— Monty "Hard Times"
by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
There was a Camptown Man who used to plow and sing
He loved that mule and the mule loved him
When the day got long as it does about now
I'd hear him singing to his muley-cow
Calling, Come on my sweet old girl,
I'd bet the whole damn world
That we're gonna make it yet to the end of the row
Singing hard times ain't gonna rule my mind
Hard times ain't gonna rule my mind, Bessie
Hard times ain't gonna rule my mind no more
He said it's a mean old world, heavy in need
That big machine is just a-picking up speed
We're supping on tears, we're supping on wine
We all get to heaven in our own sweet time
So come all you Asheville boys
Turn up your old-time noise
And kick 'til the dust comes up from the cracks in the floor
Singing, hard times ain't gonna rule my mind, brother
Hard times ain't gonna rule my mind
Hard times ain't gonna rule my mind no more
But the Camptown man, he doesn't plow no more
I seen him walking down to the Superette store
Guess he lost that nag and he forgot that song
Woke up one morning and the mule was gone
So come on, you ragtime kings
Come on you dogs and sing
Pick up your dusty old horn and give it a blow
Playing, hard times ain't gonna rule my mind
Hard times ain't gonna rule my mind, sugar
Hard times ain't gonna rule my mind no more

What IS it about the Rich that makes them crave Socialism, anyway?
They think they are taking pity on the lessers when they vote for Socialists.
It asuages them of the guilt associated with a life devoid of moral purpose or clarity. To them, a vote for a Socialist is as charitable as they will get until their accountant forces them to donate to an actual charity (for tax purposes).
Posted by: garrett at August 20, 2011 06:20 AM (hYhy8)
They don't want actual socialism, they want feudalism. In addition to living in luxury as they are accustomed, they'll get to bathe in the gratitude of the serf rabble--thank you for the crumbs you allow us to keep!!
Actual socialism would reduce them to our level, no matter how much they work or innovate (or how much money their innovative, hard-working great-grandfather left them). They sure as hell don't want THAT.
Mostly, I think they* just don't want other people to be allowed to become rich, because what fun is it to have nice things if everyone else can earn them?
* And I think it's mostly people who inherited their wealth, or accumulated it on the market with no real risk to their physical well-being. Rich people who started out poor or middle-class don't seem real big on giving it all to the government to squander on people who drop out of high school.

"Immigrant Song"
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

I don't think so. I'm looking at the CD right now, and it looks like regular plastic. But it does have a thick cardboard cover instead of just a paper insert. Maybe that's made out of mule-plowed hemp. I'll smoke it later on and let you know if I get a buzz off of it.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are my favorite folkies, and have been for years. I'm sure they're big libs (like nearly everyone else in that gig) but they're awfully nice folks just the same. I've been to a couple of festivals where they actually joined right in a campfire jam session. I think Welch is probably one of the best female songwriters to come along in a long, long time.

The irony of it all was that this woman's fortune was made by her father, who sold breakfast cereal and a cheap coffee substitute. The folks she idolized and wanted to be one with wouldn't have given her the time of day but for the fact that they needed money and she had it. She might have been a lovely person, and apparently contributed lots of money to charity, but clearly never enough to hurt her standard of living to any degree.
I see her as the model for the socialist capitalist. The contradiction is really because these people want to live like royalty.

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears,While we all sup sorrow with the poor; There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;Oh Hard times come again no more.
Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,Hard Times, hard times, come again no moreMany days you have lingered around my cabin door;Oh hard times come again no more. While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,There are frail forms fainting at the door;Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will sayOh hard times come again no more. There's a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away,With a worn heart whose better days are o'er:Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day,Oh hard times come again no more. Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave,Tis a wail that is heard upon the shoreTis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly graveOh hard times come again no more.It was first recorded in 1905, although I just learned that Springsteen did it as a tour encore, making it SFW for them as can't read notes.

Would not give you 10 cents for the lot of them. Scratch their surface and you'll find your downfall just beneath. By your philosophy, you cannot EVER be a functioning part of their world. You are the enemy and must be vanquished or eradicated by any means. That is an inarguable fact-not hyperbole.

Brought to you during the Bush presidency by the dulcet-toned spokespeople at PBS.
As I said in another thread yesterday, here is the term I heard on an NPR "panel talk" radio show in the morning: Texas Ugly.
No talk about hard times under Obama. Just chatter about how fucking mind-boggling it is to them about the thought of a Republican. Just the thought. The phrase then pops out, Texas Ugly.
This is what it will be. No matter who is the R nominee, he or she will be painted as irresponsible, crazy, mean, and just plain ugly.
The low-info "independent" voters will hear it, buy into it, and decide to stick with the JEF.
We are boned.

The smug rich self-righteous elitist assholes want four more years of Obama because they want to feel good about themselves for voting for the "educated", "smart" choice. It has nothing to do with the state of the country or the state of the economy.

Maybe, but Welch especially seems drawn to fairly conservative and religious themes in her songs. She and Rawlings deliberately chose a style and mode of music that is deeply conservative -- not modern "folk" so much as the old Deep South country ballads and dirges. (My only beef with their newest CD is that it sometimes gets a bit too dirge-y. Only "Six White Horses" is uptempo, though that's a great play-along song.)
My church has made her song "By the Mark" (from her first CD) a standard.

They do not care. The combined income for the obamas in 2009 was 5.5 million and last year was over 1 million. Supposedly from book sales. Sounds fishy to me, royalties from book sales are not all that much according to an author I talked to last spring.
Anyway, must be nice to have an income of over a million dollars a year from a job that pays 400K with bennies.
BTW how hasn't he run over on the 100K travel expenses per year that he gets? Plus he is only allowed 19K a year for entertainment. I suppose all the "entertainers" that come to the white house could perform for free but I doubt that the people who set up for the weekly parties do it for free.

Part of it is that I love old-time music, and Rawlings/Welch seem like they time-traveled here from 1933. Their songs and arragements are very Carter Family-esque, but Welch doesn't just keep recycling the old standards: she writes brand-new songs that sound like they're a hundred years old. Rawlings can make that old 1933 Epiphone of his do amazing things -- he's one of the most underrated guitar players now working, I think.
Welch's last effort ("Soul Journey", back in 2003) left me a little cold, especially after the masterful "Time (The Revelator)" in 2001. Apparently they felt that "Soul Journey" was a misfire too, because their latest is a move back to their spare, sparse, fully acoustic style.
And I would recommend to everyone who likes this kind of music to try and see them live. They are one of the best live acts now working.

Only in a state where they can control it.
Thanks to 2010, and the fact that many of the Republican governors in those states are ballsy (Walker, Kasich, Corbett, Scott, etc), it will be limited to a California or Illinois. Neither of them matter if Obama is already losing in the high seven figures in the popular vote and by a few dozen (at least) in the electoral tally.

Well, I'm not thinking of states so much as cities. It's not easy to run the Philadelphia precincts from Harrisburg.
For instance, what happens if a couple of precincts start reporting thousands of votes?

Roughly, no. (a) Republicans don't do voter fraud. It's not so much morality as competence. (b) In primary states, the elections are run by the state apparatus. (c) In caucus states, the votes are often not secret. (d) There's no geographical base for the fraud. Most voter fraud happens in highly Democrat precincts, where there's little opposition to shennanigans.
I'm sure there will be an effort to promote Romney and/or denigrate Perry in the media and elsewhere, but no actual fraud of any consequence.

Re: Vote Fraud. One variable I have not seen discussed is the effect of the Interstate Compact on the Electoral College pushed through a number of state legislatures. The purpose of this compact is to avoid the "tragedy" that the president elect is not the popular vote winner. It requires the state's electors to cast their electoral college votes for the national popular vote winner. An end run around the need for a constitutional amendment. I think its in effect in Wa State, Maryland, Illinois and a few others. I think Ahnald actually vetoed it in Cal. Whatever you think about the popular vote v. electoral college thing, the stealth method here pisses me off. Plus it seems poorly crafted.
We have Rs who support this. Unfortunately, I think even Teh Fred speaks of it favorably.
I read the damn thing a while ago and it has no viable dispute resolution provision. For instance, would Washington voters have standing to challenge shady vote counting or 135% turnout in Illinois if it would tip Wa's electors to cast votes for the candidate the majority of Washingtonians didn't vote for? What courts would have jurisdiction to untangle this? Who decides whether this is a state compact that satisfies exclusion from Congressional ratification. In short, chaos plus. And we know who profits from chaos and forcing constitutional crisis, don't we.

Obama accuses Congress of holding back U.S. recovery
VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass., Aug 20 (Reuters) - A vacationing U.S. President Barack Obama accused Congress on Saturday of holding back the U.S. economic recovery by blocking "common sense" measures he said would create jobs and help growth.
In remarks recorded on Wednesday on his campaign-style bus tour in Illinois and aired during his holiday in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, Obama said the stalled construction, trade and payroll tax bills could give a boost to the economy.
"The only thing preventing us from passing these bills is the refusal by some in Congress to put country ahead of party. That's the problem right now. That's what's holding this country back," the president said in his weekly radio address, which is also transmitted on the Internet.

Dead dreams
Dead dreams flying flags
Flapping into the breeze
Wave your coloured rags
Hard times
Were they never any better
Maybe never ever
The slogan will take you like lemmings to the cliff
You'll feel better than ever
And into the abyss
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Hard times
Were they never any better
Every crack every crevice will be sanitised
There'll be no more war
There'll be no more choice
And those not behind you
Should go live elsewhere
Spies everywhere
You put the poison in the air
Hard times
Were they never any better
The words cry for help
But the music says no
Every sentence a siege of national pride
Hard times
Were they never any better, maybe
And i
I won't answer the call
I don't like khaki
I won't wear your uniform
There'll be no more war
There'll be no more choice
There'll be no more war
There'll be no more choice
Hard times
Were they ever any better

Posted by: George Orwell at August 20, 2011 10:34 AM (AZGON)
Not necessarily. The select committee is rigged to fail. It seems more likely that they will cut some small amount of spending which polls well than anything else. Congress will then either override the 2013 sequestration* or place those cuts in the out years. Other Congresses have done it, so why wouldn't they?
*50% defense cuts, 50% social programs for amount of spending not cut. So cutting only $700B means that $500B would be subject.

I agree, and this seems like your experience. While this story more closely matches the statements of Ryan's friends, Hayes is also the one who came close to saying this was a done deal when indications were/are that a run is unlikely. He needs to wait until he has actual quotable sources instead of mixing true statements and lines from wishcasters.

Yea, you are probably right, in the end they want power, and if Perry is the vehicle to it, they will grudgingly be on board.

This place is for "Tory democracy"; the idea that Rightist change can happen by pandering to voters - the same voters voting themselves free shit from your stash. Which is not a terrible idea, I'll point out; but it pays to have other options in case this idea fails.

Perry and Bachmann will actually try to win the election.
That is enough for me.
All the Frums and Krauthammers will try to dip their biscuits in the gravy once Perry, Bachmann, or whoever else wins the nomination. Even though they ran them down and denounced the Tea Party as rubes and rustics.

curious is an ass (and probably nuts), but don't assume it is representative of New Yorkers, and don't think that the politics of those who control New York are indicative of the rest of them.

I'm married to a New Yorker and my in-laws and all the extended family live in NYC. I just got back from there. They lost 265 people from their parish Church on 9-11. My husband lost several people from his high school class. His brother's sister in law lost her husband who was a NYC firefighter.
They told me how "afraid" they were when they saw our military on the streets after 9-11. They all voted for Hillary and they all voted for Obama.
That's what I base my opinion on. The 200-300 individuals I know who live there and vote lib and the 0 people I know who live there and don't vote lib.

They're liberals and our president was a Republican. Of course they were afraid of our military. Because they have fantasies of what would happen to their opponents if they were in charge. If they are afraid of some ridiculous fantasy a Republican might do its because that's what they would do if given the opportunity.

As a rule, Mallamutt's right. Establishment types like establishment jobs and there will be plenty.
But when the candidate is Tea Party, establishment types have attempted to throw the election out of spite when they actually feel threatened with a loss. Rick Perry's tightest competitor his last campaign as Governor was Debra Medina who won the debates and then was shafted by Perry as if a "truther" (if she were a "truther" then Alex Jones wouldn't have shredded her campaign). A different type of example is O'Donnell who just can't quite "get it" that her ship has sailed. Granting her faults (from endorsing masturbation on tv no matter her youthful age, through debatable finance records, to the coffin's nail: "I'm not a witch"), O'Donnell's campaign was trashed by the establishment before she ever won the primary and though she did get some funding, the establishment never let up the vitriol. The only point of why her vs. the incumbent, she would have voted against the "common values" uni-party establishment.

I just got an email from a soon to be ex-associate that is so stupid it burns.
She emailed me a petition from Move on dot org to fulfill Buffet's wish of taxing him and all the super wealthy. I asked her to think about why super billionaire George Soros (moveondotorg) would be an advocate for taxing Warren Buffet, himself, et al.
Here is her response:
" If you really thought about it you might realize it's the only thing that will get our economy going. You should read about the New Deal which got us out of the depression, the repub's our doing the exact opposite and the lower taxes have been effect for how many years, where are the jobs, obviously that's not working. In addition Warren Buffet has been calling for higher taxes for the wealthy for some time now, he realizes his responsibility to his country."
I wanted to email her back: "the stupid, it burns". Taxing the wealthy is the only thing that will get our economy going? hokay... um..
After several attempts at either factual arguments or downright dripping sarcasm, I finally responded by telling her Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn could not have stated her position more clearly. Fuckin' statist bitch. The propaganda is working, folks. This gal likely gets her politics from Comedy Central.
Is EoJ on call for stuff like this?
Gawd. I'm just done with these people. They want class warfare, and they're gonna get it, bloody though it may be. ejits.

My priest is retired marine infantry. At my son's confirmation he mentioned that it was the birthday of the marine corps and everyone clapped. On the way home a carful of the NYC contingent said, "You guys down here really like the military a lot more than we do in NY." I asked what kind of ignorant asshole wouldn't like the military? (Remember they said this to the daughter of a career army officer).
I had no idea they were afraid of them but it did give me some insight

New York has been controlled by the populist left for a very long time, at least as far back as Tammany Hall. There have been flashes of rationality from its pols, but the media has been reliably left-of-center for so long that the typical New Yorker is drowned out by the fellow travelers on the UWS and the hipsters downtown and in Brooklyn. Add in a heavy union presence, with their control of the political process, and many New Yorkers see it as an uphill battle just to get someone rational on the ballot. In addition, the huge influx of foreigners makes it difficult to creat a sense of community with any historical basis.
Your experience with New Yorkers is not indicative of the rest. I won't deny that some, perhaps a large minority, feel the way your relatives do, but there are many New Yorkers who are to the left of us, but still love our country and feel anger, not fear when they think of 9/11, and feel pride, not revulsion when they see our military.
