As for Winehouse...as I wrote in the sidebar, it's sad, but not really a surprise. She's been chasing the devil for a long time, and she finally caught him.

The Left isn't stupid. They understand the high intrinsic value of first impressions.

Fahrenheit 451 is a mediocrity masquerading as a profundity, from back in the day when Liberals hated, just hated censorship - until they started censoring every last thing they thought disagreed with their worldview. I'll take that kind of liberal any day. (just not enough to swing elections!)

He only got better with age.

36 Always loved that movie. And the scene where they have the race to finish the road that's being tarred? That turned into the theme music of the local ABC news station in Los Angeles. At least when I lived there.

37 Unlike many a hypocritical Limousine Liberal - the sort that decries strong border security, from inside the safety of his gated community with an illegal gardener in his yard and an illegal nanny screwing his teenaged kid - Newman actually put his money where his mouth was. His Newman's Own brand of foods gave hundreds of millions to charity.

38 The backwards spinning carousel toward the end freaked me right the hell out.

That movie was *really* out of character for Disney at the time it came out. There was another one -- The Black Hole -- that had some pretty damned dark elements for a Disney flick. The Black Hole was strying to be another Empire Strikes Back, obviously, but it's a pretty decent movie in its own right. (V.I.N.C.E.N.T. for the win! Plus B.O.B. was great -- you can't miss with a robot Slim Pickens.)

Newman was good.  Very good.  He was in and made a lot of very good movies, meaning he made them very good.

He was more politcally active in the 70's and 80's , then backed away from it because I think he (rightfully) realized how public political asshattery could ruin your image.

He was also into auto racing, until he got older.  He raced a lot in SCCA races, and actually enjoyed that a lot more than acting for a while.

Best movies?  IMHO

Exodus, Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid, The Hustler, Hud, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Cool Hand Luke

Not bad for a kid from the suburbs of Cleveland.

88 On the Winehouse chick, wonder if it was the drugs as much as her seeming bouts of anorexia. Being underweight is very, very bad. Much more immediately life-threatening than being obese.

I've read before that anorexia has the highest morbidity rates of the major mental illnesses. Which surprised me since it's mainly a chick thing and chicks live longer than dudes and dudes tend to whack themselves at a much higher rate. Women attempt to off themselves more, but men actually do it. The difference being taking too many tylenol or ambien and taking too many bullets to the head. There's no real safe # of bullets to the head you can take, any # above zero is pretty grim. There's no stomach pumping an hour later at the ER.

Grim chain of thought. But first thing that popped in my head when I saw she died.

102 Was Winehouse a hobo?  She had a hobo name for sure.

Gator was kinda the sequel to White Lightning.

Burt directed it, I think. And he played it less serious.

I liked Event Horizon  but strangely enough, I'm not much of a Sc-Fi fan and I absolutely abhor horror movies.

Maybe it was the suspense factor. For instance, one of my fave scary flicks of all time is the obscure The Changeling starring George C. Scott.

105 Not that he's such a great actor,

Have you seen Gran Torino? Unforgiven?

106 My fave Newman movies are CHL and a little flick called Hombre.

107 There have been times in my life when I've wished there were more ways to express my grief and sorrow and pain to God.

My take on this scene:

This is a moment when a man realizes that now that he needs God's comfort and peace, all he has is a half-remembered comic jingle.

This is one of those scenes that can be many things depending on your mood while watching it.

Coo, Hand Luke is a masterpiece.

Especially the car wash scene.

108 Great movie and he was great in it.

Agreed!

I'm still scarred by seeing Ralphie's mom topless.

Well no, not really.

I love this movie. Always scares the hell out of me, and I've seen it multiple times.

110 The Oslo bomber had more in common with the Weather Underground and Bill Ayers than AQ.  They liked to blow up stuff.

Posted by: 'Nam Grunt at July 23, 2011 03:39 PM (wkjQi) I get pissed as hell thinking that if even ONE other person on that island had been armed, that SOB would not have been able to kill even a small fraction of the people he shot. But if you dare say that, I'm sure that twat Mika on Morning Joe will get all bent out of shape.

115 Absence of Malice was a pretty good Newman flick. (And it really shows what scumbags journalists are, as a rule.)

Yes, I have.  He did do well in those, but there was still the same no-nonsense, don't-give-a-shit attitude that has been the hallmark of all his movies.  And I'm not saying he was a bad actor.  Perhaps when I compare him to John Wayne, I mean he basically played the same character, with a few variances, in every movie.

122 Cannonball Run.

I think the line I'll always remember is the "you and the chocolate monk" bit directed at Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr.
