— DrewM The GOP is sending out a trial balloon tonight by sending Ryan out there. It puts the "Roadmap" front and center. If it goes over well, if not...Plan B. Or something.
From Ryan's speech.
FISCAL CHALLENGE AHEAD: “Our nation is approaching a tipping point. We are at a moment, where if government’s growth is left unchecked and unchallenged, America’s best century will be considered our past century. This is a future in which we will transform our social safety net into a hammock, which lulls able-bodied people into lives of complacency and dependency. Depending on bureaucracy to foster innovation, competitiveness, and wise consumer choices has never worked – and it won’t work now. We need to chart a new course.”**********
ROLE OF GOVERNMENT: “We believe government’s role is both vital and limited – to defend the nation from attack and provide for the common defense … to secure our borders… to protect innocent life… to uphold our laws and Constitutional rights … to ensure domestic tranquility and equal opportunity … and to help provide a safety net for those who cannot provide for themselves. We believe that the government has an important role to create the conditions that promote entrepreneurship, upward mobility, and individual responsibility. We believe, as our founders did, that ‘the pursuit of happiness’ depends upon individual liberty; and individual liberty requires limited government. Limited government also means effective government. When government takes on too many tasks, it usually doesn’t do any of them very well. It’s no coincidence that trust in government is at an all-time low now that the size of government is at an all-time high.”
**********
LIMITED GOVERNMENT: “We need to reclaim our American system of limited government, low taxes, reasonable regulations, and sound money, which has blessed us with unprecedented prosperity. And it has done more to help the poor than any other economic system ever designed. That’s the real secret to job creation – not borrowing and spending more money in Washington. Limited government and free enterprise have helped make America the greatest nation on earth.”

Obama's giving a speech at some point as well. Something about more spending, er, "investments", a fake spending freeze and Sputnik.
Rumor on the street is we'll be live-blogging this thing tonight, so be sure to stick around for that.
Oh an good news/bad news thing...
Bad news, a cable network will carry Michelle Bachmann's "Tea Party Express" fundraiser response.
Good news, it's CNN so no one will see it.
Seriously, Ryan is a star on this stuff. He should be the face of the GOP tonight. Not only do we not need a divided message, we don't need a whole "GOP/tea party split" storyline.

One of the excerpts from the SOTU "show".
By the time IÂ’m finished speaking tonight, more Americans will have lost their health insurance. Millions will lose it this year. Our deficit will grow. Premiums will go up. Co-pays will go up. Patients will be denied the care they need. Small business owners will continue to drop coverage altogether. I will not walk away from these Americans. And neither should the people in this chamber.
So... you're going to call for repealing Obamacare so that these things won't continue to happen?
/btw, wasn't Obamacare supposed to solve all that? Amazing are the revelations a mere year will bring!

In this case, whatever she can add to Ryan's speech, or even simply affirming what he said, pales when compared to the "fracturing GOP."
And as DrewM. says, she should have declined. The Tea Party is not very good at strategy when it comes to the press, so she should not have felt compelled to accept their invitation.

If you figure in that Obama would love to possess the command economy (along with its science apparatus) that the Soviets had, this metaphor makes perfect sense to him! The Soviets succeeded with Sputnik* because the Soviet government completely directed the research, not some evil Business or Corporation.
*Not to mention they got a head-start with the Germany rockery research they "procured" after the War.

The MFM will pan Ryan's speech, and give it short shrift. Even after the fact news articles that purport to be about Ryan's response will consist of 80% Obama, 10% Ryan, and 10% snarky comments about Ryan.
Even if there's no obvious Tea Party/Republican messaging split, the MFM will invent one if necessary.
Sarah Palin will be mentioned. The darling little droolers that make up the left/MFM just can't help themselves.

I love Bachmann but dislike what she's doing here; however, the leadership has said they're okay with this and she's said she will not one-up Ryan. Per The Corner, she also gave him her endorsement and the two of them apparently talked yesterday. Sounds like it will be more coordinated (even if it is accidental) than anything.

Were it simply interviews on TV, that would be fine- desireable in fact (assuming she can go 5 fucking minutes without sticking her foot in her mouth). What she's doing here is giving the official Tea Party (Express) rebuttal in tandem with Ryan's Republican response.

Whoever suggested (yesterday, I think) that what the SoTU needs is for the Repubs to be packin' those little portable nautical air horns and hitting the button every time the Traitor-in-Chief pushes the bullshit meter into the red zone.

Really? Remember that we are talking about the Response to the State of the Union.
I can only remember two such speeches. One could be titled "Creepy Kaine eyebrow" and the other could be titled "Tarnished Jindal's halo".
Seriously, the Ryan speech will be only for wonks and for the record.
Unless it's Michael Bay presents Tim Pawlenty presents Paul Ryan, I wouldn't get my hopes high.
Posted by: AmishDude at January 25, 2011 03:38 PM (BvBKY)
I know they were baffled about it, which is why they've been sending lots of people out there to say "Ryan is the official response" and have people praise his work-- which is ironic when you think some of the leadership think Ryan is an overzealous young upstart. That's actually why I'm more concerned about this 72hr window in which the Dems will try to frame the Rs as wanting to kill grandma. They cannot let the Dems get out in front on this one.

Even though large tracts of America and many old and famous States have not yet fallen into the grip of Obama and all the odious apparatus of Leftist rule, we shall not fight nor resist.
We shall submit in the end, we shall kowtow in DC,
we shall yield on the seas and oceans,
we shall yield with waning confidence and growing cowardice in the air, we shall defend their odious agenda, whatever the cost may be,
we shall yield on the beaches,
we shall yield on the landing grounds,
we shall yield in the fields and in the streets,
we shall yield in the hills;
we shall ever surrender.
I hope that any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act. I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: "I have nothing to offer."
We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of prostrating and of surrendering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to capitulate utterly, on sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to capitulate utterly to a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim?
I can answer in one word: It is submission, submission at all costs, submission in spite of all temporary successes, submission, however long and hard the road may be; for without submission, there is no purpose to the Republican party. Let that be realised; no survival for the United States, no survival for all that the United States has stood for, no survival for the urge and impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward towards its goal. But I take up my task with non-existent spine and loose sphincter. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. At this time I feel entitled to claim the aid of all, and I say, "come then, let us go forward together into the glorious socialist utopia."
And never in the field of political conflict have so many been screwed so much by so few! Power to the people! Allahu ackbar! And pay your motherfucking taxe, you deadbeats. Some of us have third vacation homes with sweetheart mortgages that we need to pay off.Posted by: Paul Ryan at January 25, 2011 03:41 PM (xy9wk)

Saw a similar topic today at Crains Chgo Business entitled, The End of Entrepreneurship. Some excerpts:
I genuinely believe that there is an existential risk to the culture of entrepreneurship that is part of the essence of America. It’s not something that will happen tomorrow or the next day, but it’s a combination of medium-term trends which, taken together, make it hard for me to see where the next generation of entrepreneurs will come from....I recently was asked to give a talk on entrepreneurship at the University of Illinois... I was trying to find the room where I was supposed to give my talk, but everyone I spoke to kept asking me if I was going to the investment banking conference. Finally, for reasons of curiosity as much as anything, I succumbed to temptation and stuck my head into the meeting room of this august body. Somewhere between 100 and 150 suited, scrubbed and name-tagged would-be-bankers were within and I, my jeans not qualifying me for entry, was quickly ushered back to my original destination. My group was only 30. I didn’t miss the suits or the nametags, but I did miss the numbers. Students clearly think that the way to get rich is in financial services, not in entrepreneurship... for a ratio like this to hold – for 150 would-be bankers to profit on the transactions of 30 would-be entrepreneurs is clearly unsustainable. Unfortunately, government guarantees and subsidies (let’s call them what they are) of an unproductive financial sector are creating this distortion.

The spin that the media puts on the SOTU will give Obama a temporary spike in the polls, but beyond that, who gives a sh*t?
Improving economy in 2012 = Obama win
Economy tanking in 2012 = Republican win
Obama's current rebound in the polls reflects the fact that the economy has - at least temporarily - bottomed out.
If we start seeing states defaulting and a bond market crash, watch Obama's poll numbers. No amount of hand holding and "bipartisanship" will save them from going in the shitter.

Yeah, my son has been in Dutch Harbor and met Capt'n Sig and Andy and of course the Discovery Channel film crews are up there, too. His cutter has been out to sea quite a bit, and takin' some hard hits from weather. He emailed me that 30-35 foot seas and he keeps getting tossed from his rack in the night. He was raised in Michigan so the cold isn't bothering him in the least. He's usually stationed in San Diego and hates the heat.

Wrong; I have. Not so much recently, as I'd prefer they'd both take a lower profile, as they're currently doing more harm than good.
I'm very much glad that Bachmann won re-election as she has a pretty solid voting record, but (like Palin) she's more likely to drive people away than bring them in to the Republican fold.

Posted by: Reiver at January 25, 2011 04:00 PM (RFTUX)
True. It simply isn't my favorite part because that's the sort of talk that goes right over the heads of about 52% of the nation. "Limited government" is SIX SYLLABLES OMG. "Free enterprise" does have a Stark Trek word in it, but it's lost in the context.
Posted by: arhooley, conflicted Californian at January 25, 2011 04:01 PM (gF0jC)
Are you kidding? That would be the best possible outcome we could hope for. Keith Olbermann getting the Dem nomination for Senate in CT is, literally, the only way that seat will ever go Republican in the next 20 years. Either Simmons or McMahon (to just name two obvious suspects) would beat him.
It would be the Donk equivalent of us nominating Crazy Train in Delaware. I pray it happens. Oh it would be so sweet.
Shit, even if he managed to WIN he would be The Gift That Keeps On Giving in the Senate. Imagine Alan Grayson on steroids, every day...for six years.

I'm thinking they're banking on the 4-points approach instead of the "wow them with math" one, though I did see some math in there. But it's rather difficult to guess what else he's going to say. If he goes for 4-points, I'm guessing it's an adaption of his "we have a great choice" speech.

And then when a couple of steadfast conservatives decide to speak out, oh heaven help us, on the same night, it's somehow crass and uncouth, there's only a limited number of conclusions I can make.

Sorry dude, sometimes you just have to take one for the good of the team.
Aw man, I genuinely *THRILL* to the idea of Senator Olbermann...think about it. Think about how much fucking FUN we would have forcing every other Democratic Senator to agree with or disavow his latest atrocity: "So, Senator Warner, do you agree with Senator Olbermann's contention that Kelly Ayotte is 'nothing more than a mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick' or not?"
He would be worth millions of dollars in negative advertising for the GOP. He simply wouldn't be able to help himself. (Which is, of course, why I doubt he could ever win an election in the first place...Connecticut is a place that cares about the 'breeding' of its politicians, to put it politely.)

251 Yep. It's like believing the meme about Obama being a good speaker, or McCain being viable, or McCarthy being a douchebag, or The tet offensive being a defeat. It's "accepted". OMG, the Palin-hate is a "consensus" let's bash the deniers, it's birtherism I say.
I personally don't think any woman can win yet because the playing field isn't level on how they are thought about and talked about in the media. I would rather have her as an Obi Wan directional figure. But I refuse to follow the consensus that Chi-town Jerry likes to promulgate--that she is despised by a majority of americans--it's just not true.
When she fucks up on a policy position and takes a libtard stance, then I'll decide she's harmful and not before.

You apparently dislike him a great deal. As for the auto bailout,
I personally think he did it because of where he's from, the same as with Bachmann and her farm subsidies. In other words, politicians sometimes vote for their districts, and I will hold that against him. With regards to the other 4 votes, he's a "pick your poison" type of person, so that's how he voted. But how do those negate the entire rest of his record? You act like he sponsored ObamaCare.

She ran for Congress during the most recent cycle in CA-37, IIRC.
Angela McGlowan is another black female conservative (she's on Red Eye a lot, for those who watch.) Ran for the GOP nomination in MS-1, did respectably w/33% of the vote, but lost. That's okay though, because the winner (Alan Nunnelee) ended up knocking off Travis Childers anyway.

I think the commentors at hot air jump on the Palin threads because Allah bashes her at every opportunity. I quit going there because his bashing of Palin, Beck, and Jesus made me so pissed I would want to make outrageous defensive statements too. The comments are crazed pro-Palin but in reaction to Allah's constant and undeserved ridicule.
Except that he (or anyone else) gets accused of "bashing" her merely for repeating a mildly negative story or accusation about her, even if it was quoted only for the purpose of defending her. Same here on AoS.

The first comment was just a statement that the media would be sure to mention her. Can't tell if it was a 'like' or 'dislike' statement.
It devolved from there. When is the last time you came into a thread without jumping into a bashfest or starting it? You may think those that you call 'bots make Repubs look bad, but the same can be said for smartasses that think they know everything.
For the record, I'm not a 'bot. I like her, but I'm not of the HotAir variety. I just don't cotton to people that think she or her supporters are fair game to be maligned, because some people think they know every damn thing.

Seriously, Ryan is a star on this stuff. He should be the face of the GOP tonight. Not only do we not need a divided message, we don't need a whole "GOP/tea party split" storyline.
Bollocks. There are no "stars" and I have no faith in any "face of the GOP." Ryan is an establishment Republican who sold out conservatives on every major financial overreach and takeover vote for the past two years. Bachmann's voice is an essential hot poker up his and every other GOP ass, reminding them of why they're even in the majority right now and what awaits their cowardly and clueless asses if they forget. I've no doubt her message will largely buttress theirs, and even if she takes a harder more demanding line, it still cannot hurt, i.e., still sharpens the distinctions between the GOP and the Left. No downside, all upside, and the more voices the merrier.
