"Winter is coming," announced an organizer at SaturdayÂ’s Occupy Wall Street General Assembly. "And I am cold." But itÂ’s worse than that. Organizers admit that the protests may not be able to survive the winter in their current form. As temperatures drop, the bustling mini-community downtown will probably be reduced to a small group of shivering, hard-core occupiers. And when that happens, the 99 percent will start looking less like a movement, and more like a winter survival course.
Looks like some faith in Global Warming™ is about to be tested.
Update from JWF:
The city has stripped Occupy Wall Street protesters of their power.Dozens of firefighters and police officers entered Zuccotti Park Friday morning to confiscate generators and gas canisters.
I'm betting it won't be long until #OccupyWallStreet becomes #reOccupyMomsBasement.

Occupy Wall Street protesters will march to five banks in Manhattan on Friday and deliver thousands of letters to the companies — in the form of a “mass paper airplane throwing.”
According to the plans for the march detailed on the movementÂ’s website, at 1 p.m., protesters will meet at Bryant Park in midtown and march to the headquarters of Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and JP Morgan Chase.
Thousands of letters that were submitted to occupytheboardroom.org will be folded into paper airplanes, and at some of the banks, protesters will execute a “mass paper airplane throwing event,” after which the planes will be collected in a large mailbag and left in the lobbies of the banks...
Am I the only one who thinks the idea of throwing planes at buildings of economic significance in the middle of New York City is, to put it mildly, in extremely bad taste?

I will enjoy the oncoming nor'easter much more knowing they'll be shivering their pathetic asses off, presumably near the Fisherman's Statue on the waterfront.
If only the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure would join them!
Maybe "proudonkey" will join them. I'd do the five-minute drive from my warm, cozy house to see that!

18 There has been some talk locally that the "Occupy" crowd wants to come to Gloucester, MA.
I will enjoy the oncoming nor'easter much more knowing they'll be shivering their pathetic asses off, presumably near the Fisherman's Statue on the waterfront.
That would require a whole crate of Jell-O pudding cups. I don't even have the proper *ahem* equipment for a pudding dip, but I would buy the pudding anyway and give it away with printed instructions on proper dipping technique, just to do my part for the celebration.

I wonder if they ever tried just putting the used vegetable oil in straight from the kitchen. Oh to be so green and so clueless.

Yes, indeed. Last night the rain changed over to snow, there's a lovely coating on everything now, with just a light breeze to add zest. With luck, OWS will shrivel into the nothingness it came from.
Right about now, imho, is the moment to contrast the Tea Party with OWS, I doubt you could find two more opposing venues. Shame we don't have some sort of organization to do this.

By the 5 minute mark all I could think of was how nice it would be if someone came into the scene, took the damned microphone, beat a few OWS with the microphone, and then shoved it up Schiff's a--. If something like that happened in the last seven minutes please let me know and I will go back and view it.

Hell, why stop there? I think people living within six blocks of Zuccotti Park should be required to Foster a Protester(tm). They would provide food, shelter, hygienic facilities (bathrooms, clean kitchens) and clothing to one or more of the poor, shivering masses huddled in their filthy sleeping bags in the park. Ah, but it's only evil if it makes something they want but can't afford, or need but don't want to pay for.
So Starbucks is okay, because they can afford their Grande Soy No-Fat Latte with a shot of espresso. But Walmart is bad because they don't want to have to pay for that salad.

Great thing about this is that it's likely to be freezing rain, which is even better than snow.
Freezing rain, compared to snow, has more of what you want (i.e., makes things utterly miserable and makes staying outdoors hellish) with none of the charm of snow. It's also flows, unlike snow, and gets into things and makes them wet.
Excellent, Smithers.

Fox 5 News Reporter Assaulted at Occupy Wall Street
MYFOXNY.COM - A protester, angered by the presence of a news crew inside Zuccotti Park Friday morning, threatened to stab Fox 5 News reporter John Huddy.
What has been an otherwise violence-free period during his six weeks covering the Occupy Wall Street movement, took a turn for John Huddy. He explained what happened during Good Day New York:
"This is somebody I've come across several times for the last few days. He threatened to stab me in the throat with a pen. He ripped the mic out of my hand," said Huddy...
Remember the time that Tea Party guy ripped the microphone out of a reporter's hand and threatened to stab him? Awesome. Good times, good times.

Lots of plusses here as the local library is already the collection place for vermin, pedafiles, lice infested druggies and alchies who use the computers to view well, I don't know but I imagine, "Dreams of My Father", "Mein kampf", the girl next doors, 9 year olds butt.
This is kind of the resting place between the soup kitchen, and drug stores selling Listerine that take the cans they collect on the way in exchange.
i don't think the can collectors are gonna be happy with the entitled urchins intruding on their free sapce and heat.
In two short months it should be around zero degrees so they will all be inside fighting for free porn on free computers. Priceless, and worthless!

“Everyone’s been calling it our Valley Forge moment,” said Michael McCarthy, a former Navy medic in Providence. “Everybody thought that George Washington couldn’t possibly survive in the Northeast.” Valley Forge in Pennsylvania was the site of the Continental Army’s winter camp during the Revolutionary War.
More than a month and a half into the movement, Occupy Wall Street activists from New York to Colorado have pledged to tough out the snow, sleet and cold as they protest economic inequality and what they call corporate greed.
Yes, they're doing it. They're calling this their Valley Forge.

I agree.
Herbert has been an excellent governor in most respects, so I assume it is one of three things (or a mixture of two or more):
1. He issued a namby pampy "understanding" statement based on his compassionate conservatism streak (which appears to run through most Latter Day Saints, unfortunately)
2. His statement was misreported by the local news, which is relatively lefty (for these parts)
3. The statement came from an aide and not the governor
Our OWSers are occupying a park that is also the site of the Farmer's Market so this being Utah and all they are "nice" and vacate the park for the Farmer's Market, then return when it's done. But I think this weekend is the last one for the market so I don't know if they'll be 24/7 from now on. It's getting cold here but people around here know their camping, so it could go on for a while.

In Boston they are discussing ideas on how to "winterize" their dwellings.
Another option they are considering is squatting in foreclosed homes.
Really.

They want the other kind of job where you show up whenever you want wearing whatever you want, and sit around and drink free coffee all day.

Actually, I will say that there are certain mental exercises (yes, "hot thoughts" for lack of a better term) that will help you feel warm. They're not going to keep you warm, so you'll still die of exposure, but if that's taken care of (say, by wearing a nice warm coat), it can help you feel more comfortable while you wait for your body heat actually to warm up the air between your body and said coat.
There are tricks you learn when you're 17 driving a car older than you in which the AC and Heater have both quit working.

I dunno about other places but in Boston this protest has afforded the anti-capitalists their very own mob-on-demand.
For example, the anti-bank organization Citywide protests bank foreclosures.
Before, they used to gather a few dozen people to go to homes and and protest an eviction. But now they can get a few hundred people to form a mob around a house eviction.
And it works. The mobs are successful in stopping the eviction.

With Winter coming and knowing their lack of organization or ability to forge ahead with anything in their worthless lives, it is only a matter of time before they are history.
I want them to leave there with the knowledge that B.S. such as what they've done does not pay off. I want them to know that anarchy will not happen in this country. They will not suppress the 1% or, frankly, the other 90+% of folks who conduct themselves in a far more acceptable manner than have they.
I want to see the pain on their faces as they lose all hope. Maybe, then, they will come around to the fact that the game is tough and we don't all get trophies at the end.

Well, as I understand it at many of these OWS sites the workers from area businesses are being harassed, the patrons are avoiding the area, and the residents are suffering. And, iirc the police protection is being adversely affected because they're having to mind these jerks.
If I were a taxpayer, individual or business, in one of these places I'd be mightily annoyed.
Moreover, if I were a Tea Party or, say, a Pro-Life group that had had to jump through hoops for a protest permit in the past while these jerks are being allowed to flagrantly break the rules, I'd be demanding that they enforce the rules equally across the board.

As socialists they're of course burning through Other Peoples Money at a conflagration rate;
0/26 OWS General Assembly Minutes
We basically have about $175,000 in our bank account. We have more money pending. That money has not yet cleared. At the rate weÂ’re going, this is a very large chunk of our money. IÂ’m in solidarity with the other occupations, but the reality is, we need to start a fund to help the other occupations but we should start doing that by opening other channels of contributions. The money we have has been raised to run the operations here in this park. It costs us a lot of money and at the rate weÂ’ve been going I have serious doubts weÂ’ll be able to make it through December. Our expenses have been growing. So has the number of people. These are connected. [These figures are unofficial].
33.3.35 BLOCK 1: The reason why I blocked it, is Finance is right. We cannot afford to keep on giving money when people ask. Also, weÂ’re spending way too much money. We need to maintain this occupation as much as possible.

Occupy mom's basement? I wrote this the other day and posted it at the end of the 'drummers' thread...(sung to the tune of 'The Trees' by Rush)...
A Harsh Pounding
There is unrest at the protest,
there is trouble with the drums
For instead of giving “up-twinkles”,
thereÂ’s a showing down of thumbs
The trouble with the drummers
(and their quite convinced theyÂ’re right)
Is that their comrades just donÂ’t recognize
There should be drumming day and night
But the General AssemblyÂ’s feeling
Is like “Dudes, you’re just too loud,
And the rest of us canÂ’t be sleeping
With the pounding from your crowd.”
There is trouble at the protest,
And a stench in Zuccotti Park
As no oneÂ’s bathed for 30 days
And theyÂ’re shitting on Cop cars
So the drummers formed a union
And demanded drumming rights
“We’re the heartbeat of this movement,
You fucking bourgeois parasites!!”
So the Assembly ended the session,
The drummers left with their tom-toms
Now theyÂ’re fighting the oppression
Back in the basement
At
Their MomÂ’sÂ…

On the other hand, that's only fair, since they also tried to git little girls to force the Boy Scouts (a troop in TX, IIRC) to let them join.
Of course, I think someone (rightly) pointed out that, as a completely private organization with no official ties to the Government, the Government can't legitimately force the Boy Scouts to do a darn thing, and the case got thrown out.

As one who grew up in NJ, late fall rains at 32 to 40 degrees are worse than snow or 15 to 32 dry
You just can't get warm when it's that wet and cold. What's even worse is if a Canadian cold front follows the rain and the dreaded word "wind chill factor" pops up

Well the weather outside is frightful
And the hippies are so spiteful
I hope they've no place to go...
Let it snow
Let it snow
Let it snow!

OWS: LA is getting a two hour show on KFI am. Saturday 2-4 pm. It's called Occupy KFI. Might be good for some unintentional comedy.
KFI does have a good show every Sunday 2-4 pm, Dark Secret Place. Military related talk for those who actually give a shit.

Don't think we'll be reading any headlines about climate change killing the OWS movement...oh the irony.
