— Open Blogger I'll admit, it's an ugly gun. However, I applaud their efforts to circumvent the stupid New York state SAFE ACT.

Prototypes for the newly designed AR-15 are hitting gun shops across New York, as gun shops and machinists have designed a rifle that complies with the anti-gun law. At least one gun shop has received a letter from state police saying that the new AR-15 style rifles should be legal in the state as long as they donÂ’t have some of the features that the law prohibits.
(...)
Features like adjustable stocks, pistols grips, and flash suppressors has been deemed to be unlawful on these rifles, mainly because it makes them LOOK mean. And we all know how little these anti-gun lawmakers really know about guns, as the “Ghost gun” video illustrated. The new AR-15 design did away with the pistol grip which gives the gun an odd paintball gun look. The stock is fixed as well, but at least New Yorkers now have a legal way to own an AR-15, a fact which is still driving some gun control activists mad.
Oh and in case you missed it from this morning's news dump, be sure to check this video out. This guy makes a mockery of his City Council's plan to ban loaded guns in public places.

63: " The fact that a gun can be artistically beautiful doesn't make it art."
Does this standard apply to other objects? Is a statue not art? How about a statue that is part of a water fountain?
I would offer that functionality is not a detractor from its nature as art. But that's just how I see it.

Posted by: joncelli at February 10, 2014 03:08 PM (RD7QR)
Here in my beloved Clownifornia, a pistol grip is defined in agonizing detail. Basically it comes down to the angle of the grip.
So the same piece of plastic mounted at one angle is legal, mounted at another angle, it's pearl-clutchingly evil and worthy of a long term in state pound-me-in-the-ass prison......but only if it's present at that angle with certain other pearl-clutchingly evil features.
Posted by: IllTemperedCur at February 10, 2014 11:25 AM (TIIx5)
I apologize if that seemed to be my point, I wasn't being clear. Guns are not art because they are tools. They can become artistically attractive in their design, but they aren't art.
Statues can be art because that's their purpose and reason for existence (caryatids and other column art sort of blurs the line).
But what art is and how people have confused beauty or attractiveness with art is a huge discussion all its own. Mostly I just wanted to say that being ugly doesn't matter in a tool.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor at February 10, 2014 11:25 AM (zfY+H)
I don't have a 'fraidy assault thingie, but I'll make a case for my 1911 as a work of art.
Not just that it's pretty, but the elegance of the design. The trigger only pulls if your palm is on the butt safety, the slide knows to stay back when the magazine is empty, the buttons are all where your thumb wants to go (except that I'm left handed and mine isn't).
It's basically a set of mechanical if/then statements.

Nice thing is that the kick from a Mosin will launch you out of range of return fire. The next nice thing is that the adjustable sight isn't calibrated in feet, or tenths of a minute of arc - it's calibrated in counties, and the enemy is still in range.

If I had gone to a better college, I would be capable of answering the question of "What is Art?".
But all of my classes were technical. I have no art background. I just call art as I see it. I am not able to draw the distincion that a tool cannot be art. Or vice versa.

I agree. When the Soviet money dried up, these organizations kicked it into high gear scamming money out of the federal government.
Not all non profits are scams, some are genuine great organizations, but many, perhaps most of the biggest at least, are major rip off groups.
And many are violating the tax laws continuously, which would be a great place for the GOP to target. A big time congressional study, expose, and news push on the topic would be incredibly harmful to the left and put them seriously on the defensive. You can see how they react every time people start scrutinizing Planned Parenthood or PBS. They lose their momentum, get distracted from their other efforts and go wild on defense.
Its because they rely on federal money for losing propositions to survive. Conservatives never have success starting this trash up because they quit once the effort doesn't make money or break even. Leftists shrug at that, knowing they can suck at the federal teat to keep it going.
Cut those off at the knees and you cripple the left. But as blaster notes, these organizations are good at corrupting lawmakers by promises of jobs and donations, so nothing gets done.

Well, on the good side, it's going to be awful damn hard for the libs to craft legislation that bans that stock. Can't ban what you can't decribe.

CA leftists love to caterwaul about how stocks like this, and "bullet buttons" violate the intent of the legislature. I get an inordinate amount of pleasure from pointing out that if the CA legislature had REALLY wanted to ban AR15s, they would have written the law to ban AR15s, rather than leaving in a bunch of exceptions that allow people to own the squirrel rifle (even in neutered form).

Used to be that the pistol grip was one of the components Made in the USA, which counted towards the minimum parts for legal import. Eliminate that and you may have eliminated an entire range of models from import without specifying a ban.
Its now more of a totemic thing to ban. AR-15 obviously not an import but ban the grippy thing anyhow

The outcome of those activities can be determined by the use of a stopwatch, same as the 100-meter dash. Hence, sport.
If it takes a panel of bribeable "judges" to rule on the "artistic merits" of an athlete's routine, then non-sport. Performing art, just like the acrobats in the circus.

A few minutes ago, I just invented the ultimate petard hoist to use against gun grabbers... it goes something like this:
"Government action over the last century, counting wars, forced relocations, famines caused by land reforms, executions, and ethnic cleansing would be among humanity's leading causes of death if counted together. Clearly, we need to take immediate action and outlaw governments. For safety. For the children."
I can't wait to use it on a live Liberal, but I've noticed that they're fairly hard to find in this part of Texas. Oh well, that's what the internet is for.

Which Section of the ACA <thumbing the dog-eared pages furiously> is it that makes that division of 50 and 99 employees? 26 U.S. Code § 4980H(c)(2) defines a "large employer" to ":mean[ ], with respect to a calendar year, an employer who employed an average of at least 50 full-time employees on business days during the preceding calendar year..."
Nothing about 99 employees. Nope. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Bupkis.
Lord Obama must be doing some of that interpretin' when he reads the language Congress chose -- "at least 50" -- to really mean "over ninety-nine".
