Friday Evening Document Dump: Obama Says Syria Is Bad
— DrewM

It only took 75 or so dead to get President Awesome to take a break from his two day, six fundraiser trip to California to issue a written statement chastising the Syrian regime for attacking its own people.

The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the use of force by the Syrian government against demonstrators. This outrageous use of violence to quell protests must come to an end now. We regret the loss of life and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims, and with the Syrian people in this challenging time.

The Syrian Government's moves yesterday to repeal SyriaÂ’s decades-old Emergency Law and allow for peaceful demonstrations were not serious given the continued violent repression against protesters today. Over the course of two months since protests in Syria began, the United States has repeatedly encouraged President Assad and the Syrian Government to implement meaningful reforms, but they refuse to respect the rights of the Syrian people or be responsive to their aspirations. The Syrian people have called for the freedoms that all individuals around the world should enjoy: freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and the ability to freely choose their leaders. President Assad and the Syrian authorities have repeatedly rejected their calls and chosen the path of repression. They have placed their personal interests ahead of the interests of the Syrian people, resorting to the use of force and outrageous human rights abuses to compound the already oppressive security measures in place before these demonstrations erupted. Instead of listening to their own people, President Assad is blaming outsiders while seeking Iranian assistance in repressing Syria's citizens through the same brutal tactics that have been used by his Iranian allies. We call on President Assad to change course now, and heed the calls of his own people.

We strongly oppose the Syrian governmentÂ’s treatment of its citizens and we continue to oppose its continued destabilizing behavior more generally, including support for terrorism and terrorist groups. The United States will continue to stand up for democracy and the universal rights that all human beings deserve, in Syria and around the world.

Well, that should take care of things. I'm sure the UN will be springing into action any second now. What? This isn't Israel's doing? Well, forget going to the UN (for whatever that's worth) then.

Keep in mind this is another bit of evidence that Obama's outreach efforts to brutal regimes around the world has been, wait for it, a miserable failure. It was just a little more than a year ago that Obama sent a US Ambassador to Damascus after a 5 year absence. You can see how impressed Baby Assad was by the gesture.

Don't forget it was just a few weeks ago that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made it quite clear there would be no concrete action forthcoming from the US over Assad's crackdown on protesters. Sounds like someone got the message loud and clear.

Silence on Iran, vacillation on Egypt, absolute confusion over Libya and now an off-camera statement on Syria. It's like this guy is in way over his head or something.

6 I'm not sure how I feel about the anti-Syrian protesters, but it would be better for American security interests if Assad was overthrown and a more pro-Western government was in Syria - it would also releave pressure off of Lebanon and Israel.

Action against Syria for humanitarian reasons would have been more justified than our current "kinetic" action against Libya.

39 Its clearly Israel's fault for not providing sufficient external provocation to get everyone united around the external enemy.

All Israel would have to do to put an end to this is lob a few artillery shells over the Golan border and everyone would rally around Assad and the protests would melt away.

I had to take him with me for easter vigil rehersal and they had him be the pretend deacon. He's getting catechized properly but the environmental horseshit does occassionally crop up--I slap it down pretty hard though. Parental involvement and all that.

I asked the principal when we were going to have "Big Oil" day and explain to the kids how it kept the lights actually on. I love that raised eyebrow expression. 106 The United States, and by that I mean me, the Teleprompter 1000, condemns, and by that  I mean casually notice, in the strongest possible terms, and by that I mean grandeloquent words, the use of force by the Syrian government against demonstrators. This outrageous, and by that I mean expected, use of violence to quell protests must come to an end now, and by that I mean whenever you get around to it because we're not going to do jack squat about it. We regret the loss of life and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims, and with the Syrian people in this challenging time, and by that I mean I am totally indifferent except as far as as it makes me look bad.

115 definition of a war "hero"----

--- black and white american soldiers putting aside racial tensions to drive back german attacks on the marne during ww1 (altho the racism wasnt as bad as hollywood persists on telling us, the US army during that conflict was astounding)

---the first wartime pilots' bravery was also amazing.

---vietnam tunnel rats (holy shit)

---the marines on tarawa (saw footage of that battle on PBS, "harrowing" would be the word to use. the south pacific theater was every bit as deadly as the eastern front.)

and thats only a few.

....jus sayin..

117 Anyone else wonder if maybe Brack wants to see just how far he can spread the US military before shit stops working?

Maybe he is hoping for a "million Mogadishus" so that he has an excuse to really cut down on our presence overseas.

"Support the troops by bringing them home" and all that hippie horseshit.

Maybe he wants the war machine to break so he can throw it away and spend the money on Social Justice.

A few hundred GI's getting cut-off and wiped out in one of these little muz open air shit-holes because of airlift shortages or lack of air cover would tickle that walking peter-track pink.

o/t...I've been crying all day.

I would like some prayers for a beautiful young lady in my RCIA class. She very excitedly told me when they were "trying" for a baby, then when she found out she was pregnant. Her husband is military. She needed her marriage validated and they wanted to put her through the whole program--I pushed the pastor to speed it along so she could come into the church at easter, and he did. She's been having trouble and is currently in the hospital with placenta previa. The bishop has given leave for the pastor to go ahead and administer her all her catholic sacraments. I'm sure she will be fine but she wanted that baby sooooo badly. I hope to God he makes it.

If'n I was a Republican Governor, in a Western State, I would start emminent Domain proceedings aginst the US Government for any unused Federal Land... and then Drill Drill Drill...

They need to take the Permit process out of the hands of the Feds.

Under this: To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;

It reads that State Legislatures must give Permission for the Feds to have Authority over Land within a State.... therefore the STATES can take that authority away if it is not used for Purposes stated in the Constitution...

Add in Kelo... and they should be able to seize Fed Land if unused.

This seems like one way to force public consideration of some of these issues.  Write one clear focused simple bill in the house (authorizing drilling in ANWR), pass it, and send it to the Senate.  True, the libs there might kill it, but they could not do so without some discussion in the public square.
Rinse lather repeat.
The list of such constructive dismantlings is quite large.

130 For Earth Day, I turned on all the lights, did the laundry and the dishes, baked some eggs, went for a drive and burned a little rubber, and  think I'm gonna open the windows and run the AC a while.

Actually, I didn't do anything unusual because basically it's a holiday celebrating a bunch of people who stood up and predicted the future, and they got every single thing wrong.

Happy Earth Day, Paul Ehrlich, Ken Watt, Denis Hayes, Peter Gunter, and all the other maroons who stood up and shouted "Chicken Little Was An Optimist!"

We look back on you with the benefit of time an experience... well, those of use who aren't gullible, panicky hippies, anyway.

Mine's heart wasn't beating either. The lab tech said, "he didn't make it" My husband said looked at me panicked, and said "what?" I said to him, "he's dead honey, he didn't make it." He then crumpled straight to the floor. I got him revived, found someone to pick up the boys at school, and by the time I got home I was numb. I still think about him everyday.

How anyone could do that on purpose is beyond me.
