— DrewM I was pretty bi-partisan last night and I stand by it. I would have never thought in a million years President Obama would have the brass balls to send a team of Navy SEALs deep into Pakistan to get bin Laden in such an up close and personal way. But in the cool afterglow of bin Laden's death, I'd like to remind folks that not everyone was always so excited about killing America's enemies
Behold a breathless Keith Olbermann in March of 2009 pimping the rantings of admitted liar Sy Hersh.
Our fifth story on the Countdown tonight: As we reported on this newshour last night, investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, claiming to have uncovered a covert executive assassination ring that reported directly to Vice President Dick Cheney’s office. A reminder -- if one is needed – that in 1976, Mr. Cheney was the chief of staff to President Ford. Meaning, by the time Cheney was back in the West Wing, it appears he had either forgotten about his own boss’ executive order or worse, he had decided to ignore it.Mr. Hersh is making the revelations at a forum in Minnesota two nights ago. The topic: America’s constitutional crisis. Hersh saying of Mr. Cheney and his inner circle, quote, "They ran a government within the government." Adding, "Eight or nine neoconservatives took over our country."
HershÂ’s bombshell allegations about the assassination ring, the result of reporting for a book he says might be still a year or two away from being published. Hersh is telling MinnPost.com in an email after the event, that the disclosures are, quote, "not something he wanted to dwell about in public."
The toothpaste, however, is already out of the proverbial tube here. When the discussion touched upon the abuses of executive power, Mr. Hersh asked how these things tend to happen and whether they continue to happen to this day. In his reply, the reporter describing a secret commando unit officially called the "Joint Special Operations Command."
HERSH (audio clip): "ItÂ’s a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently. They do not report to anybody except in the Clinton, I mean, in the Bush/Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. They do not report to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or to Mr. Gates, the secretary of defense. They report directly to him.
They are not -- they have absolutely no -- Congress has no oversight of it. ItÂ’s an executive assassination wing essentially, and itÂ’s been going on and on and on.
And just today in The Times, there was a story saying that its leader, a three-star admiral named McRaven ordered a stop to certain activities because there were so many collateral deaths. ItÂ’s been going into, in -- under President BushÂ’s authority. TheyÂ’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. ThatÂ’s been going on, well, in the name of all of us."
The Joint Special Operations Command...Hersh and Olbermann's band of rogue assassins was the lead command in the death of bin Laden.
Were it not for this high-value target, it might have been a routine mission for the specially trained and highly mythologized SEAL Team Six, officially called the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, but known even to the locals at their home base Dam Neck in Virginia as just DevGru.This HVT was special, and the raids required practice, so they replicated the one-acre compound. Trial runs were held in early April.
DevGru belongs to the Joint Special Operations Command, an extraordinary and unusual collection of classified standing task forces and special-missions units. They report to the president and operate worldwide based on the legal (or extra-legal) premises of classified presidential directives. Though the general public knows about the special SEALs and their brothers in Delta Force, most JSOC missions never leak. We only hear about JSOC when something goes bad (a British aid worker is accidentally killed) or when something really big happens (a merchant marine captain is rescued at sea), and even then, the military remains especially sensitive about their existence. Several dozen JSOC operatives have died in Pakistan over the past several years. Their names are released by the Defense Department in the usual manner, but with a cover story -- generally, they were killed in training accidents in eastern Afghanistan. ThatÂ’s the code.
Olbermann (link to his site) is over the moon excited about Obama getting bin Laden. I guess he was against JSOC killing terrorists before he was for it.
Michelle Malkin has more on the left's hypocrisy on "secret prisons".
Almost all Americans are rightfully excited about bin Laden's death but let's not pretend all of us were always in favor of it. Hacks like Olbermann only celebrate American victories when it fits his political narrative., It's disgusting and it shouldn't be ignored.

The people pushing this are the biggest Obama fans already. I don't know if this will change anyone's mind in a voting booth come November 2012. After we're done celebrating OBL's death, we have to get back to bigger issues like deficits, debt, inflation, energy, unemployment, etc., that are much more important to this country long term.

Drew - the problem in my mind on the is issue is the left vs. right mentality, that being that the left just think things should just magically happen nice and clean while the right knows that in order to get things done you have to slap some faces and dunk some heads etc...
It's like that in every aspect of their thinking be it the economy, social issues and on and on it goes.
I have always maintained that liberals could not exist without us while we would actually flourish without them.
Just a bunch of kids really.

Wonder if Olberdouche has enough honesty to modify his fanciful narrative of last night, when he falsely claimed this was all due to the return to "within-the-law" intelligence procedures instituted by his glorious Messiah, when it turns out this was a victory 10 years in the making, including info gleaned from sources held in Gitmo.
Not likely.

All of this will be forgotten, in the same way the treachery of the left has been forgotten when teaching the cold war history.
The way the history of the cold war is taught now, is that everyone wanted the Soviet Union to collapse. Which, as we all know, is complete BS.
This too will be conveniently forgotten by the media and most historians.

Would have been real easy and safe to missle the site. Sending a Seal Team in to shoot him in the head, confirm it was him, then dumping his body into the sea so there can be no shrine to OBL was the best choice. Good job Mr. President.

“As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Massachusetts Army National Guard, I have service obligations that I fulfill each year. Following in the tradition of other lawmakers who have completed their military service requirements overseas, this year I have requested to conduct my annual training in Afghanistan,” said Brown in a statement. “Doing so will help me to better understand our ongoing mission in that country, and provide me first-hand experience for my duties on the Senate Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs committees.”

I wouldn't be so sure Obama sent the SEAL team in explicitly. I would be more inclined that someone in the chain of command saw the opportunity and took it, while Obama was available for risk-free credit.
The last time anything remotely like this happened, the SEALs wound up being prosecuted, IIRC.

What is it about his decision that everyone thinks was so damn hard?
The risk was that we could have had 4 burning helicoptors and a dead Seal Team, no OBL or a living gloating OBL. The comparison to Carter and Desert One would have been unavoidable. This was absolutly the best scenario we could have hoped for. Give Obama credit, this was way better than a drone strike. The stature of the US got a much needed lift yesterday.

Proof which we apparently won't be shown.
But the main reason it was not a hard decision is that Obama couldn't care less about the men who executed his orders. He thinks they're beneath him, not being Hahvahd men and all.
So fuck Obama. No bravery involved. And, if he used last night's address as a campaign speech as has been reported, I hope when he's back to being a regular citizen our soldiers give him a piece of their minds.

Bwahahahahaa, he was playing golf yesterday while this was happening.
Obama and his minions in the press are going to be basking in the glow of our Seals and intelligence officers work for quite awhile. The press is already writing stories that makes it sound like Obama was on the first helecopter in leading the charge.
That isn't going to make gas go down or people start hiring. The more Obama takes credit for the hard work and bravery of others the less people will think of him. He can't help it though, it's the way he is.
He did a good thing in letting the Bush policies go forward and finally getting the scum muzzie. He should acknowlege that and let it go. He won't though and neither will the press.

How many times do I have to say this? It was reported all over the place last night that they initially discussed taking him out with bombs, but that wouldn't necessarily give them proof. That's why they put boots on the ground. Fucking proof in case deWon needed it. He knew it wouldn't be enough to say we bombed him and we're pretty sure he's dead.

Hey, DrewM, I defended your decision to say Obama's move was brave. But a lot of us disagree. And we've given great reasons why.
Obama assassinated Osama Bin Laden on the same weekend that he apparently also tried to assassinate Q'daf in an operation that was supposed to be a no-fly zone and for which there was no Congressional approval (or consultation). He succeeded in offing OBL using the tools he and his cronies have been trying dismantle for years. Tools Bush put in place.
We are not safer today than we were yesterday. Whose fault is that?

This was a perfect way for The Vapid One™ to end the comparisons with Jimmah. He gets to officially say he succeeded where Cahtah failed.
That's significant, to be sure. But that bar's awfully low.

Bush's policies finally came to fruition despite President Obama.
If future President's kill Quadafi and any other leaders that Obama, the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner decides to start a war with without any justifiable reason, we'll give Obama the credit.
And if Obama gets credit for Osama, blame him (which they should be anyways) the next time they're bitching about $4 / gallon gas.
