to have real hardwood. Yeah, I know how to do them, so its material only for me, but even if I didn't know how to do them, I would learn frigging fast, because there are some nice hardwood floors that are fairly cheap. I did a beauty in my parents house. I think it was like $4 a sq foot, and was the 3" wide planks, not the narrower usual stuff. Looked great.

Yeah, trust me, I know. Mom was a pain in the ass though, she wanted to see it and feel it and smell it, etc etc.

I'd prefer real wood, for sure. Not gonna happen, though, so I am not dwelling on it.
Much.

Does it matter that there is no doorway or rooms or anything? Open floor plan. It'd just be coming out into the middle of the floor, hence the tripping issue.

Pneumatic floor staplers can be tricky. You have to hit it just right and at the right angle.
Other than that, laying a wood floor is tongue and groove, pretty much common sense work. And it looks really nice when finished!

It comes out best when you have the lady requesting said floor help you decide how to place the boards. Of course you know you stagger the lengths but the color can have a slight variation too so you don't want a patch of color when you are done so she can yell, cause she will. Instead you want to spread the off color boards throughout the floor so it looks deliberate. Trust me, any woman who tells you to "just lay the floor".....doesn't realize that she wants input and the wise male worker bee encourages said in put up front so whatever happens, however it turns out, it's been a joint effort.

mr cassie, berserker did this for a living for years, and the lady to whom he is referring is his recently deceased mother who knew her own mind and didn't need to spoken down to.

Wasn't trying to insult anyone. Sorry your mom is deceased but you have the wonderful memory of having made her happy.

There's an article on huff poo poo too, the commenters are already saying that romney's credit card paid. Reminiscent of GWB.
"The General Services Administration
official tasked with organizing a now-infamous $822,000 Las Vegas
conference plans to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights ahead of a
scheduled Monday grilling on the Hill."
