— Ace I like this post. I get his "manic-depressive" schizophrenia in prognosticating 2012 -- I spend four days thinking "we can't win" and then three days thinking "we almost can't lose."
Good sum-up of Obama's problems.
He’s lost his touch: For an allegedly great communicator, most of Obama’s efforts to move public opinion since taking office have fallen flat. He never moved the numbers on health care. He’s no good as a surrogate for Democrats, as Jon Corzine, Creigh Deeds, Martha Coakley, and scores of Democrats learned in the midterms. He and his team can’t resist overpromising; his team put out a laughable chart about how the stimulus would keep unemployment low, and by September 2010, “Recovery Summer” was a punchline.Jimmy Fallon had one of the first jokes that really hit Obama, just before Christmas 2009: “Michelle Obama’s not that excited about Christmas this year. It seems every year the president makes her this great big promise about how great a present he’ll get her, and then he never delivers.” The joke killed. People began to draw a conclusion about Obama: He always promises the moon and gives you much, much less.
Speaking of that: Obama got testy with an aggressive reporter for, as Drudge calls it, the "first time." That is, the first time a reporter's treated Obama like a citizen in a democracy rather than a Sun King fated to sit upon the Celestial Throne.
Sample testiness:
"That's wrong," the president stated. "That had nothing to do with it; the White House had nothing to do with it."When Watson persisted, Obama said, "I just said that was wrong," and, later, "I just said that wasn't true."
I think he's talking about the politically-motivated decision to send one of the retired Space Shuttles to NYC instead of the more-deserving Houston, but it sort of doesn't matter -- it could be about anything. His petulance and lack of adult-level conflict-navigation skills are on display.
Obama does not do well when challenged, whether by people or circumstances. One can hardly blame him; he's hardly had to face any challenges in his life and so he's never developed the coping skills most people pick up by their early teens. Although previously praised for having a "first class temperament" and preternatural cool, he doesn't -- almost everyone can appear charming and even masterful in easy situations.
I never lose my cool when buying coffee at Dunkin Donuts, for example. I don't get angry or seem desperate. Because... it's not a difficult situation to face.
And pretty much that's been Obama's life. The toughest thing he's faced is dealing gracefully with being overpraised. His skill in dealing with challenge is mostly restricted to charmingly deflecting compliments and flattery.
2008 won't be like 2012 in that respect. The national media is all-in with Obama, and will do what it can to shield him, coddle him, as he's used to; but not everyone out there will be on Team Obama, and some reporters (like this local guy in Texas) might actually decide to do their jobs and, as they say, "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."
And Obama won't handle that well. He never has responded well to criticism.
And even the monolithic liberal national media can't completely pretend the last four years haven't happened. Obama is now no longer just an abstraction or an "empty screen upon which to project one's hopes;" he actually has a record. And he can barely explain away that record, let alone run on it in a positive way.
Not Really Related: Drudge's funny juxtaposition in headlines.

So my prediction is that it's still the economy, stupid, and things will be so rotten in two years, Obama won't stand a chance. Unless there's something crazy, like a Ross Perot fucking up the election.

This. Probably the worst example was during the financial meltdown in Oct 2008- the media kept praising him for remaining so calm during the crisis, which was absurd because for him it wasn't a crisis, it was clearly a political gift, which virtually guaranteed his election.

That's why our candidate's debating skills must be top-notch. I think the Presidential Debates will be crucial, and he'll probably only agree to the historical minimum to boot. That's where the naked emperor can be exposed, and those that see him exposed will then see the MBM try to spin for him again after the fact.

At least you can say that McCain had to remain cool for 2 splashdowns and the Forrestal fire incident, which is proof of actual mettle - because if he hadn't had it, he never would have been on the stage with Obumbles.

Sen Scott Brown was on with the local sports yakkers, this morning. They asked why he voted against defunding Planned Nonparenthood.
Scott said if we researched the issue we'd learn that 80% of the funds go towards disease screening and nifty shit like that and it would be irresponsible to defund that care.
Now, tell me, if you were the interviewer, what would be the next thing you'd say?
a) Ahhh, okay, Senator, great to talk with you.
b) Then why, Senator, didn't you propose to cut 20% of their funding?

Obama won on non-meaningful rhetoric. Stupid voters "wished" him into office attributing all kinds of stuff to him based on nothing. He now has a record, even as the press still tries to hide it.
Personally I am not scared of him getting reelected. The only way Republicans lose is they nominate another POS RINO candidate who causes the base to stay at home.

he's hardly had to face any challenges in his life and so he's never developed the coping skills most people pick up by their early teens
Careful with the overgeneralization, there. This sad little boy had to deal with desertion by his father, desertion by his second "father," and finally, desertion by his mother. He's developed extraordinary (read: wrongheaded) coping skills, most notoriously the narcissistic personality disorder that leads him to seek approval of his façade from ever-larger and more fawning crowds of strangers.
He hasn't faced professional challenges, yes. That's why his (few) defeats are so devastating. They injure the false front he works so hard to maintain.
If and when he loses in 2012 he will be a broken man, because that will be the first time he's actually lost something he sought. He won't be able to patch a hole that big.
Posted by: Michael Rittenhouse at April 19, 2011 08:10 AM (tc+tG)
You mean waiting for someone else to come in and do the work to overcome the challenge, and then take credit for the accomplishment is not a coping skill?

Completely? No. What they can do is cover some of the negatives, in a controlled, spun fashion in coordination with each other and the Dear Leader's Administration/campaign (as if there's a difference). Brad Watson made the most of the short time that he had, although the question about the shuttle was not on my top-ten list of questions for the arrogant Master of the Universe. He cannot stand it when someone questions his statements. I laughed out loud when he said he "loves Texas." Yeah, like a tick loves a hot match.

Trump is a bombastic sob, but he needs money to do this, and will not be able to do this on his own hook. That Rasmussen poll may or may not have been read by Trump, but was read by Republicans and the bid donors. The poll suggests that Trump can hurt obama, but currently cannot get close to Obama.

And there is another critical point. In 2008 most Obama voters falsely believed that the Republicans controlled the corrupt failed congress and voted for Obama in part to throw the bums out.
In 2012, Obama can't run as the outside reformer. He's going to have to deal with a real track record - and not a good one.
I expect the State Media will try to blame all the world's problems on Boehner and co, but its not going to work. The low information voters they are trying to influence only pay attention to who the president is.

In 1992 the Soviet Union had collapsed and the biggest challenge the public could see was a slow recovery from a mild recession.
In 2012 we will likely have a multitude of crises that the public is generally aware of - unemployment, debt, deficit, oil prices, inflation, etc.
I think that as long as we get a candidate willing to fight Obama he will face really long odds. Against another McCain though, Obama might still be able to cover himself.
Oh, and ironically the single best thing Obama could do between now and the election is sign on to a real entitlement reform package. It would take the issue off the table for him, like Clinton with welfare reform, and let him claim to really be focused on the economy...

In 2008, Democrats controlled both houses of Congress by large majorities, a fact which was grandstanded daily by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Despite their majorities they claimed to be blocked by Republicans at every turn.
In 2012, Republicans control the House and are a slim minority in the Senate. A fact emphasized at every available opportunity by Obama and every other Democrat with statements like "Republicans are stopping us from giving you goodies. fixing the economy, and bringing about world piece".

Meh. I wouldn't call Bush 41 a RINO. He was fiscal-squish neo-con, if anything. He was pretty solid on social issues, and he was a decent-to-good war-time president (in as much as he said, "Here's the mission. I'm trusting you to handle it form here"). His problems were largely in the fiscal areas- he believed it was ever okay to raise taxes.
To call his comity a sign of being a RINO would require that you call every Republican in congress- including Jim DeMint, Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, and Michele Bachman a RINO. Near suicidal comity is the curse of the Republicans.

One crucial difference. They pinned things on Bush first, Republicans second. Right now, Ryan and Boehner have lower name reconition than Obama. Your point underscores this. They were able to downplay Pelosi and Reid. Obama is the focus, whether they want hm to be or not.
Granted, we can expect to see analysis of Congress that we never saw in 2008, but that also invites comparisons against recent Dem led Congresses, if our Repub leaders are smart enough to do so.
My personal favorite will be comparing the Ryan 2012 budget with the Dems budget fro last year, especially since the latter doesn't exist.

On a related note, doesn't the guy come off like a stand-up comic is some of these stump speeches? Especially when he thinks the cameras aren't rolling? Not exactly "presidential". I don't understand why his approval rating isn't much lower.
On another related note, I just heard Karl Rove say that 45% of the public has already decided to vote against him, whereas only 28% are definitely "for". So you just need about a quarter of the remaining 27%.

Obama also said he's actually going to campaign in Texas. Now, I know the boy-king lies, but if he does, I say "more, please." It's not like it'll change the outcome of the State, and every penny he spends here is one he can't spend in Ohio, or MI, or VA, or any of the other swing states.

Don't know about Toomey's popularity at the moment, other than to say that there are no current indications that he is unpopular. Of course, Toomey won in an off-year, so Philadelphia was less of a factor than it will be. If the economy as felt by the middle class doesn't significantly improve by 2012, the "collar counties" could be won with a margin, possibly a decent margin.

Hmmm.... well... interesting how views differ...
There was a HUGE political component to our stopping. Swartz did NOT want to stop, and wanted to complete the Destruction of the Republican Guard...
And those of us there? Total suprise when we were told to stop. All the operational planning I saw, and the orders we had, were to continue... confused the heck out of us when we were told to stop.
And sorry, but Yes we did owe somthing to the Kurds... we had people there helping them rebel, we ASKED them to do so, with the expectation of American help... then (just like South Viet Nam) for internal political reasons did not keep our word.

I don't accept these dichotomous choices that assume one can simply divorce domestic and foreign policy. If the fire starts on the inside or outside of the house, it can still kill you.
Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at April 19, 2011 12:51 PM (B+qrE)
That's true - but looking at the front runners I see people who will have trouble getting elected - Palin, Bachmann, and people who simply will not deal with any fires - Romney, Daniels, Huckabee, etc.
Rand Paul sounds electable to me, and I think he'd be solid on dealing with the internal fires. And it we can persuade him that you can put out an external fire with the traditional quick and dirty methods (which are also cheap in American lives and treasure) he might be good enough on foreign policy...

I can't seem to find any polls involving Ohio but the way the media is screaming bloody murder about Kasich and that there is virtually no news at all on Obama's approval rating here, I'm assuming Ohio is still safely a Red state.
Posted by: ErikW at April 19, 2011 12:55 PM (W30Dg)
I'm pretty sure that the MFM not running any polls means they don't like the results. The ever dwindling Plain Dealer really hates Kasich but I doubt that they've achieved much traction on that. In fact after the Wisconsin results (where they sent Twitch Strickland to help out; LOL @ another Twitch failure) they've gotta be downright morose.
I saw on the news last night that Lorain is pissed off that they never got any federal relief for the flooding they had. Since that's Sherrod Brown territory that just means that he can't do a fucking thing for his core constituents and has to have him shitting bricks for next year if the state party can find somebody decent to oppose him (not a sure thing and they ought to clean house if they don't).

Amen brother. No member of our really smart ruling class has realized that fighting wars to win is cheap, while fighting wars to stalemate is hugely expensive. Seems like Rand would be open to the cheap and victorious strategy.

I would not be so sure that Ohio will go Republican in 2012. It will be a near run thing. The SB5 bill is up for referendum in November 2011, and that will be a good indicator of how the state is trending. The Public Unions, commercial unions and the media will go all in to defeat it, but there is quite a bit of resentment about the whole pay/benefits and collective bargaining agreements. So if SB5 is sustained, then it would look more positive for Ohio to go "R" in 2012.

Bush 41 raised taxes. Well, so did the Democrats in congress. Yet they didn't pay a price and he did.
Posted by: 18-1
The Democrats paid a price for it in 1994. Clinton raised taxes AGAIN in 1993, and plenty of people were pletny sore about the whole thing, and saw the Democrats for what they were. Briefly, before going into a stupor again.

I screamed at the TV last night in BamsterÂ’s interview with Brad Watson when he said this:
“Gov. Perry helped balance his budget with about $6 billion worth of federal help — which he happily took — and then started blaming the members of Congress who had offered that help,” Obama said.
Gee, Obama, how much money does the federal government collect in taxes from TexasÂ’ citizens? How much of that money do they get back? And why should StatesÂ’ citizens have to go hat in hand to beg for THEIR MONEY back from you Federal leeches in the first place?
I gotta say, I LOVED watching Brad Watson making Barry squirmÂ….

I wish I'd watched it now... They're going to show the whole thing on Sunday sometime between 9 & 9:30. I may DVR that part...
The part that Obama seems to be forgetting is that Gov. Perry resisted efforts to take the money. IIRC, the legislature over-road his veto (or threatened to, so he backed down, one of the two).
He and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst were both talking (rather prophetically, it turns out) about the major downsides of using the stimulus money as a band-aid for our budgetary shortfall in '10 & '11.

I think OH, right now, is more reliably red than CO.
CO worries me. But I think we can turn NH red in 2012.
Colorado is not an ideologically blue state. We lost the governorship and senate races because of fundamentally flawed candidates, and because Michael Bennett's senate race received millions of dollars of outside money because the democrats drew their last line of defense around him. Colorado tends to vote for the person rather than the ideology. That's why you see strange flips in congressional districts. Overall, Colorado is moving toward conservatism again. But if the Colorado Repubs manage to be as inept in the next election as in the last (I know. I know.), it's possible that Obama wins here. But my finger-in-the-wind analysis says that Colorado is in the R- column for the presidential race. Obama is just not well liked here.

Jesus Christ you are such a moron. Nobody here - NOBODY - like Huckabee or Romney. Both are unelectable. Pawlenty, Daniels, both would win easily. Palin and Bachmann would lose what's looking to be one of the more winnable races in recent memory. And we would all be doomed in that eventuality. That is all.

You thinking of a different state? NH voted Bush in 2000, Kerry in 2004 by a percent, has a 100% GOP Congressional delegation and a 1 of 2 GOP Senators (who won by nearly TWENTY POINTS in 2010), an overwhelming GOP state legislature, and Obama's currently sporting approval ratings in the mid-to-high 30s (not an exaggeration). You must be thinking of another state.

The data set is highly suspect because Perot's peculiar appeal to the flinty libertarian side of the NH electorate fucked it up in 1992 in a major way (look at his margins in the state). In 1996 Dole was a loser campaigner. The fact is, I don't really care about prior track records here -- remember what Ace said about the value of precedent? -- Obama cannot win the state if his approval rating is anywhere close to where it is (he is a 34% approval and 57% disapproval holy shit) unless the GOP nominates someone truly repulsive to the Granite State and gets a Sharron Angle Effect (where Reid was upside down in approval but still won because NV voters considered Angle simply unfit).
Seriously: Obama's FUCKED in New Hampshire right now.

A big factor in CO is that the dem machine has moved in and is actively working the smear machine behind the scenes. They basically threw the governor's race by digging up dirt on Scott MacInnis.
They have moved their smear machine over to western colorado- every R in our city council has undergone a similar attack and 2 have resigned due to "irregularities". While an anarchist, convicted armed robber ran for city council with nary so much as a mention about his background from the local paper which they now own. Douglas Bruce, of tax reduction fame, is currenetly under going this kind of attack- they want to make sure he doesn't dare put any tax reduction initiaves on the ballot this time.
They own the legislature- have proposed making a new district out of the western slope and BOULDER, effectively negating a strong conservative district, have given in-state tutition to illegals, and a host of other equally wonderful ideas. CO R's are just dead in the water. CO will go dem, is my prediction.
