— DrewM As Sheriff Joe would say, this is a Big F'n Deal.
The eagerly awaited study involving more than 15,000 newborns and babies in seven African countries found the vaccine cut the risk of being infected with the malaria parasite by about half and the chances of getting deathly ill from an infection by more than a third. While far below the protection provided by many widely used vaccines for other diseases, the results were hailed as a major advance toward one of the most elusive goals in medicine.
...
Caused by parasites that are transmitted by infected mosquitoes, malaria sickens more than 200 million people each year and kills nearly 800,000, mostly children in Africa. Controlling malaria has long been one of the top goals of international public health authorities.
It's cost about $500 million to develop which is an amazingly small amount of money compared to the good it will do if this pans out. About $300 million came from the Gates Foundation and the rest from government grants evilllll big pharma (I wonder what the Occupy Wall St. crowd will say about that).
No word on whether or not the vaccine causes retardation in presidential candidates but making that kind of dent would be a huge breakthrough in public health.

If only there was some chemical you could use to kill the mosquitoes that carry this foul disease then we would be on to something.
Sorry, forgot to Massengill.

Studies have shown that inhaling a mixture of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% trace gases will do that.

As a big government scientist myself, I will tell you that if you have a tightly focused program with a clear goal like this, I would much rather have a Bill Gates in charge than the folks I work with. Nothing wrong with those folks, but they have different skill sets. Gates, whatever his other faults, is about bringing a product to market. I just hope this isn't the Vista vaccine.

Why not just develop and deploy automatic micro-laser systems that are programmed to target mosquitos? They wouldn't solve the problem at first, but as more are deployed over the years, we'd get more and more mosquitoes all the time.

I hate to say this.. but the West keeps providing more and more ways to keep Africans dying from diseases, only to see the populations rise by millions.. millions that the land cannot sustain.
We should be giving birth control along with the life-saving meds. I know that sounds cruel and heartless, but is it any worse than seeing the lines of starving refugees and dying, emaciated babies?

Tangentially related, but I remember when a pistol-wielding nutjob charged the stage on which Prince Chaaaaahles was speaking. The guy stuck his hand in his pocket and looked disdainfully in the nutjob's direction, but didn't flinch or duck. Charles is an idiot, but that, my friends, is what made Great Britain great.

Human population gets controlled in three main ways. We've made great inroads on plague and famine. The third, however...well, let's just say our innovations go in the other direction...

Actually, this helps with the overpopulation problem. The single most effective form of birth control ever found is wealth. It works so well that the wealthiest peoples on the planet are in danger of going extinct for lack of interest in having children, as noted at length by Mark Steyn in 'America Alone.'
High infant mortality is very expensive. It is no coincidence that the West started to get wealthy as it got better at securing food supplies and adept at preventing common causes of childhood death and disability.
When infant mortality decreases the level of investment per child grows and things like basic education become more common.
I'm currently reading 1493 by Charles Mann. It goes into depth about how the import of malaria (among other diseases) made the early colonization period in North America a very rough slog. It also created the conditions where importing African slaves became valuable in spite of moral objections. African slaves were actually more expensive than imported Europeans or enslaved Indians but they had the unbeatable feature of resistance to the form of malaria most affecting the region.
(Interestingly, it is also noted the Indians in the north were less inclined to the practice of slavery while those in the South were much more inclined to it, possibly influencing the southern colonist to take advantage of that before the African slave trade started crossing the Atlantic. A precursor of the Mason-Dixon line existed before Europeans were involved.)

A) The seizures tend to be self-limited and non-life threatening. MUCH less serious/dangerous than contracting malaria.
B) There are actually approximately 150 strains of HPV. Of these, about 15 are considered "high risk" for cervical, anal, and/or oral cancer. Of those 15, TWO strains, namely 16 and 18, account for 70% of cervical cancers and 85% of anal cancers; HPV Type 16 accounts for virtually 100% of HPV-associated oral cancers.
Gardisil is effective in preventing infections from HPV Type 16 and Type 18. It also prevents infection from HPV Types 6 and 11, which cause 90% of genital warts. Besides being eyesores, these are also thought to be precursors to many of the cancers NOT caused by Types 16 and 18.
Gardisil, like any other human endeavor, is not perfect. But it's a damn sight better than doing nothing at all.
Except for that retardation thing...
