Just to get it started...

Saw that "Robot" (or Endirhan) movie a few days ago. (that's the one with the clip that was posted here FOUR different times) (Remember the robot mob turning into a giant cobra?) A lot of fun. Ohhh, those crazy Indians.

While I am not a huge fan of the Indian style of movie making with them breaking into song ... I found parts of the movie showed more imagination than anything I've seen in a while.

Maybe the director of Endirhan should be making Iron Man 3.

7 An Indian friend of mine said the star of that movie is almost godlike in India.  Said his acting is horrible, but his influence is such that if you think of it in terms of an election between a Repub and a Dem, that whoever he came out and endorsed would put them over the top.  Rajinikanth or something like that is the guy's name.

LOL.  Algeria was one of the first places where they held "democratic elections" only to find that the batshit insane islamists won - overwhelmingly - and that was long before the big islamic push we have seen around the world in the wake of 9/11 (and we all know that it was the attack of 9/11, and our muffled response to it, that gave so many muslims the courage to start demanding the world submit to them).  Back then the whole West rightly supported the Algerian military annuling the elections.  That was some 30 years ago, I think.

It still floats around, but the style of animation didn't appeal to a lot of people (especially at the time but I think even now), the story was IIRC slightly hippie-bowdlerized (haven't seen it in years), and I think there was some kind of distro-publishing fight when the original came out. I'd have to look it up and I am Sofa King Lazy today.

IIRC, Bakshi used animation and sort of live action. Plus I think he roto-scoped the actors, meaning he filmed then, and then made them into a cartoon.

Which of course Disney did for many years.

Again, IIRC, Bakshi made the Fellowship of the Ring, but then never finished the Trilogy.

59 Bakshi used rotoscoping exclusively for nearly all of his features in the '70s and '80s, including The Lord of the Rings in '78.  The results were questionable at best.

And come to think of it, I'm not sure he was actually involved with the Hobbit feature of that time.

I was on the record walls of several arcades as a kid, I chased after new games... but at some point early on, around the time of Dragon's Lair and Space Ace and Space Harrier, I lost a lot of interest because while the games were getting prettier, they were also more obviously designed just to suck money as fast as possible.

I spent about $5 to get on the wall with Tempest, people were spending $40-60 in one day on Space Harrier.

Home games took over shortly after that. You only had to buy them once. Even C64 games were better than a lot of arcade games (or the same), and once VGA became common on PCs it was all over.

Posted by: Merovign, Bond Villain at February 12, 2011 11:07 AM (bxiXv)

62 This new Hobbit cast has a greater mixture of regional dialects then the LOTR series. Also, many of the others are either popular from select British TV shows or are theatre actors. For example, star Martin Freeman is most famous for The Office (UK). My favorite choice is Richard Armitage (BBC's North & South, MI-5) for Thorin Oakenshield.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at February 12, 2011 11:08 AM (iMgAa)

63 I think he only used it on the Nazgul in his LOTR and I thought it was very effective considering their nature.

No, he used it for all of the characters.... which I thought gave the animation a much too deliberate, almost surrealistic nature.  Rotoscoping is a useful technique (Disney's used it since the '30s) but Bakshi took it too far.

You mean the Daniel Craig ones? I really should because I'm a huge Bond fan and the Pierce Brosnan flicks soured me so much I haven't seen any since. Was Casino Royale Craig's first Bond film?

Posted by: ErikW at February 12, 2011 11:28 AM (lXI/m)

68 The new bond films have flaws but I was surprisingly impressed with them. I was surprised at a lot of the criticism because most of it could be applied to the whole series at one point or another.

Not all of the criticism was unfair, they are trying too hard to make things "modern" and they emotionally brutalize the characters too much (EMO!), and the "bad guy CIA" bit was annoying, and Craig is too tempermental on screen and not "suave" enough, but otherwise I think is doing a good job.

I give them a little credit for making the bad guy in Quantum a Greenie, but for some reason a lot of people didn't get the scam he was pulling, he was blackmailing multiple countries over water rights. That was the writers trying to be "topical" because that's a real issue, they just forgot to use a real issue most people know about.

I also like the connections between the films they have so far, essentially Casino and Quantum are one long movie, the second begins minutes or hours after the first.

I think the cinematography and music is better than the previous 2-3 films as well. I liked the touch at the beginning of Quantum with the second shot of the innocent bystander in the chase scene, a gentle reminder of consequences.

No, the books. Or the first 2 Bond films.

Any of you ever read the books?

Interesting. Plus it makes you realize that England was basically broke after the war. Bond had little or no money to gamble with in "Casino Royale". When he lost, it took the rich Armericans (CIA), to bail him out.

Although the modern movie avoids that, it's fairly faithfull to the book.

Posted by: ErikW at February 12, 2011 03:28 PM (lXI/m)

Yes and they're controversial but I think worth it. Craig's Bond is a lot more dour and serious, almost thuggish. They hint his background is less class and more fighter, that he was brought into the upper class later and is just a really good but deliberate schmoozer, but he is also more angry than any of the others, less glib.

So are you our resident pin-ball wizard? So to speak?

Yes and they're controversial but I think worth it. Craig's Bond is a lot more dour and serious, almost thuggish. They hint his background is less class and more fighter, that he was brought into the upper class later and is just a really good but deliberate schmoozer, but he is also more angry than any of the others, less glib.

I haven't read any of Ian Fleming's books but my dad has read all of them and he told me that Timothy Dalton's portrayal of Bond was the closest to Fleming's character and it sounds like Craig might be more along those lines.

I guess Bond wasn't the suave, debonair type but more of a cold-hearted individual.

Oh, that was a long time ago. I did P some people O with Unreal Tournament 3, though.

I remember a 2-quarter version fo Tron, there was probably more than one. That was just a beautiful machine. IIRC there was a side-lighted version that was 4 quarters, and I really wish I could buy one of those, it made it look like you were in the movie.

I bet that costs a small fortune. A buddy of mine purchased a mint condition sit down version of Spy Hunter for $4,000 a couple years ago.

I think Dalton was underrated but that was partly his own fault, that second movie should never have been made, never ever.

I've read a number of the books and the original Bond was a cool, calm killer and a user and manipulator of others. I would not say he was as expressively angry as Craig.

There is a knife fight in Quantum that struck me as "original Bond," Bond was a very active fighter but never lost his cool, did what he had to do and got it done.

I had a 1981 Bally Midway Pac-Man, but I sold it when I was out of work.

I would like a Tron machine, if I ever do that kind of thing again. I loved the original movie, the PC video game - maybe I should make a Tron console with a PC in it and the PC video game Tron 2.0. They fixed a lot of the bugs with a late patch.

Actually, I think the movie avoids why Bond ran out of money. But it's been a while...

Funny thing in the books. His superiors know Bond is a gambler, give him some money, and trust he can double or triple it.

When Bond loses, he's devastated. Then in comes Felix Leiter, and the CIA. Rich Americans, and can back him.

Which then of course changes everything.

One other thing. Bond's torture. Straight from the book. I was really surprised to see that in the film.

82 I've read all Fleming's Bond books. Very good. Hey! Did you know that Fleming tried to kill off Bond? (like Doyle threw Sherlock over Reichenbach falls) Look at the end of the 2nd book (From Russia with Love). It has a scene similar to the movie where Bond gets in a fight vs. a poison-shoe-knife wielder. Except, in the book... he gets stabbed! Wins the fight and then succumbs to the poison. When Fleming decided to do a 3rd book... Well, Bond recovered.

86 if any Moronette ever has cringed

If it gets too rank, we can always leave for a bit, right? Boys will be boys, and we love Morons; other wise, we'd be hangin' at Hot Air.

I can't imagine any real card-carrying Moronette being all that offended by too much here.

I have gotten upset a time or two...like the other day when tangonine wouldn't let up on stuff that was obviously upsetting Jane D'oh, and maybe a year or so back some guy was getting really rank with Peaches, I think. Personally nasty bothers me.

My husband loves that animated LOTR. He has it on VHS, too.

Yes, I remember that. Also the fact that Bond was always calculating his survival. At the start of the books he is in his mid-thirties, and figures he has only so many missions left in him.

Plus he had been in the Royal Navy during the war. Hence the "Commander Bond".

He served under "M", if i remember correctly.

Gonna disagree here .If I'm being an asshole to any of the Moronettes, then them giving me shit about it is a lot better then them going away.

Plus everyone can see what's going on. No Mystery about it.

Just saying....

I have to agree. I've shot my mouth off a few times here and it was almost always the ladies who were quick to tell me to shut the fuck up and stop being stupid. And I respect that.

Things can escalate in the heat of passion.

True, only if you let it. But aren't you argueing that if you are being a jerk that the women posters should just fade away?

I'm not buying that at all.

Posted by: HH at February 12, 2011 02:10 PM (6oDXl)

92 Heh. Mrs. tells me to STFU all the time!

Posted by: sickinmass at February 12, 2011 06:10 PM (1rflU)

But you know what we mean, right? No one wants to be indelicate in front of people we don't know but when it comes to AoS, all bets are off and we know better. If a lady is offended by what she reads here, she simply doesn't belong.

Posted by: ErikW at February 12, 2011 02:19 PM (lXI/m)

93 If any Moron is being a jerk towards a Moronette then by all means he should have his ass chewed out.

Posted by: sickinmass at February 12, 2011 06:15 PM (1rflU)

And what you said. Nobody should be a jerk to anyone else around here.

DonÂ’t complain, donÂ’t explain. Let them, especially men, figure you out.

C'mon sickinmass, that's just horseshit. Your quote. I don't want anyone here backing off because of what you say. But you seem to want that if we bother some women.

Nor do I think this is some mens' exclusive club.

OTOH, if no one complains, then maybe I'm wrong.

Posted by: HH at February 12, 2011 02:29 PM (6oDXl)

95 Dayam. I think I love you.

Right back atcha!

Here an example... When the lovely Moronettes have a shoe discussion on an ONT we fade away. (notice I did not say 'stompy boots'
)

Miss Tammy does the same if we get too randy, that's all.

Exactly!

In real life, if a discussion turns too rank, I just smile and excuse myself. I don't make a big deal of it, I am old enough to realize that men are men. I have never had to do that twice with the same group of guys. I find men to be 100% respectful that way.

But I am not gonna come to a, uh, smart military blog like this, and then get all offended when Morons start talking about how much they like teh boobies. I find it amusing, more often than not. My husband is a major fan of teh boobies, and I am always happy to point out especially nice sets to him when we're out and about. (He usually spots them long before me, but he says he appreciates my efforts nonetheless.)

I will definitely call someone out here if I feel they are being a jerk, and I am glad that others do, too. It's what makes this such an awesome place.
