The flash mob does not act violently, but instead smiles and laughs as it steals from the 7-11.
One thing about that "not violently" -- it is often claimed that thieves or vandals are not acting violently when they direct their mayhem against property.
But violence is implicit here: What is the point of a mob but to tell the property owner, "If you attempt to stop us, we have the numbers to beat you savagely"?
That threat is always present, and of course why bandits have long grouped together.
The shop worker here did not act to stop the thieves, but stayed behind the cashier desk in safety. That is the whole point of mob action -- intimidation.
The only upside of this is that, assuming they used Twitter to organize the mob-loot, there should be some record to pursue.
A polls says that 48% expect spending cuts to lead to violence -- but we've had no real spending cuts yet (quite the opposite, given Obama's 2 1/2 year spending spree) and yet we already have growing disorder.
Crime is not a "response to inequality." It is a response to the opportunity to commit crime, and the likely prospects of gain without penalty (or a penalty so lenient it is barely worthy of the name). It always has been.

This has been happening a lot in Chicago apparently, also in Philly.
There is a racial element to it too unfortunately.
Mayor Michael Nutter of Philly gave a scathing speech just recently over this to the "black community".

I have been seeing this a lot today but as I recall we have been having these flash mob attacks here in the U.S. long before the rioting in the U.K.
Besides that, the rioting in the UK is more of general "Rodney King" insurrection than this flash mob shit.

See your point, but if the alternative is to have your stock stolen by a mob couple times a week (with an inevitable escalation into property destruction), I'm guessing a couple owners might not really care about any potential blowback. Easier to beg forgiveness, and all that.

I think the best way to deal with this is for 7/11 and other franchises to install front doors that lock electronically.
Most of these stores have hard to break or bullet prove glass and an enclosed cashier.
Why not have doors that lock, that way the flash mob is stuck in the store until the police come.
Other than that, I'm not sure. I'm as big a fan of using firearms to defend oneself and property as anyone here, but something doesn't sit right with shooting a bunch of unarmed kids.
I know they are committing a criminal act, shop lifting and petty theft, but I don't think that's really a legitimate reason to shoot them. If they're trying to steal from the cash register, or hurt the owner then fine. Self defense is self defense, but I don't think I could bring myself to shoot them if I were in that same position.
Maybe a taser? or something non lethal?

Whether or not it is inspired by the London anarchy, I think if there had been a ... robust response to that, it might have somewhat discouraged similar lawlessness* here, and vice versa.
I actually hesitate to saw lawlessness, because this kind of thing, disregarding property rights and public safety, is much more corrosive to a functioning society that breaking some of the myriad of laws that have crept around society, like illegal lemonade stands, speeding, etc, and it's a travesty that the same word encompasses both.

That was my first response as well - that's nothing that a shotgun can't fix. I know that there are some convenience stores/gas stations that have a corporate policy that you don't try to stop a robbery, mainly due to the whole uh oh we're gonna get sued by the families of those poor poor people who couldn't help it that the goods jumped into their hands like that.

If you notice the police spokesman said 'they were in control of the store for a minute or so'. When employees are present and you take 'control' of a building you also are holding someone against their own will. Some serious criminal charges could result ie: kidnapping ect.
My office is in Montgomery county aand the demogrphic is a 180 from Philly hence the good little kiddies didn't have a real thug in the group.

Yeah, I don't know.
I guess I would differentiate between this type of mob actions(petty theft) and say what happened at that Fair in the midwest.
If people are physically attacking you, then shoot away. I concur with that.
If you're in physical danger or geting attacked, then by all means shoot.
I'm simply saying that if I were a store owner, I don't think I could bring myself to shoot an unarmed kid lifting a pack of doritos or candy. I'm not trying to say it's wrong, i just don't think I could do that.

Understandable. We're all coping with the Obamapocalypse differently. Mine is with a joke and an eye towards where the shotgun is kept. I find it comes off better than just talking about use of the shotgun; tends to make good people needlessly anxious.

There was like a20 year period where this community didn't have a grocery store because no one wanted to open one there, because robbery and petty theft aren't profitable to the person getting held up or stolen from. Really, some level of violence is the only effective deterrent against this type of mob, and the longer you wait, the more severe the level of violence required. A lack of response by the police and a bystander attitude from the community will inevitably lead to the shooting death of some of these youths.

I used to live in DC. The local Safeway was pretty much strongarmed to stay open on Capital Hill if they wanted to keep their other stores opened in the District. Where I live(this was a few years back) a group of the same people kept hitting the same drugstore over and over. The police did nothing. On the 3rd visit the thugs were so cocky they threatened harm to the owners wife and kids, on the 4th visit the owner had a shot gun behind the counter and shot 2 of them in the store and followed a 3rd down the sidewalk and shot him in the back, killing him.
The police charged him with murder and a local jury delivered a NOT GUILTY verdict.

By out of their element I meant the area where this took place is very affluent. I did some reading and found this happened in Germantown which is very close to Philly where the real thugs breed.
Mongomery County covers the Main Line in Metro Phildelphia including Valley Forge. Many fmilies with roots going back to the founding of this country live there.
I am not looking to get into child psychology on this. Crime and punishment suits me fine.

Have a look at the Census Bureau's demographics on Montgomery County and its bordering neighbor to the east, Prince George's County.
PG is 20/65 white/black while Montgomery is 58/17.
I am surprised PG has a 20% white population. They must be the ones living in the east of the county. Yeah, I know the drill, I live across the river in Fairfax. We get lots of visitors from both DC and PG on the weekends. Seems our shopping opportunities are better.

No, wilding was a NYC thing where packs of young men of certain ancestry, after a parade celebrating said ancestry, would walk through a giant park in the middle of Manhattan groping and assaulting. The cities are returning to what they were in the 70's - for all of the younger folks here, let me tell you that NO ONE wanted to be caught dead in a city. They were giving apartments on West End Ave away for $1 (if you would just take over the crushing maintenance). For the same reason, people didn't want to live or work in cities that were out to drain every penny they could in taxes.
This is how things were until the latest urban rennaisance, starting pretty much the day the Trump Tower was completed (a bit of luck on Trump's part) as people who had never really dealt with the shit of the cities moved back in. Well, that flow is about to be reversed as people head back to the suburbs and rural areas (very possible now because of remote access and the like).

I live in a place that the police come to calls late or never, and I don't even call anymore, and often have to decide what to let pass and if something is a place to take a stand.

Instead of asking why these thugs commit crimes, ask why you and other law abiding citizens do not. It's not just knowing the difference between right and wrong, it's not just behaving in a morally upright way - it's also because the upright have a healthy fear not only of punishment but, more importantly, of shame. They care about embarrassing themselves, their families, their community. These mobs? They've turned all of that on its collective head: they've made up their own rules about what's right (meaning "I get what I say is mine no matter who I have to take it from, directly or indirectly") and what's wrong (virtually nothing except what they consider any action that denies them their "rights") and they have no shame whatsoever and, worse, they believe that their behavior is (perversely) to be admired because they get immediate gratification from their peers for this. Imagine how different this scenario would be if these people had been raised in stable homes with a mother whose married to the father.
