Gadaffi On Libyan TV: I'm Not Going Anywhere

It's about 40 minutes an hour (and counting) in and he seems to just be warming up. (It's over, he clocked in a bit more than an hour of crazy).

He's like an evil Bluto...he's rolling.

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi vows to fight on and die a "martyr," calling on his supporters to take back the streets from protesters demanding his ouster, shouting and pounding his fist in a furious speech Tuesday on state TV.

Gadhafi, swathed in brown robes and turban, spoke from a podium set up in the entrance of a bombed out building that appeared to be his Tripoli residence hit by U.S. airstrikes in the 1980s and left unrepaired as a monument of defiance. The speech, which appeared to have been taped earlier, was aired on a screen to hundreds of supporters massed in Tripoli's central Green Square.

Shouting in the rambling speech, he declared himself "a warrior" and proclaimed, "Libya wants glory, Libya wants to be at the pinnacle, at the pinnacle of the world."

What does President Present have to say about the turmoil that is rocking the world oil markets? Nothing.

There are reports that Libyan naval vessel has defected to Malta.

Added: CNNI says they think Gadaffi is speaking from the compound we bombed (no thanks to the French) in the '80s. One thought: Prompt Global Strike...When you have to kill someone within an hour, accept no substitutes.

Forget air strikes and land forces.  Just send in a pissed off honey badger and tell it Qadaffi is made of food.  Honey badger will take him out.  Honey badger don't give a shit, because he's a hungry little bastard.

But even with Qadaffi gone, Libya would be a complete wreck.  Whatever government gets installed after his ouster (provided it happens) isn't going to be much better than the one they've got now.

Once the moderate muslims (assuming that they actually exist) are beheaded by the True Followers, it will be jihad central.

Gadaffi will probably go under, but i imagine its going to be a long bloody fight. If the protesters took Benghazi, as reports say, then that means they took all the weaponry there. So they're fairly well armed.

If the airforce stops bombing civillians, there will be nothing between Gadaffi and the mob.

The current middle east turmoil, regardless of outcome is good for the west and the US specifically.

Obviously, it democracies emerge, the benefits are clear for the west. However, if islamist governments emerge, there is too much cultural and religious strife in the region among the players for a cohesive and united muslim  world to coalesce. Turks won't stand for Arab supremacy; Arabs won't stand for Persian supremacy and Persians won't stand for either Turk or Arab supremacy. Then fold into the mix the Shia and Sunni rivalry and long standing tribal rivalries and you have layers of conflict in the region that are likely to never be sorted out.

The negative outcomes of instability that I see are an interruption of the oil supply to the west and serious danger for Israel. I think the oil supply thing can be dealt with easily by implementing an "all of the above" energy policy. There will be a short term spike in energy costs but once North American sources are accessed along with nuclear power, etc, prices will come down. Prices would drop if the US just announced it was considering an "all of the above energy" policy (recall what happened when GWB allowed the off shore exploration ban to lapse before Obama took place).

Israel is a bigger issue in the long term. We would necessarily have to unequivocally support any action Israel feels is necessary for its security. However, I do see that as do-able policy shift when an adult administration is in power.

OK, rip me a new one...what have I missed?

Considering Bush's history of massacres and oppression of our enemies peace loving societies in the Middle East, I don't want to intrude on the internal affairs of countries who are only trying to keep dangerous tea bagger types under control.

Besides, 8 dollar a gallon oil is good for the economy, it gets the rabble out of their gaia raping SUV's and into clean, wonderful, and fuel efficient buses and trains operated by hard working transit union members who are your friends and neighbors

99 92 Yes, and no to your comments.  The problem is: one, who we have in office; two, the Muslims are factionalized, but they can manage to just barely hold it together in order to strike at us (the West and Israel).  That's the way it's always been, but heretofore they never had an impetus to cohesively organize. The despots were more driven by power and personal wealth, in spite of the rhetoric, so there was a way in so to speak -- the Islamists, for now at least, are not the same sorta beast (besides, they have ways of gaining power and wealth to themselves that are supportive of jihad).  That's the danger -- they won't fall in on each other enough and/or soon enough to be of any benefit to the rest of us.

104 I personally think that this revolt in Libya could be the one that can work in the favor of U.S. interests. The world will be better of with Gadaffi gone. That is unless some corrupt Islamist group takes over.
