— Ace How big is this? Not sure; if it's a few scattered thousand, the thug idiot Mubarrak doesn't have much to worry about.
Police used tear gas and batons today to battle thousands of protesters who marched in a "day of revolt" demonstration in a rare show of political defiance in Cairo, the BBC reports. The anti-government protests, including calls for the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, erupted only a week after an Internet-inspired street campaign drove President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia from office.
Mubarak has tolerated little dissent since he came to power in 1981. Today, however, security police initially showed unusual restraint, but switched tactics after the protest turned violent, the Associated Press reports.
Here's video of a truck coming out to spray a water cannon at protesters; it shows up at 1:15.
Here's tear gas being used against protesters.
Egypt's blocking Twitter, which is being used by protesters to spread information and make plans.
More: Directly modeled after the Tunisian uprising. Including the self-immolations.
At least six young Egyptians have set themselves on fire in recent weeks, in an imitation of the self-immolation that set off the Tunisian unrest. Egypt has forbidden gas stations to sell to people not in cars and placed security agents wielding fire extinguishers outside government offices.

Democracy in Egypt would be a bad bad thing.
We have a dilemna in many middle eastern nations. The pro western autocratic leaders are the only think keeping their nations from becoming theocracies, however at the same time the authoritarian leaders are the very thing keeping the societies and economies stagnant.
If there were elections in Egypt, they would be undoubtably won by the Muslim Brotherhood and their first act would be do undo the peace agreement with Israel.
We would be back to the 1950s and 1960s. All the progress would be undone in one fell swoop.

Egypt has produced M1A1 tanks under license for a decade (~500). The muslim brotherhood is having nocturnal emissions over the prospect of getting their hands on those. And as has been hinted at in earlier comments, democracy is synonymous with islamification accross the Arab states, imo.

The problem here (and I admit, its a conundrum) is that W was right- people will tend to choose freedom. Presuming it is the mullahs/Islamists who are agitating for this, they're playing with fire. If history repeats, they'll be fine, but it's still playing with fire.
If enough of those protesters really start to believe this whole "equality and freedom" thing (they probably won't), they'll turn on the mullahs, too.
Based on the current culture, though, I think Constitutional Monarchies are the way to go (quickly, Saudi Arabia, if you don't want to get pulled into this mess) where there are strict limits on what the Monarchy can do. I don't think they need to be quite a neutered as the British Royals, but some limits so that they are no longer seen as "above the law," would keep a lot of this kind of thing from gaining too much traction.

Actually I've been giving that more thought.
I'm willing to bet most of China's goods come to Europe by ship from the South China Sea, through the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal to europe.

Right on target. The only functional or semi-functional democracies in the Middle East are Israel and Iraq. Not that Bush will ever receive any credit.

Yeah but the Warhogs have something extra, a psychological aspect to them. When you see one and you're the enemy, you can't help but shudder with fear when you see it diving in your direction.
Kinda like the German JU-87's, which they attached horns to that made loud noises when they began to dive. It drives fear into the hearts of enemies and tank crews everywhere

I was merely pointing out that, in pure power in a single punch, modern fighter-bombers can out-punch the 'hog. For pure staying power (both damage taken and being able to stay close to the ground troops they're supporting) the A-10 is preferable.

It's a bitch to enter GPS coordinates into the Abrams systems when you only have hooves.
But seriously, the Northern Sinai is a long stretch of desert to run tanks across, while under observation from the Israelis. Especially when the treaty with Israel forbids armor from most of the peninsula. Egypt doesn't have armor anywhere within several hundred miles of the border, so it'd be tough to gain strategic surprise.

Muslim Brotherhood? You don't say! Remember when Teh Bamster met with them in April, 2009? It kind of put a strain on him and Mubarek during his American Pharaoh tour:
U.S. President Barack Obama met with members of Egypt's Islamist opposition movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, earlier this year, according to a report in Thursday editions of the Egyptian daily newspaper Almasry Alyoum.
The newspaper reported that Obama met the group's members, who reside in the U.S. and Europe, in Washington two months ago.
According to the report, the members requested that news of the meeting not be publicized. They expressed to Obama their support for democracy and the war on terror.
The newspaper also reported that the members communicated to Obama their position that the Muslim Brotherhood would abide by all agreements Egypt has signed with foreign countries.
Obama landed in Cairo on Thursday to deliver a conciliatory speech as part of his outreach to the Arab and Muslim world.
The Muslim Brotherhood is considered a Sunni-dominated fundamentalist Islamic organization that has spawned numerous factions across the Arab world that have engaged in terrorist activity, including the Palestinian rejectionist group Hamas.
It is also the main opposition bloc to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whose regime is viewed favorably in the West due to its adherence to the thirty-year-old peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
Yup, obviously those moderate Muslims we keep hearing about. Obama really is a useful idiot.

Well, that was a bit of hyperbole. The point is that Arab/Muslim armies are notoriously inept when it comes to complex military technology. It's extremely difficult to overcome the fatalist idea of inshallah to get them to even perform basic maintenance on their equipment.

@48: "Also- Naval Rail Gun. Soon, I hope."
To use against tanks? They're direct fire weapons - you'd have to bring your ship in awful close to shore, and Hizbollah showed what can happen if you do that. Hell, the Argies - despite all manner of lack of parts and technical know-how - cobbled together a shore-launched Exocet back in the Falklands War. No reason to assume that somebody with a nice patron state couldn't do that one better.

The Egyptian M1A1's are, hmm, what's a good euphemism...tuned down a bit, let's say. The possibility that a post-Mubarak Egypt would include the Muslim Brotherhood getting its hands on those machines was planned for.
#73, no. No aerial platform except the AC-130 has the lead-slinging ability of the GAU-8 30mm Gatling in the A-10. You can put more poundage (22K vs 16K) on the Strike Eagle, but that involves multiple ejector racks, etc, etc, and the Strike Eagle only has a 20mm Gatling. The 15E also can't take a hit like a A-10 can.
And the A-10s are going through an upgrade process to the C model, including wing spar replacement, so they'll be good to go for many years to come.

The new ones are supposed to be able to hit a target from over 100 miles out. One of the models claims 200 miles. I'm not seeing 3+ times curvature of the earth as "close to shore." And it's ballistic, so it can hit anything with the correct trajectory, and going at those speeds (Mach 2+ I think?) you could bring them to bear (did I get the right form of that word?) very quickly.

Democracy is meaningless separate from restrictions on government, civil liberties, strong countervailing institutions (which could be civic organizations, churches, etc.), and cultural values that support individualism over collectivism.
As much as the United States and other countries are Constitutional Republics with functioning legal systems, they have the social and cultural conditions for property rights, individual liberties, and prosperity. Democracy is only successful if it builds on these things and its citizens respect the factors that provide its foundation.

It took hundreds of years of intellectual and economic change to plant, nurture, and develop the types of societies that we take for granted. These changes simply have not occured in many Islamic countries and probably won't in any of our lifetimes. There are social, cultural, and political reasons why some cultures live in homes with air conditioners and other live in caves.
I blame all this democracy bullshit on liberals, and it is so pervasive that it has seeped into the heads of many conservatives. Liberals spend a good amount of their energy wailing about cultural relativism, and I think that this has caused people to think that all cultures are the same minus some minute and unsubstantial differences in food, clothing, and prayer.

The Air Force has tried to retire the A10 several times, to be replaced by F16s. Us old Army groundpounder types are convinced that it's because the fighter mafia hates the idea of CAS. When the A10 was scheduled for retirement in the late 80s, we used to make grim jokes that the F16s would perform CAS by going in quick, sloppily dropping bombs ASAP and then climbing to altitude to go play fighter ace.
Probably wasn't a fair opinion of the AF, but it sure felt that way to us grunts.

I think that a large part of the problem is that we have been "conditioned" to think that Democracy is what makes our society work... even though we are NOT a Democracy, but a Republic.
Thus, spreading Democracy without the underlieing structure of a Freedom based Republic, is NOT what we should be doing.
Sharia Law should NEVER have been part of the Iraqi Constitution... and an American type Bill of Rights should have been a condition of our helping them.... Because without it, Democracys are unstable.

Not quite that easy. They really don't believe in Equality or Natural Rights. They (at most) see us and want to ape what we're doing, but don't understand the underlying philosophy from which it arises.
So, mostly, they're hearing their mullahs and imams saying "Throw off the dictator and you shall be free!" and don't understand what that means. To a greater or lesser extent, they've basically grown up believing that you do what the religious authority says. So they may well "throw off the dictator" just to be quite willing pets to the theocracy that gets established "for the people."
Indeed, they probably wouldn't even understand the concept of "By, of, and for the People."

Well if they are slated to be replaced by the F-35, then their gonna be around for a long long long time. The F-35 , one plane that does all, is doing nothing for nobody and is so far behind schedule that we might as well retrofit the Phantom.
Indeed. The decision to go with the F-35 and cancel the F-22 will go down in history as a decision on par with the SGT YORK. A part of me wants to sympathize with Gates, since he seems to be trying to head off larger cuts, and there are certainly some programs that needed to go. However, I think in the long run, he simply is unwilling to stand up to the administration, even if it means resigning his job rather than follow through with a program that will get soldiers killed. I also think that the F-35 program is going to be the nail in the coffin for the USAF.
I've said before, we'd be better off cancelling the F-35A (The AF version), and using the money to bump up our total number of F-22s to ~400, buy 1000 new A-10s modified for increased ISR capability, and fifty AC-130s.

Even if they work out the bugs, CAS as performed by the F35 will be like my comment #198 above. Drop all your bombs as soon as humanly possible, then go chase enemy fighters to make ace. This is EXACTLY what us Army guys were afraid of back in the 80s.
It's not even an issue of making ace. Fighters are designed completely differantly than CAS craft, for good reason. The problem is that the design requirements for a dogfighter make them very vulnerable and fragile when trying to get low and slow enough to support the guys on the ground. F-35 drivers are going to be dropping their ordinance from 20,000 feet and bugging out as quick as they can. Especially if we ever face a power with any serious AA capability.

Well, killing the AF version would allow the focus to be put on developing a marine/naval aircraft, which would be a lot simpler in terms of requirements. Hopefully, it would speed up the development process.

In poverty stricken Mauritania, for instance, slavery of blacks and caste systems, and the recent pogroms killing/evicting blacks provides reason enough for self emulation from the lowest caste being annihilated in this perpetually unstable country. There is another element of this 'democracy' nonsense that people don't usually see.
When our political elites interact with Muslims, they interact with other elites educated at the same institutions with similar backgrounds. They aren't interacting with the overwhelming majority of the population in a typical Islamic country. They see people who think and act like them and assume that these people could run the country much as the United States is run. Our political elites believe that it is perfectly legitimate to have a government that provides bundles of incentives and punishments to have its citizens behave in a certain way. They assume that all that is needed is 'competent' leadership to turn radically different cultures in Western Democracies.
This is yet another example of how out of touch our leaders are. They are drawing their conclusions about other cultures from their interactions with the handful of people they have met on their 'goodwill' or 'diplomatic' tours. They have no substantive knowledge about the world and can't help but make mistakes that are directly related to their insularity.

The problem is that helicopters are often very vulnerable to SAF and RPGs. Not to mention that any first world group of engineering students and hobbyists can put together a SAM with enough punch to make life unpleasant for helo pilots, given a garage with a decent machine shop setup and some privacy.

I figured Pakistan would collapse long before Egypt.
Egypt probably won't collapse, not yet. The Egyptians have risen up against their own government several times, notably in 1919 and 1952 against the Brits, but there was always a noticeable leader of the uprising, such as Zaghloul or Nasser.
I dunno if there's such a leader for this particular uprising, but if there is, they would either be from the Muslim Brotherhood (think of them as Al Queda with a little more charm - they would like to subjugate everyone under the House of Islam) or the April 6 Youth Movement. Not so sure how the later would treat us, but if the former got ahold of the Egyptian reigns of power, they would renounce Egypt's peace treaty with Israel and prompt start agitating other Arab/Muslim states to crush the Israelis.

Not to mention they're harder to keep in the air. How many times were their fatalities because of too much sand in a helicopter's engine during the Gulf War? I know that Ollie North's first "War Stories" book talks about a lot of them.
If for no other reason than increased range (due to speed, not necessarily fuel- since I don't know about that) it would seem that airplanes for CAS are far superior.

And, in our desire never to re-fight the last war, we seem completely to have forgotten that the reason generals "always plan to fight the last war" is because there are lessons there. Like the fact we'll always need ground-pounders, and that they'll probably need CAS at some point.

These elites would most likely fall in line with their populace, especially if this hypothetical war breaks out during the current Reign of Error, else they may be assassinated and possibly replaced by radicals who would eagerly drag their country into a costly conflict with Israel.
Garm Nasser, even though he instigated and lost 2 wars with Israel, is regaled in Egypt as a hero, while the man who signed the peace treaty with Israel, Sadat, was brutally assassinated by part of his own military. Sadat was never lionized, and his death wasn't as mourned, such as Nasser's life and death were.

There are some people up thread that actually think Egypt has something to do with our oil supply.
What?
Listen closely: We get MORE-THAN-HALF of our imported crude from CANADA and MEXICO. The A-rabs are something like less than a quarter. The Gulf of Mexico could replace all Eastern hemisphere imports and we wouldn't know it.
Just WOW

Can you imagine 10s of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood fanatics arriving in Cairo as a mob and all burning each other to death in a huge pyre to make a statement?
Boy would we be in trouble then, eh?
Imagine their carbon footprint. Wow.

That guy got the rawest deal in all of politics. A nonsense word that the WaPo tried for a week to make racist, by which they smeared his mother, while Webb ran a sub-rosa anti-semitic campaign.
That being said, I think that George Allen is the only guy who could actually lose to Webb in the general. Mostly because Allen just couldn't maneuver deftly enough to deal with the smears and because he still has that undeserved reputation.

Then she will be a true love of mine. On the side of hill a sprinkling of leaves Washes the grave with slivery tears. A soldier cleans and polishes a gun. Sleeps unaware of the clarion call. Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather.moncler jacket|moncler jacken|
