Girl's Family: Messages Perfectly Innocent
— Ace

Weiner admits sending the messages, five in total he says, but says they are harmless and inoffensive.

On that point, the girl's family backs him up.

The family member said: “I am angry. This is surreal and unbelievable. It is absolutely crazy. We are just regular people who go to baseball games and basketball games, as ordinary and plain as can be.”

In the past few days, the girl and her family have become subjects of intense interest in the news media. On Friday afternoon, the local police arrived at their home and asked the girl and her mother to bring the girlÂ’s phone and computer to the police station so they could be checked to make sure no crime had occurred.

The family member said the family complied, and did not expect any further action to be taken.

Fair enough. Given the family would be angry at Weiner if there were some bad tweets here, I expect that's actually the truth of the matter.

I still would like to know what the hell Anthony Weiner was doing privately DMing a high school girl. His messages to her couldn't simply be publicly tweeted? "Thanks for your support! The future is made up of people like you!"

That sort of thing. Private? Why?

6 The only possible harmless DM he could have sent would have been along the lines of, "What the hell is the matter with you? You could get me into a shitload of trouble with your crazy-ass Tweets!  Where the hell are your parents?"

8 Well yeah but not so long ago this whole fiasco was a vast right ring conspiracy headed up by Andrew Breitbart.  Who knows what Andrew still has in his arsenal.

9 So this young lady tweets dirty online, starts mooning over Weiner, attracts Weiner's attention, gets into private messages... and then demurely chats about tea and dumplings.

I smell a lot of if from that. And by "if" I mean horseshit.

Posted by: Zimriel at June 10, 2011 07:30 PM (GeJs5)

10 That sort of thing. Private? Why?

Ego boost, I think.  He liked that the smitten teenagers were so taken with him. In the private chat, they can get all mushy and he can say, "now, now..."

I'm still suspicious, but if the cops find nothing, then there's nothing and probably they can figure out if anything untoward happened to her computer before they got it.

This is also not the behavior of a normal family.  But then again, Lewinsky's family was cool with it too. Methinks if we knew their names, an FEC search might show some political donations.

Posted by: AmishDude at June 10, 2011 07:30 PM (73tyQ)

11 Yep, ordinary as can be. Baseball, apple pie, and a daughter who tweets about loving married men, loving a perverted congressman (who is in direct contact) and using honey mustard sauce for unusual reasons. [Unless this is one of the others in Archie's gang]

12 When my son was a teen, he knew a lot more about computers and how to wipe files and hide data on net storage than the local cops. Did a forensic tech unit check the drives? Did they view her history with her ISP?

Posted by: RR at June 10, 2011 07:30 PM (6vcT4)

13 On Friday afternoon, the local police arrived at their home and asked the girl and her mother to bring the girlÂ’s phone and computer to the police station so they could be checked to make sure no crime had occurred.

There's no way they did a forensic analysis that quick either. Isn't it odd the police showed up right as Fox News was there and they started confiscating screencaps, etc? Does Weiner have friends in New Castle?

Posted by: Rocks at June 10, 2011 07:32 PM (th0op)

14 I have some questions: 1 - how long does Twitter save private messages? 2 - is it possible some were deleted and others were maintained? I think this won't be resolved until Twitter is hit with a search warrant.

So, basically, it is now fair game for an adult man to privately message teenage girls? Or teenage boys if they swing that way?

I mean really, talking about cape and tights and stuff. That's all really innocent. Honest.

So, I assume Twitter has already wiped the servers as well then? Considering Weiner sits on the government committee that deals with Twitter like entitites?

28 >>> 14 - how long does Twitter save private messages? They might be saved (or might be in their server back-ups somewhere anyway), direct message notifications also would be sent to their email accounts. There are a few places that could be checked if law enforcement were inclined.

29 >>>Ace, why are you giving this scumbag the benefit of the doubt? Why are you believing the NY Times? It's not believing the NYTimes. It's believing the parents. They seem to think that this is the end of the matter. Why do they think that? People aren't dumb. If the cops act casually, as if there's nothing here, they pick up on that. If the cops act like some crime has been committed, they pick up on that. So the family is in a good position to know what the cops think. Based on their belief, I'd say the cops think there's nothing here.

35 This is also not the behavior of a normal family.  But then again, Lewinsky's family was cool with it too.

That's not how I read it.  I think that's the NYT downplaying things.  As I read it, they're angry at Weiner for having private communications with their daughter, and they resent having a media spotlight shone on her.  Sure, she seems like she's looking for trouble, but I was a foul-mouthed little punk when I was 17, too.  I think her parents just aren't very internet savvy, and probably assumed that their daughter's interest in politics was the least of their concerns; if I had been interested in Congress as a high school kid, my parents would have been thrilled.

36 Well, I still maintain this is wildly inappropriate for an out of control harem-builder like Weiner. Certainly this is still a resignation-level offense. But, if there was no actual explicit texts between him and this girl, then the "murder" charge is out. It is still weird and creepy and expulsion-worthy, but not criminal.

This may have already been addressed, but here's the fish:

Initially, it was reported that a FoxNews reporter was in the house interviewing the girl, was made to give the authorities any and all screen captures, and leave immediately.  (please tell me if I am wrong here as I will be more than happy to retract)

I have a generally positive perception of the police, but recently after the AZ shooting of a vet, the cops protesting in WI....

I just have this nagging suspicion that this may have been a coerced action...especially if Fox News had a reporter already in the house.

I dunno...This whole story is full of so many twists and turns, it's hard to ponder one thing before another thing comes to light.

Depends, could be the girls saw all of the trouble Weiner has got himself into and deleted anything that was going farther than talking about the weather. Later she shows the innocent tweets to her mom and everything is cool.

The cops have her computer and cell phone. If they search the hardrive for deletions and find there in no there there then it's just weirdness and not a crime.

64 So the police showed up, in order to investigate further.  This is in Delaware, not NY.  Giving them the benefit of the doubt, what we have here is:

1.  investigating a complaint from a crank of some kind so it can be dismissed and made to go away

2.  a legit complaint, which would have required evidence, of which we have none that is solid, yet.

3.  the appearance of  "doing something", which can be very important when pressure is applied from any source, or

4. maybe there's fire with the smoke, but it's sure hard to prove.

Even if there was no actual sex talk, his "tights and cape shit" e-mail seems a little too "familiar" to be sending to an underage girl. A congressman talks like that to a 17 year old he doesn't actually know? Seriously?

89 Nothing screams innocence and chastity like using Dijonnaise for Lube.

I somewhat disagree.  She doesn't even know what she's talking about.  She sounds over-sexed and under-educated, like many 17 year-olds.  In reality, using mustard for lube would probably sting.  This is the trying-to-sound sexy blather of a young girl trying to sound like a sexy woman, and failing.

I can't believe I'm discussing honey mustard.  Good grief.

And yes, Weiner's intentions are clear, even though he probably didn't break any laws.  He's a predator.

105 I am reading your tweets and I don't know. I don't agree. Nearly every mother on my local TV says their murder suspect son didn't do it, not their angel, their baby. I am not equivocating these kids to murders, I am just saying parents have rose tinted glasses. Besides, when I was caught in almost anything as a kid I would deny deny and most of the time my parents would buy it. Some of these girls claimed to love Weiner and might swear up and down nothing happened to protect him and to protect themselves (in the assumption that they are in some kind of trouble, which they wouldn't be). Also, teenagers lie. The cops (unless they're just ticking some boxes) will probably get a sense from the kid if she is being evasive and will be able to tell if there is really nothing here. Based on his M.O., his cageyness on the issue in his press conference, and the statements attributed to kids who were in contact with him, I don't see why there is the assumption that there's nothing here until the police have a good look.

107 My point was that if there's anything to be found, it might be found in e-mail or on a HDD, but it there's real suspicion that something was going on, the next step is going to be getting a subpoena for the girl's Facebook and Twitter records.  The hard drive will never tell the whole story.

Related question:  Does Weiner have a Skype account?

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at June 10, 2011 11:55 PM (D+phB)

DE police was something, but I suspect is was an effort to show effort.  If the Weiner is to be nailed to the wall, it will involve twitter and facebook.  This one girl may have the golden "go to jail ticket" on her computer, but I doubt it.  /Not that I don't hope it's true.

Point is, when I got there the police officer made some snarky comment to me asking why I like to hang around high schools, suggesting I'm a pedophile.

You sure can delete anything...from your feed.  If there were shenanigans, playful suggestions, or other synonyms for hitting on underage girls, well - nothing is ever really deleted.  The google cache is proof enough of that, though in this case they may lend a hand and actually delete something.

124 The google cache is proof enough of that, though in this case they may lend a hand and actually delete something.

Google doesn't cache private DM messages.  When DM messages are sent, only two parties have the capacity to delete them, the recipient and sender.  Safe bet Weiner deleted everything on his end, and the girl probably did her part as well by deleting incriminating tweets on hers.  That means the evidence now only exists in backups on Twitter servers.

It's possible that a desktop app used for tweeting could have saved a cache of the tweets as well, but I'm not sure how much of that is recoverable.

That can all depend on your temporary internet files capacity settings.  Also if you have google remembering your searches.  Stuff you've downloaded.  And even places you've gone to but deleted may still be recoverable, I don't know.  Also knowing the computer you can get the IP information from the ISP in subpoenas probably and see where they were going.

138 I just don't know how it all works, if they could tell if she was deleting stuff after weinergate broke from her comp.

Finding histories of searches is pretty easy, all of that is saved by the browser and stored on your personal computer.  If they don't use a private browsing mode, a 10 year old could recover the data.

Tweets are more iffy because initially, it's all stored on Twitter servers, not the personal computer.  The data then can only possibly exist in caches utilized by third party Twitter apps.  In her case she was actually using a Blackberry for many of her tweets, so if the police had an ounce of sense they would have confiscated that as well.  There's a chance that a cache of tweets could have been stored by whatever apps she was using on her Blackberry for Twitter, and it's not something you can easily delete without a bit of technical savvy.

Have to say, when there is a national level scandal, the first thought, if not actual response, of most parents of a teenager is to shut it down as quickly as possible. That would give them at least some wiggle room and time to decide where to go from there.

No one knows the families political leanings and that could have some determining value.

The way this story has developed thus far, my instincts say that  Rep. Weiner's closet is very large, and has comfortable accommodations for many many skeletons.  Lay in a stock of butter and salt, cause this may get awesome.  If it doesn't, you still have butter and salt.

166 >>>>125 Google doesn't cache private DM messages. When DM messages are sent, only two parties have the capacity to delete them, the recipient and sender. Safe bet Weiner deleted everything on his end, and the girl probably did her part as well by deleting incriminating tweets on hers. That means the evidence now only exists in backups on Twitter servers. Advanced computer forensics can recover just about anything she has deleted, if the agency looking into it has the capabilities and deems it worth the time to analyze her devices beyond a cursory look. The only snag here would be if his damage control advice included using software that would erase her drive and write junk data over it several times. I doubt it.

One was about baseball. In another, he replied to a question she had about legislation by jokingly asking for her advice, the family member said. His third message to her was in response to a link she posted to a YouTube video of his giving a speech, with the message: “My true love.”

In a blog post on Tumblr, she later shared the contents of that private message from him. In it, Mr. Weiner appeared to liken himself to a superhero. I cam back large.  In charge. Cape and tights shit..."

That last line about his large in charge response is not to her link to a video.  I dont care what you say.

He'll just claim that when he said he didn't DM anyone underage he was talking about inappropriate DMs.  These were just all innocent.

If he's asked at least.  And whoever the reporter is will likely accept that explanation.  Because they want to believe he's innocent until he's proven not to be.  The opposite of a average person or a Republican who they will always assume is guilty.

I could see how honey mustard could be used as a lubricant.  The acidity could serve as a spermacide just like back in Casanova's day when the women used a half lime or lemon peel as a cervical cap and the acidity of those worked the same way.

The condiment that really conjures up bacchanalia is mayonnaise.  Mayonnaise was invented by the Romans thousands of years ago.  You start with raw eggs yolks, which are almost pure colesteral and a good lubricant, and then you add a little redwine vinegar for that acidity plus a pinch of dry mustard.   Then you slowy drip in extra virgin olive oil while beating it steadily with a balloon whip for about 20 minutes and finish it off with a dash of lemon juice.  I figure mayonnaise was invented by sheer accident.

Those Romans loved their orgies.

236 Sheriff Joe, where are you??!! I don't get it. I punch in all the letters and all I get is, "We're sorry, this number is disconnected or is no longer in service". And where are the pictures? These new-fangled Touch-Tone phones are beyond me.

237 #237 The dog that didn't bark here is that fat stinking cur lying by the door, who will ony bark when a truthseeker tries to enter - the Mongrel Scabreous Mutt.

239 So Weiner says he had six partners...and he couldn't have been talking about the teens, so there must be at least one more adult partner yet to emerge.

________

The sixth one is probably Huma. I mean, how do you think he attracted her to him in the first place? Clearly, he so impressed her with his cape and tights that she decided to marry him.

Or maybe he tried the old "I put on my wizard robe and hat" routine...

242 We are just regular people who go to baseball games and basketball games, as ordinary and plain as can be.

Other issues aside, am I the only one who thinks this is an odd statement?

Just seems like an odd choice, maybe they're huge fans.

Jumps out of context.

243 How the hell can her family consider them harmless when the girl was posting crap about 69ing and the use of mustard as lube? For her parents to claim that she is just a normal girl and everything was harmless, is bullshit.

244 Totally off-topic ( but not really, he was covering this, too... ) does anyone know what happened to Gateway Pundit? For 2 days all I get is a dark, denim screen when I try to go there.

247 And the MFM does nothing but spout Weiner's line of defense. I guess they are all worn out pouring over the Palin emails
