Friday Night Music Thread
— Ace

I don't know what this thread is about, but some people wanted a music thread.

I don't really listen to music. I'm not into "pleasure."

What I'm mostly into is spite. Spite, and envy, and hate.

I'd like to see that.

Several months ago I was sitting around, diddling on the ONT, and flipped the channel to find that Daryl Hall had hosted a whole series of concerts at his home. I watched every single episode and loved it. I'll try to find a clip of that as well.

They were going in a totally different, harder direction but then tossed it all away to do the reunion tour in face paint and costumes. The two non-original members weren't told that the reunion would happen, so they were completely caught by surprise. They put two years of their life into Carnival of Souls, and then they were fired and the album was released without any publicity whatsoever.

179 Ace: my understanding is that it was just the first verse that Bowie wrote for Ziggy Stardust. It apparently made sense in the context of ZS; the reason the young dudes carried the news was that the radio stations were going out as civilization collapsed, so they sang their songs in person. There's also a double meaning when he talks about having T-Rex: T-Rex was a glam rock group that influenced Mott the Hoople, and it also was a species that had gone extinct, as mankind soon would. The song can be taken numerous ways; it also is either (a) a song about disaffected youth who have replaced the hippie bullshit of the Sixties with a sort of fuck-you cynicism; or (b) as I didn't know till long after I became a fan of the song, an anthem for gays cruising for young dudes. Yeah, I'm a naive fuck. But it's still a great song.

247 This song hits the DRINK BEER button in my head like a sledgehammer. To me, pretty much all good rock does. That's ironic because most people associate rock with hallucinogens, but that's really only a very small group of songs--the phrase "acid rock" actually only referred to a very specific kind of style, one which had largely disappeared by the early to mid-70s. Generally, though, rock as a whole is more associated, to me, with drinking and having a good time. Of course, there are some songs which will always be associated with certain, er, rainy day drugs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIM03siHuaM And yeah, the title of the youtube video is incomplete.

If you dont use tinyURL links get rejected? Or did I do something wrong?

you have to use tiny url.

go to youtube, copy and paste it into tinyul.   copy and paste the tiny url.

Go to the comment box on the HQ. Type the name of the song, highlight what  you just typed then scroll up to that top of the comment box. click the thing that looks like a chain or infinity symbol.  Paste the tinyurl link in the top right box and click ok.

that should cover it.

Posted by: Ben at May 27, 2011 09:06 PM (DKV43)

If you actually use the hyperlink tool and know the tricks you do not need to use tinyurl to post youtube links.  As long as it doesn't have the extra goofy &related garbage in the link it will be short enough to post without issue.  I think your post will be rejected if you just try to past the link directly in the text box without it being tagged to a word or sentence.

319 Can you help me identify a video?

All I remember is that it ends with a woman fleeing down a hallway, when all of a sudden she's blocked by a demon who darts back and forth from right to left, blocking her way.

The last image of the video is the demon holding this woman over his head while his tongue, which is like three feet long, drags across her body.

Now I remember seeing this one time probably at least thirty years ago.  This was waaaaaaaaaaay back in the beginning of the video era.  It was cheap, it was shot on video with smoke machines and strobe lights, and it was heavy metal.  The tongue special effect was cheap but disturbing to my kid eyes.

I would really like to see this again, but I have no idea who the band was or the name of the song.  Help me, morons!

Basically.  Descended from Zoroastrianism, where Ahura-Mazda = the good god and Ashura = the bad god.

I wonder sometimes if Christianity is technically monotheistic.  Setting aside the Trinity which is its whole own weird thing, you still have the Devil.  I know, I know, he's a fallen angel, but he still seems to function like Opposite God, which is more, um, bi-theistic.  NTTATWT.

With the big lip
And the over -
Bite - bite

You gotta bite
Bite - bite - bite - dabita

393 I've been getting into Gram Parsons pretty heavily lately, and, therefore, I'm finding myself seeking out more and more traditional country artists like Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Bobby Bare, George Jones and Ray Price.  Whenever I hear someone say they don't country music, I think they really haven't heard real country music.  Forget 99% of the crap that comes out of Nashville today.  Go watch Buck Owens rip into "Tiger by the Tail", or listen to the groove on "Heartaches by the Number", or the beautiful intertwining of voices of the Louvin Brothers on "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", and then talk to me about country music.

532 EoJ...was there a more "opportunistic" band in 80's metal than Krokus?  They began playing progressive rock, before becoming AC/DC wannabes after Back in Black hit big, (they did do a version of "American Woman" which blew both the original and the Lenny Kravitz version out of the water), and then went to Judas Priest mode on Headhunter.  Not exactly originators in the genre.

I can't listen to The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division or any of those bands without flashing back to the rank-ass Euro-chicks I knew in Germany. A few were cool (read: hot enough to tolerate), the rest were a bunch of mopey skanks who'd have been happier if they just OD'd and got it over with.

Yeah, I was kind of an alt-fag in the late 90s.  Mighty Lemon Drops, Front 242, Flesh For Lulu, etc.

But you're right, the chicks wore more layers of shapeless clothes than a hobo wintering in fucking Greenland, and were more interested in shitty poetry, the published diaries of girls who committed suicide and applying layer after layer of eyeliner with trim rollers.

I got fed up with trying to tip these pre-emo broads over onto their backs and started listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

If you wanted to see something, you had to watch those and just hope that the video you wanted to see might make the rotation.

I can't believe that all we have to do nowadays is hit Google, and the vast majority of videos you might ever want to see are right there whenever you want them.

I dedicate this song to Empire of Jeff's Magic Brainword Machine.

http://tinyurl.com/42ljd8j

There is so much WIN in that song:

Vulcanize the whoopee stick
In the ham wallet

Cattle prod the oyster ditch
With the lap rocket

Batter dip the cranny ax
In the gut locker
  Marinate the nether rod
In the squish mitten
  Power drill the yippee bog
With the dude piston

Pressure wash the quiver bone
In the bitch wrinkle

741 Posted by: todler at May 27, 2011 11:10 PM (OluE0) I just read that Meat Beat Manifesto sampled Revolting Cock's TV Mind for their song "Helter Skelter". So, I took a look at RevCo's live version from '88 & it's apparently just Luc Van Acker saying it. Man, I was hoping it was Spock!

745 Throbbing Gristle's best track: "IBM."  It sounds utterly unhuman.

Tangerine Dream's "Rubycon" sounds utterly unhuman.

Iannis Xenakis's electronic works, including "The Legend of Eer" which sounds utterly unhuman.

Steve Roach's "Magnificent Void" which sounds awesomely unhuman.

Yeah I am kind of on a theme here.  It's been that kind of a week.  Being dumped hurts more than I remember.
