Ford Commercial Highlights That It Was Never Bailed Out
— Ace

Is this something?

I think it's something.

A big part of a consumer's decision-making in buying a car is what that vehicle says and stands for, what it says about him. Sure, the practical needs are paramount, but for any list of practical needs there are a handful of models satisfying that list; choosing between them comes down to intangible factors.

Ford thinks that the company standing on its own will appeal to consumers. Especially, I guess, in the truck market, where you'd imagine standing on your own two feet would be a particularly relevant brand identity.

Almost all truck ads are about masculinity and old-fashioned values. The advertisements themselves display the trucks, but the music and text is all about feeling and attitude.

If Ford makes a serious pitch on these grounds, they could profit.

Because what's GM going to say? Imagine a truck advertisement with the tagline, Because being a real man is admitting that sometimes you need a shoulder to cry on.

Thanks to Andy.

2 I decided as soon as the GM bailout happened that Ford would get my business from now on.  I haven't worn out my current car yet, but when I do, there will be no question where I'll get another.  I suspect I'm not alone.

I recently was in the market for a 4x4.  I looked at a Jeep Wrangler, a Ford Raptor and a Toyota FJ.  At the end of the day, I just couldn't pull the trigger on something tainted with the stench of UAW scum.  So now my very first foreign car sits in my drive way. And I love it.

you may get to buy the Ford anyway then....

the UAW used to play "slam the take higher" by playing the big3 against each other...they are going to go for Ford's throat since the UAW warchest is now tied to Chrysler/GM's performance.....

if Ford locks them out I will buy them forever

25 I bought my first pickup last summer. It's an F-150. It was either that or the Tundra. When I spec'd it out, the Silverado was more in line with what I wanted, but I will not buy a GM. I want GM to fail. The only Tundras I could find in this area were either crew cab or standard cab.

29 BMW, Audi, VW, Nissan, Hyundai, Toyota and Honda all have manufacturing plants in the United States. Some models are 100% in the US, instead of just assembled here.

30 Ford is looking to build factories in India and domestically to right to work states. The threat of a UAW strike and being strong armed by the feds has finally driven the company leadership to realize that old blue Detroit is too much of a liability.

Can't blame them. Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagon, and Honda have all found that right to work states free of the UAW's meddling make for the best stateside production.

50 All Big 3 automakers have UAW negotiations coming up soon, with Ford leading the pack. The UAW has pre-approved strike votes in their pockets.

It will be interesting to see how Ford handles this. I hope they let the UAW strike, as the unemployment picture should make the UAW very vulnerable.

51 In the dark ages, every Ford leaving the line in Dallas was emblazoned with "Made in Texas by Texans" on the rear window.  Worked for me.

Interesting....  I have an uncle who lives in Texas who collects old Fords.  Buys them and rebuilds them.  Specifically, 1932 V8's.

Every one of his old Fords has a bumper sticker that says "Made in Texas by Texans".

Now I know why.

97 Our immediate family (wife, myself and my folks) have bought three vehicles in the past 2 years:  F-250 superduty crewcab diesel, F-150 full cab, and a Ford Escape. Not only did we throw over $100K at Ford, but the trucks are considered high margin.

We will not buy a GM vehicle ever again. The rape of the bondholders, the screwing over of stock owners, and the fleecing of the taxpayers was done with the thuggery of an out-of-control government. Obama and Napolitano may be able to force Americans to be molested at the airport, but they can't (yet) force us to buy this union racket garbage.

98 Given the current understanding of "Dinah Shore Weekend," GM might well use those re-runs to cut into Subaru's hard-won market share...

99 Ford did get a big chunk of 'bailout' money, and it's why they didn't actually object to the bailout of GM and Chrysler - their silence was bought.  They aren't Mr Clean here, though I'm a Ford man myself.

100 Hell yes this something. A sediment previously expressed in the bogs of wingnut blogs makes it thru the marketing gurus, focus testing, legal reviews, and inherently risk adverse management of a major industrial entity that has to interact with the administration and their union thugs on multiple levels; you might have identified the leading crest of that fabled preference cascade.

102 Yeah really Ford saying they've taken no bailout money is about as honest as GM saying they paid their's back.  Of course this Ford commercial is just some regular guy they got to "interview" and he signed a release to use it in this series of commercials.  GM had their CEO in a commercial saying their bullshit.

Even before the Obama shenanigans it pissed me off how much they mismanaged the Saturn product line and made it just another badge for GM generic models. But now, it would feel like doing business with mobsters.

I really have to wonder ho much of the American public understands what went down with GM. How standing bankruptcy law was completely ignored and and a massive theft committed the government. This alone should have been enough to have people screaming bloody murder but most seem oblivious to the whole thing. Some I've heard say it was just a bunch of zillionaires who got screwed, so who cares. They cannot seem to imagine what a government that would do a big crime might do to someone of far lesser means to defend themselves.

139 1) Ford's investment in India is probably for the India market
2) Ford did a good job retooling its plants bringing its high-efficiency Euro models to the US at our lower cost of production
3) lots of Mexican production (fusions) of Fords.  Bought one anyway last year... (no union labor their)
4) Ford will have a major fight with UAW this time around...  hints that UAW is going for a $10,000 per Union member signing bonus on all three contracts (it was $3-4,000 for the last contract)
5) Ford got burned in China recently with a transmission plant JV with Gertag which pumped out a bunch of bad manual transmissions used for the 2011 Mustang (china has notoriously poor metalugy)
6) don't forget that on almost every car company's website, you can look through dealer inventory and get the actual window sticker, which will tell you where that car is assembled, and what the US content is...

140 Ok so I've been lurking on this site for a long time now, and I have a vested interest in Ford's continued success as I'm a supplier in good standing, so I'd like to add my comments on the issue.  I have a little advice for those who say they won't purchase a vehicle put together by UAW labor or even purchase and American name-plated vehicle. Where do you think the net profit goes from the sale of a Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen or Hyndai goes ? Back home to Japan, Germany and South Korea. Go ahead and be pissed at the UAW (you aint workin) they deserve a lot of scorn from the public for the greed they exhibit, especially when contract talks come around every few years. Ford is in the cross hairs this contract since GM and Chrysler have no strike clauses after latching their lips to the government teat, and the UAW is looking for give backs since Ford is very profitable again. It would be really something for Alan Mullaly to file suit to exempt Ford from  the provisions in the Wagner Act that allow for the cartel of labor known as the UAW to not represent the workers at Ford any longer. I'm well aware that the folks that purchase non American name-plated vehicles are exercising their choice as consumers in a free market. But there is more at stake now than ever before and our manufacturing base is becoming owned by more and more foreign entities which isn't in our best interests. So in closing I urge anyone buying a vehicle to purchase a Ford so I can sell them more tools to build more Mustangs and F-150's.

Who do you think the stockholders of GM, Ford and Chrysler are? Many of them are foreign investors. "home to Japan" doesn't really mean all that much.

I had been a GM truck guy my whole adult life. A year after the bailout, I swore I'd never buy another one just on principle. Knowing fist had the unreliability of Ford and Dodge (grandpa's F-350 was ALWAYS in the shop...and there's a reason Dodge trucks are so "affordable)...in the course of my research I came to learn that GM trucks are built in Canada, while Ford and Dodge are built in Mexico.

The ONLY truck designed and built in the United States (by non-union workers in San Antonio, TX)?

Yeah, I bought a Tundra.

So what if after the workers and shareholders are paid a few bucks go back to Japan? The bulk of my money went to the salaries of Non-union Americans...

...and I got a truck I like WAY better than any previous truck I've owned (it's my fourth).

147 Alan Mullaly used to be the President of Boeing's Commercial division, so he is very familiar with unions; I'd love to see him follow his former employer's lead and move to a right-to-work state.

I will say this about union workers; in many large towns, you don't have a lot of say about joining a union. If there are three decent employers in your town, and they're all union shops, you do what you have to do.

My husband is in freaking SEIU, for crying out loud; his hospital went union, and with 24 years vested and 5 to go before he could retire, he wasn't up to quitting to avoid joining the union.

I doubt that ALL UAW workers are scums, and I am buying Ford from here on out. I do still drive a 1986 Toyota pick-up, however, and Thor drove a Honda Civic hatchback til it finally died with 380,000 miles on it, so I understand why people like Japanese cars. (We bought a Ford Ranger when the Honda died, and I love it)

149 There are a lot of ex-loyal GM buyers who will never again purchase anything from GM. I am one of them. When the dust shook out over the fed takeover of GM and the final settlements were dictated, all GM SECURED BONDHOLDERS were shafted royally in order for the now union owned company to emerge from the manipulated bankruptcy. The abrogation of the bonds was in direct violation of all contract law in the US. Keep this in mind if you ever decide to invest in a guaranteed bond in this country. The government has the ability to just say one day, "By the way your guaranteed secured bond is now worthless. Tough." And you will have no recourse.

I've thought about that too.  The individuals are probably much like the rest of us, just trying to get by as best they can.  However, the leadership is reprehensible.  I'm sure the corporate leadership team of Ford has as much or more antipathy for the UAW leadership as we do.  So whether to buy from them or not gets complicated.

However, at the end of the day, a few cents out of every dollar you spend with with the Big 3 goes into political contributions to causes we despise.

That said, if Ford gets out of the union contract, I will be buying a sweet Lincoln MKZ or MKS as my summer car keeping my FJ as my "oh dear god why I did I move to Minnesota?" winter ride.

156 I've never owned a Ford until last year.  I specifically stayed away from GM and Chrysler.  My last car was a Dodge Durango and I was looking to replace it with another Dodge.  My wife loved the GMC Acadia, so that was in the running.  But when the bailout happened, and they closed the dealership under political circumstances, I swore never to buy Chrysler or GM.

Now I drive a Ford F-150 Raptor.

This anti-bailout sentiment is real.  Nearly everyone I talk to about my truck, and believe me, it is a fantastic truck that draws plenty of conversation, agrees that they won't buy Chrysler or GM either.

The next few years in the lives of those companies should be very telling.

157 "Now I drive a Ford F-150 Raptor."

Damn.  Pretty sweet ride.

I have an F-150 plain as dirt pickup.  The windows are manually operated (Which is a feature I specifically seek out).  The tool box was removed from an old truck.  It's probably twenty years old (truck is pretty new).

Even this incredibly cheap ride of mine is reliable and respectable in quality.  The last GM I had that was decent was one of the pre-UAW Saturns.  Most of my cars have been GM, but now it's Ford or Honda, just because I can't waste money on a car I can't rely on.

The bailout crap is just a symptom of the real disease.  GM/Chrysler are rotten to the core, and that's why they ultimately needed corrupt crony bailout cash, and to screw their own investors as well as warranty holders (in GM's case).

Ford took some government money, and they share the union label, so in many ways they suck.  but they aren't rotten to the core, like GM is.  Buying Ford sends a message, too.

163 Ford is UAW. I am ready to buy a Toyota. I'm also gonna buy a Gibson guitar. So if any of you morons are Toyota dealing Gibson guitar salesmen, I'm a laydown customer.

164 Ford: The Original American Car Company

165 Sgt. York again your research is faulty. No Ford pick ups are assembled in Mexico. Dearborn Truck Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant build the F-150. Kentucky Truck builds the Heavy Duty 250/350, and the Maverick? They stopped building that for the US market in the 70's. No F-Series trucks are built outside the US. I'd be glad to help you out with your research.

I have always tried to support our made-in-America brands....but now it comes down to supporting the UAW, or not.

So it will probably be 'not' from now on.

167 It was a Subaru for me. Non-Union, made in Indiana. Replaced my previous 15-year-old Subaru after an accident totaled it. I strongly considered Ford. Their Sync system is great, and I enjoyed the Fusion I used as a rental for a while, but they didn't offer AWD on any of their hatchbacks at the time. All wheel drive is very handy in icy rural Maryland winters.
