— Ace I'm not sure what's going on; Althouse isn't either, because Google's being unhelpful.
I figure this is probably a technical glitch -- if Google goes after a high-profile blog just because they don't like it, bye-bye all value of Blogger -- but maybe it's more than technical.

Love that cloud. If you depend on it for anything, remember it can always be removed from you and it's never truly secure. The only way to do that that I'm aware of (after working on, but not completing a CompSci degree) is to have your backup on your own hard drive and to have as little info "out there" as possible. Only a computer that's physically disconnected from the grid is secure, and also impossible.
Granted, you trade some privacy for convenience, but my information is mine, since I'm the object of all those companies' affection. Why can't I have an automatic copyright on any information that's collected on me for any reason by anyone?
In a perfect world, every request for any information about me would be require my direct permission. Opting out should be the default.

How did McCain lose me?
1. He did not understand economics, the most important issue.
2. He lost the ability to make the experience argument.
3. He never defined himself as a principled conservative.
4. Erratic and incoherent, he lacked sufficient mental capacity.

I see that mainly with guys who have only worked in IT, and especially for IT-only groups.

My recollection is that she's frequently admitted to not voting (although she did vote for Obama).
I agree with the other folks that think this is a result of going up against Big Academe. If you read the facebook page they've set up, it really looks like she drew flak for some of her commenters' remarks about those dean candidates. I bet she starts moderating her blog.
I find her blog of interest from an entertainment perspective. I enjoy some of the pop culturey things she covers - I guess it's my version of Real Housewives or People magazine or something. But she doesn't really strike me as that smart in terms of the law or public policy. Kind of a privileged lightweight.
I'm enjoying the whiffs of "how dare you talk to me like that, I'm a professor!" tone that some of her back and forth with the (completely obnoxious) tech guy (redundant, I know) is taking. Reminds me of the old days. Good times, good times!

Those are the sophist-type arguments they use to justify whatever type of crap they want to do. It's the same as the mumbo-jumbo they spout to tell you why a splatter on the wall is art, or why that rapper in the White House was really speaking about Biblical themes.

Geniuses never abuse people because they think they're entitled to, they abuse people because they're not paying attention.
I tell techs that acting entitled or like they're anything but in a service profession will get them noticed in a bad way. People are so used to that, however, that when you go in with a "customer service" attitude the customer falls in love with you.

I woke up on the morning of October 8, 2008 and "decided to concentrate my mind on the question which man won the debate.... It was Barack Obama...." That was the post where I abandoned my vow of "cruel neutrality" as an observer of the 2008 campaign, and said my vote for Obama was "almost inevitable."
After the election, when I analyzed my path of decisionmaking — in the post called "How McCain Lost Me" — I said: "So this was the crucial tipping point. Dear readers, it was right there, the morning after the Town Hall debate."
And now, 2 1/2 years after he voted for McCain, here's Meade, drawn back to that same debate. He IM's me the link to that clip about Pakistan. We talk at some length, and he tells me I made the right decision. So you wish you'd voted for him? Yes.

Except for the fact that she voted for George W. Bush in 2004 and Ron Johnson and Scott Walker in 2010. You know, except for that.
Seriously, I just don't understand the reflexive need to CAST ALL THE IMPURE SINNERS OUT!! that's getting more and more vocal around here. Of COURSE Ann Althouse isn't a conservative (her husband is, though). She's a classic swing voter, one who swung towards Bush in '04 and towards Obama in '08. Listen, dudes: that right there is exactly the sort of person we need to convince in 2012 in order to win. But no, let's just talk about what a silly bitch she is because she's not a female Jim DeMint.

Yes I'm sure she voted for Walker. Voted for Johnson as well. And she voted for Bush in 2004 (back when voting for The Most Evil President In History was practically like declaring membership in the Church of Satan for a member of the ultra-liberal law faculty of an ultra-liberal university). So your assumption about her not being able to "vote for a conservative" isn't just ridiculous, it's provably false.
You know what the funniest thing is? That list of reasons cited above, about how "McCain lost me?" We'd agree with all of those! The only difference is that we're all partisan Republicans and conservatives, so despite McCain's shittiness as a candidate, we voted for him anyway. She's a swing voter, so what did you expect? You can't honestly claim she was wrong about any of those four points. And yet, the attacks, the claims that "she's really not that smart" (she's a brilliant legal scholar for fuck's sake), the insults, the dismissals, etc.
I keep saying this: if you dismiss everyone who voted for Obama as unworthy of your time or attention, you are by definition dismissing a majority of the country. And that means we lose. Because the whole friggin' point is to welcome those in the middle who voted Obama but have buyer's remorse back into the fold. NOT to keep shitting down their throats and pissing on their shoes and screaming "YOU STUPID SLUT HOW COULD YOU BE SO FUCKING DUMB I HOPE YOU DIE!" That is...not constructive.

1. He did not understand economics, the most important issue.
2. He lost the ability to make the experience argument.
3. He never defined himself as a principled conservative.
4. Erratic and incoherent, he lacked sufficient mental capacity.

Again: haven't each one of these criticisms been echoed by several AoSHQ commenters? And I don't mean supposed RINOs, I mean the hardcore blood & guts conservatives? And yet this is offered as evidence that Althouse is a stupid fool? Doesn't it seem more like evidence of how McCain completely blew the election and lost swing voters?

She's more in the Kaus mode, as in she is a liberal (or center-left), but still finds reasons to criticize them constantly.
And, yeah, I do find that more forgivable and somebody like that easier to get along with than people who called themselves conservatives for years only to vote for Obama in '08 when it looked like he was the next big thing and we were in trouble for the foreseeable future.
Posted by: AD at May 13, 2011 05:34 PM (KkgaV)
While you do have a point, she is not your average voter. She is a law professor, who is supposed to understand things like the Constitution and how thr president gets to appoint judges.
Instead, she is voting based on how Obama presented himself, compared to McCain.
Well, I wouldn't insult her, but her reasons are really pathetic. I thought McCain did poorly in the debate, but I voted for him anyway, because I understood how important the election was. Apparently she did not.
An then to say that her husband, who did NOT vote for Obama, is now sorry he didn't because of the bin Laden thing...well, that is just pathetic.

Google is Progressive. By their moral code they aren't evil. It all depends on what you define evil as. By our American moral code almost everything they do is Evil. Which is why I avoid them whenever I can. Same goes for Wikipedia or Facebook.
Google has already proven they have a political agenda. They censor who goes into their news based on a site's political p.o.v. You can be as leftard as you want and stay in while hundreds of right leaning sites are in the memory hole. Their YouTube service allows jihad videos and bans anyone taking the contrary view. Ask the Jawas about their inability to keep a YouTube or Facebook account. Now we are shocked they are deleting Blogspot accounts for political reasons? I'm not.
There are consequences to almost all of the Internet being founded and ran out of the most crazy bastions of the left coast. We must shun them, find alternatives and give them our business.

Well, I'd expect a little more insight from someone who is getting paid obscene amounts of money to teach at a university even though she doesn't have a Ph.D.
Not just to teach, but to teach the law. If she were actually in a difficult field which would require her time, I'd understand.
But I knew what Obama was. I know what Obama is. She doesn't seem clued in. I would very much like to have her job because I can do it better than she can.

Yes, she often seems all too defensive about her decision to vote for Obama (over McCain)-- seizing any pretext to justify that decision-- but that's very different from defending or justifying *Obama himself* during his presidency, which she very rarely does. On the contrary, she's pretty consistently critical of O & his administration, mordantly acidly scathingly so. In that sense, she's nothing like Brooks/ Frum/ Parker et al.

Think of it this way: some of the things she says seem really misguided to a conservative. The Obama vote explanation has a lot of weakness to it.
But it's really difficult to find an earnest Obama supporter who just lays out their case without being a dick. It's not like we have to agree with them. It's just interesting to consider her points.
And when you do, a lot of it makes sense. Mccain failed to be what the GOP candidate needs to be, and there's a real question as to long term effect of such a presidency. I think Obama is still just too bad to be a reasonable alternative. The stakes are just too high. But it's worth considering other POVs.
It is a loss to you if you just write off blogs that don't abide by your personal preferences, IMO.

A lot of her posts have really ticked me off too. She does seem clueless sometimes, or at best extremely naive. But I do think a top rank school's JD is more impressive than a lot of PHDs out there, such as one in a soft liberal arts area.
Anyhow, I think some of her points about Obama actually were prescient. The idea that he would ruin that antiwar movement by failing to be the antiwar president they dreamed of, for example. I also think a Mccain presidency would have made it extremely difficult for the GOP to restrain spending (not that they seem to be doing much of it right now anyway).
She doesn't pretend to be very serious about politics. I don't think that's what her blog is for, or a fair way to praise it. It's free content, after all. And some of her coverage of news and issues has been really interesting.

Plus she's a spoiled, overpaid academic. Her insights are not particularly insightful. Her frame of reference is narcissistic, and overly self-satisfied. If she can't pony up the hosting fee, I can live without her opinions (and photographs of herself having cappuccinos), as well as the comments of such creepy posters as Titus, whom she indulges on a personal whim. And Google's dime.

"a..festival of misogyny and homophobia."
She'd fit right in here... seriously, she was a co-blogger at Insty while Glenn was vacationing and she didn't seem to dent it up too badly.
I don't care if she did vote for Duh!1- that's her right as a free American- she runs a good blog and allows a lot of varying comments. And she was treated very shabbily.
