— Ace In this outbreak, of course.
Firefighters gained ground on Wednesday for the first time in their days-long battle against a large and deadly wildfire southeast of Austin, Texas, officials said. The 34,000-acre (14,000-hectare) Bastrop County Complex fire, which has forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people in the rural community, was about 30 percent contained and that number was expected to grow throughout the afternoon, said Mike Fisher, the county's emergency management coordinator.
"We're feeling like we're gaining enough control that we're not going to lose a lot more acreage today," Fisher said. "Perhaps today, we'll have the perimeter secure and the fire will not get larger."
The Bastrop fire, one of nearly 200 fires that have broken out across Texas in the past week, has killed two people and claimed 785 homes, the most houses ever destroyed by a single fire in Texas history, the Texas Forest Service reported Wednesday morning.
Firefighters who have fought the blaze since Sunday were helped overnight by decreased winds and cooler temperatures, conditions expected to continue on Wednesday, officials said.
If you want to help, there are lots of ways to do so.
The below video was posted by the Texas Parks & Wildlife agency.
Video shot September 5, 2011 on the north edge of Bastrop State Park. All but about 100 acres of the 6,000-acre park have been blackened by fire. Firefighters have been battling blazes for 3 days.
I honestly do not think Perry should attend the debate tonight. Even if firefighters are getting a handle on it. Things can change fast, as that video shows.
I know his opponents are counting on him to implode for their benefit (actually, he's likely to deliver the knockout, but keep hope alive, I suppose), and will attempt to claim that he's hiding, but actually, I think he should be in Texas for this. The governor is supposed to be on the job during a crisis. Going to the debate elevates the presidential campaign over his actual job.
You know how he loses the debate? Winds whip up and the fire spreads while he's in California.
I suppose he's already en route, or about to be, though.

He's done most (if not all) of the administrative stuff he can do, and anything left really is stuff he can do by phone.
I expect he'll shuttle out there for the debate, and then head back as quickly as he reasonably can.
The thing is, with a wildfire, you can't make your choices dependent upon what it might do, because it could do anything. He's done what he can do, he's seen to it that the response is coordinated and FEMA (as much as I hate they exist) is now diverting resources to the problem. He's even working with Fort Hood (who have their own fire to deal with) to get some of their unused assets for the Bastrop fire (I heard that last night, and haven't heard an update since).
Going to the debate is not just leaving Texas to the wolves, and he can get back in town long before daylight if his presence becomes necessary.

I hate to say it, but I agree with this.
I would prefer the governor be here for this. It may seem silly to a lot of keyboard commandos, but the truth is that governing a crisis like this is not easy, and being there probably has an impact on effectiveness in so many ways it would be impossible to list.
But hey, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. If Perry ducked out, he'd be called a moron debater who is chickening out of a battle of wits.
He did return to Texas when the fire got quite bad, and I greatly appreciate that. These fires are so bad. My house has a little ash on it, but that's nothing. A lot of people have just had their lives completely messed up. Thousands of kids are living in gymnasiums or wherever.
Hopefully Perry set up some kind of system for his subordinates to handle most of the contingencies, authorized whatever funding is needed, and that's that.
The democrats are whining that this proves conservative leadership is bad, because Perry cut firefighter funding before this disaster. I think that's ghoulish and proving wrong anyway.
Perry in the debates will be very difficult to beat. The fact he's actually leading, and the others aren't, will be painfully obvious.

Since fire-fighting efforts move to "don't lose ground" at night, there won't be anything he can do (substantively or symbolically) tonight.
Now, if he goes to the debate and then hits the campaign trail, I'll probably be miffed. But going to the debate tonight, and then coming back tonight or first thing in the morning should be fine.

It's not that Perry is the superhero. He's the governor, and the state is suffering an emergency. It's good that he came back and did his job, and a lot of idiots attacked him for doing so.
It appears that the tide was turned.
Texas has handled emergencies very well for the past ten years. Only a moron would pretend Perry doesn't deserve some credit there.
I don't know that Perry being here would make a different now, but I am pretty sure him returning when he did actually gave him a better feel for the situation, and enabled him to make a lot of decisions more accurately.
You kinda have to be here to really appreciate the scale of the fire east of Austin. It dwarfed the skyline.
Anyway, I was glad he returned, and if had been up to me, his debate debut would have been after these fires had completely abated.
I guess the long running meme against Perry is that other people get the credit, but that's BS. The buck stops at his desk. Sure, he's got a lot of other people doing the work. Some of them are probably total badasses, too. So what?

OK, you have a good point. I probably stand corrected. There's not a whole lot he can do tonight anyway.
But a whole lot of people were whining that Perry came back at all, claiming he should have made that forum thing, and mocking the idea Perry can do any good from Austin. I think these people don't really grasp what an emergency this is. My house has ash on it, but my in law's house, five hours away (in Texas) also has ash all over it. This is a widespread situation.
Would the Californian government have been able to get this under control with low drama, after austerity leadership cut every agency (including fire departments where possible) to remain solvent? Hell no.
This is a good example of the conservative way of running a government, and I think it requires the leadership to come here and do their jobs to some extent. Doesn't have to be 24/7, and sometimes there's not much point, but this is the exact opposite of the Obama golfcourse method of leadership.

What people may not realize is the increased price of beef and other goods as the result of the fires: months ago stockyards were packed with ranchers selling their stock as they could not feed them (no hay). Americans will feel the fires soon in their grocery bills. Grains have also been burned. Wildlife is suffering (as deer abandon their fawns as they have no milk for them due to no water or food). These fires are horrible and, unless I am wrong and missed something, Obama refuses to give Texas the federal aid Gov. Perry requested.

The weather isn't that unpredictable. Current winds in Bastrop are 7mph and expected to remain the same for the next 12 hours. That's about the same in Texarkana. In Magnolia, wind speeds are below 5mph.
Indeed, the really unfortunate thing is the weather is likely to remain exactly the same for the next 3 days. If the ground had some moisture, it would be nearly perfect. But what we need is a change in the weather, and that would take some changes in the wind.

it's a relatively cool, calm day today - not much chance of the winds acting up again, the weather pattern has changed. The winds on Sunday were frightening, but that was the backside of Lee. (Texas tastes the backside of Lee? Cruel Irony!!!) Knocked the top out of one of my trees, but no other damage, fortunately.
Also, as of this afternoon, it looks like most of the fires across the state are coming under control.
Of course one can't say enough how sorry we are for all those people who have lost homes, pets, even some lives. The guy who lost his collection of 175 cars, including 12 classic corvettes and a shelby cobra, really hits me in the gut! He had them stored in a couple barns outside Bastrop.
But it truly is a tragedy that this hit Bastrop State Park - the Lost Pines area is one of the most beautiful state parks Texas has, it's hard to imagine almost all of it burned.
