Tea leaves: Sarah Palin is going to watch tonight's presentations and read the day-after analysis closely to see if Pawlenty or Cain make any headway.

As for Roemer, didn't someone point out that he once came in third in the Louisiana governor's race to Edwin Edwards and David Duke?  Ah yes, that was in 1991.

Wasn't "Inner Santorum" an old-time radio show?  And Pawlenty isn't a squish, he's a smooth and creamy cornmeal porridge from northern Italy.

I dislike Santorum almost as much as I dislike Gingrich. And Pawlenty's a big fat squish.

Describing Pawlenty as a "big fat squish" is a bit of an exaggeration.  He was squishy on cap and trade along with ANWR years ago, but over the last few years he's largely reversed course on that.

He's always been strong on social issues, and for a blue state has been pretty decent on fiscal matters too.  For years the Dems here in MN have been clamoring for tax and spending increases, and his veto pen has gotten quite the workout as a result.

I'm not sure if Pawlenty is the best choice and I'm certainly not in his corner yet, but he's certainly not the worst.

Agree with Jeff B.  Alot of it is style with regard to T Paw's so called squishness.  He'd be my guy if I had to choose out of this group.

I have to say though he did leave w/ medicore approval ratings and kind of set up a far left Dem Gov just as Reps took back seats and power in the state...

Cain will probably win though he will not get far in a primary. Palin wins when she is not there.

A delaying tactic for the "candidates" is the best option. Don't officially announce, just tour and speak for as long as possible. Limit the ability of the MBM to define the candidates and engage its smear machine. Have lots of "viable" candidates so that they need as many resources as possible to cover them.

The whole 'black guy as POTUS' thing is so over.   It's like if American Idol has a blonde country singer win one year it's gonna be a white hard rock dude or black R&B chick the next year.  The black president was fun in the first few movies that did it, and it was cool on "24" for several seasons, but it hasn't turned out so well in real life.

And it doesn't have much to do with Cain's views sadly, which seem OK, if not especially original or anything.  But the animus the whole "black president" thing sturs up in the 'black community' is, how to put this nicely, not beneficial to the "People of the No-Color Community". 

In case you haven't noticed the deplorable nationwide behaviour of black youths has dramatically worsened under Obama's time.  They feel entitled (more than normal, which is saying something) and act out  via endless gang fights, wildings, flash mob events, six on one beatings of whites, the everyday muggings on trains and busses -- and even their own all black events are falling into chaos (see Drudge's Rap Awards video linked today, or last weeks U.of A. food fight).

So, as much as no one wants to admit it the whole need to apologize for being white is now officially over.  The GOP is the white party and will nominate a white candidate in 2012.

See, for some people, Palin getting the nomination is inconceivable (Inconceivable!).  Therefore, by the laws of physics, someone else will get the nomination.  Therefore, someone else who is seeking the nomination must be a viable candidate.

This was the problem with the 'It takes a Carter to bring a Reagan' notion back in 2008-- there are no Reagans on the horizon.

Yeah, I was in that camp until I learned exactly how bad Obama would be.

I think most of us assumed that there would be at least one strong candidate by now.  So far, it doesn't look like it.

Back then I suggested that if Romney- who I found competely inauthentic and didn't trust- were to work on his image and better establish his conservative bona fides, I might be able to get behind him.  Instead, he's spent the last 3 years doing the same finger to the wind, focus group bullshit was was then.  Plus, Obamacare rendered him neutered on one of the most important issues up for debate.

It doesn't make me any happier that so many candidates are waiting to officially announce.

It makes me think like they have given up an advance and are just going to hope Obama loses the race. I can't help but feel that so many of them don't want to tarnish any future opportunities by losing an election that so many conservatives desperately want to win.

I think that unholy combination could be the next generation of bio-weapon.

They all suck ass, with the possible exception of Cain, and he's going nowhere on "doesn't have enough foreign experience."   (Like Toonces Indonesian residency and vacationing in Pock-ee-stahn has benefitted us, right?)

It's not looking like we're going to have a great field in 2012, that's not really disputable.

Foreign policy isn't going to be the driving factor in 2012, however.  Most presidents (Reagan, Carter, GW Bush, Obama) had little in the way of tangible experience in foreign policy, and few would argue that Obama has been a strong leader in that regard.

Cain would be a tough sell, given his lack of experience going up against an incumbent.  Charisma and general likeability can go a long ways though- there's always the "outsider" card to play.

I don't know that the public would buy it or not, but how many people would argue that a governor or senator is superior to managing a budget and understands economics better than a (former) successful CEO?

I'm not in anyone's camp yet, but I'm not ready to count Cain out this early.

There is the federalism card that he's been playing regarding Obamacare, but that's probably a bit too nuanced for most, even if a perfectly legitimate defense.  Unfortunately the GOP lost the "state's rights" battle a long time ago.

He ran against a much more experienced candidate in the primary, someone who had a slew of important endorsements, up to and including President Bush's.  There was a third candidate in the primary as well.

I would say that if he's showing a lack of political instincts, it's that he's decided to enter politics at levels of national office rather than local office.

Cons: Cain strikes me as a decent speaker at best. He is a bit of a rambler and storyteller, but that makes sense if you spend hours on the radio.

I will say that Newt has done some smart things and said some smart things, even non-obvious things like talking about how American daily behavior is simply not the same as what people expect in other countries - comparing, for example, how Germany and England view speed limits as opposed to America, where speed limits are seen as a "benchmark of opportunity."

That being said, "damaged goods" doesn't even begin to cover the number of holes he's dug for himself, and pursuing the nomination is almost pure political vanity. His biggest political news item of the last several years was sitting down with Nancy Pelosi and endorsing the throttling of human activity in the name of placating people who can't do math.

He's really just wasting everyone's time and money, he should be trying to, you know, do his job or something. Go on the daily news and get in fistfights with reporters about how badly they report economic and fiscal news.

This.  As I said, Newt Gingrich is a rotten human being.  Women are gonna LOVE hearing all about the way he treated his wives!  

And his problems extend far beyond just that.  He's a jerk to everyone, not just the women in his life.  He's that guy who always thinks he's the smartest person in the room, which is really difficult to tolerate when you actually ARE the smartest guy in the room but a whole lot worse you're really not...and Newt really isn't. 

Ask anyone who served in Congress with Gingrich what they think of his leadership style.

Jane D'oh, he wasn't bad at all.  It is evident that he doesn't have the experience at speaking in public that the others do but he didn't make any gaffs and he did make some pretty good pioints. 

To listen to Newt you'd think he was a teaparty type and he delivered his points well.  But I really think he was just saying what he thought the audience wanted to hear.

Romer was also effective but a little long.  Why do southern politicians always sound like they're leading a tent revival?

Pawlenty isn't a macho muscle man but I don't think he came across as a wimp.

Overall, it was a low a key event with each candidate trying to tie themselves and their campaign to American values and exceptionalism.

The challenge for a conservative on social issues is talking about them in a way that doesn't scare of moderates but is representative of conservative values.

I think Cain, Pawlenty, and even Gingrich did that part of it well.

There.  I could also make one of these pro and con things for Christie, Pawlenty, and Romney.

A lot of the campaign will be based on personal interaction with voters in Iowa and New Hampshire,  as well as fundraising.  Palin is good at both of these.

She may not run,  or if she runs she may not win.  However,  I am thinking it isn't good to go off as her enemy and contribute to a party division.  That is why I am not on here ranting about Romney or Pawlenty.  Whoever eventually is the nominee,  I want them to WIN.

I'm all for ranting and raving about candidates.  Better to get it out of the way.  What I get sick of is the bashing and insults of supporters and acting like they're just stupid idiots for liking someone.  I am all for criticism of Romney and Pawlenty. 

But with the exception of the Dan Troll I'm not telling anyone that likes them to get off the blog.  Because with the exception of Ron Paul and his sycophants potential candidates are going to wind up supporting someone else once they drop out and their supporters will go to that guy or choose their next favorite. 

You may get sick of hearing about Palin from her supporters but if she runs and drops out or if she just automatically goes into supporting mode, her supporters are likely to get behind who she likes with a good chunk of the enthusiasm they had for her.

Tell it to the Palinbots who've explictly stated that Palin and only Palin is worthy of voting for.  They're acting almost identically to the Paulbots of 2008.

I don't fault anyone for liking her personally or for agreeing with her politics.  That said, I have a difficult time taking seriously those so blind to her fatal flaws that they think she'd be a good candidate with which to beat Obama.

I don't know if any of our current contenders can do it, and none of them are ideal but shooting ourselves in the foot before the race begins would be a very bad idea.

The goal is to beat Obama.  The debate should center around which is the most conservative candidate who can win.  She scores well in the first part of that sentence, but fails miserably in the second.   As much as her supporters like to blame the MSM for that, it's her own damned fault.

Palin and Christi are both decent public speakers. Palin's accent isn't too bad and I'm super sensitive to that. I actually find Christi's a little more annoying. Barky's accent drives me nuts but no one on the planet makes me want to find the shishkabob skewers and take my ear drums out like Schumer.

I was actually scheduled to attend the event last night, but late in the afternoon one of my coworkers asked me to attend the Madison County Pork Producers annual meeting on behalf of our firm.  I didn't get to hear any political speeches, but I DID get to eat one hell of a smoked pork chop.  Plus I bought the 1st place Junior Division apple pie at the fundraising auction afterwards, so its not like I didn't accomplish something.

I'm still a Palin fan, but I'm open to other possibilities if she doesn't run or if she runs and flames out.

Palin doesn't show up anywhere unless there's a paycheck attatched.

funny then that she is doing this event to raise  money for military familes and not  getting a paycheck......I have learned the palinhaters  have no idea of what they are talking about.  It is an interesting case study on learning where one gets one's news by the talking points they sprout.

As far as the "debate"  Cain seemed to do the best.   Tpaw and Rick put me to sleep.   I missed the Newt speech  but heard he went into the weeds and didn't do very well.   and buddy  bombed.  So  at the moment those seriously talking about running   Cain and trump seesm to be the only ones to keep people's attention.  If this is the best the GOP can do Obama will bury them.   I can just see Mitt giving a speech in a pizza place putting everyone to sleep  while Obama is holding a rock concert down the street  talking about the rich white man keeping them down......

If you good people up ther in Iowa are tired of the cold weather and tired of the same old candidates, invite me to one of your meetings. You pick the subject. I'm one candidate who has the solutions to all of the problems, and I am anything but dull and boring.
