Gunman Murders Three At IHOP in Carson City, Nevada
— Ace

He also committed suicide, and I absolutely hate it when a headline includes the perp's death in the numbering of the dead.

Three people were murdered, and one psychopath offed himself. Let's not confuse things.

He shot more people than he killed -- initial reports were 9 to 13 but I don't know what the latest numbers are.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting.

Ralph Swagler, who owns a Locals Barbecue in the strip mall, told the Reno Gazette-Journal that he saw a man pull up outside the IHOP in a blue minivan. Swagler said the man, who was carrying a rifle, shot a man on a motorcycle. The gunman then walked into the IHOP and started shooting. The gunman also fired at the Locals Barbecue, hitting the restaurant's windows.

The Reno Journal-Gazette was reporting that two of the people killed were National Guard members in uniform.

I know that it's entirely possible he was just some guy who lost it.  Heck, maybe he was mad at the slow service he always got at IPLOD.  But those always come to mind after 'Muslim Terrorist' unless the MFM releases details.  You know like "The gunman, John Skeeterlander, was known to have a grudge against the morning-shift manager..."  When they're completely mum, I start wondering "Hmmm.  I wonder if this guy is of swarthy complexion and prays 5 times a day."

39 1:20 p.m.: Five of the nine people shot at the Carson City IHOP this morning were Nevada National Guard members, spokeswoman April Conway said. Two of the three people who died were guard members, Conway said. She would not speculate on a motive by the shooter. "All of our bases in Northern Nevada have stepped up their security," Conway said. "We had planned to do this any way in light of the impending 9/11 (anniversary). This is just one more thing we're going to implement to keep our members safe."

Honestly, the term was (probably not maliciously, even) coined to cover automatic rifles- such as the M-16 and AK-47.  It was then co-opted (probably maliciously) to cover the civilian variants there-of to scare people into thinking any semi-automatic, pistol-gripped rifle should be banned.

The same way a "sawed-off" shotgun is somehow scarier than a regular shotgun.

64 If a shooter goes in to kill a bunch of people, and sees men in uniform, he's going to shoot the uniforms first - since they are the most likely to fight back. Note that this shooter had already killed somebody outside the building, so there was no option to cancel the attack when he saw the guardsmen inside. My point is that the high number of guardsmen among the victims does not cut against the "postal ihop employee" theory.

Posted by: sven10077 at September 06, 2011 04:58 PM (AEIYh) Well, anyone can say anything, but IIRC the military terminology of "assault weapons" refers to those used in storming positions, bunkers, etc. Like flamethrowers and grenades. I have not seen it used in that context to cover rifles or meant as a "category of weapons" but as a "category of use." Referring to rifles as "assault weapons" was AFAICT a political invention, probably because "assault rifles" would have been inaccurate and some frustrated pol changed one of the words to satisfy an arguing aide.

I have a theory that Blue Minivans, like Prius, get their superior Gas mileage by draining the Testosterone from men driving them and using that to help fuel the vehicle...

Nothing says pussy whipped than a man behind the wheel of a minivan. Sad but true.

88 It's still the case that military can't carry a gun on post, right?  They have to store their weapons with the armorer?

I don't know the rules for NG, but when you're in uniform you have to follow a lot of rules.  How many recruiters and soldiers need to be attacked before it's acceptable for the military to carry weapons?

Perhaps just E7s and up?  I'd even order a handful in each unit to carry.

There was a day when I agreed with you. But seeing how a minivan can pull about 4/6MPG better than a large SUV that seats 8 it may be the gas pump that beats a man into submission.

The nice thing about being a man and driving a minivan is that there is plenty of room for your wife to store her pocketbook containing your balls.

I've never really understood the term "assault weapon."

Isn't that redundant?

Sturmgewehr is what the Germans called it, thus the assault (to storm) part. An assault weapon, by definition, has at least two firing modes, one of which is full-auto.

Modern variants usually have three fire modes: single shot, burst of 3, or full-auto.

Caveat: the MBM believes that anything than fires a projectile is an assault weapon. Even your antique Kentucky Rifle.

In the CC class I had the instructors specifically pointed out that the law does not allow for you to play John Rambo.  You cannot go charging into a firefight.  The pistol in your holster is ment only to defend yourself if you cannot get out of the area.
I am not sure (yet) on the Nevada laws, but I am pretty sure that guy couldn't go in and try to take the nutbag down and not violate the law.

Posted by: Deathknyte at September 06, 2011 03:34 PM (bN68Z)

116 118 DeathKnyte,

here in Indiana, back home in ohio, in texas, and lousiana you can kill an individual whose actions place you OR a bystander in lethal harm's way.....

you'll need to lawyer up...."better call Saul" but it's the law....

the devil is in the details but the states with a stand your ground precedent usually are lenient on "public defense" but unless a state law says directly you are blanket immune when protecting another usual instruction stresses the notion of self-family defense.....

Nevada is a stand your ground state with no proviso for 'defense of others" as a justification...so the CC citizen would have exposed himself to the whim of prosecution for the rest of his life as the law is currently written

I can't comment on the NV law specifically.  But in most states, if not all, you're permitted to use deadly force to protect yourself or another innocent person from death or serious bodily injury.  You don't have to stand there watching the gunman go "BOOM HEADSHOT" on everyone until he turns the gun on you.  That would be ludicrous.

Posted by: yinzer at September 06, 2011 03:47 PM (LJ9nk)

119 122 Yinzer,

that is true after a fashion but you are always at the whim of idiot DAs unless the law says explicitly you are immune and sets the test scenario so low you can walk over the pole so to speak....

there was a case to my north here in greenwood where public pressure was intense because a local man gunned down a freelance moving and packing engineer who was attacking his friend hand to hand to the point that there was by the police chief and DA's judgement regarding witness testimony the reasonable fear of lethal force being used on a victim in an assault.

here's a link

http://preview.tinyurl.com/3qgzm7f

That is a low bar to walk over....

in some states like Ohio used to be you could get prosecuted even if you were trying to retreat and got cornered....

I prefer the "good neighbors" law.

120 Lots of good theories here for what's behind the shooting; but sort of surprised no one has mentioned the Battery Cage Wars, of which the Batter House struggle is a clear off-shoot. This could an incident in the ongoing market-share struggle between IHOP and Waffle House, but it could also be about chickens coming home to roost.

125 BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN Why American men should boycott American women http://boycottamericanwomen.blogspot.com I am an American man, and I have decided to boycott American women. In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, donÂ’t know how to cook or clean, donÂ’t want to have children, etc. Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women? American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible, and highly unchaste. The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least. This blog is my attempt to explain why I feel American women are inferior to foreign women (non-American women), and why American men should boycott American women, and date/marry only foreign (non-American) women. BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN! BRAND NEW: Buy the Boycott American Women book. After reading this book, I promise you that you will never even think about dating an American woman ever again, or else I will give you your money back.
