Greatest Handguns In Sci Fi History
— Ace

No L.O.O.K.E.R.?

And Solo's Maser-Mauser is only number three? Bumped down by Hellboy's gun, which is just a comically-oversized revolver shotgun? I mean, yeah, it's an okay gun, but it's silly.

Mal Reynold's gun, which is pedestrian, and just some kind of neovictorian hyper-revolver, gets mentioned but an important character/love interest on the show, Vera, doesn't?

Meh. Buncha dummies.

Thanks to gg.

He did include some laser technology weapons here and there too.  Of course it was pretty well stated that they were incredibly expensive.  So just as most places were near old West style colonization efforts, the weapons would be as well.  Because why do you need some hi-tech fancy thing when a few chemicals and a chunk of lead can kill something just as easily at a fraction of the price?

Meh. Jury is still out on that. It hasn't been slogged around the sandy 114+ degree desert or snowy mountain terrain enough yet. Plus delayed fuse 25mm ammo needs more testing. On top of that it is more of a platform for a DM, not replacement for everyday combat rifles.

Could be a game changer if it works though. When bad guys know they can't find defilade they either won't attack or are toast. That forces a change in tactics.

Posted by: Marcus at April 27, 2011 05:58 PM (qjVSg)

106 That list was PATHETIC.

At least Winona was on it, but still.

First of all, two of them were magic, not sci-fi. And four of them were just guns, exactly or very like something you could buy, although a couple of those were impractically designed.

And throwing in one video game gun destroys the list, because it's either about movies or the game guns have to push everything else off the list by sheer volume and cleverness.

I give that list a solid F+.

The external-ring .50-cal revolvers that were only on screen for a few seconds in the first Matrix movie should be on the list of "most under-used props." Nobody ever even mentions those.

114 How about the phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range?

115 The best part about The Fifth Element is Gary Oldman as a hillbilly-voiced overlord/slave to the wierd, evil Planet X or something.

It was a giant space meatball that made Gary's head bleed gravy.

I didn't get that either. Where did the chocolate syrup come from?

Wierd but cool movie. It was made by a French man after all.

117 "And what was that TV show where they had some kind of alien living gun that would wrap around your forearm and shoot energy bolts?" That would be the Skrill from Earth: Final Conflict

118 There was a Tom Selleck movie that had handguns with guided ammunition, mini-missiles as it were. "Runaway."

Which has the advantage of being both a handgun, and science-fiction. Shockingly.

119 > 57 No pulse rifle from Aliens. No minigun from Predator. No Vazquez' heavy machine gun from Aliens. This list sucks. Posted by: Empire of Jeff None of those are HANDguns. Heck, half the suggestions in these comments are bigger than handguns. I was gonna put in the sweet sweet Seras Victoria's 30mm Halconnen II but that's a long-gun not a hand gun.

120 Complain about the list all you like, but why the fuck is ace driving traffic to gawker... aka wankette

121 Although the list mentions the "needlers" used in the Stainless Steel Rat series of novels by Harry Harrison, they forgot to mention an even cooler gun, as exemplified by the following passage:

"When I turned around she was pointing a .75 caliber recoilless automatic at me, so big and ugly that she had to hold it in both tiny hands."

--"Slippery" Jim DiGriz upon meeting his future wife Angelina for the first time.

122 Seems to me the Sonic Screwdriver should get an Honorable Mention.

123 I'm thinking of Douglas Adams's Kill-o-Zap blaster.  Make it look mean.  Make it look evil.  If you have to stick on lots of pointy bits, so be it.  Make it very clear to someone on the wrong end of the blaster that things are going very badly for him.

124 I JUST bought Looker from Amazon for the low-dough price of five dollahs.

It's worth it for the title track alone.  Pure pop heaven.

125 No Mega Buster / X-Buster? Fail.

The Portal gun defeats all, though. Sure, it doesn't wound, but dropping objects on your enemies or accelerating them to terminal velocity before letting them crater into the ground is immensely more fun than simply shooting them.

Not to mention you can literally shoot the moon.

126 Star Trek phasers could not only be used as a weapon but use to cut through metal, heat rocks and break off rock fragment and could be made to explode like a bomb and a laser cat be use to cut through seams between stones and cuase ships to explode and prefor miricle surgery

127 I've watched LOOKER and never knew it was a Crichton film.  No wonder it was oddly intriguing.
