In the strikes, 112 Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired at more than 20 coastal targets to clear the way for air patrols to ground Libya's air force.While U.S. defense officials cautioned that it was too early to fully gauge the impact of the onslaught, the official said that given the precision targeting of the Navy's cruise missiles, they felt that Libya's air defenses suffered a good deal of damage.

Is this a suprise? I was under the impression that the wording of the resolution focused on protecting civillians.
It doesn't get more vague than that. I mean we could send Michelle Obama down there and to stop them from eating butter and I think that would be considered legitimate by this resolution.
When the resolution passed, I figured we would bomb their tanks, depots, air defenses, and military barracks. Then arm the rebels through egypt and hope they can overthrow Gawdawphee.
If not, don't be suprised if a cruise missle accidently lands on the crazy col.

I hate to say this- but I don't support the troops. How can I when there has not been articulated a clear mission? Of course I don't want to see casualties and won't slander our soldiers. But this has gone too far. We have had for some time, a completely out of control foreign policy and a State Department that seems in many ways to be acting in spite of our interests and in some cases clearly against them. Get ready to accomodate yourselves to the hordes of North African "freedom fighters" that we'll be expected to welcome with open arms- we'll be feeding them soon and training them to take over our jobs.

The whole depot felt like a ghost town. My son shopped in the MCX, which seemed nearly empty, and we had lunch in the Backyard Burgers. There were maybe five people in there in the middle of the afternoon.
I know the military is cutting back. What a strange time to be doing so when we're involved in another war. And if we don't end up with land troops in Libya, it'll be a miracle. Praise Obama, that fuck.

That is probably what will happen in the end if they really back up the rebels, but they won't. Qaddafi didn't leave because he knew he would win. Hell he already has. It's just a matter of waiting now. They could take out every scrap of heavy equipment Qaddafi has the army would still still win with small arms, it's clear the rebels are a joke. that's why they are already bombing his bunker hoping for a quick kill. I'd bet he's nowhere near Tripoli.

H: I certainly agree with you on the first part and the no casualties addendum, but I have no idea how "success" is being defined here.
I think we should also pray for all our leaders that they may see their way clear to actually stand up for this nation above all others as they execute their assigned duties, especially when they put our men and women in harms way.
It might be worth a prayer for the repubs to grow a pair and clearly articulate how worthless Obama is and how he is derelict in his duty as CinC. But I am not sure that a miracle of that order is in the realm of possibility.

What is it to "support the troops"? I think that's just mindless trope that's too often repeated by the Right. If by that it's meant to show respect to uniformed soldiers, donate to causes beneficial to them and refrain from slandering them, then yes, I support the troops.
But I will not be stifled in voicing oppostion to this out of control government. It would be nice if there was some type of oppostion party that would seek to place some restraint on this administration in this insane aggression, but obviously that's not the case.

If the scale of the atrocities, the continuing fire during the "ceasefire", etc all turn out to be exaggerations by a desperate group of rebels trying to get Western aid - how would that be any different then the way the German source tried to bait the West into taking out Saddam? 3. Selling this as a No Fly Zone - then opening with attacks on tanks and Tomahawk salvo - is going to make some people unhappy.
Personally, if I were President - I would have said "we have never forgotten Lockerbie" and stop talking. I also hope we used up some of the nuke capable Tomahawks - so we can upgrade the fleet without worrying about a treaty.

Yes, that's how it's done when you have an administration that's at least concerned with keeping up the appearance of complying with normal standards of conduct. The fact that Barry announced merely a NoFly Zone and proceeded directly to attack is what's astounding.
Clinton ruled out a ground invasion and kept his word- as the ground forces came in the form of "peacekeeping" force after a cessation was agreed upon by the Serbs ". Even though a lengthy all-out occupation was planned for, even that band of liars and criminals felt bound to keep up appearances. Yes, the aggression on Serbia was illegal, but at least Clinton laid out his plan before Congress and the American people and followed it. The fact that the Obama administration is proceeding in the manner they are -assuring the American people of one thing, while planning another- should raise major red flags.

What's outrageous about this is that nothing was run by the American people or our representatives in Congress. There is no justification for our actions. We are not bound by treaty to intervene on behalf of an ally. This is not in response to an act of war committed against us, not an imminent threat or even a remote threat to our security, and there is no humanitarian crisis such as genocide which would oblige us to intervene as signatories to the Genocide Act. This seems to be -hate to say it- unprecedented.

The timing of the visit left White House advisors a bit defensive; they insisted that Obama would remain on top of fast-moving events despite his absence from the communications and military command hubs in Washington.
"You can't allow what's happening in the world to consume the presidency," said Daniel Pfeiffer, Obama's communications director. "You have to be able to walk, chew gum and juggle at the same time."
Obama will spend two days in Brazil, one day in Chile and wrap up his visit in El Salvador on Wednesday. He is to deliver a major speech on Latin America in Santiago, Chile, on Monday. In sweep and scope, the speech is expected to be analogous to his address in Cairo in 2009, when he sought to recalibrate relationships with the Muslim world.

Alan West is new to Congress, and doesn't understand there are two sets of rules, one for the liberal socialists and one the repugnant republicans. West is my go to guy in Congress, and I trust he gets up to speed on the rules.

Is Ghadaffi still in Libya? Could he already have left for Caracas and the three-week Obama delay was to let him get away and to placate Farrakhan and Wright?
With the weird promises of this mission (no civilians attacked, no ground troops, short involvement) is this a way to discredit military?
Someone up above asked how this helps Soros, and I agree that is a good question.

I asked these very same questions a couple days ago. No of this makes much sense from BO's point of view. He has always been the photo-op guy, so why not now?
I thought it might have something to do with campaign money. Biden, Clinton, Rice all went overseas for very strange, not based on current events, places in the last few weeks. Hell, Rice missed several key votes, and Biden wasn't here and his main duty is to help pass a budget.

I suspect a lot of Qadaffi's military infrastructure will become expensive junk soon and the US Navy won't even break a sweat. I don't expect much from Obama, in fact very little because he is a Carter-class incompetent, but I hope we don't go to all this effort and leave that slime still in power. If this does not result in Qaddafi's removal then Obama will have another albatross to hang around his neck for 2012.
I question Obama's reasons for this but if it means Qaddafi gets to collect his virgin rewards soon, I'm all for it. In the Monster Hall of Fame, Qadaffi would be a main attraction.

So, props to the Europeans and, yes, even Obama for finally doing it.
But they're absolutely following the liberal quagmire script. "Limited" involvement which leads to greater and greater involvement, always with not-quite-enough force and rules of engagement which would make St. Francis call them pussies.
The best case right now is that Libya collapses into chaos, the Europeans pick some well-meaning doofus to run the place, and it basically reverts to being a colony of the EU. Note that the French aren't at all bad at this kind of thing. Their "former" colonies in Africa are some of the most stable and prosperous places on the continent.
