Forget it Jake, It's the NBA
— Dave in Texas

Not the worst sore loser cheap shot I ever saw in the playoffs, but definitely top ten material.

ALSO: I bloviated about "the worst cheap shot ever" on twitter and Adam Baldwin corrected me.

I hate being corrected. Particularly when I'm wrong, and also, it's the friggin NBA. Nobody pulled a gun, so it wasn't the worst ever. My bad.

Ron Artest just emailed me to say "I didn't even choke that bitch."

Enjoy retirement Phil. You've more than earned it.

Here's the McMahon slam by Charles Martin that Adam was referring to..

No guns though. Far as I could tell, it's old video.

19 Adam Baldwin @DaveinTexas Piffle! Of course they get cheaper. See Kermit Washington v. Rudy Tomjonavich, or that douche Packer that slammed Jim McMahon. F-ing A right! My uncle STILL despises the Packers organization with a passion, because of that despicable cheap shot on McMahon. At the time, we (the Bears) were the defending champs and still one of the best teams in the league. So it's akin today of someone last season running with Drew Brees as he threw a pass, standing next to Brees to watch the play, then after the receiver makes the catch, picking up Brees and slamming him into ground on his throwing shoulder and messing up his shoulder, putting him out for the rest of the season. That is a MF-ing cheap shot.

40 And not a hockey clip in sight. Funny how that works. Posted by: Wyatt Earp at May 08, 2011 09:01 PM I went to the NHL page on ESPN last night and one of the "Top Stories" was "Rangers' Avery supports NY Same-Sex Marriage". That's considered "hockey news" for ESPN. I actually went to the comments page and saw the expected pro-SSM bilge and spent about 30 minutes responding and correcting some ignorance. I went back this morning to see if there were any further responses to my comments, only to find that ESPN had sent 30 comments down the memory hole, where I and a couple other pro-SSM commenters were debating (1) the issue of redefining marriage, (2) the fact that marriage law is not "unconstitutional" and (3) the fact that marriage is not a "right", but even if it was, homosexuals are not denied the "right" to marriage, to which former Gov Jim McGreevey can attest (example I gave to back my point). But, interestingly enough, ESPN vamoosed 30 comments of that back and forth conversation from their site.

42 So I did some niche sport watching today. I have a fondness for the underdog sport trying to get attention. I watched some: supercross - crazy jumping moto racing. The bikes aren't big enough to put any visible ads on -- so the whole sport is mainly just an ad for the bikes. And the riders careers are super short cause they take headers off motorcycles all the time. It's rare they make it pass their mid-20s and are still competitive. Tiny little aggro dudes flinging their bodies around the track. Angry little west coast motorized jockeys. NLL - indoor lacrosse. It was on Versus as I was flipping around. Hockey on astroturf, complete with hockey fights. The goalies wear more pads than hockey goalies -- no idea why. They look like sumo wrestlers.

Posted by: Mallamutt at May 08, 2011 09:04 PM The only time I watch ESPN anymore is to watch NFL and college football. The whole network and all the anchors' egos have just gotten too big for their own good. They're insufferable to watch. So I don't bother anymore. I've never seen a team play as uninspired as the Lakers did in this series. They looked like they were more interested in which one of them was going to score boning rights to Kim Kardashian than winning a third consecutive NBA title. Also Kobe Bryant's skills appear to be deteriorating at an exponential rate. Lean years will soon be returning to Lakerland.

52 I love all the failed/struggling indoor arena sports. Arena football, indoor soccer, indoor lacrosse, arenacross.. All those empty seats in all those arenas when no basketball or hockey team in in town .... it's too tempting for the budding sports entrepreneur. And the arena owners would love it if a 3rd arena sport took off. Every year there's new teams and new leagues as old teams and leagues fold and relocate. Nobody makes any money, but they keep trying. My favorite is indoor stock car racing. Some crazy dude came up with little man-sized nascar cars you can drive around a hockey rink. Of course, when I say I love these. I don't love them in the sense of actually attending any events or giving them any money. But I like to know that they are out there trying to invent the next American pasttime. And the more absurd (indoor nascar) the better.

67 @65 Ok, but how come when I've seen outdoor lacrosse (I've caught some NCAA games on ESPN) the outdoor goalies have drastically fewer pads than the indoor goalie? And don't the outdoor guys have bigger sticks, so the ball is probably going even faster outdoors? Plus I'm pretty sure the indoor goal is actually smaller than the outdoor goal. (I'm obviously not a lacrosse expert.) So - smaller goal plus much larger pads indoors. Why is that?

83 This is par for the course with Phil Jackson teams.  He usually has a designated thug/brute on the team but he welcomes this kind of play by any of his players.

I first witnessed this coaching "genius" in the 92 finals Portland vs Chicago.  Nobody for the Bulls could guard Cliff Robinson so in game 3 Phil decided to have Stacey King and Scott Williams use all 12 of their fouls body slamming him to the floor every time he drove to the basket.

He won't let his star players engage in this behavior but he always has thugs on his team who main objective is to try and frustrate/injure opponents' best players.

Stacey King, Scott Williams, Rick Fox, Ron Artest, Matt Barnes are all punks.  Odom and Bynum aren't designated thugs like these other guys but in a blow out loss, they got the nod from Phil.

Sadly typical of what this three-step league has deteriorated into: nothing but big shorts and taunting.

On a positive note, who really gives a shit about the  NBA anyway?

101 And Rudy T didn't get cheap-shotted. He ran up behind a guy to escalate a fight and got rocked for it.

Uh, no.  RT was trying to get in to break things up.  Every man on both teams knew what kind of guy he was.  That's pretty obvious from the clip that shows him slowing down and putting his hands (palms, not fists) up in a defensive posture as the punch comes in.

109 I first witnessed this coaching "genius" in the 92 finals Portland vs Chicago. Nobody for the Bulls could guard Cliff Robinson so in game 3 Phil decided to have Stacey King and Scott Williams use all 12 of their fouls body slamming him to the floor every time he drove to the basket. Posted by: Lemmiwinks at May 08, 2011 09:46 PM Well, to be fair, that's how the NBA was played in the 80s and 90s. Remember the Bad Boy Pistons and the Jordan Rules, the NY Knicks with Oakley and Mason and Starks, the Miami Heat-NY Knicks series, Chicago-New York series, etc. That was par for the course back then. The NBA nowadays is made up of a bunch of pansies who flop and cry foul if they're breathed on wrong. They never would have made it in the NBA of the 80s and 90s.

9 I always say....without the athletic ability most of them would be in prison.

Let 'em play in the prison league. It's where they belong.

Seriously, for that type of offense, the offender's team should be forced to play shorthanded, as in hockey. Let them play 5 on 4, and also take away all credit from the offender's stats, so that if he made 8 of 12 shots, let it go in the record books as 0 for 12. Hit 'em where they live.

156 Ah, bunch of Texan wusses getting decked by LA teams, nothing new.

What?  Are you smoking Compton crack?  This humiliating sweep at the hands of Texas' third-best franchise is just the icing on the Texas domination cake.  Now all three teams have humiliated the pre-crowned champions in the playoffs.  You don't remember the Spurs closing down the Craptastic Forum with a Made-Kobe-CRY 28-point blowout in 2003?  MADE. THE. RAPIST. CRY!  The Rockets even dethroned the heavily-favored Magic Lakers a couple times in the '80s.

I'd mention football, but that would just be humiliating for the Californicans (as if the Lakers' punk-ass, no-class exit wasn't humiliating enough.)

Now, just like it happens at the end of all the Lakers' runs, we'll watch all the Laker fanboys disappear from public sight for a few years until the next time David Stern makes another team trade the Lakers its All-Star for a bag of balls. (Who knows...he might make the Magic trade Dwight Howard to LA for next season! For a #2 pick and Bill Walton's kid!)
