Four Senators Going Wobbly in Wisconsin?
— Ace

Bad news at Hot Air -- Walker's approval rating is down to 43% (he was elected with 52% of the vote), and almost all of that erosion is due to Republicans failing to support him at the high rates you'd want them to.

And there's a report that four of the senators are thinking about some kind of compromise, but Allah thinks that might be some messaging by the GOP to encourage people to support them.

There's also a good point he makes about the recall: If the fold, they'll still face a recall, this time from the conservatives.

Putting aside the substance of the dispute: the fleebagging tactic cannot be incentivized by rewarding it with a victory.

3 Well then we had better get serious about passing this without the quorum. If the problem is we're bleeding from this, then just take the hit and get past it so we can start healing.

5 If this tactic is successful (as it has been so far) what is to stop every single state legislature that has a Democrat minority from doing the exact same thing?

And then what will we have?

Chaos baby. Chaos.

9 I really hate it when Allahpuss is all bent out of shape over polls like these. Walker won't cave. His approval rating right now is just a fucking reflection of what the state is going through. I may not like all of Christie's positions but he knows. He fell into the 40s and is now enjoying a good rating in NJ.

26 O/T:  from Rubio's FB page

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio issued the following statement regarding the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA):

“I want to thank Speaker Boehner and the House Republican leadership for taking action to defend this critical law that was enacted by a bipartisan majority in Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton. It is unfortunate that President Obama decided to no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act. While much of the debate in Washington is focused on creating jobs and growing our economy, we should not sit by while this administration makes profound and regrettable decisions based more upon the politics of the day than the words of our Founding Fathers. This law protects one of our most sacred institutions and because of the House’s actions today, it will be defended.”

I like Walker and I respect him for hanging in there, but he needs to move this along somehow. That is probably part of the problem with his numbers right now. This is going on too long. Maybe they should divide it up and start voting..do something so that it does not look like they are just flailing around.

36 31 --the fleebagging tactic cannot be incentivized by rewarding it with a victory.

Frankly, anything less than jail for the fleebaggers is an offense to the intellect and a swipe at our nation.  Every state is guaranteed a Republican form of government and fleebaggers are denying that CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to the state.  There should be federal charges against the fleebaggers.

Otherwise, this whole exercise in government is nothing but a really, really bad joke.

I have been surprised by the fact that apparently they can do this and get away with it..I think rule changes should take place so that if a bunch of people just decide to bug out, then the need for a quorum can be waived..if states did something like that then these people would not leave in the first place, there would be nothing to gain.

Agreed, obviously. If this is the way a large minority acts - and is accepted - then we've essentially abandoned representative government. Why would any minority party ever respect the results of an election? If you lose, you shut down government by not participating, by not even delaying by filibuster or other legitimate maneuver? Horseshit is what that is.

Punish the tar out of the fleebaggers and make as many party-serving, "draconian" decisions and votes as possible. Fast-track it, too. Make those derelict of office hate the results of being away more painful than being present.

These senators will be up for vote in two years - if this finished up in a few weeks most folks won't remember or care.  Many union members will boost turnout but they won't vote for any turncoats anyway.  So, I hope the other three republican senators that are wavering think about that.

I can't get into Ras's internals, because you have to be a premium member to access it, BUT the last poll showing similar #s had 30% of the respondents as union members.   Everyone knows that if you use words like rights when asking if he's doing the right thing re: collective bargaining people will answer in the negative.  ALL of these polls ask if you agree that collective bargaining rights should be taken away.   When you break down the questions individually concerning reduction of wages & benefits, whether the state should be collecting benefits, and whether people shoud have the right to opt out of being in a union the answers change.

I wish that those on our side when reporting on these polls would look internally before rushing to report them.  They are not always what they seem on the surface.

The R's also need to explain how taxpayer money is used to benefit union leadership and the Dem party.  And how the bill benefits union members from being forced to join a union and pay dues.

And just who is gonna give them air time?

Yes.  Maintaining a calm, reasonable and in-control stance makes the other guy look bad and your side look good, especially to the mushy middle.  It can also cause the adversary to go to worse extremes because they aren't getting a rise of of you.

This tactic works one-on-one with people too.  If you find yourself in an argument with someone hot under the collar, but you remain calm, sometimes it just pisses them off more.  Then you win the argument because they've lost self-control and you haven't.

Not that I'm referring to my ex-husband or anything.

Yeah, it looks like Fox's e-mail alert was poorly worded.  They made it sound like the notices would go out in a month...not that they would go out now and be effective in a month.

Snipped from the AP:

Walker informed state employee unions on Friday that he intends to issue layoff notices to 1,500 workers that would be effective on April 4 to realize cost savings that otherwise would come from a part of the stymied bill forcing those employees to pay more for their benefits.

State agencies have 15 days to develop layoff plans before individual employees are notified. Walker said in a statement from his office that the layoff notices could be rescinded if the Senate passes the bill before then.

Agreed. Move forward, act professionally, and state that responsible people are required to lead the State out of financial ruin and that State business must continue addressing all important needs of the citizens. When given the chance, explain clearly the union issues, but work in other state business that is being resolved. Don't make a big deal out of anything anymore. Don't play so much for narrow, effective sound bites since the local media is not on the working legislators' side.

The voters who are interested know what's going on in WI by now. If they still don't WRT the Teacher's Union/Fleebaggers, then they aren't voters you need to worry about in two years. They're fickle at best and kowtowing to them now is an exercise in futility.

Again, behave professionally and deliberately and let the sideshow go hysterical. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Move the conservative reform agenda and the results will speak for themselves. Begging the hostile children to halt their tantrum is a waste of energy and capital. Let 'em turn blue, pass out, and realize that mommy isn't there to be held hostage to infants.

Four Senators are not wobbling.   If they were, why would they have voted, just yesterday, to change Senate rules to bring the fleebaggers back to the Senate floor by force, if necessary.   The left has been reporting for the last 2 weeks that 3 or 4 were wobbling.   Helps to keep the moonbats motivated and stirred up.

Walker said 2 weeks ago that if layoffs were to happen they would start in April, because that's when he would have to find ways to maintain his budget.  Notices will be sent starting today at 5:00, if the fleebaggers don't return so the bill can get passed.

174 BTW, Gov Walker was on TV nearly every night giving a news conference and it didn't do him a bit of good.  So either he's a terrible salesman or the public just hates what he's doing.

The chief executive administrator should utilize a professional spokesman to promote the agenda "nightly" or repeatedly. Call on either John Stossel or Mark Steyn to make the nightly appearance debates between "talking heads" (Hillary's latest hate rant, replacing the old "right wing conspiracy" with her own media personalities). Being the Governor need not mean being the State's equivalent of a TOTUS.

Learn from Obama's mistakes. Most of America wearied of Obama quickly given his constant exposure that quickly became overexposure, demanding the media attention and public adoration, always turning things into the personal as if every issue is about Obama's years growing up and relationships he either had or lacked, which poem he lamely read, not yet having a TOTUS from which to impress his to-be-wife who had not yet found any reason in her life to be proud of being American.

This is why I asked a few days ago whether Gov. Walker can trust the State Police he's sent out to visit these dem senator's homes to arrest them if they're there.  We've already seen the local police standing in "solidarity" with the unions; why should the State Police be any different?  I don't like painting all law enforcement with such a broad brush, but you have to admit it's fishy.  If I thought it was at all feasible (let alone legal), I'd recommend getting a round-the-clock Tea Partier watch on these Fleebaggers' homes.

Posted by: MWR at March 04, 2011 02:35 PM (CA2NO)

177 I'll try to educate you guys some more...

When Scott Walker ran for Governor, he was extremely well known in SE Wisconsin, but it the northern and western part of the state, he was just a generic Republican to them (and he didn't do well vs mark neumann in the primary in those areas).  Jim Doyle was hated everywhere, the Dems as a whole were unpopular, so Walker cruised to victory with the same percentage as Ron Johnson.  They weren't voting specifically for Scott, but rather against the Dems.  The north and west parts of the state also have much more liberal republicans as a rule, and i've heard that those are the areas where he has been bleeding Republican support.  Add in the fact that there is no real talk radio in those markets and the only support Scott is getting (from guys like Belling and Sykes) isn't being heard.  Those Republicans simply are not used to seeing a real Conservative in office.  They are used to the Dale Schultz's of the world, who are pretty much just conservative Democrats.  Scott Walker is nothing like a Dale Schultz.  We know that here, but they don't.

One fact that does go against a mass exodus of GOP Senate support.  If this fails and the Dems succeed here, his Governorship is a failure and laughingstock a few months in.  Even I have a hard time believing they would torpedo him like that.  The Dems dropped the nuclear bomb with the walkout.  They can't do it again with the overall budget bill or anything else they disagree with.  This was their stand and the GOP has to match them in diligence.

The polls wouldn't be any better if he just raised taxes on everybody instead of making cuts that's for sure.

what pisses me off the most is the double standard is that if he had raised taxes the unions and lefties would be screaming "hey this guy's a tax raiser, he sucks" but if he doesn't "I mean Gov just raise taxes, it'll fix anything" it's just how if Bush spends like crazy it's "reckless and wasteful" but when Obama doubles down and spends like crazy on roids it's "investment"

Walker has said 2 or 3 times that he can't do it because the only reason he is doing it is because it directly affects the budget.

How many of you know that the left have been filing court cases against Walker for the last couple weeks?   He's been fighting them in everything he's trying to do.  They took him to court to say that he didn't have the right to close the capital building at night when he was trying to kick their asses out so they could clean the building.   He won that pretty much last night.   They can only be in the building, with permits during normal operating hours, starting Monday morning.   He's trying to do the things in a reasonable, patient kind of way.

Those fuckers have been calling in bomb threats where Walker has spoken, storming restaurants where Repubs are trying to have dinner, threatening businesses that don't put union signs in their windows.  Now, it is coming out that they were the ones restricting access to the capitol building during normal hours, and trying to make it look like it was Walker.   Cops wearing t-shirts with their names on duct tape stuck to those t-shirts have been standing at the doors.   NOT the state polce that Walker had to call in.

When did the Republican party go off the rails?

When were they on the rails?  Even Gingrich who talked a good game turned out to be a squish when it mattered.  Part of the problem is being in Washington.  It's a Democratic city.  The government employees (outside of the elected officials) are mostly Democrats.  The media is overwhelmingly Democratic...so Republicans living and working there get a very skewed view of the mood of the country.  One key way to ameliorate this is have our guys sign pledges or just agree as a matter of policy to stay out of Washington, D.C. as long as possible.

Good read, but what I found interesting is this paragraph:

On Thursday afternoon at Brigham Young University in the conservative town of Provo, students in the hushed halls of the Joseph Smith Center studied the Book of Mormon in front of a glass diorama. The exhibit depicted the gold plates from which Mormons believe their prophet, Joseph Smith, decoded the gospel by looking through spectacles made from sacred stones called Urim and Thummim. Other students turned textbook pages under a showcase of ancient artifacts, which Mormons believe attest to the presence of their precursors in North America before the arrival of Christopher Columbus. In the hallway, paintings hung from the walls, depicting Mormon milestones: The Hebrew Lehi family, the ancestors of the Native Americans, loaded a ship in preparation for their voyage from Jerusalem to the Americas. A painting titled "Christ in America" paid tribute to Jesus's appearance in the New World.

Yeah, Morons are Christians??

And it's not a cult?  Rove is right, these fuckers are nuts.

"sorry if we were too loud, hope we didn't disturb your dinner".  The guy said "hell no, man I learned alot listening to you guys.  Keep fighting".  That was pretty encouraging.

239 The Republicans got in power and they got very cozy with the lobbyists. That's their major problem. Three minor problems: 1. They believe the crap they read in the press about the base and about their own party. 2. They are being advised by fools and incompetents. 3. Leftists bombard their offices with phone calls pretending to be supporters and they trick the Republicans into going soft on their core values.

250 >>I'm so disappointed to those ones in blue..!eleventy I learned a valuable lesson about unions early in my career. I was running a branch office of a telecom company that had a union dominated service organization. When I first got there it felt like there were actually two companies, the real one and the union. My branch was scheduled to move down a floor in the high rise where we had our offices. It was scheduled for a Friday and I had filled out all the proper forms to have the union service group come move our computers and telephones ( we literally weren't allowed to carry any of the technology products ) but the service never showed. At 5 I told everyone to pick up their stuff and move it themselves. The following Monday the union filed a grievance against me and I had to go to a meeting with them and an arbitrator. I explained my case and said something like "Hey, we all work for the same company and I needed to get my people back moved so they could respond to customers. The union rep said, and this I remember clear as day "I don't work for the company, I work for the union". Almost all unionized people operate under this mindset. Fucking madness.

One of the problems we have is that the news doesn't give us a lot of detail,  and a lot of the Wisconsin papers are pretty far left.

It's really easy to sit in another state and get impatient.  We all would like to see this resolved,  but we aren't the ones having to deal with lawsuits,  crowds of demonstrators,  bomb threats,  etc.

257 AD, would you trade this batch of Republicans for the 1998 Republicans?

I would.

See, I just wouldn't.  There's at least the possibility of victory with this bunch, whereas we know what happened in the 1995 budget fight, we know what happened later when they implied they were going to pick another budget fight, we know what happened during Clinton's impeachment, and we know what happened with the overwhelming bulk of the Contract With America--nothing.  People blame the media, but the polls in 1995 were starting to go our way towards the end of the fight.  The leadership just lost their nerve and caved.

Sure, we may suck this time, but it's the difference between a lotto ticket that's already lost and one you haven't played yet.  The odds may be long, but at least there's the possibility of victory.

And how do they explain this guy?

Far Left protester Patrick J. Knauf, 43, of Eau Claire was arrested on Wednesday for the violation of making a bomb scare under state statute 947.015.

He was released on a $3,000 signature bond.

On Wednesday a bomb threat was made at an aviation business in Eau Claire just hours after Governor Scott Walker spoke there. Police brought in a man who was protesting this week against the Republican governor. The Pierce County Herald reported:

An investigation continues into a bomb threat made this week at an aviation business in Eau Claire, just hours after Governor Scott Walker held a news conference there.

Authorities said a 43-year-old Eau Claire man allegedly called in a threat to Heartland Aviation on Wednesday evening. The facility is next to the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in Eau Claire. The man is free on a signature bond. No charges have been filed yet, but the man is due back in Chippewa County Circuit Court on April 19th.

Investigators said the man took part in public demonstrations at the airport on Monday and Wednesday. His home was searched yesterday, and police are checking phone records and interviewing people. Eau Claire Police have asked for tips with more information.

THIS.  I think Walker is doing a bang up job of holding steady and not giving a lot of ground.

On the other hand, this isn't just a WI issue anymore.  I wish to God it was, but it's not.  What happens in WI is going to send out powerful waves across the whole country.  And while the pressure from inside WI is already intense, the pressure on both sides from OUTSIDE Wisconsin continues building.  I respect Gov. Walker's steadfast stance, but he's on the national stage, and that pressure isn't going to let up until something gets done.  There needs to be some kind of movement; something that will show not only the folks in WI, but all those watching around America and the world, that progress is being made in the right direction.  Something to counter stories like this one, that the GOP is getting "wobbly."  As Terry Pratchett has written, rumor can go round the world a dozen times before the truth has got its boots on.  You've got to head it off at the pass to keep people on the straight and narrow path.  Gov. Walker doesn't have to be as outspoken as Chris Christie, but there needs to be something.

Just my $.02.

I think Gary said it best when confronting Stan's dislike of his religion.

"Maybe us Mormons do believe in crazy stories that make absolutely no sense, and maybe Joseph Smith did make it all up. But I have a great life and a great family, and I have the Book of Mormon to thank for that. The truth is, I donÂ’t care if Joseph Smith made it all up, because what the Church teaches now is loving your family, being nice and helping people. And even though people in this town might think thatÂ’s stupid, I still choose to believe in it. All I ever did was try to be your friend, Stan, but you're so high and mighty you couldn't look past my religion and just be my friend back. You've got a lot of growing up to do, buddy. That's the bomb threat I noted.

There was a restaurant where some Repub Senators were in last night that they saw a woman pacing outside, then stuck her head in the door, and immediatley got on her cell phone.   A few minutes later about 10 union thugs showed up, and stormed inside screaming and yelling.   The restaurant owner and some of his staff tried to kick them out and the thugs started pushing and shoving them.  Police had to be called.   Come to find out the woman was head of some union, and she set it up.

I have no doubt she's never voted Dem in her life.

Good think she kept that hidden from her fellow apparatchiks.

Yeah, here's the thing, we're in Texas, right to work state with a strong independant streak.  Unions are not popular around here, and I'm sure she only belonged to one because she had to.  But she's the type that will stand up for herself and whatever she perceives her side to be.  It was the union then, and it wouldn't be now.  I'm not sure she would see herself now, as an entrepreneur, as similar to post office managment in any way.  Would.not.compute.

If this doesn't make sense, maybe you'd just have to know her.

Almost all unionized people operate under this mindset. Fucking madness.

There are quite a few like that out there, but I wouldn't go as far as to say "almost all" unionized people have that mentality.

I'm not a big fan of unions, and support what Walker is trying to do.  I work in a "closed shop" state, meaning that I had no real choice but to join the union (CWA) when I took my current telco job.  If I could opt out, I probably would.  In terms of pay grade, it's the highest you can go in the company without becoming "management" (most "management" employees don't actually manage anyone).

I just don't see much of that sort of thing here.  No question that the effects are there; the senority bullshit, generous health insurance coverage, it being nearly impossible to fire lazy employees unless they're caught stealing or drinking on the job, etc.  However, the extreme "us versus them" type of attitude isn't at all pervasive here.

Thankfully there's not been a strike in the 10 years I've been here, otherwise I'd want to kick my own ass were I assigned to mandatory "strike duty".

Talking about my SIL and hearing about Erik's father, it occurs to me that a lot of good people, as individuals, get caught in the union trap, oftentimes through no fault of their own.  They can be easily manipulated by the union propoganda, coersion, and even through benign forces such as friendships.  Might be good to keep in mind as we think about the people in WI and elsewhere.  The individual union members are mainly just pawns.  The bad guys are union managment and the Dem party, and the young lefty hippie protesters who don't know any better.

And Erik, what is frustrating about the police and firemen is that I think the public does and would strongly support them even without being unionized.  Especially after 9/11 they're considered heroes.

It just seems that it would be so reasonable to say that we WI repubs have a majority that lets us a) pass many many really good pieces of non-financial legislation sans quorum, and b) write more bills while we wait.  And while we are waiting for for you fleebaggers to return, we're going to crank out all of them, including new ones that come to mind.  And, as frosting on the cake, we're deconstructing the budget to consist of only financial matters with no linkage to any union or non-financial matters.

314 I heard a phone call very late at night from a guy who was a professional who was brought up in a union family.  He said it took years in college before he realized that everyone didn't belong to a union, that there was a private sector out there and you could be your own boss if you wanted.  He said his family was angry that he was going out on his own and not joining a union.  He said if you are raised with the union mentality it's hard to break free of it and caused him lots of hard feelings and schisms in his family, some of which still aren't healed.

Beck is sort of saying that the union people aren't really aware that the unions have been wholly taken over by the communists and the socialists and if they knew who they were standing with, they'd be horrified and that when they finally figure it out, it will be too late.

I have to say, it's getting harder and harder not to really dislike all union people.  The way things are going I'm sure a lot of Americans are feeling this way.

315 140 teacher retirement requests approved

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay School Board has approved a large number of retirement requests from teachers and administrators.

With the future of the state budget uncertain, 140 teachers and 15 administrators asked to join the emeritus program. That works out to about 1 out of every 12 teachers in the district.

The emeritus program gives one full year's salary paid over three years. That is in addition to pension benefits. In return, the retiree provides 10 days of service to the district each year during that time. The emeritus program is something that has been negotiated into the teachers' contract through collective bargaining.

Last year 26 teachers and staff members applied for the program.

The thing that I don't understand is that Walker has already said he wouldn't be taking collective bargaining away from the police or firemen, because they can't afford a police or firemen strike.   I assume that hasn't changed; please correct me if I'm wrong or mistaken.  Through collective bargaining these public servants would still be able to negotiate for generous benefits -- benefits, I might add, that they deserve a HELLUVA lot more than the public teachers do.  I have very little problem with this, besides my overall distrust of unions in general, public unions in particular.  So I see police standing on this hill with other public sector unions and I want to say, "Stop!  Just STOP."

The same goes for modern leftists. Many unions were chartered to exclude blacks and Irish from the labor market in certain industries. I'm damn near convinced that if the KKK came out in favor of public housing Lefties would start cutting up their bedsheets.

I have to say, it's getting harder and harder not to really dislike all union people.  The way things are going I'm sure a lot of Americans are feeling this way.

That's a bridge too far for me. Those are the people we have to reach. Of course a lot of the reasons behind blind support for the unions is emotional and reflexive, but if we can't make calm, reasoned appeals for a less statist country, we shouldn't call ourselves conservatives.

The bottom line is that unions use police and fire as pawns on a chessboard the same way any time some fucking Commie get's in a mayor's office.

Whenever it comes to cuts or lack of budget increases, safety is the first to go, as if anything else in their bloated, precious fucking budget can't be touched.

Fucking bastards hold us hostage by threatening to limit safety workers.

Case in point. Two years ago,  Mayor Coleman of Columbus threatened to lay off 300 firefighters from the 1,700 that were employed if he didn't get his budget increase passed. That would have caused a "rolling brown out" which means fire stations would to close a couple days a week, thereby increasing emergency response time.

I repeat: These fuckers are holding our well-being hostage to their selfish demands.

I keep thinking there ought to be someway to not touch the people say, 50 and above at all, tell the people between 25 and 50 that they have to keep paying in with reduced benefits going forward, but they can double/triple their 401 contributions, and then everyone under 25 or else say everyone who starts working starting on 2012 (or whenever) you pay in but can contribute to a 401k type thing that you never have to pay taxes on....right up until the last person collecting Social Security croaks and then it's just done altogether?

The GOP, at least the establishment types, aren't going to pull a rope-a-dope because they don't know how. All they know how to do is be a minority; that's why when the word "compromise" comes up, it's more often than not referring to the Republicans that have given something away.

Walker.  Wanting the speak up  for Walker, but not wanting to lose decades of hard work (and dozens of staff jobs) in this train wreck.

358 "Our side really needs to start pushing pack on this collective bargaining rights bullshit."

Collective bargaining catching on with the public is about as realistic as when Newsweek announced that we're all socialists. They're skewing perception, and they wouldn't have to be, if they were doing their jobs and reporting facts.

Now Rubio is talking the talk. What do you think about a freshman Senator's chances at getting elected POTUS ?

Republicans need to win OH and FL,, much like in 2004. The 2008 election wasn't a sea change because the market crash was driving the electorate. Sen. Marco Rubio is the most likely Republican vice presidential nominee. It's why Republicans are holding their convention in Tampa, Florida. The best offense is a good defense, in sports and politics.

Hmmm.  14 Wisconsin state senators running from their job so that the duly elected government CANNOT do their job. There was a fair election. They are trying to overthrow a duly elected government. I CALL IT TREASON! That is what it is.
