— Ace Great ad.
They definitely hit the theme of not working terribly hard. They touched the other theme I like -- that Obama's abdicated and is forever voting present -- but obliquely. I don't think you can do everything in one ad, of course. There'll be time for that other one. That's a more serious, more text-based (as in flashing headlines) sort of argument.
By the Way: The media is still deliberately snapping Obama's head inside of halos. They just ran this one with his Libya remarks.
They really believe he's their Personal Jesus.

I want an ad in which lots of ordinary joes answer the simple question, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?" A few images of $4.50 gas prices, shuttered businesses, headlines about lousy schools, and some random potholes.

Leave the unicorn's jugular alone!

I am pleasantly surprised that it came from the NRSC. Was it an in-house effort or did some enterprising conservative send it to them?
Seriously, I see much better ad ideas here than I do being circulated at any official Republican organization. Most of those are extremely lame.

It's a great ad. No, it doesn't get very deep. One of the brilliant things about Obama is that they are relentless. Explaining just how wrong they are on any specific issue takes a long time because they continue to make it worse and worse and worse.
You can't do a thorough job. It's going to be challenging to avoid the temptation of righteously explaining the full depths of this administration's lawlessness on any one issue. For each one, they have a simple and coherent response. Yeah, 99% of the time it is very dishonest and unfair, but it's masterful tactically.
We go on for hours explaining the nature of the debt crisis, from entitlements to PAYGO lies to Obama hiding interest payments to Obamacare to 100 other things... they reply with 'we inherited a deficit from Bush and hope to reduce it after the economic crisis we inherited from Bush'. That's extremely unfair. Bush's debt being so low, and Obama's debt extending the recession, etc etc, but again, they have something to respond with that is simple for idiots to absorb.
You can see this approach to everything else they do. They have a lie about American guns flooding Mexico. Even their own ATF screwup allows then to cite evidence of guns being bad. It's aggressive and unfair.
In each case, the right does have the ability to simplify the message. Some ads have to really avoid tempting points in favor of a general theme.

I actually don't think the ad was so great. Nothing the DNC couldn't top and nothing to change any minds.

I've been out, so forgive me if this has been quoted 17 times already, but damn!
Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), who asked Clinton about the War Powers Act during a classified briefing, said Clinton and the administration are sidestepping the measureÂ’s provisions giving Congress the ability to put a 60-day time limit on any military action.
“They are not committed to following the important part of the War Powers Act,” he told TPM in a phone interview. “She said they are certainly willing to send reports [to us] and if they issue a press release, they’ll send that to us too.”
Quoted at Patterico's.

Nice ad. I would have liked to have had a clip of him sneering about how we can't keep our houses at 70 degrees or ride around where we want next to that gas pump, though.
"Let's hope they continue to go for the jugular."
I agree, joncelli, but we've got to keep it light, too. "The devil, that proud sprite, cannot bear to be mocked." Cankles knew it when she ran against Little Black Jesus - he's got a glass jaw the size of the First Wookie's ass. If these ads can get people to laugh at the Kenyan Kocksucker every time he flaps his gums, he's toast.

Those are kinda boring now. Instead they should ask people are you better off now then you were under Jimmy Carter?
Either that or do a Reverse "Morning in America" ad. Call it "Evening in America". Get a bunch of people to talk about how it feels like we have Jimmy Carter again. That it seem like the sun is setting on America; it's wealth, power and prestige, and how Obama seems to think it's his job to insure we go gently into that good night.

But I also found myself wondering why the ad was too long and why I was thinking "well maybe he's not as bad as I thought" cause the republicans have no one to beat him, no one.
The first ad is standard republican fare. The second ad will go viral on you tube and they've lost before they pick a candidate.
I know you guys will get mad at me and don't want to hear this but I was wondering how he'd reel them all in and if this is the first ad, the republicans lost before they began.

Fake Ad Makes Fun of Obama
Spot starts off like most campaign advertisements but becomes extremely sarcastic almost instantly. Ending's totally over the top
Posted by: Tami at April 01, 2011 08:48 AM (VuLos)
I think it would be easier this time to trigger the kind of panic buying that created the lines at gas stations back then. With the draconian EPA regulations on underground tanks do we not have fewer gas stations now?

I recently left a voicemail with the Hopenchange Customer Service Desk about the Skittle-shitting unicorn I was supposed to receive, because all I got was a donkey in a dunce cap, and those weren't skittles. I just sits there, looking from one side to the other and crapping on the floor. Frankly, it's starting to creep me out. I haven't heard back yet.
Posted by: Fallen Sparrow at April 01, 2011 08:50 AM (l48cv)
That actually does make tactical sense if the goal at this point in time isn't to change anyone's mind about Obama, but instead to get the donors to start opening their wallets.
I'd like to see the ad showing every single instance of the Obama camp playing the race card in response to legitimate criticism (from the "beer summit" to Obamacare opposition, to Bill Maher, etc). Never going to happen, of course, but I think being falsely accused of racism is something that really rankles the average American.

the theory is that it was all on credit cards. I have friends who ended up giving way more money than they would have if they were asked for a donation and gave one time. Every time the campaign communicates with you they ask for even as little as five bucks. Everyone gave on average 25 bucks but if you click that button every time the campaign asks you to, you end up not realizing how much you are giving until your credit card statements start to come in. It is a very clean way of using a small staff very effectively. No checks, so you don't need to worry about them bouncing. I heard they even managed to get it all from the credit card companies. I'm not sure what you mean by burn rate. If you mean the credit card company charge then you don't realize that it was suspended. It only applies to small business people. everyone else gets to dicker with them to get it down or gone.

It is rather frightening how easily people were sucked into his campaign. The clue is the quote by G.K. Chesterton at the end.

I don't think you can do everything in one ad, of course.
Seems like something of an understatement. I'm thinking of making a list of the biggest things the "anti-Bush" had viciously attacked his predecessor for, and then turned around and did, himself.
1) Iraq? No difference. 2) Rendition? Sure! 3) Afghanistan? Actually copied Bush's "surge". 4) Gitmo? Still open, but if they're acquitted, we'll keep'em in jail anyway! 5) Deficit? Tripled!!! 6) Debt? Doubled! 7) Attacking oil-rich Muslim country that hasn't attacked us? Check! (And you gotta love the hypocracy of his acting in a manner that Mr. "Constitutional scholar", himself, had proclaimed a president doesn't have the authority to do.)
That's without really thinking about it very hard. I really think this stuff would make for a great series of comedy sketches.
Another interesting thing about the Libya thing is that it disproves the stupid canard about how pundits on the right were criticizing Obama 'cause they're racist. I see a large fraction on the right who would normally be screeching about his having acted without consulting Congress, but have left him alone because they actually LIKE that Obama has acted against Qaddafi. They have a thirst for vengeance without, I'd say, really thinking things through as far as where this is headed. At least, for once, there's actually something that people on both the left and right are agreeing on.

but it isn't working at all then. I thought the second one was pro obama. And the first one sounded like an obama ad not a republican ad.
I watched the first one and the second one and then listened to them and came to that conclusion.
they are preaching to the choir and they need to get to the non believers.
btw, anyone with a remote can skip ads and that's what people do, maybe they watch it once, maybe so that means you have one chance, one chance to make an impression.
bush with his little groups of moms online was very effective. I don't know why the republicans don't go back to that.

It is not a defect that the ad fails to convince low info voters or can't work in a blue state. It is not meant to do that.
BTW, if you think you can make a better ad, do it. You can rip Obama statements on your computer and put something together. It's a lot harder than you think.
Posted by: Dustin at April 01, 2011 09:51 AM (Q3nWV)
The question is -- will this ad ever air on TV?
Something tells me no. While it gives some repubs a warm fuzzy and the NRSC are going around giving each other high fives because it's being viewed by 000s on various blogs frequented by people who wouldn't ever vote for Bambi, it won't mean jack diddly until an ad like this reaches a national audience.
OK, for some of you, my bladder is drained and your cornflakes are soggy.

It means that some of my liberal relatives will watch it and get suckered in before they realize it is satire.
I am of the "you have to sneak up on them" mind set.
curious, if you thought that first ad was pro-Obama you do NOT need to be making ads. You need to take a class in interpreting media or something.
Posted by: Miss Marple at April 01, 2011 10:21 AM (Fo83G)
Not really. We expect some red meat ads directed at right wingers. That is part of a sane approach for the Republican party.
They can't all be directed at Obama's loyalists or even moderates. Sometimes, it's good to acknowledge things from the right wing POV, too. We're the ones who donate, after all. We're the most important part of the party for the next 12-14 months.
But I'm not being snarky to challenge you to make a better ad. Someone out there probably can.
