He was an SOB but... [krak]
— Open Blogger

H/T Cap'n Ed, a reminder of how to keep things in perspective.

I actually have something of a fondness for Bill Clinton. Yes, his first tendencies getting into office were ridiculously tilted toward Big Government. But he was a capable administrator and a wickedly shrewd politician, perhaps the best ever.

He was (is still, I imagine) a womanizer. Yes, he did what most adulterers do when accused, and lied. Yes, it was worlds worse because of his position & who he lied to.

He was a rascal and a son of a bitch, but he was our son of a bitch.

By our I mean the United States'. I never doubted that his first love was to his country, warts and all.

So while he may be slow to rock the boat, it comes as no surprise to me that at the same conference where he criticized the current Administration's lack of direction on Libya, he says this concerning the lack of Domestic oil production:

Former President Bill Clinton said Friday that delays in offshore oil and gas drilling permits are “ridiculous” at a time when the economy is still rebuilding, according to attendees at the IHS CERAWeek conference.

Clinton spoke on a panel with former President George W. Bush that was closed to the media. Video of their moderated talk with IHS CERA Chairman Daniel Yergin was also prohibited. Â…

Clinton said there are “ridiculous delays in permitting when our economy doesn’t need it,” according to Noe and others.

1 WTF?!?  Billy is also the originator of the '10 years for a drill to come on-line' statistic that the anti-drilling idiots use to this day.

Why didn't he drill when he had the chance ... and accept the consequences?

Sing hallelujah! Meanwhile, back at the WH, Barky is sucking his thumb under his desk. [ok, poor choice of words and visuals here, but he is in the fetal position somewhere]

I have never doubted the security of our nation, under any president, until January 2009 with the coronation of Dear Leader. But if I think of this too often I will drink too much, therefore, I don't think about it too often or until you morons tell me to take shelter with my gin.

5 But he was a capable administrator and a wickedly shrewd politician, perhaps the best ever.

I have to disagree.  He, like Barry, had the full force of the MBM holding him up, both during the campaign, and during his presidency.

Also, like Barry, he lied constantly and with fucking impunity, and for the same media dicksucking reason.

We used to point out that Bill lied even when the truth would have been just as good.

Feh.

6 Clinton is pragmatic.  Obama is a true believer who is expert in making radical positions sound pragmatic.  Which is why Obama's second imaginary tack to the center actually worked for a while.  Once again proving, "You can fool some of the people all of the time."

7 Bill Clinton's first love was to Bill Clinton, and no one should ever forget it.

That said, Clinton would never have been stupid/vindictive enough to shut down domestic oil drilling in the face of heightened Mideast turbulence and $4 gas.  At least with Clinton there was never any doubt he was American.

15 I don't mean a fondness insofar as whether or not he was a good President. I don't think he was, particularly. He wasn't a disaster by any means though.

I mean fondness in the since you are fond of that guy -- the one who's fun to party with, has a long string of girlfriend, always has a great story, always brings beer to the cookout.

Also, a respect for how very good he was at being a politician. Triangulation was a masterpiece. The government shutdown was sublime tactically -- a more classic bit of political judo would be hard to find.

Do I want that in a president? Not hardly. Yes, he disgusted me often.

But stepping back objectively, he was a wealth of entertainment on many levels. To me at least.

Maybe I'm alone in that.

Billy Jeff only looks good in retrospect because of who is in office now.  This was the man who almost foisted upon us an even more extreme version of Obamacare, the man whose indifference to terrorism lead to the 9/11 attacks, and who mostly abdicated his responsibilities as Commander in Chief to pursue his own selfish ends.

Future generations will see Billy Jeff as the man who helped start facilitate the End of America as we know it.

Yeah, I can't get too misty-eyed over Bubba.

Clinton was a liberal hack who was smart enough to talk conservative when he had to save his political skin.  He also benefitted from having really incompetent/geriatric enemies (Gingrich/Dole).  His only two redeeming qualities?  1:  He loved politics, so he was at least sort of paying attention in between Oval Office gang-bangs.  2:  He presided over inconsequential times so the country could afford his lack of seriousness.

In contrast, St. Pantscrease is lazy and bored by political minutiae.  Obama wants to be president of Heaven, so partisan wrangling with the evil meanie-head Republicans is just tedious. Moreover, America in 2011 is a different place than it was in 1995.  Under attack by militant Islam from abroad and a 5th column Left determined to drive it into bankruptcy, the US cannot afford Obambi's doe-eyed platitudes and inexperienced floundering.

Any president would look good (or just not so bad) in comparison to Obama.  Even Carter seems almost not completely incompetent compared to the current President.  Bill Clinton benefits from a low baseline when being stacked up against the Bamster.

30 Bill Clinton is a lot of things, but unlike President Obama, he was never a committed socialist ideologue. If you wanted to categorize him, Clinton is a traditional Democratic liberal politician. Cynical and amoral? Sure, but those also seem to be the attributes of traditional Democratic liberal politicians. President Obama is something entirely different. President Obama is true believer convinced that if energy prices go high enough, the American people can be coerced to embrace the Green Utopia he and his radical supporters envision. They also think people can be socially engineered not to know theyÂ’re being coerced, but who can be taught to believe that the blame for their dramatically declining standard of living lies with those evil, greedy, fat-cat oil companies and other corporate interests. After all, the Democratic Party avoided blame for a recession which was initially triggered by governmental intrusion into the housing market spearheaded by Democrats, and then exploited during the last election to give them super-majorities in the House and Senate. So why not follow a similar strategy with energy? What Obama and his people want is control over the energy industry. At this point, based upon the healthcare takeover, whoÂ’s to say they wonÂ’t achieve it?

Exert from Clinton to Lt Col Holmes regarding ROTC commitment.

"Because of my opposition to the draft and the war, I am in great sympathy with those who are not willing to fight, kill, and maybe die for their country (i.e. the particular policy of a particular government) right or wrong. Two of my friends at Oxford are conscientious objectors. I wrote a letter of recommendation for one of them to his Mississippi draft board, a letter which I am more proud of than anything else I wrote at Oxford last year. One of my roommates is a draft resister who is possibly under indictment and may never be able to go home again. He is one of the bravest, best men I know. That he is considered a criminal is an obscenity"

Clinton was a punk bitch then and remains so today.  Thousands of men answered their country's call to duty, but Clinton lied to Lt Col Holmes about his intent to join ROTC, and he was able to avoid the draft.

36 Sorry to be an ass in response, but my views over Bill Clinton will always be colored by the fact there's a decent chance he raped a couple women.  Not knowing that, I probably would enjoy having a couple beers with him.  From what I've heard, he's likable (he was competent on the job) and a fun guy to hang around.  That, however, colors everything.

No matter what his demeanor, he has a entirely different set of values than me and (when I do eventually have one) I'd be terrified to let my wife around the guy.

Ol' Billy boy is smart enough to know that countering Oblabla is not in his self interest, therefore there must be another reason. And by the way, I find Putin interesting. He's probably the only genuinely right-leaning dictator I can think of. He generally has a libertarian approach...if you respect his power, he leaves you to live your life. Not that I like him or his government, but it's preferable to many dictatorships.

You might want to remind the UK about Ronald Reagan's warning about not letting Russia control the gas lines.

84  Come on man, you're taking me the wrong way entirely. He's libertarian in comparison to other dictators, in that he doesn't over regulate the lives of his people.Take a look at all the crackpots of the world. If you're a Russian and loyal, you can live in Russia. That isn't the case in most countries. In the Soviet Union, the most loyal generals would be shot and killed. Regular people were sent to gulags. You look at places like China and Iran, they decide how you live your lives. That's all. Did I say he was a great guy? No. Did I say Putin's Russia is a wonderful paradise? No. I say he's interesting. He's an historical anomaly. I don't see any other dictators like him, ANYWHERE. Even the leaders of free nations are more controlling.

Putin's Russia is a danger to the world, and I believe one day soon they will probably stage open war in Asia and the Middle East. I shouldn't have to say this. You have to fucking know your enemies, treat them objectively, and understand who they are.

Do we have to attack each other over this? We're adults, here.

hey, stop digging your hole!! if your "loyal"?? you mean if you dont oppose him and his cronies. dude, he is as bad as stalin, hitler, quadaffi, any of them, maybe worse than some of them. just cause he hasnt killed as many doesnt mean he's not willing.

as for attacking each other over this, yeah. you expressed admiration, albeit inexplicitly for a tyrannical dictatorship. i will call you out for that. not doing so just provides you w/ cover. did you research those names i sent you? what did they do taht wasnt "loyal" and deserving of death or imprisonment? get your head out of you ass, apologize for what you said. it was wrong 100% and trying to justify it just makes you look worse.

You're probably right. I am usually a stickler for language, I'm surprised that I still use that. I think it sounds better when you say it out loud, but...krakotoa said in the post. "He may have been a son of a bitch, but..." . It's pretty common place. That said, I get where it can be misleading.

I study History, and I like to analyze historical figures and compare them. I'm kind of a geek for that. So, I probably can get into this stuff too much with taking unpopular positions. I like to play Devil's Advocate. Usually, I do it to liberals. Just two weeks ago, I was arguing that Richard Nixon was more credible and decent than Obama. Heads exploded.

89 oh and by the way, if putin does demand unflinching loyalty how does that not mean he is deciding how people have to live their lives? square that circle. the most basic freedom is to be free to think what you like, putin demanding loyalty or else destroys that right off. he is not any different than any other dictator. he is not "interesting" he is tyrannical.

And I was very disturbed when Russia attacked Georgia. I think Putin is a terribly oppressive, but not in the same way other dictators are.

Do you have a personal stake in this? If so, I'm sorry. I'm not trying to defend him. I'm detached from this, and I've been studying a lot about Russia's relations with the Middle East lately. I'll study the things you brought up, maybe he has been more oppressive to his own people. It just seems like regimes like Iran and China are absolutely brutal in comparison.

93 @ Bill H...

Not really, the Eastern Block aren't Russian. They are other nations. I never said Putin wasn't a danger to his neighbors, I think he needs to be stopped.Or else, his power base will expand. He's using smart power, and he's been ABUSING Obama.

People read stuff into my comments that aren't there, at ALL. Some evils are different than other evils. Most Dictatorships tend to start with controlling the populace, than they turn outward to expansion. Putin's Russia seems more bent on expansionary power, as opposed to the the kind of "reforms" people like Mao and Castro put in place. It's a different kind of evil that has to be fought a different way. You can subvert Iran and Cuba through supporting opposition movements. Large amounts of Russians want their country to gain relevance and power, so you can't subvert them as easily. This is because Putin has avoided robbing people on the ability to marry and earn a living. Does he rob them of Freedom? Yeah, but on a lesser scale so do Western Democracies. People don't notice what they're missing if you hold a carrot in front of them. In Russia, that carrot is "Revival of Russian Power!". I think Mark Steyn has written about this before. In the long run, Putin is more dangerous than China. We're going to need to be smart to defeat them.

...This is really what I'm getting at. Admittedly, I shouldn't have made a little throwaway comment. I was terrible at expressing what I was trying to express here. What I've seen suggests he remains popular there, and it's hard to defeat that. But I was making a small comment after sleeping for 10 hours, and I'm not being very clear. Sorry.

I tend to believe in the idea that Russia and Islamic nations will eventually attack Isreal...and I've been studying this. I was reading... http://tinyurl.com/4778j5q

Not Jimmuh Carter-esque, by any stretch, and far better than the current incumbent. He was as fine a *politician* as I've seen in my lifetime, and seems clearly also to be the "smartest" president of that same timeframe. Being a good politician, of course, can at times be like being a good shit-beetle. He seems to be as amoral as the day is long, and I'd go so far as to say he's not a good man. But doing so doesn't change or remove his obvious political gifts and facility. Credit where credit is due, I'd say. Warts and all.

Crazee -- I get what you are saying about Putin. I think he is a big step in the wrong direction for Russia, and I wonder if the reason he is so restrained in comparison to the likes of NORK & Iran is more due to the direction Russia has moved since Glasnost than to his own inclinations; but it is true that he is no Stalin or even Andropov.

[ ... ] Clinton said there are "ridiculous delays in permitting when our economy doesn’t need it," according to Noe and others. Ah yes, the President who vetoed opening up our own domestic oil drilling SIXTEEN YEARS AGO (meaning we would have had that oil by now) most definitely has moral authority to chastise someone else on their efforts to hinder domestic oil drilling. I clarified earlier in the comments. I supposed I should have added an update, but I sort of left it ambiguous for a reason.

To clarify further -- I meant as president, I felt his first love was to the US. Granted, it was a Leftist vision of the US, but I never felt the disdain for the US that is evident from Obama.

Again, not saying he was a great President. And I'm not claiming that what he is quoted as saying here, is what he would have said during his presidency.

Spending enough time with Bush the eldest seems to have colored his perspective somewhat.

Call me crazy, but I think it's a good thing to reinforce good behavior. Do I think this means I'll be voting D in a presidential election? Not hardly.

Do I hope to maybe swing the debate more onto our side of the issue?

Hell yes.

The other purpose of this piece wasn't to convince anyone we had it great under Clinton (although relative to today...?), rather, the point was to perhaps allow "independents" who voted for Clinton to feel less than alienated for the mistakes of their past when looking for an alternative to the Socialist Snob currently occupying the WH.

More flies w/ honey and all that.

Certainly I know that works with my "independent" friends who are alarmed at the direction the country has taken under Obama.

Give it a try is all I suggest. Not saying: Forgive & Forget all that was bad about Clinton's ideology. Just saying: Find some common ground that allows you to move the debate to the right in an agreeable manner.

I'm on the side that says he had his good points. There was no doubt about his being American throuh and through, plus he actually was the brilliant, articulate, quick-thinking intellectual barry gets credit for being. He could ad lib and talk off-the-cuff, and he knew his facts. He showed that he was intellectually curious and actually cared about more than sports. You got the feeling that (when he wasn't bonking chicks) in his spare time, he read and talked about issues. And tho' he might not have followed it, he was brought up in that Southern Baptist tradition, not in islam.

Plus there was this thing he did with cigars...

Here's some common ground:  I agree with you, he was better than Oblahblah.  Did he love America?  I think it's a close call, but I'll agree he loves what all lefties love: their vision of America.  Does that count?  If you actively loathe and revile, for one reason or another, most of what America did and does, can you at the same time claim to love America?  Of course, most of 'em do.

Didn't mean to bust your ass too hard.  The Era of Post-Partisanship has pushed me into a take-no-prisoners frame of mind.

Let's not get too carried away here.

Bill tried to do what Obama succeeded at.  What made him better than Obama is that he failed in his big-government takeover of healthcare.  But that is a matter of opportunity.  Given the opportunity, he would have been every bit the disaster that Barak has been.

He had disadvantages that Obama lacked.  He had only 4 years preceding him of a Republican president embarrassed by his own ideology and the hostility the elites felt for it, rather than the 8 that Barak had.  Hence, he had only substantial -- not overwhelming -- Democratic majorities.  He couldn't ram his legislation through like Barak had.  He he had those majorities, he would have done so.  It also helped that he put his politically tone-deaf wife in charge of his health care bill, but that's just a matter of competence.

He was rabidly anti-American, just like Barak.  He would go on Apology for America tours just like Barak does.  He youth was spent as a member of the Hippie culture (who, once they had crawled out from under the rock they were hiding under, went on to destroy our American fabric of life) which he never repudiated.  He was a draft-dodger who, in his own words, loathed the military.  Let's not forget that fishy Chinese money that filled Democratic party coffers while they were getting missile technology.   He cynically used the Oklahoma City disaster to paint his opponents as evil extremists.  He put Ginsberg on the Supreme Court.  He vetoed legislation banning partial-birth abortions.

So he's making a couple of nice noises right now.  Even broken clocks tell the correct time twice a day.  Even Nancy is capable saying the right thing on occasion (regarding human rights violations in China, for instance).  That doesn't change what he did, and what he tried to do, when in office.  If you want him for your sonofagun, fine, but I'd prefer not to have him as mine.
