Green Jobs Aren't Even Green
— Ace

2% of all jobs are supposedly "Green Jobs." Which is a huge number, actually.

Could that possibly be right? Could so much of our economy actually depend on solar panels and wind-farms?

No.

Most jobs categorized are actually just... waste treatment and management jobs.

And the single biggest employer in the clean economy isnÂ’t a sexy startup like First Solar, or even a giant like GEÂ’s wind division. ItÂ’s the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, followed by the waste management and water treatment operations of the city of Los Angeles and New York. And waste management is followed by mass transit, which employs about 350,000 Americans. There are your most common clean workers: the garbage man and the bus driver.

Yeah, that'll pad the stats. But when Obama speaks of "investing in green jobs" he means "subsidizing 'green power' businesses," which is a tiny fraction of the small fraction of jobs which are designated "green."

Some questions for the President. Would be nice if we had a media interested in asking important questions.

How many “green jobs” need to be created over the next 14 months to fulfill your promise of lowering the unemployment rate to 5.5 percent by November 2012?

What qualifies you, or any other politician, to determine which jobs are worthy of creating?

What evidence do you have that government can create jobs for which there is little or no current market demand?

Oh, here's another question: Solyndra.

Okay, that's not in the form of a question. How about "Discuss the stuttering cluster***k of a miserable failure in losing $535 million (over a half billion) in federal loans to a political donor's nothing-but-subsidies fake 'business.'"

I'd sure like to read Solyndra's applications for those loans. I'd like to see their assertions that they predicted, honestly, that they believed their business model would bring them into the black in a short number of years.

22 I mentioned on a thread the other day that my brother sells and installs solar stuff, mostly pool and water heaters.  He's been doing it for 20 years.  His  green job requires him to drive a large diesel service truck whenever he goes out on a call.  He has also had more than one photovoltaic system given to him if he'd just take it off the roof, so, the photovoltaic system he plans to use to power the AC for part of his house is cost effective for him.  Because he didn't have to buy it and he got paid for removing it from someone else's house.

23 Okay, someone (as a joke, but one of those jokes where you see if the other guy will take you seriously) should apply for some of that sweet, sweet government cheese based on the following "green" energy design.

"A device for converting mechanical energy, produced by manual application of force, to electrical energy." (That would be patent type language) And then say you need A half-million dollars and you'd employ 6 thousand union workers.

At which point you'd put hook up a bunch of exercise bikes to a generator, and have about 1000 guys pedaling all at one time (the 6 thousand is to factor in for breaks and shift changes and such).

Extra points if the proposed technology violates the laws of thermodynamics. 2. Say that the planning stage can only be implemented from the cushiest offices I can find. And I think better when I have a hot secretary too. 3. Obtain ObamaBucks from some agency or other; it doesn't really matter which once since they've all got "green" initiative money to spend. 4. Play video games. Chat up hot secretary. Write up findings, which are "Nope, can't get something for nothing. But it was an important study!" 5. Disappear into the night, lie low for 3 or 4 months, repeat process.

Does anyone else remember the awful, ill-fated sitcom the Comedy Channel (or was it Cartoon Network?) created about Dubya?  It was called something stupid; "That's My Bush" I think?  Sounds lowbrow enough, so I think that's it.  Needless to say, the lefty entertainment world thought it was FABULOUS, just like they thought movies and stageplays depicting the assassination of a sitting president were also FABULOUS.

I wonder what they'd say if the anemic (but increasingly vocal) conservative faction of the entertainment industry were to put together some kind of sitcom - web-based, b/c no way in hell would any network buy it - based on the SCOAMF's torturously SCOAMFed presidency.  You wouldn't even need to do much scriptwriting.  Just take actual text from actual speeches, press conferences, and press briefings and incorporate them into the dialogue.  It'd be the single funniest thing to happen to the world of situational comedy since Rose Nylon first waxed lyrical about St. Olafm, MN.

I did consulting work for a different solar company in Fremont, near Solyndra, and having built their business model I can say that it is possible for them to turn a profit based on several things, but holy shit how did they spend that much money?

The biggest factor for the company I saw (and would be true for every other one) is better efficiency in their cells. Everyone says they can theoretically do it but they keep banging against limits and not breaking through.

The other factor for this company was manufacturing everything in China, taking advantage of low interest loans here and tax holidays there. The green jobs here in California was about 2 dozen people, mostly engineers, that was going to expand to maybe 50 people in the U.S. once production got rolling. China would have gained 300+ jobs.

I don't know.  Sometimes that Jake Tapper guy shows brief flashes of journalistic integrity and actually asks a tough question.  Maybe if we slipped him a quaalude or something we could force him into one of those rare lucid moments.

77 55 Any of you morons driving through or flown over the wind farms of west Texas? What a nightmare! Flashing strobe lights all over the place. Really bright ones. It's got to be driving farmers insane.

I can only imagine what kind of carnage lies below those things......in bodies of dead birds and bats.

In addition to the tragedy of whacking bird's wings and heads off.....those prop-swinger designs are antiquated and high-maintenance, compared to the newer Helix design of wind generators.

The Helix designs are viewed as a 'solid' so the flying critters avoid them. And the design does not vibrate itself to death or self destruct in high winds. But then GE doesn't build the helix design wind generators, so....

Doesn't interest me unless Manhattan is under it when it falls.

The SCOAMF told us he'd stop the seas from rising so I don't see that we've got a problem here.

Anyone watching Megan Kelly?  In her discussion on Chaz Bono, she said "It's amazing how brave the transgendered are! They have to endure so much discrimination..." etc, etc..

Having your dick cut off, or your clit stretched and rolled up 'into a penis' so you can play pretend games of 'lets be the opposite sex for awhile' is a choice.  It in no way compares to skin color, or how big your nose is, or eye color 'crazy eyes Bachmann', or anything else.  (Thats right.. having baby blues are crazy eyes now)

I think Megan Kelly is saying what she thinks she should say here.  She lives in the proverbial 'ivory tower' of good looks, much in the way we accuse Mercedes Marxists of being the same.  Like when Arriana Huffington says insane things now and sounds like a Stalinist most of the time, when in real life, she was a conservative, married Michael Huffington who she knew was gay just for the money and divorced him in the no-fault divorce state of CA where she got half his money (i'm shocked, shocked to find he was gay!1!!).  Now she feels guilty and is saying what she thinks she needs to say to sleep at night.  She's a cut-throat who'd sell her own Mother down the river if she would benefit from it

82 I'd sure like to read Solyndra's applications for those loans. I'd like to see their assertions that they predicted, honestly, that they believed their business model would bring them into the black in a short number of years.

The same guys that wrote those applications moved on and wrote the intervention plans for Libya -- "days, not weeks..."

Congress has tried to get this information via subpoena. Does anyone know if heading into bankruptcy freezes emails and other correspondence so it can't be obtained?

West Texas is just fine.  The problem is that there's no population density out there, and no energy pipeline sufficient to send all that energy back east, where it's needed.

I'll bet they read like Chris Dodd's mortgage application with Coutrywide.

The Feds can get what records they want from a business. Always.
If they exist, they can get them.

Solyndra was just a dummy corp to bundle cash, make photo ops, and launder money.

89 Regarding the jobs issue - I was on this rant a couple weeks ago on Google+ and over at Doubleplusundead.  What we need aren't "Green Energy Jobs"  it's just energy jobs.  I am not an economist but from what I see one of the things (in my opinion a major factor) holding back the economy from recovering is the cost of energy.  It's a feedback loop companies begin hiring and then energy prices go up bringing the hiring etc.  to a screeching halt or in the very near future a reversal.  The biggest jobs program that Obama could implement is to get rid of Ken Salazar followed quickly by that idiot at the DoE.

But Rick Perry is a Jesus Freak and the Tea Party is racist.

And Gibson guitars, specifically the SG, are also racist.

Hmmmm... $535 million in federal loan guarantees to Solyndra for the stated purpose (stated by none other than BHO) of "creating jobs."   But this plant according to the press reports had a total of 1,100 jobs.

Now maybe I'm just a silly right wing nut job -- to have the audacity to subject a government program to the analytical laser of basic fucking arithmetic -- but $535 million divided by 1,100 is just shy of $500,000 per job!   Assuming that, since the stimulus was paid out, the average employee there got $50K a year for two years, that means that someone else stole something like $400 million.   Hmmmmm....

The government would have done better giving $100,000 grants to 5,000 people who can show that they can match that investment with personal funds to start small businesses, and then gotten out of the way and let them go ahead and try.   If 1% make it, you've got 50 small businesses who might actually hire new employees.

Or, better still, just leave that $535 million in tax dollars in the private economy and let whoever earned it decide how to spend it.   Who knows?   Maybe they'd start small businesses with their own money, and not need a government grant to do it.

But neither a "small ball" approach nor a free market approach wouldn't allow Obama to line the pockets of his rich donors.

Is this the reason he moved his speech back a week?  Did he have a 'heads-up' that this repudiation of his 'green jobs' initiative was going to break just as he unveiled his massive "plan"?

I question the timing...

And just for grins, I'd sure like to know what the executives of this company were being paid (salaries and perks and bonuses and anything else).

It might be verrrry enlightening to those of us in flyover country, whose taxes were used for this half-a-billion-dollar "loan" that will now never be repaid.  (Over a million dollars was used for lobbying, as I understand it; and tens of thousands of dollars went back to Washington DC as donations to various Dem candidates.  How nice.  EXACTLY how I would have spent my money if it had been left in my pocket instead of being taxed away by the IRS -- NOT!)
