Below the fold is an excellent old movie on YouTube TV HD, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Click on full screen. The director, Byron Haskin, was the same guy who directed War of the Worlds and several other things, like Captain Sindbad, my all-time favorite Sindbad (note, spelled with two d's), and From the Earth to the Moon. He also worked on Star Trek, The Menagerie and a couple of other Trek things, I think. He started out in art direction and special effects and cinematography.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars rates a 92% at Rotten Tomatoes. Not bad for a cheapy sci-fi thing from the 60's. You can tell he knew how to get a lot of bang for the buck. Look at what he was able to do with the sets and special effects. For example, near the end, there is "ice" melting very quickly. I have no idea how he did that. I don't even think animal fat melts like that. The snow appears real in every scene but one where they had to bury a monkey. Maybe the other snow was real. I can't really tell. There is an ash fall that is well done. He even went to the trouble of piling the snow and ash in drifts in a very realistic, windblown way in corners and in sheltered areas. All of the spaceship and gadget tech looks great. All the exposed rock and mineral formations are plausible and a little odd--exactly what you'd expect on another world. Nice touch on the way the alien ships flit around in a freaky, unnatural (alien) way.

For the time period and the money? Awesome. The special effects work doesn't make the movie, though; it just enhances it. It doesn't get in the way. It helps in the suspension of disbelief. All that, plus a good story and passable acting makes for a great adventure movie.

I tend to focus on money at times: Could they have done it cheaper, or could they have done it better for the same amount of money? And did that [whatever expensive thing] actually make the movie better? I do the same thing with buildings and architecture. "They could have done the same thing for a lot less money" is the acid-test, kiss of death judgment. Even worse: "I could have done that better for less money."

In that regard, btw, Moon (2009) still blows me away. They made that movie for five million.

And talk of money reminds me of an excellent A&E documentary, Halloween: The Inside Story. It's great because it tells you a lot about making movies in a short time, and because John Carpenter is a very interesting man. You can tell he's a no-bullshit, very practical person. For example, his chief concern regarding the Halloween sequels is whether he gets a check. He also appears to be a man of few words, laconic. Just enough speech to get the job done. He doesn't appear deal in lofty ideas about art; he's more of a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust kind of director. In Halloween, he found ways of using the money available to him in the most efficient way possible. And talk about getting bang for the buck. The movie cost about $300 thousand. It made something like a hundred million.

Really, it's one of the best documentaries I can recall ever having seen. It's tight, well put together, and loaded with information. It's embedded below too.

I love Rushmore, but I realize it is a bit overly precious. I think it speaks very well to a certain type of person, probably of a certain age.

Basically, you have to have been smart enough to have had delusions of intellectual grandeur, but not smart enough that those delusions were ever close to reality.

That sort of bittersweet moment of the gifted and talented (tm) crowd when they realize they aren't quite as gifted and talented as they'd been led to believe.

24 Great piece by Steyn in the sidebar. I like that he identifies the administration as a whole, and McQuery in particular, as failing the moral test. As lost in the outrage earlier, Paterno screwed up but not as much as others involved in this, and Sandusky is the real villain.

In all seriousness, back when I hung out at NYU film school (my friend at the time was the schmuck who paid tuition) "Halloween" was the holy grail of film in that dollar for dollar, when you compare it's budget to its box office gross, it was the highest grossing film of all time. It might still be. Maybe "Big Fat Greek Wedding" is a contender. But "Halloween" cost a buck-three-eighty to produce and made over $100 million within a 2 year period since its initial release. Forget about the sequels and how much it has made in the past 30 years.

One of my favorite things to do on Sunday afternoon is to go to boxofficemojo and look at the grosses.  I'm mainly interested in return on investment.  For example, Paranormal Activity 3 cost $5 million to make, so far has done $101 million US alone.  Courageous cost $2 million, has made just under $32 million.  Compare that to Puss In Boots which cost $130 million and has made $111 million in the US.  Which of those would you rather invest in?

The formula is that studios will cater to males between 11 and 22 because they buy the bulk of the tickets. Hence bigger explosions, car chases and shootouts. Aside from family films and animation, we produce very little of what I would consider quality films. Sorry, but 30 years in the biz as a screenwriter and having worked for a couple of Academy Award winning producers has shaped my opinions.

61 My take on the cover up (just my take) is it was a case of disbelief/denial powered by the desire not to destroy the culture/world they lived in -- i.e. a culture dominated by *PENN STATE FOOTBALL* (anyone who has gone to a big football school should know exactly what that culture entails and how important it is to the very identity of those who embrace it). I think everyone who heard of or suspected Sandusky's wrongdoings thought somewhere in their conscious or unconscious mind "this will destroy Penn State football" and so they pushed it away because they were unwilling to shatter their own world/their own culture. It's the same kind of reason feminists turned a blind eye to Clinton's serial harassment/possible rape of women. What's one or a dozen women in the face of a greater cause? the advance of the liberal agenda! What's one (or a dozen, or a hundred) pre-teen boys in the face of protecting the overarching entity *PENN STATE FOOTBALL*. Of course, not reporting merely sealed the fate they were trying to avoid. If you are interested in never having shoes that smell, plus warding off sickness all winter, I highly suggest the purchase of Theives Oil and a sprayer.

Don't know what it is about that shit, but a little sparay in a pair of tennis shoes once a month, and a spray in the face once in a while, and you will never get sick, and the shoes will never smell. It might even ward off the effects of milling through a crowd at OWS.

I recently watched "More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead" (a new retrospective documentary on "The Return of the Living Dead" with the cast and crew). Beverly Randolph, who played the "good girl" role, mentioned that when she went to audition for O'Bannon (the director of RotLD) at his house, she came inside and went into the living room to find a porno on the TV and several guns sitting around.  She said she freaked and got out of there pretty quickly.  Some of O'Bannon's colleagues let her know that he was a harmless oddball and to give him another chance.  She ended up with the part and had no issues with him during the shoot, just realized he was kind of weird.

Good documentary, by the way, if you are a real fan of the film.  It was made by the same group that made "Never Sleep Again" (a 4-hour doc about the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series) and "His Name Was Jason" (about the "Friday the 13th" series).

80 I had an idea for a movie about if some of the space invasion movies from the 50s were real and world puts aside their differences to start a Planetary Defense Force that takes the battle to Mars with the Orion design spaceships to defeat the Martians. However, the Martians are pretty weak because they live on a dying planet. Then the shit gets real when the aliens from Independence Day show up years later and get their asses handed to them before they even reach the asteriod belt.

Said hi on the semi-annual occurance of seeing them in the driveway at the same time as me. 10 years later thought it was about time to strike up a conversation, and it soon got around to how the government used TV speakers to listen to their conversations in the house. 145 @139: Well, it's only about a 5 hour drive back to Connecticut, anyway - you should come up once in a while. I wouldn't mind Washington because of the museums and grand architecture (at least in the monumental part of town; the rest of the city looks like a disgraceful dump, IMO). But you're right - New England has a charm all its own. And my part of Connecticut is especially nice - an hour to the ocean, 90 minutes to downtown Manhattan, 30 minutes to the Appalachian trail. Even Boston only 3 hours away. What more can anyone want? We were at Concord & Lexington at the national park with the Battle Road - THAT was pretty amazing, after having read a book about it ("Paul Revere's Ride"). To read the book that detailed every step of the battle, and then to actually bike on the very same dirt road the Brits marched on is something everyone should experience. It was always fun to watch the light go on in their heads when they'd read first-person accounts of the smaller skirmishes as we made our way to Concord. 

Nothing like watching them really understand what it means to be an American - some of them only realizing it for the first time.

My job did (DoD civilian) did a Gettysburg staff ride a couple years back. Fascinating. They had us read some nonfiction essays, read "The Killer Angels," and watch "Gettysburg" ahead of time, and then we did the staff ride.

We got to walk all of Pickett's Charge, with the docent saying "Now you're in cannon range, now they're firing on you with grape shot, now you have to climb over that fence, and then you'll be in rifle range." We were given the name of a Confederate soldier at the beginning, and at the end we found out whether we lived or died.

My dude lived; he lived until the end of the war, which I found surprising since before Pickett's Charge he'd apparently been a wagon driver...

OMG, the aforementioned good buddy has one I am salivating for (apparently it has something of a shady past, but he keeps promising it to me, and I don't really give a shit).  It's a .38 and so small and wonderful, just perfect for the dainty-handed.  I will find out from him exactly what it is and let you know.  I'm sure there are plenty of them out there that have not been involved in felonies.

I assume that if someone enters my home uninvited they are intent on doing me harm. Believe me when I say I have seen enough bodies who didn't pull the trigger and they ended up in my father's care. Not a happy ending.  My sis has a Beretta I believe and rifles.  She also has concealed carry permit.  She wouldn't hesitate either.

307 Glocks have very well designed and totally enclosed mechanisms. They don't have issues with jamming or getting gummed up by water/dirt/the elements because of the design.

Ak47s do jam and have a nasty habit of exploding if the gas tubes are dented. The mechanisms are built to function with such loose tolerances that they usually work with a sea of grease, even if contaminated, or if heavily corroded. Of course, don't expect much accuracy with those loose tolerances, the parts can sometimes melt or fail from bad materials with prolonged firing, and if they jam it's going to be serious enough that you are totally fucked. Having the charging handle part of the sometimes quite hot ejection port isn't a great design either. Your had right next to the ejection port while clearing a misfired round isn't the safest thing too!

Robinson Crusoe on Mars: OMG I frigging LOVE that movie! 

Saw it when it came out at the theatre, sitting in the front row.  Blew me away as a 5th grade kid, and stayed to see it twice.  I remember the red sky really hooked me in.  And those alien ships, wow!  Very scary, in a "you can't escape them" kind of way.  It was a fairly thoughtful script, very intimate with one character carrying 90% of the whole thing. 

Too bad Mars didn't turn out like it did there, before all the subsequent Mars probes forever dashed the hopes of kids that it might just be possible to survive there without a ton of equipment and special science.  And we'll never get moderate/slow paced fare for kids like this ever again.
