FORNICATE You, Penn State*
— Russ from Winterset

Am I overreacting? I don't think so.

Want to regurgitate your breakfast? Here's some reading material that will make you want to puke. Fast forward to the "Victim #2" section of the report for bonus outrage.

So how do these sub-geniuses from State College react to news that their beloved head coach turned a blind eye to a kiddie-raper in the midst of his program? They have a nighttime demonstration.......in support of the coach.

As the lolcats might say........UR DOIN IT RONG.

(The 19-year old boy who was raped in the shower as a 10-year old back in 2002 was unavailable for comment.)

UPDATE(and a caveat): From DiT, here's this gem, from Michele Catalano.

Also, now that I've cooled down for a second, I should probably say that while I want to take pliers & a blowtorch to Coach Sandusky for what he did, I'd like to see everyone who knew about this and failed to report it to the authorities flogged in public, and I'd like to see the State College PD wade into the idiot demonstrators from last night with batons whistling and pepper spray unholstered.....I realize that the Greater Penn State Community did nothing wrong in this case. Unless more evidence comes out that the tens of thousands of Penn State students, alumni and fans in Western Pennsylvania actually knew about this story before it broke and did nothing, it's hard to tar them all with the same broad brush.

With that said, I will NOT apologize for the hastily-written title to this post. If my "Fuck You" to the Penn State community is more offensive than coaches and administrators enabling a child predator to continue his sick pastime in and around the Penn State campus, then maybe you need to step back and look at your priorities. (UPDATE WITHIN AN UPDATE: because I don't want my justified use of profanity to detract from my justified outrage here, I have replace all but one of my f-bombs in the original draft of the post with the names of Muppet Characters. See if you can spot them all!)

BONUS UPDATE (with bonus "KERMITS" and invocation of tBCoS): From Slublog, there's this link of breaking news. So Joe Paterno is going to retire at the end of the season?

Whiskey? Tango? Foxtrot? Does Joe think he is going to be carried off the MISS PIGGY field to the BEAKER cheers of the DR. BUNSEN HONEYDEW crowd after leading Penn STADLER State to another GONZO bowl game? FOZZIE BEAR that noise. He should have the common DR. TEETH & THE ELECTRIC MAYHEM decency to slink out the back door of the coaching offices in shame like John SAM THE EAGLE Edwards leaving a session of a Federal RIZZO THE RAT Grand Jury.

That moderation expressed in my first update? KERMIT that. If Joe JANIS THE BASS PLAYER Paterno is allowed to coach another ANIMAL football game at Penn RALPH THE DOG State University, every WALDORF fan in the stadium who so much as smiles when their BERT team scores their first ERNIE touchdown can go Suck The Barbed Cock of Satan as far as I'm concerned.

BIG BIRD! Now I'm pissed.

And when you come back with the "look at all he's done for the community" card, tell me this. How many other kids have been raped since 2002 because JoePa and the other jackasses at Penn State didn't think it was necessary to get the police involved in this situation? Ten? Five? Even one? Is that a fair trade for all that Joe Paterno has done for his community?

Shit's about to get bad in Happy Valley.

It's big news here in SWPA.

Before this all hit, there were rumors that JoePa would retire at the end of the year as his contract was up and that Urban Meyer would come take the job, however  I can't see why Meyer would want to come into this situation.

As for the house cleaning at PSU, it'll happen.  Everyone involved will get punished by the law, unfortunately they won't get what they actually deserve.

I believe he's out.  He posted $100,000 cash bail.

Probably paid for by some asinine booster.

The other one (in addition to all the PSU staffers) who should be up on some sort of charges is the university counsel, who had a conflict of interest when he was advising both PSU and Sandusky's foundation.

Posted by: WalrusRex at November 09, 2011 08:46 AM (Hx5uv)

18 Please know that those 500 idiot students only reflect themselves. There are over 44,000 students enrolled at the University Park campus. The greater State College community is disgusted with the whole situation and want them all gone (Joe, McQueary, Curley, Schultz, Spanier, and the enablers on the Board of Trustees). I've talked with many, many people who are angry and outraged. Some are saddened and heartbroken. But I've talked with no one who thinks that this is no big deal or who are upset that this has distracted from the football.

23 Don't hold back. Though I agree with you.

But I do feel a bit bad for the players on the team that will be booed mercilessly, especially the younger players and everyone else who knew nothing about this as the program is now ruined. Going to make for interesting fan signs in the stands, the television cameras will have to be careful.

It's a cult. Last night's pep rally and a lot of the comments I've read at other places make it feel that way to me. Paterno can do no wrong, Penn State can do no wrong, it's Spanier/Curley/Schultz's fault. It's McQueary's fault. It's someone else's fault because Paterno is a good wholesome paragon of virtue and could never possibly look the other way to save his own skin.

44 We have a post on Penn State - but nothing on Fast and Furious? The conspiracy is starting to crack with a former US attorney admitting to smearing whistle blower Dodson.

This is the guy who will finger Holder.

It meets all the criteria for a criminal conspiracy: crimes were committed - more than one person involved in planning and committing those crimes.

As has been pointed out elsewhere stonewalling is all that is left to the administration; if they could have put the blame on somebody they would have done so already. They can't because Obama's finger prints are all over this. Only he could change agency policy, only he could have ordered a black ops operation like this.

Grow a pair Ace, give us a flaming skull and admit the obvious: Fast and Furious is a criminal conspiracy; it can't be anything else. Watergate was a criminal conspiracy, so is this. Run with this ball - it is a winner.

I was in State College that year as John was going to graduate school.  There was nothing about this in the news at the time.

Given that the Lions weren't actually doing very well the years I was there, if it had hit the news Paterno might have been afraid that he was vulnerable to losing his position.  Although doing the right thing and calling the police is the only moral and ethical choice he really had.

Particularly given that it was in 1998 that a mother reported Sandusky to campus police for an incident with her son in the PSU showers.  That was the case that was investigated by the DA who disappeared.

So there is no way Joe Pa didn't know that Sandusky had a problem.

88 So does anyone have a simple link to something that details exactly what Paterno was told ? Because what I've read is that he did not know the EXACT allegation, and having not witnessed it personally, I'm not sure reporting it to his superiors ISN'T the extent of his responsibilities. All the outrage seems to me to hinge on Paterno knowing that his coach was sodomizing a 10 year old. OF COURSE he should report that to the police if he KNEW it. Otherwise, his responsibilities were to tell the witness to report what he saw to the AD, the college administration, and the police, AND notify his superiors of the situation.

All these people that knew - McQueary's dad, the janitorial crew, Paterno, et al - they all made a conscious decision to try to let it just kind of go away in order to preserve their own status - even when that status was laughably pathetic. What the COOKIE MONSTER else is he going to say?  "Yeah, the TA told me that Sandusky was raping a 10 year old, but I just handed it over to the AD and thought that would be the end of it."

What the TA told the investigators (and, apparently, the grand-jury) that he saw (and, eventually*, told JoePa) was that he saw the dude buggering a little boy "apparently about 10 years old."

*- Apparently, when he first saw the incident, instead of calling the cops right away, he ran home and called his dad- he didn't report the incident to Joe until the next day.  Reports I've heard then say Joe waited yet another day before telling the AD.

101 There seems to some discrepancies here.  JoPa is saying the guy told him they were just "horsing around". ----------------------------- The discrepancy is that Paterno is lying. I highly doubt the Grad. Asst. would be "distraught" and "shaken up" while describing "horsing around" to Paterno.

Posted by: Spiked at November 09, 2011 09:06 AM (vFVJi)

102 Joe Paterno did not say "horsing around."  He testified that he knew it was something of a "sexual nature."

From Sports Illustrated:

"After hearing from McQueary, Paterno alerted athletic director Tim Curley. Yet instead of relaying what McQueary claims to have told him, Paterno conveyed a milder and vaguer description. Specifically, Paterno testified under oath that McQueary had said that Sandusky was engaged in fondling or "doing something of a sexual nature" to a boy.

To be sure, the phrase "doing something of a sexual nature" technically includes forcibly subjecting a child to anal intercourse, meaning Paterno may have been more evasive than untruthful. Then again, Paterno's hazy choice of words could encompass a band of sexual acts, from raping a 10-year-old boy to inappropriately touching or patting a child, that ranges too widely in heinousness to be deemed consistent with McQueary's allegedly more specific statements. The phrase unnecessarily imports ambiguity and generality where none had existed, and dubiously invites the listener -- Curley -- to assign a lack of severity to the incident. From that lens, Paterno appears to have told Curley a different account than what McQueary had told him."

Given that Sandusky had already been investigated for his behavior with young boys at PSU's facilities, it defies belief that Paterno did not realize that something serious was going on.

Let's look at the time line.

Sandusky was JoePa's heir apparent.  Then in 1998 he is investigated for inappropriate behavior with a child by the police.

In 1999 he retires from football and works with the Second Mile Chairty and is given full access to PSU facilities.

Then in 2002, a Assistant sees Sandusky raping a young boy in the shower and reports it to JoePA. Let's say hypothetically that he did use the phrase "horsing around" and not "raping".  Do you think JoePa didn't know about the accusations in 1998? You don't think that had something to do with the immediate retirement of the man who was to take over for JoePa as head coach.

I'm sorry, I'm not buying it.  They knew, they probably told him he could stick around if he promised to stop and they swept it under the rug so it wouldn't reflect badly on PSU. Then Sandusky continued his predatory ways and it's blown up in their faces, ruined PSU's reputation, and worst of all ruined the lives of young innocent boys.

JoePa and everyone involve need to leave immediately.

The grad student (at the time, he's now a position coach for Penn State) testified to the grand jury that he witnessed and reported actual honest-to-God sodomy.

If you're saying we need to wait for the facts to condemn Sandusky, then I say MISS PIGGY that noise.  If you're saying that we should wait to condemn JoePa until we figure out what the Grad student told him at the time, then I would ask you this:

If someone whom you trusted enough to eventually hire them to be in a position of responsibility in your organization tells you that "something of a sexual nature" happened at your facilities, and you admit that he was very agitated while he was telling you this, do you take the next step and ask him forcefully, "Exactly what did you see?"  I don't think Joe Paterno actively participated in the rapes, but I think that his failure to follow up on a report allowed the rapist to keep practicing his craft.  That may not be criminal, but it's immoral, IMHO.

123 just when you start to think you cant be any more cynical- you might have a small idea that i hate all things government and distrust all authority and all law enforcement, and have a deep suspicion of those who participate. I know all about right and wrong, but what passes for legal v illegal in the am system of justice as it is currently interpreted is sickening. Only someone who supported a wife and 4 kids by the seat of his pants for 35 years would really understand how i feel so you can imagine how i feel about this sandusky shit, as again i predict the future. I also hate the grand jury system. this shit had no business in the hands of a DA. I can't imagine the politics and pressure used against anyone trying to do the right thing. my granddad used to say --- never underestimate what a man will do to keep a good payin' job but i dont really understand bureaucratic inertia and nepotism they way you must. i spent all my life fighting against it, avoiding it and railing about it. But im pretty sure that all these guys feel that they really did what they were supposed to do. and are surprised to see how we on the outside feel about the charges and timeline put forward. so while i feel they all are to blame, it again is the system which insulates the users from the reality of day to day on the outside that allows this shit to happen. americans now judge events not on results but on whether good intentions and the proper feeling was demonstrated. we have changed from keeping score to everyone gets a trophy. from hockey to fugure skating and the progressive judges do all the scoring all the poor little abused boys from broken or low functioning families that are same as good little commies, conditioned by gov to standing in line for some gov cheese, this is where it breaks people down, people who dont need to think for themselves wont. well, I told paterno, so it must be ok well i told curley well i told spanier fuck all of them. this is going to destroy recruiting, applications, fundraising, faculty, coaches for at least ten years. i wouldnt be surprised (if the charges are true) that season ticket sales drop off and maybe someone organizes a boycott of a game or two. i believe they will all lose their jobs in the next two years as this thing plays out. they must go

Posted by: mare at November 09, 2011 01:04 PM (A98Xu) KNEW is different than being told by someone else that you saw "something". If, indeed, Paterno was told the details of exactly what happened, thats another story. But then I still believe #1 you council your employee to call the police themselves and then follow up. And when you follow up and they haven't called the police, you either have him call in your presence or call yourself. As a pretty high ranking official at PSU, it might be almost as important for him to notify the university while the witness is calling the police. The important thing is that it IS reported, not who does the reporting. Obviously they dropped the ball in EPIC fashion. But until I read for myself exactly how this went down, I'm not rushing to judgement on Paterno. And knowing the horrendous fallout over this for PSU, the fact that Paterno was not summarily dismissed makes me inclined to think 1) he didn't know the details, and 2) that there was agreement with somebody to get the police involved that failed. I'm not retarded. I just understand the dynamics that take place among large organizations. Joe Paterno is not the only guy involved and the people he is responsible for is not limited to 2 or 3 people. No matter what, he is accountable for some of this. If he knew the details, he is accountable for a lot of it. IF

Joe Paterno's grand jury testimony is that he was told that the "horsing around" as you call it "was something of a sexual nature".  Unless you're one of the sick twists who get off from snapping buttcheeks with rolled up towels, then it's hard to envision that JoePa simply thought they were up to normal Jr. High lockerroom hijinks.

McGraery or whatever the GONZO his name is said he went back to the lockers to put away some new shoes he had.  While he was there, he heard noises that sounded like sexual activity coming from the showers.  So he goes to investigate.

So why does he do this?

What is he expecting to find?  And what in god's name would it have taken for him to see that would cause him to take action?

Umm, excuse me, JoePa is not the victim here. His inaction directly resulted in more kids being sodomized by his very good friend of over 40 years. So, yes, I do believe he is criminally responsible as all 'suspected' child abuse must be reported to the police, not just the university authorities. We are talking about innocent children here, who had no voice and no one to stand up for them when they needed it most.

Posted by: Cherry pi at November 09, 2011 09:25 AM (OhYCU)

171 The horsing around lingo that is being tossed around was introduced by one of the PSU administrators during their grand jury testimony, not by Joe Paterno.  That testimony was found to be not truthful, incidentally.

So let's not be confused here.  Paterno knew "something of a sexual nature" was going on between Sandusky and a pre-pubescent boy.  That's absolutely clear. And he knew he had the eyewitness to a crime (because anything of that nature is a crime) sitting in his living room who was looking for guidance as to what to do.  He (Paterno) should have called the police -- at the very minimum the campus police -- and told them to come over to talk with a witness.

174 I actually can't imagine what the groupthink must be like inside that football team. What kind of kids can this team of coaches turn out?

I am totally disgusted by this story. I can't comprehend the behavior of the grad student witness. Sure, I run first. Sure, I call daddy. Yes, I go to the coach and the A.D. BUT when I don't see the scumbag frogmarched into the station and sent to the slammer or anything happening within a day or so I CALL THE POLICE MYSELF.

I also read that some of the younger victims were reported, but no official action ever taken. THAT needs investigation.

As a member of the Purdue community, I would like to ask the Big Ten to throw this lousy program out of the conference. And yes I want Paterno fired. But HOW can the A.G. claim that these enabling monsters did "everything the law required?"

Where I come from, everyone who works with children is a MANDATED REPORTER of even the slightest suspicion of child abuse. Does this not apply in Pennsylvania when you run a freakin' camp? (Ranch? Maybe we should call it Sandusky's Petting Zoo?)

When the PS President and the A.D. told Sandusky he couldn't bring kids on campus, what HE heard was, "We don't care about the child-raping thing--just go do it somewhere else." They confronted him and GAVE HIM PERMISSION to continue. If there were any grown-ups left in America, Sandusky would get the gas chamber.

But our courts have decided the tortured life of a raped child isn't bad enough to kill over. And the protestors in PA have decided the shattered mind of a raped child isn't worth losing a job over.  God help us.

These animals are not only 100% recidivist they often accelerate their activity, so for Paterno to pass on a follow up on his reporting guaranteed more of the same if not worse.
If the Penn State Community had an iota of self awareness, let alone self respect Paterno would be banned immediately pending further investigation.

1998 – Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6's mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, "I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won't get it from you. I wish I were dead."

Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge

Sandusky was going to replace JoePa up until something happened and he retired in 1999.

Well gee whiz, with the benefit of hindsight, I think we know what that was.

Abso-KERMIT THE FROG-lutely!   The timeline is devastating for Joe Pa.   Here's a plausible alternate history:

1. Sandusky is in line to take over for Joe Pa in the late 1990s.

2. Paterno learns of allegations of pedophilia against Sandusky in 1998.

3.  Paterno and Penn State (redundant... Paterno is Penn State) eases Sandusky out in 1999 and into a "retirement" where he still has access to Penn State facilities (and to young boys) in order to protect Sandusky and, more importantly, to protect the money-making enterprise that is a big-time college football program.

4.  Paterno learns of new allegations against Sandusky in 2002 from a graduate assistant (basically like an intern... a guy trying to break into coaching and getting paid nothing).   He puts pressure (perhaps implicit) on the young graduate assistant to keep his mouth shut, gives him a job on his staff, and then pushes the allegations up the chain of command with sugarcoating (no anal rape... just "horsing around").   Let the Athletic Department deal with it and, wink, wink, make sure that nothing sticks to Joe Pa.

5.   Paterno and Penn State continue to look the other way for another nine years after that while Sandusky still has access to Penn State facilities (and to young boys).

Sickening.   Paterno can't be allowed to coach another game at Penn State, period.   Today's announcement of his retirement is him going rogue to try to leverage his power at the university to survive to the end of the year.   I don't think it's going to work.

The campus police are in fact the correct juridisction to report the crime. That all being said the fact that it likewise wasn't shouted to county and state authorities is a different matter.

I vowed before with the whitewash of Michael "hide the decline" Mann  never to give another dime to PSU. Given the cowardice the PSU administrators routinely evidence I see no reason to change that decision. Well, I can't cite the precise place in code, no, but obviously there IS a law that says he had to do something or a) the AD and VP wouldn't have been indicted for "failure to report" along with perjury and b) the cops wouldn't have felt it necessary to explicitly state that LEGALLY JoePa and the TA had fulfilled that requirement.

And that ignores the basic Moral Law that says you don't just let someone get raped.

What does "something similar" mean?  Was he found guilty?

More sexual molestation of young boys.  That's what "something similar" means.  The then DA dismissed the case, threw his laptop in the river (according to what I've heard) and then disappeared shortly thereafter.  (note: that's hear-say.  It is what I've heard, but I don't have specific links to corroborate).

PSU needs to be more concerned about what this is going to cost them than over some fucking football program.  They're going to pay a lot and they deserve to.

Since this is a public institution doesn't that mean that the taxpayers of Pennsylvania will be paying for this?

Actually, I directed that last post, 199, at the sad excuse-maker for Joe Paterno. Most that ought to happen to Joe Paterno is immediate retirement, and disgrace. Which falls somewhat short of what ought to happen to the guy he nonchalantly enabled to persist in his depraved taste for pederasty.

Now you'er just lying. No one blames him for what happened we're blaming him for not reporting it to the police.  At the very least the law did require the grad student to report the incedent to the actual police and Paterno gave him incorrect advice not to worry about it.

228 Since this is a public institution doesn't that mean that the taxpayers of Pennsylvania will be paying for this?

They get about 14% of their general operating budget and about 9% of their overall budget from state appropriations.

So, yeah, it's a "public institution," but most of the money is probably going to come from the private foundation.  And, I hope, the deep pockets of guys like Paterno.

229 This stuff does not happen in a vacuum. I read the pdf. His wife had to know something is not right. Sandusky gets up and is gone for quite a long time every time a boy sleeps over. The janitorial people knew he was a pervert. The campus police had a heads up that something was not right. A local football and wrestling coach knew that something was not right. Not to mention almost all administrators within the football program knew. But, hey, he's a good guy!! What's a little child rape among friends??

230 Listen to yourself...your blaming Joe for the boy being raped! You are clearly out of line! Don;t you belong on the MSNBC Blogs?

You know what, I do blame Joe for at least one of those boys being raped.  Joe knew there was a problem at least as early as 1998 (at least).  He fired Sandusky, but then allowed him access to the campus- right up through about a week ago.  That tells me, clearly, that Joe was less interested in the safety of those boys than in the image of Joe Paterno.

Moreover, the Second Mile Foundation was formed in the late 70's, by (you guessed it) Sandusky.  If he was using it to hunt little boys by 2002, he was almost certainly using it for the same thing in 1998.  He was almost certainly using it for the same thing from the Beginning.

Now, if JoePa knew there was a problem in 1998, and knew that (by then) this guy had been running a foundation that specialized in "helping at risk boys," for 20 years by then, it was morally required that he report those allegations to actual police who could then also have investigated the Second Mile Foundation.

Re: Paterno. Folks need to take a breath and use paper bag to prevent hyperventilation.  Personally I am not a huge fan of Paterno and think he needed to go many years ago, however, Fox News was reporting that Paterno did in fact report to the the Campus Police in addition to the verminous scum administrators who covered it up.

It does however make a compelling case with whats wrong with academia namely the bloated amounts of managemental beuracracy with no morals or soul and desire to manage the brand rather than provide quality education under reasonable cost structures.

234 Hello? It was reported! Why don't you try thinking with your Brain instead of your emotions!

Apparently not. A report to law enforcement would have absolved them of any wrong doing.

I personally think that even an unseemly delay in the report to law enforcement is morally wrong. We all have responsibilities as Citizens, some carry with them criminal penalty when they are not adhered to, some do not. A responsible Citizen when seeing a crime perpetrated against an individual who cannot defend themselves, at a minimum, notifies law enforcement.

We have every right to be livid pissed at someone who couldn't be a responsible Citizen, or in this case a decent human being, and this enabled a child rapist.

Where law prescribes reporting a crime; those that did not deserve to stand trial and explain themselves to a jury. Those that did may not be free of ire from the rest of us if they fundamentally failed as decent people by delays.

Posted by: Gregory of Yardale at November 09, 2011 09:44 AM (PLvLS)

236

Oh, and one other reason why Paterno has to go yesterday.   The inevitable theory of the lawsuit against Penn State will be that the university administration was afraid of Paterno's power within the university community, and therefore covered up the allegations.   If they let Paterno stay through the end of the year, or even through the end of the week, that will just be evidence that yes, in fact, they were scared of Paterno's power, and thought covering up child rape was the path of least resistance.

They're going to lose the lawsuit big anyway, but letting Paterno stay will just make it easier for the Plaintiffs.

Great read...

This, surely, is why people like Lauren Acquaviva sat on campus on the steps of Old Main for part of the day Tuesday with a sign that read: “All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

She was there with her 10-month-old son and husband. A woman walking by saw the sign and yelled, “Good for you!”

“Anyone who knew about it and chose not to call the police and not to call child services should resign,” she said. “If that includes Paterno, he’s not exempt from the same moral standards that everyone else is being held to. I think McQueary and Paterno and (university president) Graham Spanier need to resign because they chose to do nothing.

“I have a 10-month-old son,” she said. “I canÂ’t imagine how I would feel if I found out that something like that happened and that someone witnessed it and that other people knew about it and they chose to do nothing. I just think that if it were anyone but Paterno, the entire community would be calling for a resignation. But heÂ’s a figurehead, and we donÂ’t want to think that of him.”  http://tinyurl.com/c3smgno

279 279 Just another fire for JoePa to put out. I'm sure there were hundreds over his career. There's that many pedophiles at PSU? --------------------------------- No. But Paterno was responsible for 80 college-aged males. I'm sure there was trouble all the time. I think the mentality becomes "sweep it under the rug". Don't bring bad press upon the program. That's what I mean't.

If Sandusky had molested this boy at #OWS, his clean blanket privleges would have been revoked.  Everyone is up in arms about the Penn State tragedy, as we all should be, but it's been more than clear that sexual assaults are occuring at these Occupy rallies and the victims are being discouraged from reporting the crimes.  The #OWS 'leaders' are acting the same as the Penn State 'leaders' - keep things quiet, handle things internally - but only the PSU folks are feeling the heat for their idiocy.  I'm glad Sandusky will have to answer for his actions, and Penn State deserves every ounce of venom dropped on them because of this scandal.  When more reports of minors getting raped at #OWS rallies surface, I hope the public responds in the same manner.

295 Paterno aside for a moment, what kind of human being witnesses a child being raped and does nothing in that instant?  What was that McClusky guy thinking?  I can understand an immediate feeling of shock and disgust, but honestly to then just leave the scene and make a phone call to your Dad?  I'm just an average sized girl, but you can bet your ass I would have AT LEAST started screaming at the guy to get away from that child and done what I could to remove the child from that situation immediately and THEN called the police. Aside from the pedo himself, the inaction of someone who sees a child being sexually assaulted and walks away demonstrates a really tragic level of moral bankruptcy.

Is it for the same reason Andrew Sullivan defends Obama no matter how much of a SCOAMF he shows himself to be? Because you want to have Joe Paterno's baby?

The only semi-reasonable defense of this would be along the lines of, "Prosecutors have a history of over-zealously prosecuting child-abuse cases, so let's not rush to judgment." But that's not where you've staked out your position, is it? You're firmly in the territory of, "Even if there was child-rape (which you deny in direct contradiction of the testimony), Joe Paterno did nothing wrong in permitting it to happen."

It was on a segement where two experts on FOX were discussing it, just saw it over lunch. That being said, I agree kiddie fiddling is too an important manner to simply allow the higher up douche bag coverup artists to manage. Considering last night's little impromptu pep rally, they were justifiably terrified.

Yesterday morning, they realized they were in the midst of a public relations shit-storm that they couldn't make disappear just by ignoring it.  They're trying to save themselves and are scared that JoePa's going to go out there and make it worse... which is exactly what he's done, IMHO.

338

but it's really easy for everyone to judge if they don't know the families involved...."

Yeah. It is easy for me to judge. Because some things are BLACK AND WHITE.

And that means if I see a 10 yr old boy getting raped in the shower, then I'm putting a stop to it, no matter what it takes. And that includes killing the rapist.

And if that means an underling comes to me "distraught and shaken" and tells me something sexual occured in the showers between an old man and a 10 year old boy, then the FIRST thing I'm going to ask is "What happened?" Next, I'm calling the police.

Not only did this NOT happen, not a single person in-the-know  even tried to locate the rape victim.

Now imagine that pooer kid. The grad assistant who saw the rape testified that he made eye contact with the 10yr old as he was being raped.  So not only was the boy raped, HE KNEW AN ADULT SAW AND DIDN'T HELP!

How badly does that fuck you up? I'm guessing for the rest of your life.

Her point was that it's such a small town that almost everyone knows the people involved and is having a hard time squaring the horrific actions they can't deny with the people whose kids they went to school with.  The students have absolutely no excuse though as they don't know these people personally and it's totally about football for them.

But there are plenty of good people who live and work here (both for the university and elsewhere) who are disgusted and angered by the whole story. If you went here, you know there are plenty of idiotic students who are happy to riot/drink/gather for any reason at all. But there are vastly more people who are horrified by the situation and think that Joe, Spanier, McQueary, Curley, Schultz, and  Garban should go. My point was that someone I know and like and even generally respect and who has sons of her own still said "technically he's still innocent" in regards to Sandusky.  I didn't think to ask her if any of her sons went to one of those football clinics of his but they're of the right age.  Maybe when the shock has worn off she'll realize that.  I do have a tiny amount of sympathy for the residents since Paterno has been part of their lives forever but there is no excuse for the students at all.

352 Mare, I agree. I don't think you'll get that from the team at all. Perhaps former players. The students seem torn. People in town generally want him to go asap. All of the alumni that I know are absolutely furious. I know that a lot of calls and letters have gone out to the Board and to the Alumni Center. Surprisingly, there has been nothing public from the faculty, but those I know are beyond disgusted. I think it's a matter of time. There's a big trustee meeting tonight and then later in the week that Gov. Corbett is attending. I wouldn't be surprised to see Spanier gone tonight--I'd put it at 90%. For Joe, I'm guessing that it is more like 75%.

Posted by: freemo at November 09, 2011 12:11 PM (F87y/)

353 A last comment on this.  I honestly believe Joe Pa thinks he did nothing wrong.  That all he thinks about is what is good for the team to win. And in turn makes him look good.  Yeah I know he's supposed to be some great donor to causes whatever.  So who isn't that has money?  As I said before, we make these coaches and athletes into something they're not, gods.  And then we are disappointed when they turn out to be some of the not so nice people that exist everywhere.  This is more than just cheating, or gambling, or drinking, or selling trophies, etc.  This is more than cruelty to dogs.   If it was my kid ...

354 Polliwog, Well then that that reflects more on your friend than on the community as a whole. My experience actually living here and talking to many, many people (some longtime residents, some newer ones, some alumni, some faculty, some with no association) is radically different. So I just hope you stop using a broad brush to taint everyone here as a pedophile enabler. The students are stupid and look for any reason to prove their stupidity. Believe me when I say people are highly mortified by the "pep rally."

Shorter Fair Tax Forever: The information source I drew it from was mistaken: Paterno did not call the campus police.

Umm no, He contacted Schultz. Schultz is in charge of the Uni Police ergo he contacted the police. He didn't contact a shlub officer he contacted the guy in charge of the Uni-Police. Turns out Schltz is a dirtbag coverup artist in the PSU administration, who'ld have thought?

Should Paterno have contacted Pa. State Police or even Center County Police, dja think? Of Course.

yelling in letters to the Board of Trustees anyway

I wish I had that option.  Since I didn't attend myself and my husband passed away there's no one with standing in our family to yell at them.  Unless you think they'd listen to a student's spouse, in which case please give me their contact info so I can do something constructive.

368 Im a Penn State Alumni and State College resident. We support Joe because we know that Graham Spanier (President of PSU) is a disgusting predator himself, who, chases after college girls himself. He is the reason nothing was said, he is probably afraid his habits will come out. If anyone deserves the ire and hatred of people, its this truly despicable human being. He has ruined Penn State in so many ways and now his personal lack of ethics has destroyed a man who has done nothing but good for the town and college for 50 years. Until Spanier is run out of town, Penn State will not have changed its atmosphere of corruption and disgraceful behavior. He is the root cause not Joe Paterno.

His Second Mile Foundation takes its name from moral lessons in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, specifically from Matthew 5:41: "And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two."

Too bad he didn't read a little farther, to Matthew 18:6: "But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."

373 Quit calling Sandusky a pedophile. He is NOT. He is a pederast. Which is to say he is a HOMOSEXUAL. This is what you get with HOMOSEXUALS. This is how they create new HOMOSEXUALS. They look for young boys 9-16. Before they can grow beards. If they actually taught history at these colleges you would recognize the formula for HOMOSEXUALS that has existed for thousands of years. Pederast. Not Pedophile.

All you have to do is play a little What If. What if the janitor and the Grad Assistant had seen 2 players fighting, one much larger and stronger than the other. What if the larger one was strangling the smaller. Even absent watching the actual death would it be reasonable to assume one was watching a murder happen before their very eyes? Would it be expected that they'd intervene and/or immediately dial 911? You really think rape of pre-teen boys is a lesser offense than murder cause I don't. Paterno is scum. Every person who witnessed or even knew about these horrendous acts are scum. There wasn't a man among them. They abandoned those boys to their fate. Abandoned them. They passed along their responsibilities as men, hell as human beings, to others with the assumption that someone else would 'do something'. The lives and safety they risked weren't theirs it was those little boys who were raped by a monster straight out of every child's nightmares. This could have been stopped in 2000 at the very least. How many more were victimized? Paterno and all the rest deserve repudiation, prosecution and dismissal. I spit on his contributions and heritage. May he spend the rest of his life in prison, hiding his face in shame.

377 There's more.....
1998 formal investigation of Sandusky for sex abuse (he admitted to the allegations) - case closed without charges at or near time Sandusky retired in 1999.  Of course Joe Pa knew.... of course the PSU administration knew.

2002 report of sex abuse by Sandusky - face-to-face - by McCreary to Paterno... and Joe Pa expects everyone to believe "no specifics" discussed, but ENOUGH was shared for him to call and inform his superior....

After the 2002 event, did you know that Sandusky continued to run football camps in five (5) different locations around PA?  Yes, these were for teens.....  (sorry I lost the link for this).

Sandusky began his charity for at risk boys in 1977......surely he was engaging in his sick predatory grooming conduct as early as then?

Not 8 or 10 victims.....I surmise the number easily is 100 or more.....

Clean house at Penn State - fire Joe Pa, Spainer, Shultz, Curely, Mcreary.....the lot of them - then don't wait for victims to come forward....scour the records and find them.  Take all the retirement / severance $ from them and use it to fund a program to help the victims.

What does that say about mcqueary and jopa and the piece of shit cops that heard the fucking conversation all the way back in '98? Some anonymous moron in the peanut gallery is left to wish that the fucking TEN YEAR OLDS could have stepped up to the plate and ended this fucking travesty. DOOM. Pathetic. And, here in this thread, some a-hole named KeepingMyEyeonTheBall (JMsOK) is defending jopa? Yeah, let's focus on the victims. Nice solution, slush brain fucktard. Had your innocent & glorious hero jopa stepped up to the fucking plate, we wouldn't be talking about this horrible shit now and who knows how many victims would have been spared PTSD. Another factor for you, fucktard eyeontheball, how many of these victimized kids will carry the victimization forward and prey on children in the future?

How many predators are there in the world of sports and youth activities?

DON'T LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN ALONE EVER WITH A COACH, TEACHER or MENTOR.  Nobody can be trusted with your child.  I don't care if you think you know that coach, teacher or mentor.  A smart coach, teacher, mentor, etc. INVITES and REQUIRES parental presence at all lessons.  A smart parent stays in his or her child's business.  A smart parent volunteers incessantly and NEVER TRUSTS anyone else to do his/her job.  I know it's exhausting, but in this day and age of shameless immorality and lack of self-control, you just can't trust anyone.  (In some cases, not even grandpa and grandma.)

When I was in high school (20 years ago), the varsity basketball coach was my Algebra II teacher.  He flat out told the females in the class that if they had trouble with a problem and needed to speak to him about it, they had to come in a group.  He protected himself and the students.

And I never let teenage males babysit my kids.  Heck, I don't let anyone babysit my kids.

Paterno and others may be legally responsible and legally guilty according to one law or another compared to what they did or didn't do.  Or not.
But, as so many commenters have said, there's a moral dimension to this.  If Paterno had made the report as he asserts, his moral responsibility would have been to see if Sandusky had been arrested in the succeeding, say, three days, or to see if an investigation had been started.  If neither one, he should get back on the phone until something happened.

It's going to be interesting to see how the usual suspects (various interest and advocacy groups) line up on this one.

See the Frank Lombard Duke rape case to see so many conflicting narratives and interest groups that should have sounded like six freight trains collided that there was...silence.

390 So if one gets hearsay evidence of a crime (totally inadmissible in court), one become responsible for not reporting a crime to the police?  What the heck was the actual witness doing? Calling his father?

So now every bit of gossip you hear that possibly could be interpreted as involving a felony now requires you to report hearsay evidence to the police?  Great.  I think I've read about certain people around here doing immoral things with pudding.  I guess I must call the cops feds Interpol because this may be a crime in some jurisdiction Iran and the information was certainly bragged about across state lines internationally.

But I should realize I'm effing with the lawyers gravy train here.  It doesn't matter that the only person with direct knowledge of the the child rape failed to call the police.  Grad assistants don't have money.  Its always the nearest rich guy or organization that's at fault.  Unless its a union.

Oh, I forgot.  The grad assistant was likely under 26 is now considered a child himself.  Hang Joe instead.
