Flashback: Romney Wasn't Always Firm on Immigration
— Gabriel Malor

I know, I know. Pointing out that Mitt Romney flip-flops like a fish out of water is no big news. It would be more surprising, frankly, to be able to point to an issue on which he hasn't held more than one position.

I was starting to think that issue was immigration. One of the few things that I've heard people say Romney has been firm on is immigration. And, in fact, folks have been contrasting Romney's supposed hard-line stance on illegals with Rick Perry's more "nuanced" approach.

So I thought I'd check. It turns out Romney wasn't nearly as troubled by the Bush-McCain-Kennedy Comprehensive Immigration Reform POS as the rest of us.

Here he is in 2005, saying that it was not an amnesty and that its path to citizenship was reasonable:

I think that an amnesty program is one which all of the illegal immigrants who are here are now citizens and walk in and get your citizenship. What the President has proposed and what Senator McCain and Cornyn have proposed are quite different from that. They require people signing up for a, well registering and receiving if you will, a number, a registration number, then working here for six years and paying taxes. Not taking benefits, health, Medicaid, food stamps, and so forth. Not getting benefits. And then at the end of that period, registering to become a citizen or applying to become a citizen and paying a fee. And those are the things that are being considered, and I think that those are reasonable proposals.

Romney started saying in 2007 that he opposed the path to citizenship and the McCain-Kennedy amnesty proposal. There's the expected flop.

What does he really believe about immigration policy? I'm sure he'll tell us again.

7 But what really gets my goat is nobody is talking about this shit in the MFM........yet. The MFM blasts every front runner so far EXCEPT Romney.

One has to go to conservative blogs to find Romney's record.

To be fair, and I'm not a Romney guy, this is not a flip-flop.  This is changing an opinion once, which is fine as long as the change is in the right direction.

For instance, had you ever, in the past, held a more-liberal view, and then had your eyes opened?  I know I have.

...OK, that might work for anybody else, but not even the spirit of intellectual equinimity saves me from laughing my ass off while trying to say that.

18 Are we rockin' this election, or what?

In the sidebar, there's a VDH column saying what we all know, which is that the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure has always been a SCoaMF, and we get to choose between two items of Damaged Goods (Perry and Cain), a lazy blowhard (The Newt), two Certified Crazies (Bachmann and RON PAUL!11!), a guy who was stomped in his own state (Santorum) and...Mutt Romney, who, if his "policies" were a computer program, would be a random number generator.

Yay for us.

So far, I'm sticking with Damaged Goods. To give Osama Obama another four years would be like opening the bomb bay doors on the Enola Gay: we might have 30 seconds of peace and quiet, but the explosion will inevitably follow.

29 I never understood that conservatives prefered Romney to McCain in '08. Sure, McCain is a NYT pandering, progressive Republican, but even he had a few long held believes conservatives could agree on (abortion, hawkish on national security). With Mittens everything is fluid and negotiable.

Now that everyoneÂ’s had a good nightÂ’s sleep, I hope we can all put this Cain for President thing behind us.  Mitt is still a squish, Perry canÂ’t talk and Newt has too much baggage.

31 this is getting embarassing, the Romneybots should just come out and admit that they support Mitt because he's the best case scenario in electability, they'll take flak for it (not from me, I think it's an understandable position), but at least they'll make more semnse then trying to explain his flippity flops.

36 I never understood that conservatives prefered Romney to McCain in '08.

I think it was a combination of two things, (1) People did not know his record as well as they do now because conservatives were rooting for Fred Thompson and had not taken a close look at Mitt. and (2) McCain had gone out of his way to piss off conservatives in the past. So even though he was less liberal than Mitt on some issues conservatives hated him.

A pull from that Nate Silver column:

Still, the door is at least theoretically open for Ms. Palin, Mr. Christie or even Tim Pawlenty to run. And it wonÂ’t close anytime soon: California will not vote until June.

I don’t mean that entirely as a joke. It’s been a long time since we had a brokered convention. But if the nomination were stalemated after the first dozen or two states had voted, or if it seemed as if an “unelectable” candidate were in danger of being nominated, a candidate like Mr. Christie could potentially enter the race very late, demonstrating his popular support by performing strongly in late-voting states like California, Ohio and North Carolina and then winning the nomination as a consensus choice on the floor of the convention.

Yay!  Christie is going to save us from Romney.

Look there are plenty more debates for Perry to burnish his "slick" credentials. Look at everyones record.

He by far has the best RECORD. Obviously he has persuasive skills otherwise he would never have done such a good job in Texas.

I can't believe that just because the guy cannot debate, that people are writing him off! His interviews are great, his speeches are great and he is very articulate in those settings. Just because he can't do the one minute gotcha crap at the debates does NOT mean he wouldn't be a great President. He says what he means and means what he says.

49 re: dealing with a potential Romney presidency

1) Work like hell to elect as conservative a Congress as is humanly possible in '12 (as if you were electing one to keep Barky in check another 4 years). Do I trust McConnell and Boehner to pull Mitt very far rightward? No, but hopefully they'll be enough Tea Party types in Congress by then to do it whether those two want to or not and, even those 2 will pull Mitt further right than they would the Marxist-in-Chief if he gets another 4 years.

2) Remind Mitt repeatedly that if he misbehaves too badly he'll get primaried in '16 and/or face a 3rd Party challenge from the Right (and start laying the groundwork from the very start of his term so that it's actually possible when the time comes). He doesn't give a rat's patootie about what people on the Right think, but he'll care about getting re-elected.

3) Pray that only liberal SC justices retire over the next 4 years.

The heartless comment makes flames come out my eyes because a.  it violates the do not insult the base to its face rule and b. because I am sick of that crap from the other side, I do not need to hear it from someone purportedly on my own.

Seriously, I want to sit all the candidates down and remind them, via gentle boot to the face, that they are asking me to give them a job, not deigning to allow me the great pleasure of voting for them.  When asking for a job, it is generally considered merely polite to not insult the persom from who you are seeking that job.

He ran a conservative "think-tank" and internet site. (Which I signed up for and still get e-mails from him). His major function with the site and the org was to sell books.

The site has since became his campaign site.

I wonder how this would fly for Perry: He points out the flaw in immigration law as the stupid SC decision that misread the plain language of the 14th Amendment and that ever since that decision, we've been inundated with illegals exploiting it, resulting in a big part of our deficit by allowing illegals to obtain benefits that were previously reserved only for true American citizens.

...and subject to the jurisdiction thereof. That's what was ignored by the Supremes.

This is plain as day, even to this Moron. If you squeeze out a kid here and you're not an American citizen, your kid isn't a citizen either. You're both still subject to the jurisdiction of your native land. Essentially, you carry your citizenship with you wherever you go, it's not dependent solely on where you were born.

Um, no, I would not.  I think one of the major problems we are facing is the permanent political class.  Not running for another office is a positive, not a negative to me.  Before the Romneybots flip out, yes, that is a point in his favor for me.

And just sitting around?  I was unaware that those books he wrote just appeared ex nihilo.  Plus there's the lecturing and whatnot.  YMMV as to the value of that, but I do not view Newt as having just been sitting around.

If the GOP nominates this RINO Romney then I'll be voting for Obama next year, hell, I'll vote for Obama in 2016 too. Far as immigration is concerned my purity of conservative idealism is as follows: I want less government. Thus I want the federal government to deport each and every one of the 14 million illegals in this country. I'm for the rule of law. Thus I want illegals to not have any right whatsoever to contest whether they're entitled to stay. Get rid of 'em immigration courts, asylum, and such, we don't need to worry about technicalities. Round 'em up in the middle of the night, pack the trains, and ship 'em down to Costa Hondura, or wherever the hell they're from. I'm for less federal spending. Thus I want the Feds to build a fence along the entire border with Mexifornia. Build that f'n fence and spend less money dammit! Most important, I believe in the Constitution. That's why we should eliminate this birthright thing. A kid gets born here and one of his parents is an illegal the kid should be the first one of the lot deported, dammit. Makes no difference if one of his parents is an actual U.S. citizen, you fornicating RINOs. Illegal is illegal. Deport 'em all. Spend less money. Reduce the government. Build the fence. Then deport 'em again, just to make sure. Cain-Gingrich-Palin, '12. It's my way or the highway, punks.

There's a lot of projection on the "realist" side of the GOP camp. And just as much stupidity as on the purity side.

If issues really don't matter, the easiest way to secure the presidency to your side is to simply switch sides. There's a legitimate question raised by 'purists' - how much can you deviate before you are unacceptable? To a group of posters here, there is literally no point where you are not >>>obligated<<< to support a Republican. There's also a contingent that seem to see who the 'purists' like and decide, reflexively, that that person must be unacceptable.

Everybody says they would elect a ham sandwich over Obama, but lately I think people are relishing voting for a ham sandwich as some kind of weird establishment of 'cred.'

Well yeah, except in order to "get in line" one must admit one is here illegally.  That's kinda like drug dealers that want to become honest going to the police to sign up for a neighborhood watch program.

That's their problem. There are a lot of people, including Mexicans, who followed the rules, paid their fees, waited, waited, and waited some more before finally getting their approval to immigrate. Any kind of short cut for illegals is a slap in the face to those who followed the rules; furthermore, it will not solve the problem but will instead encourage more rule-breakers.

However, I am willing to be magnanimous and grant that if said rule-breakers were to come forward, pay a hefty fine, and demonstrate that they have not violated any other laws while being here illegally, then I would allow them to stay BUT there would be no special pathway to citizenship for them. If they wanted citizenship they would have to get in line. And this would not be enacted until we started enforcing current laws and enacted tougher laws to punish the employers.

Well, yes.  But they're that way because they've had everything handed to them on a silver platter (compared to what their lives would have been in their home country, anyway), and never had to pay for it, really.  Mom and Dad may have had a very good work ethic, but Juanito y Juanina only saw Mom and Dad cashing that State check, and going to Medicaid Providers, and abusing the Emergency room.

Then, at school, they were catered to and spoiled because it wasn't "fair" to make them speak and learn in English, or to expect them to behave themselves.

So, as grown-ups, they're just like the OWS crowd- except smart enough to know they're moochers.

Yes, I live in Texas and deal with these kinds of people virtually every day.  Why do you ask?

It is not the "all Cain all the time", it is a combination of "Romney is a flip-flipper, but get used to it because he is inevitable" and "Perry screwed up in the debates and blew it". It makes no sense that Romney can overcome everything, and Perry can't overcome anything. Other than here with you guys (my imaginary friends), nobody I know has watched the debates. My 4 kids are aware of the Cain debacle, and 3 of them think he is guilty. The other has no opinion (possibly because he is my only son), and they all are in the Ron Paul camp. what I am most concerned about, though, is that all this talk about Cain gives the MSM cover to ignore Fast & Furious, Solydra, and Corzine. Corzine should be huge, because he was considered for Secretary of Treasury, but the whole thing seems like a footnote to Cain.

No need for the US to deport all the illegals.  They are the equivalent of squatters in our society.  Deport them as we catch them in the normal course of enforcing the current laws as written.  Deport them for criminal/violent acts other than being here illegally.  Any felony, fraud, or upon 3rd misdemeanor.  Many others will self-deport.

The ones who stay and don't commit anti-social criminal acts go so far to the back of the line that there is a gap between the forward part of their cluster and the end of the line.

209 That poll is the latest Ras poll the key to that was in the internals. It said 95% of the respondents (in SC at least) believed that the allegations were another Anita Hill type smear job.

IOW they did to believe the allegations. The polls were also BEFORE Cain falsely accused the Perry camp which will piss a lot of people off. As Cain continues to flounder on this issue that 95% will start to rapidly change their minds.

It will be interesting to see the next non-news poll done in a few more days.

I don't believe that.  It's been covered pretty thoroughly, so people know about it.  I think what's happening instead is that he's getting a pass on his "handling" of the situation, and people are taking a "wait and see" approach to the allegations.

If even one of them proves to be substantial and have some corroboration (even if it turns out to be a "grey" case), I think that support will evaporate.

I would be shocked to find that the ultimate R nominee didn't receive 99.9% of the votes on this forum, whoever we end up with.  We're just talking about our preferences.

Perry > Gingrich > Romney

Don't get me wrong, i know ginrich is a hack, but so is Romney. I just prefer Gingrich's hackery to Romneys.

Also the Perry immigration thing doesn't bother me so much. I'm a 1,000 miles away from the border and the only time I see hispanic people are when I go to a Mexican restaurant. So it's easy for me to be a hardline immigration hawk. It's not so easy when you share your entire southern border with Mexico and have a state made up of a large percentage of Mexicans.

Besides, as Gabe has pointed out above, it's not as though Romney is actually to the right of Perry on this issue. He just pretends to be.

Mitt has created pirvate sector jobs, Obama hasn't

Mitt knows how to turn things around (companies, olympics), Obama hasn't

Romney's had surplus, Obama's had new record deficits

we can start there

There is a poll over at hotair via headlines saying Cain is not hurt since this whole media kerfuffle. It's one poll but eh, as long as Romney does not get the nod who cares. He is shit

Were you seeing the same poll I was?

A Quinnipiac poll launched before the scandal broke and ending Monday had Cain at 30 percent among registered voters, up from 17 percent in early October

At 23 percent nationally, Cain is neck-and-neck with Romney (24 percent) atop the GOP field. Taken after the scandle broke.

Not sure how going from 30% to 23% is "not hurt".

Also:

At the same time, there is clearly a risk to CainÂ’s campaign should the allegations stick: Sizable numbers of Republicans (37 percent) and GOP-leaning independents (42 percent) see the allegations against Cain as serious ones. In this combined group, Romney is well ahead, with 31 percent support. Cain slips numerically into third place, behind Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Posted by: chemjeff at November 04, 2011 09:15 AM

My only beef with Ace's coverage of the Cain issue is this: he immediately jumped on the bandwagon of assertions, allegations and rumors being spread by Bullshitico and by "people he knows," instead of calling for names, dates and specific incidents. He then followed up by trashing anyone -- me included -- who insisted that anything less than facts is unfair to Cain and to us.

If -- IF -- it turns out that someone actually comes forward and sheds the cloak of anonymity while offering some kind of proof that there was harassment, then I agree that Cain is toast and should drop out.

Otherwise, we are allowing the bar for candidate smears to drop lower and lower, just as the Democrats want it.

For me, at least, this is not so much about Cain as it is about a general erosion of standards.

And yes, in the interest of full disclosure, Cain and Perry remain my top choices. Flawed, yes, but IMO our best opportunities to start putting the destruction wrought by the Osama Obama regime behind us.

Isakson - 53.2%

Cain - 26.2%

I don't remember it being a big deal, but the Wiki entry does mention Cain getting accused of being pro-affirmative action. Apparently, the strategy against Cain was to accuse him of being a moderate rather than a conservative.

I'm not a Newt supporter either, but I do love his FYNQ attitude. He doesn't accept the premise of idiotic questions by debate moderators and isn't afraid to bitch slap them.

Neither one has a snowball's chance in hell but both possess admirable traits lacking in the main contenders.

Instead of tearing these guys down we should be demanding others, like Perry and Romney, strap on a set of balls using Cain and Newt as examples. Instead, we simply accept them as they are and instead viciously attack those showing at least some core conservative principles. That 'aint no path to a conservative (or even a GOP) victory.

Which, as his supporters will tell you, is just like Reagan and has always been a conservative position that even the TEA Party has adopted . . . .

Now, if you are one of those who think we need to fence the entire border--you might reconsider you party affiliation, you'd be better served on Ron Paul's staff or hanging around with the John Birch Society.
Let me put you some facts: 1) It isn't happening, 2) It will never happen, 3) It isn't practical, 4) It will never be practical.
And if you point to the Great Wall; congratulations! You're historically and geographically illiterate.

Me too.  Probably because I'd already done my homework on the whole thing.  Caused me to rethink my own views on the subject.  Hey, if Texas wants to do it, so what.  Plus Perry doesn't believe in amnesty, so I'm cool with him on immigration.

Plus, living in California where they actually want to give taxpayer's money/preferential treatment (ala Brown's Dream Act) to these people and not American kids does give me a different perspective.

The anti-Dream act crowd here is working to get a proposition on the ballot to overturn this shameful giveaway.  And I think it will pass ... people are pissed.

I think people who got all miffed at that remark weren't leaning for Perry no matter what they say.  I think they're mostly Palin/Bachmann peeps.  These are the people who went to Cain, IMO, not Perry people.  I think the Perry supporters suspended their support and are in the undecided category, with some going to Newt.  But Cain supporters?  Most defintely the majority are from Bachmann and Palin camps.  Hence, the knee-jerkiness and the "it just feels right" mentality.

It's because so many of the Cult of St. Sarah jumped on the Cain bandwagon (especially after the filing deadline passed in a couple of states), and they can never, ever admit that any flaw pointed out in their candidate (first St. Sarah, and now St. Herman) could possibly have any validity at all, and if you report on it, you're a mean poopie head.

Your behind the times. One of the Palinista explained yesterday that those pesky primary rules would be changed to allow Palin to jump back into the race.

Those rules, put in place by the establishment, and can only be changed by the establishment, which, last time I remember, the Palinista complained that the estbalishment hates Sarah, but the establishment is going to change the rules for Sarah. Or something.

Posted by: Mallamutt, RINO President for Life at November 04, 2011 09:14 AM (OWjjx)

There are two camps the Palinistas are split into. The first is the Cain camp, witness Hillbuzz as Exhibit 1. Why? I don't know. They flirted with Perry, then jumped whole hog on Cain. The second is the camp that still thinks Palin will get in. They also largely support Cain as they see a fractured conservative vote will be united behind Palin riding in on her shining white snowmobile.

As for those who actually genuinely support Cain? I know, I know: If only we would have ignored all this the Democrats would never, ever have used it. And then we could be spending our time talking about how great things will be under the Cain Presidency. He'd probably pay our mortgage and buy us gas and give us jobs and get countries to respect us again and restore our civil liberties and . . . .

263 25 I'm to the point that I look at it this way. All we will be doing in the next Presidential election is removing Obama from office. I can't see any of the potentials as actually leading on any major government reforms. That leadership will have to from congress if it comes at all. If it don't we'll just be treading water till the next election. At least we won't continue to make things far worse.
Uplifting isn't it?

I believe Cain, Ron Paul, Perry, and Newt will genuinely TRY to lead major government reforms. What concerns me is a Congress led by Squishes may not be willing to go along with it (remember Bush's attempt to get SS reform rolling and what happened?) It's important to rid ourselves of Boehner and McConnell as leaders and get principled CONSERVATIVES as the House and Senate leaders (or at least see those people put into the leadership chain).

My opinion on Romney is he won't try to lead reforms. I believe he will simply go-along-to-get-along and always keeps his eye on ways to get re-elected, rather than principle or what is right for the country. I HOPE I'm wrong.

This election is more important than getting rid of Obama. The country is on the brink, and I don't think another W-type presidency will prevent the collapse.

Gabriel, don't waste your time knocking Romney....the only thing you ever need to do is every three or four days create a two sentence post with the headline - ROMNEYCARE, are you really going to vote for this guy?

Nothing else matters.  He should be in the political trashpile of history as far as Americans are concerned.  Require me to buy insurance, sheesh who the hell does he think he is, Stalin?

266 Romney focuses on the future. Petty losers are focused on tired, ten year old so-called quotes. Romney Today: "Romney said he'd also eliminate federal subsidies for Amtrak and reduce federal support for the National Endowment for the Arts, The National Endowment for the Humanities, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Some programs would be easy to cut because "I just don't like them," Romney said, while others might be harder but worth it. He specifically referenced the $1.6 billion in federal subsidies for Amtrak. He also called for cuts in foreign aid, noting that the U.S. provides $10 million to one of its creditors, China. "It's not very much money but just the idea just galls me," Romney said. Arguing that fiscal responsibility is the "moral choice," Romney offered as an evidence of his belt-tightening expertise the early days of Bain Capital, an investment firm he co-founded. Employees worked out of an empty warehouse in a supermarket parking lot, and Romney said he required them to pay for the pizza and Coke served at board meetings."

Back in the day, mandates were hip and cool AND conservative, just ask the R-bots, they will be happy to tell you so.

Romney hates the Flat Tax as well.

He doesn't think the tax system is as broken as it is. Of course, as he raised taxes in Mass. to help balance the budget, I wonder just how aggressive he'd be in renewing the Bush Tax Cuts he opposed or even reducing the tax rate period.

271 Romneybots are going to be in for a rude awakening.

They've got no idea what's coming. The MFM have been game planning him for years now, and it's going to be like the Raiders facing Gruden in the Superbowl, except more lopsided.
